Were we wrong about "Mass Effect: Andromeda"?

Is Mass Effect: Andromeda only good when compared to Anthem?

_SilverHawk_1906d ago

I think it's a very good game but to each his own

NarutoFox1906d ago (Edited 1906d ago )

The thing is the first 3 games are way better and that makes Andromeda look bad.

-Foxtrot1906d ago

Yup

If you have higher standards with a franchise then you want the rest to be like that, even with Mass Effect 3 if you got past the hype it wasn't as good as the previous 2, the quality was dropping then.

Mass Effect Andromeda just didn't have any charm like the original games.

TK-661906d ago (Edited 1906d ago )

I'm going to disagree slightly. Mass Effect 1 is a game that hasn't aged well when it comes to gameplay. The story is good but the gameplay is god awful by comparison to ME2 and 3. The story for Andromeda took a good direction in leaving the old universe behind to start over since continuing from ME3 is difficult.

anonymousfan1906d ago (Edited 1906d ago )

@-Foxtrot I agree the quality was already dropping with ME3... but I think ME3 was part of a grander tale because of the two games that came before it although it came short as far as a conclusion to an otherwise excellent trilogy. What I mean to say is ME3 was more enjoyable because of the choices carrying over, the overarching story and amazing characters carried over from ME1-2. Mass Effect Andromeda could have been a fresh new beginning but yeah it ended up being a massive let down.

jznrpg1906d ago

I like Andromeda better than 3 personally . 1 was my favorite and 2 was the most polished but they took some rpg elements out of 2 and made it more shooter and I wish they stuck with 1s formula and just expanded upon that . Oh wel still like Mass Effect more than most multiplayer games

LostInSpaceCamp1905d ago

No, the terrible gameplay, endless bugs, poor animation, bad story, weak voice acting, appalling UI, and awful game direction are what make Andromeda look bad.

cleft51906d ago

I put over 300 hours into Mass Effect Andromeda looking for any redeeming features... there was none. The only "good" thing was the mp, which was still done better in Mass Effect 3 mp. So no, Andromeda is not good and we can stop trying to pretend it was good. If you like Andromeda, good for you. I like some bad games too, that doesn't make them good games.

gobluesamg1906d ago

You must be a glutton for punishment or it wasn't as bad as you say. 300 hours is a lot.

TK-661906d ago

I think your comment contradicts itself. If you find the multiplayer good then you must also find the gameplay good right? So there is more than one good thing about the game in your view.

starchild1906d ago (Edited 1906d ago )

That's nonsensical. When it comes to videogames and all forms of art and entertainment it's all ultimately subjective. So it doesn't make sense to say you liked a "bad game". If you liked a game that means it was a good game to you and other people's subjective opinions don't matter for you.

chris2351906d ago

one does not need 300 hours to realize what a dud is.
one also does not sink 300 hours into a product and the complain about it.

Kyizen1905d ago

@Starchild It's not subjective though. Anyone can enjoy a bad game or love an average game if it fits their genre of choice. But if you look at it technically and compare it to others you can most certainly call a game bad. For example ME:A has so many quests for you to run from point A to point B to give an NPC something. You can compare that to say Witcher 3 which had a whole side quest with a mad rule where you had to rescue his son and could fail so his son dies and then you can either dethrone him or keep him power and more...this was a side quest that you could skip. Then you compare the two you can say one was bad and one was good. Take all these pieces and you can say a game is bad, doesn't mean someone can't enjoy the game but the game objectively is still bad.

DarXyde1905d ago (Edited 1905d ago )

You sunk over 300 hours into it "looking for any redeeming features"?

Un- bloody- likely. Sounds like you enjoyed it quite a bit. It's very okay if you did. But what you're saying sounds, to me, like you would buy a Drake album, tell everyone you hate it, but you know all the songs and lyrics and the message behind them. You're clearly past the exploratory phase at that point.

I don't buy that, honestly. It really doesn't matter, but 300 hours to find something you like? I think you just enjoyed it, mate. And that's very okay.

FloydianAndroid1905d ago

I’m sorry but it’s real hard to hear you say it’s terrible and then in the same breath say you put 300 hours in the game. The problem is that these days if a game doesn’t get a “9-10” people say the game is bad. Not every game is god of war or the last of us. I am currently enjoying crackdown 3. It has like a 60 on metacritic. I want to have fun when I play games. If you didn’t find andromeda fun then why did you put 300 hours in?

Gameplay was good. Story kind of sucked

GtPawnSacrifices1906d ago

Yeah; they really needed a scientific advisor.. sooo many discrepancies.
One that immediately jumped out at me was while riding the train a news report of a guy dying in an accident was reported, but his name couldn’t be released until his next of kin back on Earth could be contacted.
Milky Way to Andromeda is 2.5 mil light years. (ME:A crew covered it in 600 norm years, but whatever)
So even if a 600y trip were possible, said transmission would take 600 to reach Earth, another 600 to Andromeda, by which time ‘who cares’ everyone would be dead & the body a pile of dust & bone.
For what it’s worth I did finish it, but my Fave was definitely ME:1

rainslacker1906d ago

I think they had faster communications, but yeah, there were a lot of little things that were kind of wonky. Just seemed like they were trying to seem like it was a normal news report, and realistically, considering how small the working crew would have been, it would have been known anyways, and I don't see a reason they would have so much infrastructure for a pedestrian style news report before they even had everything up and running. There were a lot of inconsistencies like that

Xb1ps41905d ago

@gtspawn

Ha! Love it when things like that are caught...

Kyizen1905d ago

Gun play was good, Story kind of sucked, side characters sucked, side missions sucked, exploration sucked, graphics sucked

Kyizen1905d ago

It's not a bad game but also not a very good game. You can enjoy it and have fun but when you compare it to the past games in the series it falls short. The dialog choices are not meaningful. The animations when downhill, and the game play while the gunning is the best I think the overall exploration and story also took a nose dive.

n1kki61905d ago

Gamer group think struck again. People got hung of on a couple graphical bugs and even people who never played the game started shitting on it.

dannite861905d ago

Weird facial animations aside, I totally agree with you.

People are only saying that now because Anthem is that bad

If the next game is worse then Anthem, unlikely but God knows at this point, then we'll look back on Anthem and think if we were wrong about that game aswell

Germaximus1906d ago

Anthem isn't a bad game at all. People are idiots.

-Foxtrot1906d ago

Please watch this and tell me how you can disagree when Joe literally shows you why it's bad, boring and bland

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

If you want to get personal about it then the only idiots are those buying the game when the reveal trailers and other ones during the first year or two of it's reveal were full of lies and obvious fake footage.

DrumBeat1906d ago

Oh come on. That's an idiotic comment. You're enjoying it that's fine, but if others didn't that doesn't make them "idiots."

Don't let the negativity surrounding the game get you frustrated causing you to lash out and make stupid comments. Enjoy it if you can, but from what I've heard, the negativity is justified.

Notellin1905d ago (Edited 1905d ago )

Believe it or not many (most likely all) people are smarter than you and they don't enjoy the game.

Realms1905d ago

If you like the game that is fine but given the quality of Bioware's past games it's hard to justify giving them a pass. It's not so much that Anthem is a terrible broken game there is enjoyable aspects but as a whole it's a huge let down specially given how EA hyped the game.

LostInSpaceCamp1905d ago

So where do you work at BioWare and when do you think you’re gonna lose your job

BlaqMagiq11905d ago

Only an idiot would think Anthem is a good game. That game is downright garbage.

Ricegum1906d ago (Edited 1906d ago )

That is the state of a lot of games nowadays, and why I feel slightly let down with this gen. In my opinion when you look back at the PS3/360 days the quality has definitely slipped compared to that gen, and consumers seem to be happy to receive less and less from developers, and people are likely to think previous games weren't all that bad.

PapaBop1905d ago

It's ironic that people are saying that now.. I wonder if it's the same people who were talking up Anthem saying Andromeda was made by Bioware's B team and that Anthem will be amazing because it is being made by their best developers?

pietro12121906d ago

Without comparing Andromeda to the original trilogy it's still an average game. Weak storytelling, dull boring characters, but at least the gameplay wasn't bad.

LostInSpaceCamp1905d ago

You mean the gameplay with the bad shooting, pointless powers, and awful driving? That gameplay?

Sega Saturn made it but not the 360. Don't remember Saturn having a horrid rrod rate. Absolutely horrid

The launch games were all right, but look at how Virtua Fighter and Daytona USA compared to their re-releases.

Mass Effect Companions, Ranked from Worst to Best

From Xfire: "BioWare's Mass Effect franchise took gamers on a fascinating universal sci-fi journey that will never be forgotten. While fighting against the ever-looming threat of the Reapers was central to Mass Effect's storyline, what made the series so iconic was its vast and diverse cast of characters.

Not only do these companions accompany Commander Shepard as you make your way through hell and back, but, throughout your journey, you also get to learn who these characters were and are and what they think about what it is that you are doing. Some will even fall in love with you, and others will even become your enemy based on your decision."

sourOG1102d ago

When I looked at the list I thought they were saying Garrus was the worst lol. And tali being so far down the list was fighting words for me. But the numbered list is just the order they are shown so you are forgiven.

CYALTR1101d ago

I think they listed them from worst to best. Also keep in mind that this includes Andromeda characters that aren't part of the remastered trilogy. Interesting refresh on the characters though.

sourOG1101d ago

They did but I didn’t realize it until I started reading. That’s just the order they are shown.

Knightofelemia1102d ago (Edited 1102d ago )

I couldn't stand Miranda I could never like her as a character and I always skipped Jacob and James. I always liked Grunt, Jack, Legion, Tali, Garrus, Samara, Liara, Wrex, Edi, Zaeed, Kasumi I always use these characters. Using Martin Sheen as the Illusive Man just fits the character like using Keith David as Admiral Anderson was another good choice always feels like Goliath from Gargoyles is yelling at you which I like.

Rebel_Scum1101d ago

Kinda weird having a question mark at the end of that sentence?

Soy1101d ago

Garrus is best space bro.

Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021

Zahi AR. from Link Cable Gaming writes “Welcome back Link Cable Gaming fans, with me in andromeda. Specifically, Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021. With the recent announcement of Anthem shutting down its future plans, I wanted to look at another recent BioWare game. My switch to a PlayStation 5 destroyed my save file right while I was at the end. So, I decided to do a fresh start on the new console to see just how well (or not) it’s been since launch. How has the new generation of hardware treated the game that fell from grace? Should you play Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2021? Let’s find out.”

Such a good game! It got a 4K X1X upgrade and it looks fantastic! Also like the story! Was playing it again before Series X dropped. Going to download it for the Series X, as soon as I have more room on my HD. Playing too many other games right now.

Instant resume is AMAZING! I can Switch between 5 games in seconds. Like 10 to 15 at the most! No closing a game and opening another one! Thank you Microsoft!

giovonni1167d ago

It’s was decent to me. I didn’t feel the magic I felt when I played two or even three. I don’t know. It was repetitive, and the worlds felt bland.

jeromeface1167d ago

There's a reason it reviewed so poorly in the first place... these reasons among others.

anast1167d ago

I had a lot of fun with this game, but I haven't played 2 or 3 yet.

giovonni1167d ago

2 was wonderful, three was just as good as two the ending though 🤦🏾‍♂️

Wintersun6161166d ago

I finally gave it a go last autumn and was amazed by how bad a game can be. And believe me my expectations were low. After 10ish hours I just had to give up.

giovonni1166d ago

I powered through it, myself. It was just repetitive, and the Land Rover Exploration wasn’t interesting at all. The story also we mahhhhhhh.
