No one will pay 3000 for these and gaming

Abriael1905d ago (Edited 1905d ago )

Probably not. But who knows, 10 or even 5 years down the line it could work

BizarroUltraman1904d ago

it already works, just not to everyones liking.

Eonjay1904d ago

It reminds me of a certain Samsung phone that was announced recently...sure the Fold is amazing, but its not $2000 amazing.

Jin_Sakai1904d ago

They specifically said this device isn’t for the consumer.

beulahland1904d ago

Dude, they clearly stated it is meant for Enterprise. Duh.

Abnor_Mal1905d ago

Besides Epic Games, Insomniac and Microsoft what other gaming companies are also showing involvement? Is Microsoft even the XBox games division or the regular Microsoft business division.
Then there's the price of $3,500, how many people will be willing to pay that steep a price when many balked at the $400 price tag of PSVR.
Of course HoloLens2 will have much more reach beyond simple gaming, but still that's a hefty price just for one headset.

Profchaos1904d ago

I don't think many people balked at the psvr price for the majority of people it was seen as the cheapest way to get into a decent VR experience.

And now it can be picked up in a $200 bundle

But 3000 is rediculas send like it's targeted towards business again

beulahland1904d ago

@Profchaos "But 3000 is rediculas send like it's targeted towards business again"

Because IT IS.

timotim1904d ago (Edited 1904d ago )

Well...not exactly fair...the PSVR is a very expensive peripheral. You need a PS4 for it to even work. In the world of peripherals, $400 is a lot to ask for. It requires a power outlet and can not be taken outdoors. HoloLens on the other hand is a very expensive device...not a peripheral. It is a stand alone device that isn't tethered to anything or needs anything else for it to work. It is completely independent. It is the most advanced headset in the market and its high price fits its case use. Think about an Apple iMac...they can get up to $4000...but that is justifiable (by many) because is a multipurpose device that can be used from everything to content creation to content consumption...same can be said about HoloLens 2.

IamTylerDurden11904d ago

PSVR - is $299 (plus a free game) and is a consumer product with high level exclusives and a vast library of games.

Hololens - is $3,500 and is not a consumer product. It basically has no legitimate gaming software nor is it expected to other than the odd game or tech demo.

The two aren't comparable and Hololens imo shouldn't even be gaming news. The only way Hololens had pertained to gaming is with the fake Minecraft demo from E3 2016. We've been talking about Hololens for years and it's been a waste of breath. Why even feature it at E3? Was it an attempt at winning a Billion dollar contract? Shouldn't that be at a tech conference?

You downplay PSVR as merely a peripheral, yet it has its own exclusives, in fact, over the past year PSVR has had more/better exclusives than XB1. That is not hyperbole. Astro Bot, Tetris Effect, Moss (timed), Firewall, The Persistence, Wipeout VR, ZOE, Creed (PSVR/PC VR), Pixel Ripped ect. Even AC7 has a tremendous VR campaign. Evasion, Sprint Vector, Archangel, i could go on. PSVR is a platform more than a peripheral. People spend $300 on headphones, an actual peripheral, yet you think that is outrageous for VR?

The reason people buy $4000 PCs is because they are supported with software. A wide array of software. A consumer can buy a PC and easily access thousands of games, what would an average Joe do with Hololens atm?

timotim1903d ago

@Tyler

I'm not down playing the PSVR at all...I called it EXACTLY what it is! I was basically telling Abnor that his comparison between PSVR and HoloLens on price point wasnt "exactly fair", then proceeded to explain why that was. You then get on and say "the two aren't comparable"...you're saying the same thing I said! 😄

The amount of games you list, nor the quality of those games that support the PSVR will not change the fact that it remains just a peripheral. You can not play any of those games without a PS4...period. You took offense to my breakdown of the two because you felt i was attacking Sony and the PSVR...since you are a supporter of both you decided to respond to me instead of Abnor, who compared them initially. PSVR might be a very nice peripheral...might even be the best VR peripheral out right now...but a peripheral it is none the less.

OMGitzThatGuy1904d ago

It is aimed at businesses, not you. UE4 can be used to create all kinds of 3d applications, not just games.

rainslacker1904d ago (Edited 1904d ago )

There's a plug in API for halolens which is pretty adaptable to any game engine that can be integrated with visual studio.

I know when people see things like this, they automatically assume consumer level games, but these game engines are also very good at making commercial level simulations which will be beneficial to customers who want realistic training materials, or possibly higher end entertainment experiences, such as an arcade.

At the current cost of Halolens, it's still a ways from consumer level purposes, and its still limited in functionality due to it's independent design, although I've heard it can be used in conjunction with a PC as well.

Anyhow, that would be the biggest reason that Epic is involved if I had to guess right now. Insomniac, I couldn't say, but they do have their hand in many areas of gaming besides just making console games. They have a mobile space they've been looking to expand, and also make third party tools. But I could also see them willing to try out other games on the system, even if not immediately viable from a commercial standpoint.

BizarroUltraman1904d ago

First of all just like the first Hololens it catered more to developers or creators.
Think of them more like development kits. I hope they have a better field of view which seemed to be one of the more talked about flaws from the last one. Besides that its cool tech...That one shooter game with robots coming out the wall from a couple yrs back was awesome imo. Maybe it comes back even better on Hololens 2. Good to see bigger Pubs and devs working on it.

Why game support on a 3000 dollar device?

timotim1904d ago

Why not? Obviously, this version of HoloLens is focused on enterprise and Microsoft is smart to do so...but really think about it. Lots of gamers, myself included, game on very expensive 4K OLED TVs right now ranging anywhere from $2000-5000...this wouldn't be that different. As the technology becomes more affordable, I can see a more consumer focused version hitting the market at better price points...

IamTylerDurden11904d ago

timtom

It's utterly moronic to compare your TV to Hololens. Your TV is supported by a huge variety of applications and is largely your gaming and entertainment epicenter. The use you get out of a $300 to $3000 TV is worth it. Can you say the same for a $3,500 Hololens?

XiNatsuDragnel is correct in the sense of why support a non consumer product? There will be no install base so it seems like a waste of time, money, and talent.

timotim1904d ago

@Tyler

"The use you get out of a $300 to $3000 TV is worth it. Can you say the same for a $3,500 Hololens?"

That depend on who you ask and what they would use it for. While I absolutely 💘 my LG OLED and X combination, I honestly get more and varied use out of my PCs. I'm on my Surface Go way more than my OLED/X. That's because my Go isn't just used for entertainment/gaming/consumpti on. HoloLens would be the same way.

Again, HoloLens is an independent device with multiple use case purposes. Gaming would just be one of the many. Now if you ask the doctor, the teacher, the creator, NASA, the Military etc what would they get more use out of very few of them would say their TVs...

rainslacker1904d ago (Edited 1904d ago )

Unreal Engine is used in simulation development, and sometimes simulation isn't always games, or consumer level games like we are accustomed to. Many game design degree programs actually have the simulation part in the description too, because the actual principals are the same. In fact, games are always a simulation of some sort, but not all simulations are games.

Plus, there may be a market for it in the consumer space, even if limited. Some companies right now may just be willing to do R&D development, because the tech will keep getting cheaper as time goes on.

Prubar1904d ago

There’s no point in trying put up a long thought out argument because these people are shitting on it just because....well you know.....MS. Anybody who’s actually interested in “all games” and electronics already knows who this is marketed to.

Xbox Gives Incoherent Explanation For ‘Hi-Fi Rush’ Studio Closure

The gaming world is still reeling from the announcement that Microsoft is shuttering Tango Gameworks, the studio behind last year’s big Xbox hit, Hi-Fi Rush.

Relientk7722h ago

There's no logical or good reason to give for closing Tango Gameworks. They make great games consistently and Hi-Fi Rush was the highest rated Xbox game in literal YEARS. Closing the studio was just plain stupid and nonsensical.

notachance2h ago

It’s quite strange to not see Phil Spencer in any talkshow or podcast… usually the dude would talk almost daily when there’s even a bit of news from xbox.

Hofstaderman1h ago

Muzzled and/or in on it from the very beginning. You have to be a very stupid person not to anticipate that your division is going to be under scrutiny from shareholders after 80 Billion Dollars worth of acquisitions

Aloymetal1h ago

The beauty of being a CEO here in America is that when your company does well, you get extra money as a reward...
And when your company does badly, you get extra money to encourage you to stick around and lead it through the storm...And at some point, you get to bow out and float toward retirement on your golden parachute, which means and you guessed it, MORE MONEY!! What a deal for snake oil man Phil!!

TheTruth20346m ago

Same applies to PlayStation.

Jim Ryan partied with London Studio and fired them all 24 hours later.

He closed studios and fired thousands and then departed with a huge payout

purple1012h ago

Perhaps they think they can sweep this one under the rug, gamers will forget about it,

We will not

They made a good game and you put the whole studio in the bin, this couldn’t be clearer, ms don’t care, everyone suspected it, but now we KNOW it

Amplitude1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

She's kinda got the verbal communication of 3-years-ago Biden trying to say something he knows nothing about.
What she meant to say is: "We wasted our budget for the next couple years buying Call of Duty, and we're moving all our chips to that one series"

It's starting to seem quite obvious that XBox is going to be shutting down most of their studios or selling them off, then focusing on some sort of PC/Console hybrid OS for the next XBox where they can collect royalties Valve style.

Barlos7h ago

It's your interpretation. That doesn't make it 'official'.

Sonic18813h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Probably for PC and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Square Enix games doesn't sell to well on Xbox

Extermin8or3_3h ago

Nothing sells well on Xbox that's precisely Microsoft's problem

The3faces2h ago

Apparently they don't sell well on PlayStation either.

Lightning771h ago

Square named Drops Xbox as part of their multiplatform approach in their quarterly reports.

Like it matters MS will probably find away to close them down to.

DarXyde3h ago

I mean, maybe? They'll want as much as possible and I figure they could have been hoping for greater impact on PlayStation, but that's good reason to reflect and realize the resources and development cycle of these games aren't very sustainable. The solution is to make more affordable games with shorter dev cycles, then once in a while bring out the big guns.

I think Final Fantasy VII Re make and Rebirth would do really well if it was multiplatform. Specifically, if Nintendo gets their hardware up to snuff, and the rumors are promising. I don't really have much faith in its performance on Xbox, but Nintendo gamers really commit to buying their games. At one point, Breath of the Wild for Switch outsold the Switch itself.

Granted, Zelda always solos everything except GTA, but Nintendo folk are avid Final Fantasy fans. I think it would do exceptionally. Nintendo just needs to make porting easy and inexpensive and they'll get more games.

The two most profitable games for them didn't sell as much as expected. Yes. Make it make sense.

Hopefully the next Nintendo system isn't a potato and it can contribute to FF sales in future as well, in addition to PC releases. If this ensures the long term health for SE and franchises than like FF and KH then I'm all for it.

NotoriousWhiz8h ago

Adding Nintendo and PC customers is the best way to increase sales and long term success. Not going to get that from Xbox.

shinoff21834h ago

Hopefully square brings all the lose switch exclusives over to.

Hofstaderman8h ago

Will there be a XBOX for Square to release games on? Or a MS Games service?

thesoftware7306h ago

Hof,

You must not have heard they are launching new hardware and have already committed to a Next-Gen Xbox.

But, for some reason, I think you already knew that and wanted to spin a silly narrative; besides, why wouldn't they release games on the SX/SS? You do know these consoles will still be here, right?

Hofstaderman5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Optics. They have a STATED plan to do so. Thats not commitment. The shareholders and board are calling the shots now. Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already. Investment in hardware, R and D and marketing is how much again? That cost with the history of their hardware performance....at most maybe a handheld. What I am certain of XBOX is finished, the writing has been on the wall before the studio closures. Its MS Games and they are not hardware. They are software because MS is a software company. Expect them to be folded in the Surface team.

DarXyde3h ago

*hardware

I believe they committed to hardware.

I hate to nitpick, but that's kind of the company they are. You have to.

3h ago
Aloymetal4h ago

No to both, not worth the effort, money and time on an already dying brand.

2h ago
thesoftware7304h ago

"They have a STATED plan to do so. That's not commitment."

Huh? What are you talking about? They announced they would be unveiling new Hardware this holiday season; how else are they supposed to commit to it?

" Lets see if they have the appetite for hardware because they are owed 80 Billion Dollars already"

What a silly statement, you think this deal was approved so they could make 80 billion in less than a year? This is a long-term commitment, a future-proofing of profit.

"What I am certain of XBOX is finished,"

No, you are not certain of this lol; as you stated, if they make even a Handheld in the form of a Steam-Deck that can dock to a TV/monitor, wouldn't that be just changing the form factor but still XBOX?

Closing these studios has really got you guys delusional; that is what happens in companies, in a changing market: you acquire, and you trim; like it or not, that is the way things are done. Lets look.

Where is the new Psygnosis with a new wipeout?
What happened to Japan Studio? Pixl Opus? London Studio?
Where is Zipper Interactive?

I can list more, but you see, closing devs doesn't mean your company is finished, especially when you have like 30+ dev teams.

Extermin8or3_3h ago

They won't be unveiling the hardware this holiday season it will be like the series x and s they got a tease at the game awards 2018. But no details until year of their release in 2020 lol

Relientk778h ago

Please tell me the Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake is still coming. I feel like I've been waiting forever for that game.

gold_drake3h ago

i think the juggernauts kingdom hearts (disney provides the money for that one) final fantasy and dragon quest are fine, the rest not as much

Charal8h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Another sign that dedicated consoles market is in trouble, while PC seems more and more attractive to big publishers.

Having a good gaming PC and a PS5 myself, given current trend form both Sony and MS I am less and less playing on PS5, waiting for exclusives to release on PC, so I understand the logic behind the new strategy.

anast7h ago

Post those numbers. Then your comment might make sense.

thesoftware7306h ago(Edited 6h ago)

Ants,

I get that we don't know exactly without numbers, but come on, man, we can clearly see what's happening.

The console market has not grown much, the highest-selling console in history is still the PS2. You can play the " prove it" game all you want, but Sony's more aggressive PC push, SE completely rebooting their company/business, after being mainly exclusive to one console and showing a sizeable profit loss is telling.

PC is a high seller, and your doubtful PS5 dominant stance does not change the clear writing on the wall, straight from Sony's mouth, that they need to be, and will be more aggressive in the very lucrative PC market.

So, in other words, PC market is indeed looking more and more attractive to Pubs.

anast5h ago

@730

Numbers?

I'm willing to bet the farm that ¨PC gamers are not the dominate number compared to console, but I don't know because I don't have numbers. However, the price point of entry can allow us to infer what I had just stated.

Even if Redfall were a good game, the closure of Hi-Fi Rush proves even that doesn't matter in the industry.

Profchaos19h ago

Yeah it would have mattered especially since their huge game that year wasn't all that it was cracked up to be remember redfail was almost heavily promoted and hyped not to the level of starfield but still more promoted than the average game.

There was still a decent marketing campaign behind the game I'm sure millions were spent advertising it on websites and I saw a few billboards and bus stop signs in real life

darthv722h ago

their biggest mistake was showcasing it as being a 60fps game only to release it at 30. That really soured the taste so that when the real 60fps mode was released, many still didnt want to give it a taste. i tierd it at 30... it was okay, but playing it at 60 is a much better experience and a better overall game. Its really not that bad once you get past the drama surrounding its initial release and just play it for what it is. It has some pretty decent aspects but nothing groundbreaking. It feels like a typical fps from the ps360 days... of which there were many.

jwillj2k418h ago

No it wouldn’t matter it wouldn’t bring in enough profit to offset their 100 billion dollar acquisition. It would maybe delay the inevitable by some months.

Profchaos9h ago

Pretty much no game in Bethesda stables makes cod numbers instantly even fallout 4 Bethesda's best selling game sold 12 million at launch and over the next 10 years climbed to over 32 which cod would do rapidly

CrimsonWing6918h ago

I would f*cking think so. Good games are what draws people to your platform. It’s why I adored the 360 era with Gears of War being one of the highlights for me. You make sh*t games and it just makes your platform that much worse and you start gobbling up studios I like and then killing them off it also makes me hate your platform as well… just sayin’

franwex18h ago

Unless the game would’ve been War Zone, or Fortnite level. No. Maybe even Hell divers 2 I doubt would’ve been enough.

Exvalos17h ago

No it would not have, the ABK deal was great for Microsoft but horrible for Xbox. Over 100 billion dollars in acquisitions. That money has to be made back. That ABK deal essentially destroyed Xbox as we know it.
