How Sony May Be Dropping the Ball

Cross-play is the absolute thing people want, with more and more games and platforms offering the feature. Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, and even smaller indie games like Wargroove offer it on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Paladins even offers cross-play and cross-progression. It may be harping on it, but Sony is the one system that isn't exactly embracing cross-play yet. Worse, we are getting answers that don't always seem definitive or encouraging about it. It might even sound like doubletalk.

"Cross-play is the absolute thing people want"
For the love of God.
No one feels this way.
Stop.
Crossplay is nice but it is not the absolute thing people want.

Hardiman1892d ago (Edited 1892d ago )

This, it's a neat feature but most have no idea what it is. What it is, is a PR talking point that is constantly being stirred up by M$ and its media partners!

If things are more like they were during the early 360 days this 100% doesn't come up, at all! Anyone who had been gaming can see what this really is and that's why for me it doesn't hold water!

If you really cared so much about what gamers want then surly you would be killing it in the game department and giving people exciting reasons to buy your machine.

To me this is just trying to change the narrative and nothing more. There have been polls and the majority either doesn't care or doesn't know what it is!

I guess I'd take it more seriously if M$ was leading the market but they aren't and they are behind by quite a considerable amount.

Atom6661892d ago

Lol. Always comes back to MS. Every single time. What exactly is this huge gain they receive from War Groove being cross play? Apparently they're paying them to spread these evil little lies in the media.

Do you realize how dumb that sounds? Cut the nonsense already.

There's a whole generation of gamers growing up right now who will not accept the old, walled-garden approach. Cross play will happen eventually. Yes, even with Sony. Keep up your conspiracy theories if you want, but that's the reality.

Why will it happen? Because it 100% makes sense to do it. You know what doesn't make sense? Telling someone that the online game they bought, which is 100% identical to their friends' copy, won't allow them to play together. Where else do we accept that kind of approach in 2019?

Locking out cross play only makes sense to stakeholders. With devs, publishers, and users benefitting from it, I know who I'm rooting for.

Enjoy your dividend check.

Hardiman1892d ago (Edited 1892d ago )

Conspiracy theories, really?!?! My man it's obvious where this smoke is coming from and why it's coming.

I also find it comical the whole protecting shareholders narrative because that's exactly what I picture when I think of say M$ or EA because they have more capital than anyone but the future they want is sterile and corporate!

It'd be different if the market leader wasn't funding games that are such a risk the other big boys can't seem to grasp how to do it because they can't chop them up and sell them back in pieces. So if you can't compete it's always best to use that capital as smear campaigns and this happens in politics or any arena where there is a very powerful entity. Todd Howard was trashing Sony about crossplay saying they were the reason Fallout 76 wouldn't have crossplay with PS4, Xbox and PC but then walked it back. He outright lied! PS4 has more crossplay titles than anyone, anyone!

Again if the Xbox division was where it once was(when I was a paying customer) we are having a completely different conversation.

But bravo for trying to paint the most powerful yet very much behind company as some sort of savior to the downtrodden!

Atom6661892d ago

Lmao...

So how much did they pay War Groove devs again?

Godmars2901891d ago

@Atom666:
"What exactly is this huge gain (MS) receive"

Downplay of Sony.

And the "old" gamer generation want full content or value for initial purchase price over the "Games as Service" mentality companies are pushing and making younger gamers become accustom to.

Sharky2311891d ago

I say that Sony will be fine with cross play in the next gen of consoles. Why would they just give the competition money when they own the biggest share of the market. Not to mention it’s the end of this gen. Why change now.

gamer78041891d ago

so wait, you decided when to take an idea seriously , depending on who comes up with the idea and their market position? An idea is either good or bad, regardless of where it originated from... wow...

Brave_Losers_Unite1891d ago

Its probably because Microsoft is trying the games as a service and with Sony not in, they are going to struggle

Atom6661891d ago (Edited 1891d ago )

@ Godsmar

Lol. You guys kill me.

So MS pays devs to talk about crossplay in an elaborate effort to downplay Sony? No, that's not stupid at all. Seems totally legit actually. All those gamers will assuredly rush out to Xbox upon hearing that War Groove isn't cross play!!!!

If it's not an unfounded conspiracy theory, then I assume you guys have links or proof?

Should I wait?

In reality, what's the bad side to 3rd party dev's getting crossplay? What's the bad side to gamers?

Instead of crying conspiracy, I would love for someone to actually state why it's a bad thing. Or post links of proof that it is a conspiracy...

Let's pretend that MS exits gaming tomorrow (because it really isn't about them). Now argue against cross play in some way that doesn't involve "Sony cant possibly do wrong" cheerleading.

starchild1891d ago

Crossplay is good for gamers. Anybody arguing against it is doing it for fanboy reasons. Is it the end all be all? No, of course not. No single thing is the end all be all. And I've literally never heard anybody saying it is. It's just a good thing for gamers that will help games thrive better and allow us to play with our friends on other platforms.

sinspirit1891d ago

@Atom666

Deciding on a new console purchase because of features like cross-play, that only appear like ethical, morally, and pro-consumer decisions while not having any exclusive games and innovative features. It's like watching a politically correct SJW film because it includes everyone and gives the illusion of unity and grandeur. But, it's actually a business trying to exploit trends, headlines, and seeking attention wherever possible to get publicity, followers, and to distract from their terrible deeds.

You ever read into PETA and how bad that company is? At any given chance they will try to act caring about animals. But, their actions speak otherwise. They take any chance to seem caring and twist news constantly. They never address their mistakes directly, or at all. Would you let them distract you with sensationalism and media publications or would you point them out?

Now look at Microsoft. They certainly act caring about gamers. But, after 10 years of neglect, boring exclusives and long release schedules with little exception, pushing non-core gamer devices so strongly that their audience suffers, misleading/fake stage demos, number tossing, and now hiding important numbers to distract from any poor performance, pushing services, pushing PR and sensational terms down everyones throats several times, paying people to positively advertise XBox and to not state it's a promotion(there is actual evidence, primarily the Youtube incident), etcetera.

Well, the point of XBox online trying to be connected to anything is to gain as many XBox/Windows online users as possible so their Marketplace has more adoption as well as platform readiness when they almost inevitably shift from being a real console to a SFF(Small Form Factor) PC producer(like the MSI Trident and probably smaller and still made like a console), but it will be just like the SteamOS boxes that failed to sell. But, if they can sell a custom WindowsOS that routes you directly to their marketplace and keeps you connected through them, while they can have you connected to friends on any platform, they will have a huge advantage that will continue to transfer over to general PC users that will also use the same marketplace so they get more revenue. They have no hope of competing with Steam. So, they will clearly target the gaming PC hype while benefiting from the popularity of a traditional console. They know the next XBox will make or break them. They aren't trying to be the good guys here for no reason. They're trying to exploit a "new" market and keep in the graces of current owners.

Bronxs151891d ago

exactly ignorance is bliss. people have no idea what it is and sony wants to keep people in the dark. these same ppl that don't want it cus they have no idea what it is will be appauled to learn that hey i could have played game x with my friend all this time even tho he has switch and i have ps4?

or wait you mean to tell me i bought a ps4 to play with my friends when i didn't need to because i could have done it from my xbox?? there was a switch that the dev's could have flipped and it woudl have worked but sony didn't allow it?

sony's hope is people never know how easy it was so that yes others would buy a ps4 to play with their friends. sony was looking to keep their walls up for hardware sales of course - thats smart business. but for microsoft they want to break down those walls and connect games - and thats whats smart for microsoft's business now. last gen roles were reverse and sony was more open and microsoft blocked it.

none of this changes the fact tho, it's good for gamers and once the general public / casual consumer understands this Sony will look liek the bad guy for not wanting to allow it.

1891d ago
rlow11890d ago

It's a cheap shot period. Why? Because you offer no proof that MS is paying out. If you can actually come up with facts on this and just not your opinion from a arm chair perspective, then you would be making news on all gaming websites.........That said, is MS pushing that in the media as a advantage to the market leader (Sony)? Yes, it's called competition. That thing that all companies do. Sound off as loud as they can so they can sell their goods. So from MS perspective, of course they and any other game maker who want their game played by as many people as possible are going to push for this..... I'm sure Sony will jump on the bandwagon in some capacity and I understand that their approach is cautious. They want to convert as many people from the PS4 to the PS5. Nothing wrong with that. Remember, back when the PS3 was behind it was Sony that first suggested cross play...... I'm old school and like owning the software and I see alot of games today that remind me of the old arcades, keep putting those quarters in to play.... But to say that MS is doing all these underhanded tactics, or not doing them without proof.....well that's just two people from the arm chair doing what we do best....speculating.

bouzebbal1890d ago

I don't give a crap about cross play... If that was that big of a deal PS4 won't be continuing to sell like got cake..
Consoles are popular by the games they offer, and nothing can beat PS4 in terms of variety and high quality software.

Atom6661890d ago

@sin

Did you really just include a PETA rant in that? That's a first.

Two things though:

1. Nothing in your post addresses the fact that THIS IS NOT ABOUT MICROSOFT.

2. If the next Xbox is their last attempt, cross play will still happen, and we'll be better off for it.

Godmars2901890d ago

@Atom666:
How is this not about MS when MS leads crossplay in terms of tech, promotion and mentality?

Also, when MS launched the 360 they hired a number of gaming related internet personalities to promote the system and create a fanbase around it. Then there's money they dumped into sites like Polygon.

It may not be a direct conspiracy, but they've certainly influenced gaming culture as sure as EA and Activision have tried to legitimize and popularize lootboxes.

andibandit1890d ago (Edited 1890d ago )

look at some of the most played games on consoles
Fortnite
GTA V
MineCraft
Apex
COD

Im not saying these are my kind of games, but obviously cross play would be a great thing, especially for the kids who cant afford 2-3 consoles.

Atom6661890d ago (Edited 1890d ago )

@godsmar

MS should just take a page out of Sony's book. Instead of Alliwantforxmasisapsp.com, MS should launch Alliwantfromsonyiscrossplay.co m.

At least then you guys would have some support for all of your deflection and whining.

sinspirit1890d ago (Edited 1890d ago )

@Atom6665

"At least then you guys would have some support for all of your deflection and whining."

Crossplay is just the new backwards compatibility deflection for lack of good exclusives and content. Notice how backwards compatibility bragging is being drowned out by cross-play this and that? Literally because cross-play is a catchy term, you can find some way to twist Sony into being the bad guy, and you have no substantial product to put on display. You just glue yourself to excuses until the next ones come. Every post you make defending XBox and nudging Sony is deflection and whining until you learn to blame Microsoft and stop forgiving them for ignoring gamers actual needs.

Yes. Comparisons are a thing. Try to keep in context. Hint: Comparisons can rely on other topics/categories and stay in context.

This is entirely about Microsoft. Did you not hear that Microsoft is trying to implement XBox API for any Switch games that want it? Now they push more and more rumors to market XBox on anything they possibly can; again by pushing rumors that even GamePass will be on Switch. Sony is giving them a hard no. Shocker, they already have their own GamePass service with more games both for downloading and streaming. Microsoft is just trying to manipulate the hype train yet again. Microsoft's whole plan is to deflect and push hyped ideas for every failure they have. Luckily, they have a plethora of bad consumers to help with that agenda.

It's already been shown that Sony supports Cross-Play. They supported it well before XBox and XBox is the one that turned it down multiple times in the first place. Sony showed intent to do it again now that MS is desperate for good PR and more player counts. Developers have to meet with Sony to do it.

Do people have to tell you about Todd Howard and small studios trash talking Sony about how great cross-play would be, and then having no intent to go through with it when they said they were up for it? You know it's to build their relations with MS and to gain publicity, right? They don't actually care 95% of the time.

Exactly this, people just want to make every small negative a massive problem simply because sony and the PS4 are doing so damn good this gen and it makes fanboys insecure. It's dumb, just enjoy that someone is keeping competition hot, and that in some way the one to beat is raising the industry for everyone. You think MS would have went and acquired all those studios and put Rare back on making actual games if it weren't for Sony showing off their first party muscle.

I look at everything like this, one platforms strengths are other platforms aspirations. Just like Backwards Compatibility, not a game breaker to me, but would be sweet to have, doesn't mean i hate Sony for not having it in the PS4, or MS for doing something i want in a system i don't have. Now with their BC showing it to be something held in high regard we're getting several patents for PS5 BC headed by Mark Cerny himself.

But not having this is nothing, even if we do have it what does that change? what? makes it easier to matchmake in dying MP games? allows you to play with a friend who's on another system? yeah those are cool but it's something that affects very few people

nirwanda1891d ago

If Sony did BC next generation I probably won't go back to ms, I used to choose the console with best gpu, but I have loads of downloads from psplus etc that it would be a big deal this time.
As for cross play I personally believe it's important to keep control with a walled garden system as the pc side has more access to mods that could influence gameplay, also power differences frame rate , draw distances, control schemes, aim bots etc could ruin the experience in consoles.

Sono4211891d ago

I just don't understand why Sony has changed their stance on it, I mean it has no negative impact, with crossplay you could now play with friends who own other consoles, and games with small player bases would have better matchmaking, the only downside is losing ptential forced sales aka someone is forced to buy a PS4 because they want to play with their friends, but crossplay would negate that, I feel like that would be a such a small percentage though.

SegaGamer1891d ago

I haven't spoken to a single person that cares all that much about cross play. The only time I see a big reaction to it is when people in the media go on about it and then we get a few fanboy comments condemning Sony.

Things have gone a lot quieter when it comes to cross play in recent months and I haven't seen a single person talking about it.

It's a nice thing to have but it's such a small issue that I can't even pretend to get worked up by it.

If only the media were this vocal over real problems in gaming, like how infested the industry has become with parasites that are trying to milk it's customers for every penny they have.

Pickledpepper1891d ago (Edited 1891d ago )

I care about cross play. I own all platforms, Xbox downstairs and PlayStation upstairs, my son plays ps and I play Xbox and my other son on the switch having a blast playing together in fortnite just wishing they would do the same for apex.

gamer78041890d ago

Really? 8/10 of my buddies want it, only if done right where we can party up together. Maybe go and meet more people? either way small sample size doesn't make for a good statistic.

rainslacker1891d ago

Googling study results about this is hard for today's journalist. More so, even if they have facts they don't care about forming a sensible opinion based on those facts, and instead rely on hyperbole to state their case.

If journalist could grow some balls and instead of writing an article which is as pointless and poorly researched random forum comment, maybe people would become more informed instead of the hyperbole growing and spreading to make the world more stupid than it already is.

notachance1891d ago

it's dispatches.cheatcc.com, almost every other day they either put out MS feel-good article or Sony trashtalk article
at least write some actual news sometimes instead of daily "opinion article" goddamn

Brazz1891d ago

I agree, only a vocal minority want crossplay, and most of than are people on other platforms.

Fluttershy771891d ago

I'd love Backwards Compatibility for the future, I think it's a great thing for the consumer... Who cares about Crossplay...?!!!
Some games have "region lock", idk how to call it: if you are in eastern Europe you can only play with eastern Europe people: Change that first!

drunkenspy0071891d ago

Dispatches.cheatcc.com is just clickbait crap. They use a tactic of making broad, blanket statements to get people to click. You'll never find anything of value, they just want that click.

gamer78041891d ago

yah people want it, WHEN it is implemented right, like with the new rocket league update, allowing people to crossplay and form parties with voice chat. just just random matchups. So yah, it is a big deal, thats why it Weill keep being talked about until most games have it.

DrumBeat1891d ago

"Cross-play is the absolute thing people want"

I don't think about it at all. I just want good games and better performance.

trooper_1891d ago (Edited 1891d ago )

Wow, did this guy do a consensus for crossplay that he knows that everyone needs it?

I would think that people want great games to convince them to buy one console over the other, not old games you can play on old systems.

Redlife2g1891d ago

Lol tell me about it. I purposely bought a console that my friends chose as well. crossplay means nothing to me.

Kumakai1891d ago

says every person who only cares about playstation. i have all 3 consoles. i welcome cross play as it just makes my gaming easier. i can play whatever game has the best performance with anyone on any other system... except playstation... for no reason. that's stupid. if the game is available on all platforms and you paid for it, you should be able to play whoever you want. its all the same service.

FGHFGHFGH1890d ago

Really what games are you playing with any other system?

babadivad1891d ago

I actually want cross play. It's dumb that player bases are separated in this day and age. There should be in game lobbies for cross play and single platform.

senorfartcushion1890d ago

Why are you taking offense? You're not Sony. You're not even on Sony's side.

Eonjay1890d ago

Look up the word 'absolute'. The sentence means that cross play is more important to gamers than the actual quality of games themselves.

It is more proof that the entire cross play conversation has entered the realm of hyperbole.

senorfartcushion1890d ago

I still don't get why you are annoyed so much.

Not everyone wants crossplay.

Ok.

And?

Why does it make you so angry? Don't you think getting angry over something like this is fighting hyperbole with melodrama - and thus making the situation worse.

Eonjay1890d ago

The statement is hyperbole. Why don't you understand something so basic and rudimentary? Being factual and calling out ridiculous statements isn't melodramatic.

You can't frame honest discussion in hyperbole. Don't you get tired of it?

Neonridr1890d ago

I agree that it isn't an essential feature. But there's no reason we all shouldn't have it in 2019. There is zero reason to deny gamers of any platform to be able to play against each other. Imagine if AMD and Intel players couldn't play against each other..

solideagle1891d ago

People have to ask question why cross play is needed? To make the community large right?
PS4 community is already large enough to find matches within few minutes. The only time I miss cross play is when my PC friends want to play with me e.g. Monster Hunter.
I think it should be there, so friends from different platform can co-op play :)

nunley331891d ago

Sony has been doing PC cross-play since PS2 years. I play with PC friends daily on Final Fantasy 14 on PS4 and did so on PS3. It'll branch out to more games but xbox people talk about because of their small install base.

badz1491891d ago

so...does Monster Hunter have cross-play? No, right? but I don't see anybody bringing torch and pitchfork over to Capcom's headquarters and ridicule them every single day like clockwork in countless articles for it. if cross-play is really THAT important, why not start with pushing those devs with the biggest MP games out there like Activision, EA, Ubisoft, R* etc.? their games don't have cross-play at all and even Bethesda whom promised cross-play backed out and that backlash to Bethesda ended in less than a month!

this cross-play agenda reeks of MS propaganda and it's disgusting!

lxeasy1891d ago

Sony just needs to do the right thing and allow crossplay like Microsoft and Nintendo

BlackTar1871891d ago

Lol do the right thing.

You think way to highly of yourself and your entitled generation. Giving you what you want does not = the right thing.

ILostMyMind1891d ago (Edited 1891d ago )

No, they don't. They need to continue to make the PlayStation community bigger and better. It does not matter if other communities are dying in dust.

Quetzll1890d ago

Cross play is a super convenient feature and should be standard. It wouldn't hurt anyone. Finally got to play with a certain buddy on rocket league just last night. He refused to buy an Xbox, and I refuse to buy the game twice. Now we don't have to make any compromises.

It's a stupidly simple feature and the only reason it's not standard is because CEOs don't want it to be, because it would affect their tri-annual billionaire vacations and their $1000 dinners.

Options are always better anyway

slavish01892d ago

We all knew this... Unfortunately

Rimeskeem1892d ago

I agree, dropping the ball into a pool of success.

rainslacker1891d ago (Edited 1891d ago )

More like kicking the ball out of the park so others can't play. But it's Sony's ball to drop or kick, and that's what happens when you go.around saying that the balls in Sony's court like everyone did with cross play. Nevermind that it was in ms court a decade prior...nope Sony doesn't get that much time. Sony must provide immediate results, because it's not like this didn't hit the fan as soon as people misappropriated the rocket league devs quote to Sony stating nothing more than their policy on cross play to him

Atticus_finch1891d ago

You're right. The balls has to be dropped after the game is over and the winner is clear.

RememberThe3571891d ago

Right? People are acting like the game pass news is this righteous move but MS wouldn't even be considering any of it if they could actually sell consoles and make games.

DigitalRaptor1890d ago (Edited 1890d ago )

Sony has more cross-play enabled games than Microsoft.

Yet it's somehow a more urgent issue for Sony to fix. Reminds me of the mods "controversy" where Fallout 4 and Skyrim had mods on Xbox and Sony were more restrictive about it, and to this day we have almost no more mods on consoles... and not even Microsoft made the effort to enable mods on their first-party games, but people wanted Sony's head on a platter. Fast forward almost 4 years and nobody, NOBODY cares.

No, this is just like all the other things that people see Microsoft doing and think that Sony must do the same or they're "dropping the ball". Dropping the ball for Sony would be releasing shit games every year even though the generation is almost over and you're supposed to be harvesting the fruits of a dedication to quality.

Majin-vegeta1892d ago

If that were the case. Why arent people dropping the PS4 systems and opting for the ones with crossplay?🤔

Tross1891d ago

Because people care more about actual key selling points like games, and less about neat but nonessential features.

rainslacker1891d ago

Cross play only seems like it would be as selling point for a console,if comparable consoles all.offered it, and if they didn't, it seems a pointless thing to consider since you won't get it anyways. I also wouldn't trust the media or the companies involved, and certainly not the forum goers to really make the facts known well enough to base a decision on the principal of the matter.

The Wood1891d ago (Edited 1891d ago )

It's just point scoring. . Trust me the same guys who keep going on about this are quiet or have super swerves why free to play games aren't actually free to play because ms are the only ones who put them behind a pay wall. I thought them guys wanted more heads to shoot at. . .. . ..

It's like poor people giving money advice to the rich or spectators having noting but negative things to say about winners like LeBron James or Floyd Mayweather. Use that energy on getting quality games to play on your own console. . Cross play isn't saving the Xbox from the demolition they're suffering at the hand of the console that hasn't been as quick to adopt this feature. . . Priorities people

trooper_1891d ago

Exactly, you’d think crossplay would sell consoles on the other side. But of course the media likes to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

andibandit1890d ago

you're assuming people want crossplay above all else....I think we both know that is rarely the case.

I'll be honest tho, there's only been one time where I would've liked crossplay...friend of mine sold his PS4 to buy a XB1X(yeah go figure) for RDR2, while i played RDR2 on PS4.

You can refund any game you've purchased as long as it hasn't been longer than two weeks, and you've played less than 2 hours. I wish they would change it to 3 hours because some RPG's have so much exposition that you may only get an hour total of complete gameplay. That's my only knock on it. I've refunded plenty of stuff I was just curious to try. I typically stay away from Early Access titles which are the only ones affected by this policy change.
