How Sony May Be Dropping the Ball

Cross-play is the absolute thing people want, with more and more games and platforms offering the feature. Minecraft, Fortnite, Rocket League, and even smaller indie games like Wargroove offer it on the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Paladins even offers cross-play and cross-progression. It may be harping on it, but Sony is the one system that isn't exactly embracing cross-play yet. Worse, we are getting answers that don't always seem definitive or encouraging about it. It might even sound like doubletalk.

This, it's a neat feature but most have no idea what it is. What it is, is a PR talking point that is constantly being stirred up by M$ and its media partners!

If things are more like they were during the early 360 days this 100% doesn't come up, at all! Anyone who had been gaming can see what this really is and that's why for me it doesn't hold water!

If you really cared so much about what gamers want then surly you would be killing it in the game department and giving people exciting reasons to buy your machine.

To me this is just trying to change the narrative and nothing more. There have been polls and the majority either doesn't care or doesn't know what it is!

I guess I'd take it more seriously if M$ was leading the market but they aren't and they are behind by quite a considerable amount.

There's a whole generation of gamers growing up right now who will not accept the old, walled-garden approach. Cross play will happen eventually. Yes, even with Sony. Keep up your conspiracy theories if you want, but that's the reality.

Why will it happen? Because it 100% makes sense to do it. You know what doesn't make sense? Telling someone that the online game they bought, which is 100% identical to their friends' copy, won't allow them to play together. Where else do we accept that kind of approach in 2019?

Locking out cross play only makes sense to stakeholders. With devs, publishers, and users benefitting from it, I know who I'm rooting for.

I also find it comical the whole protecting shareholders narrative because that's exactly what I picture when I think of say M$ or EA because they have more capital than anyone but the future they want is sterile and corporate!

It'd be different if the market leader wasn't funding games that are such a risk the other big boys can't seem to grasp how to do it because they can't chop them up and sell them back in pieces. So if you can't compete it's always best to use that capital as smear campaigns and this happens in politics or any arena where there is a very powerful entity. Todd Howard was trashing Sony about crossplay saying they were the reason Fallout 76 wouldn't have crossplay with PS4, Xbox and PC but then walked it back. He outright lied! PS4 has more crossplay titles than anyone, anyone!

Again if the Xbox division was where it once was(when I was a paying customer) we are having a completely different conversation.

Deciding on a new console purchase because of features like cross-play, that only appear like ethical, morally, and pro-consumer decisions while not having any exclusive games and innovative features. It's like watching a politically correct SJW film because it includes everyone and gives the illusion of unity and grandeur. You ever read into PETA and how bad that company is? At any given chance they will try to act caring about animals. But, their actions speak otherwise. Would you let them distract you with sensationalism and media publications or would you point them out?

Now look at Microsoft. They certainly act caring about gamers. But, after 10 years of neglect, boring exclusives and long release schedules with little exception, pushing non-core gamer devices so strongly that their audience suffers, misleading/fake stage demos, number tossing, and now hiding important numbers to distract from any poor performance, pushing services, pushing PR and sensational terms down everyones throats several times, paying people to positively advertise XBox and to not state it's a promotion(there is actual evidence, primarily the Youtube incident), etcetera.

Well, the point of XBox online trying to be connected to anything is to gain as many XBox/Windows online users as possible so their Marketplace has more adoption as well as platform readiness when they almost inevitably shift from being a real console to a SFF(Small Form Factor) PC producer(like the MSI Trident and probably smaller and still made like a console), but it will be just like the SteamOS boxes that failed to sell. But, if they can sell a custom WindowsOS that routes you directly to their marketplace and keeps you connected through them, while they can have you connected to friends on any platform, they will have a huge advantage that will continue to transfer over to general PC users that will also use the same marketplace so they get more revenue. They have no hope of competing with Steam. So, they will clearly target the gaming PC hype while benefiting from the popularity of a traditional console. They know the next XBox will make or break them. They aren't trying to be the good guys here for no reason. They're trying to exploit a "new" market and keep in the graces of current owners.

sony's hope is people never know how easy it was so that yes others would buy a ps4 to play with their friends. sony was looking to keep their walls up for hardware sales of course - thats smart business. but for microsoft they want to break down those walls and connect games - and thats whats smart for microsoft's business now. last gen roles were reverse and sony was more open and microsoft blocked it.

Also, when MS launched the 360 they hired a number of gaming related internet personalities to promote the system and create a fanbase around it. Then there's money they dumped into sites like Polygon.

It may not be a direct conspiracy, but they've certainly influenced gaming culture as sure as EA and Activision have tried to legitimize and popularize lootboxes.

Crossplay is just the new backwards compatibility deflection for lack of good exclusives and content. Notice how backwards compatibility bragging is being drowned out by cross-play this and that? This is entirely about Microsoft. Did you not hear that Microsoft is trying to implement XBox API for any Switch games that want it? Now they push more and more rumors to market XBox on anything they possibly can; again by pushing rumors that even GamePass will be on Switch. Sony is giving them a hard no. Shocker, they already have their own GamePass service with more games both for downloading and streaming. Microsoft is just trying to manipulate the hype train yet again. Microsoft's whole plan is to deflect and push hyped ideas for every failure they have. Luckily, they have a plethora of bad consumers to help with that agenda.

It's already been shown that Sony supports Cross-Play. They supported it well before XBox and XBox is the one that turned it down multiple times in the first place. Sony showed intent to do it again now that MS is desperate for good PR and more player counts. Developers have to meet with Sony to do it.

Do people have to tell you about Todd Howard and small studios trash talking Sony about how great cross-play would be, and then having no intent to go through with it when they said they were up for it? You know it's to build their relations with MS and to gain publicity, right? They don't actually care 95% of the time.

I look at everything like this, one platforms strengths are other platforms aspirations. If Sony did BC next generation I probably won't go back to ms, I used to choose the console with best gpu, but I have loads of downloads from psplus etc that it would be a big deal this time.
As for cross play I personally believe it's important to keep control with a walled garden system as the pc side has more access to mods that could influence gameplay, also power differences frame rate , draw distances, control schemes, aim bots etc could ruin the experience in consoles.

I haven't spoken to a single person that cares all that much about cross play. The only time I see a big reaction to it is when people in the media go on about it and then we get a few fanboy comments condemning Sony.

Things have gone a lot quieter when it comes to cross play in recent months and I haven't seen a single person talking about it.

Sony has been doing PC cross-play since PS2 years. I play with PC friends daily on Final Fantasy 14 on PS4 and did so on PS3. It'll branch out to more games but xbox people talk about because of their small install base.

Cross play is a super convenient feature and should be standard. It wouldn't hurt anyone. Finally got to play with a certain buddy on rocket league just last night. He refused to buy an Xbox, and I refuse to buy the game twice. Now we don't have to make any compromises.

Yet it's somehow a more urgent issue for Sony to fix. Example...no where on that list do I see Microsoft Bingo which is crossplay between PC, mobile, HoloLens and Surface Hub. No Fallout Shelter, or the many many MANY crossplay titles in Microsoft Store on PC that is crossplay with mobile which is in the thousands.

Then theirs the fact that out of these titles...how many of them were developed/published by SONY THEMSELVES??? Almost none of them! 😄😄😄 Well I appreciate your concern Dano, but I think ill be alright in this case. Ya see the description you pulled off Wiki doesn't explain the whole story clearly. Sure, the most common feature of a crossplay title is in its PVP MP, actually playing a game with people on multiple platforms...however, cross play also refers to being able to SWITCH platforms on the fly and continue playing, picking up right where you left off on the next platform. Leaderboard are also apart of crossplay...pitting the gamers score or times VS others across multiple platforms and being apart of the same pool even though you might be on another platform. Its not as black and white as you want it to appear. Its called asynchronous MP. A single player game can also have crossplay by simply letting the gamer use multiple platforms to play its campaign, yet the service and progression travels with you from platform to platform. You are correct in that it needs to have an online component...however, that online component is not limited to just PVP. Microsoft however supports this all.

You then tried to breakdown each game and disprove its crossplay nature...howver, you did so with a very limited understanding of all that crossplay entails. Take Halo: Spartan Assault as an example...it is crossplay because for starters...I can jump back and forth between PC and mobile and keep my progression...but also it has leaderboards that track every gamer that plays the title across both PC and mobile and rates them on the leaderboards for things like scores and times. Again asynchronous MP. This type of goof on your part covered a lot of games that you failed to recognize...games like Tiny Troopers, Video Kid, The Long Dark, etc. Other games you just got flat out wrong even if we were going by your strict understanding of it. Games like Dragon Mania Legends, Asphalt 8, Overkill 3, Microsoft Bingo and other all have PVP MP across multiple platforms in Microsoft's ecosystem. You mentioned FINAL FANTASY IX as "Also on PlayStation, NOT owned or developed by MS"...well OK...that's interesting because I never implied any of these games were exclusives, but the fact remains that FINAL FANTASY IX IS crossplay in Microsoft's ecosystem, regardless of it being available on PS...that has nothing to do with it. I play FINAL FANTASY IX on both my X AND Surface Go and my progress travels with me from platform to platform. Look at Asphalt 8 as an example...its on every platform known to man haha but in Microsoft's ecosystem, its a crossplatform game, that was my only point. Furthermore, if we are only counting titles that is developed and published by the platform holders, then that means Sony has ZERO crossplay titles at all!!! Which means Microsoft has more by default as Sony doesn't produce such titles haha.

Lastly...I never said I didn't accept crossplay titles in Sony's ecosystem...I said I find it funny that you want to clam Sony as a leader in this space when they don't even produce crossplay titles themselves anymore. You don't add the number of platforms where a game supports cross play. If Xbox has cross play with Switch/PC/IOS/Android, that doesn't count as 4 cross play titles with Xbox, so he wasn't "limiting cross-play titles to very few platforms."

Danoman is absolutely right. No one has to go so far back in time. This generation started with Sony being the only ones to support Cross-platform play. That's the reaaon final fantasy 14 didn't release in 2014 on xbox one because Microsoft didn't allow it. Google it. If it is going to as important as people like to think why are more people not jumping to MS console? The truth is simple, PlayStation is the market leader and has become that leader due to content, diverse quality content. That won't change because a few want cross play.
PlayStation is defined, we all know what it stands for and we all know what to expect, it keeps customers minds clear on what Sony offer, that can not be said about MS as they have even confused their user base as you are demonstrating. People who dont want crossplay clearly never popped an old favourite game only to find just a couple of hundred people playing, and knowing another couple of hundred are playing on each other console.

Crossplay would allow game to last much longer. When a game starts dropping players, it creates a cascading effect where because less people are playing, more are leaving, meaning even less players. Literally EVERYONE wins by having crossplay become an industry standard.

Only the biggest fanboys and the dumbests are against that.

I certainly have never said anything like that. And I've never come across anyone else saying that either. I think Sony does an incredible job with their first party output and I want them to continue doing that, but what does that have to do with crossplay?

I can see some negative motivations behind comments from supporter of cross-play. Probably, this is the reality of console war.

Naturally, a competition results in certain level of segmentation ( or segregation, I say.), a fine line between winner and loser. Of course, you can cross the line anytime you want. That is a catch of a business competition.
However, participants of 'console wars' are trapped in fanboyism and acting as if they cannot change certain product's group they chose years ago. This is where I see real motivation of the cross-play supporters came from.

Do you want PS4 to fully support cross-play, XBOX and Nintendo fanboys?
It's easy, just two steps. First, turn Sony into a company of negative campaign. Then treat PS community like second-crass citizen.
In no time, they will start screaming about a cross-play.
Oh, don't expect PC gamer to support you. They are getting fair share of the segmentation problem in these days.

well that's what it feels like for me whenever i see these stupid articles saying Sony is dropping the stupid cross play ball. i never think about it EVER! until MS paid hacks to write this garbage.

Oh! and if you think it's not MS behind this just look at how they are trying to infect nintendo with that garbage $10 per month A and AA game service.

If you want to play with your friends, the majority owning the ps4, then go buy one it's cheap now and you'll have a ton of "REAL" AAA games to play with some of the best yet to come.

It would be irresponsible for Sony to just open the flood gates and let cross-play in without preparing their systems before for a nice integration on every term. From friends, messages, voice-chat protocols, privacy and of course updating policies to reflect what information is stored and where. Right now, with everything clearly preparing for PS5 and an already announced PSN overhaul, this has no priority unless you are already integrating it into the system as a result of this overhaul.
Microsoft readied all of this last generation already, it didn't just flip a switch and open the gates. The system was already there because of XBOX-PC integration. Sony can do this on due time, but not irresponsably fast. Fortnite was an exception and probably a product of that moment.
P.D: don't worry about what other platforms will say, once CrossPlay is in, CrossSave will be the next thing, probable. Or the "Netflix of videogames" that is GamePass and supposedly not PsNow.

It's a great feature/option. Not sure what the big deal is, I've played fortnight with peeps from PC and playstation even switch, and it was a very similar experience. It's all good whether it happens or not. I don't think all games need it but, games with a heavy online community like COD,fortnite,Apex etc could make it a better experience for all people. Why should I have to purchase your console to play a third party game.

I don't have online friends. When I play online, I just play with whoever's online at the moment when I log in. There is literally no possible way for me to tell if someone is playing through cross-play. I'm pretty sure I am not alone here, hell, I'm pretty sure I'm not in the minority, and the PS online community is big enough that it makes no difference. The only people this affects is people who play the same game on multiple platforms or people who have friends who play on other consoles, both very specific groups. To most PlayStation players, this is a non-issue.

Why wouldn’t any want cross play?? Look at games like On Rush, Titanfall 2, For Honour, and Evolve these games would have greatly appreciated cross play and that’s just to name a few.
