Cross-play is "making the gaming experience better", says Gaijin CEO Anton Yudintsev.

Sony again. I hope they put players first! Dev want this!

PoopsMcGee1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

Cross play, in my experience, is a negative rather than a positive so "players" should beware. In Rocket League, the wait time to get a match has increased due to false starts and other factors and the player count hasn't budged much. Cross play increases the problem of an uneven playing field, too. The only positive is for smaller online based titles and all it does is prolong the inevitable decline of their user count for a bit.

The bad outweighs the good (playing against friends on other platforms) by far IMO

starchild1923d ago

That's not true. And even if it were true it wouldn't necessarily be attributable to crossplay. There's no inherent reason that wait times should increase when different types of devices are connecting to a server. PC gamers have a wide variety of hardware setups, but wait times are no longer than in console games.

Having the combined player bases from every platform would always increase the player count. How would it not?

The idea that there will be problems with "an uneven playing field" is just more alarmist bunk. PC gaming once again proves this isn't an issue. Despite the fact that PC gamers have a wide range of hardware in terms of specs and performance we play together in multiplayer games just fine. Any slight disadvantage a hardware setup may give you is easily nullified by simply adapting to it. It doesn't have any real effect on how the games are played or enjoyed. And the effect isn't any greater than the effect console players experience using different TVs with different sizes, different image quality, and very different amounts of input lag. Not to mention that multiplatform games don't necessarily perform the same on base and enhanced consoles anyway.

Anybody arguing against crossplay at this point is just being a corporate cheerleader hyping whatever their favorite console is good at and downplaying whatever it's not good at.

sprinterboy1923d ago

I've noticed the rl problems

PoopsMcGee1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

It is true. But if it feels better to label me as lying then go ahead and do yer worst. There are plusses and minuses to cross play but the plusses get all the print with no mention of the drawbacks.

I have no dog in the console race dawg and to imply I'm a "corporate cheerleader" couldn't be farther from the truth. The only reason cross play is becoming such a fad suddenly is because it is message board ammo for some of the cheerleaders you rightly put down.

FGHFGHFGH1923d ago

@ starchild
How many pc games can crossplay from windows with linux? How about with mac? Shouldn't they all play across any operating system?

Bronxs151923d ago

"Cross play, in my experience, is a negative rather than a positive so "players" should beware. In Rocket League, the wait time to get a match has increased due to false starts and other factors and the player count hasn't budged much"

WOW! Misinformation at it's finest!

i'm a player and i don't give a rats @ss about crossplay.

S2Killinit1923d ago

Its the same dev. Second check came in the mail.

King_Noctis1923d ago

Check from whom? And for what?

sampsonon1922d ago

when MS takes down the pay wall for F2P games then sony should allow cross play. oh!? you say that MS won't do that and that people shouldn't care? the irony.

I don't want to play this game regardless. This is clearly for publicity.

rainslacker1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

Doubt the guy would have even said anything about it if Gamingbolt didn't ask the question.

Also, cross play is a feature of a platform. If it's around, it's great, if it's not, gaming will go on just as it always has. Cross play isn't absolutely vital to the success of the future of gaming or the industry, nor is it likely to be a vital aspect of what devs or players want for the future. I'd wager more people would want BC over cross play, and to date, cross play has never been a factor to a systems success or the success of the industry, even when it's been available. MS has had cross play available for less than a year now, Sony had it for over a decade before, and the industry kept going on, and no one really cared until Spencer decided saw a way to get some brownie points in the console war. Before the Rocket League guy said something, I didn't see a single person asking about cross play, or criticizing MS over not having it, but because of the way the RL guy phrased his response, it became Sony's fault, even though MS would have told him the same thing because both had the policy that cross play can't be made available across consoles. .

Just because the company whose console is going to come in dead last wants to make a fuss about it, doesn't mean that it's vitally important, or any kind of future.

lxeasy1922d ago

Sony needs to listen to the gamers and dev and allow crossplay to happen.

sampsonon1922d ago (Edited 1922d ago )

playstation gamers could careless. it's the ones that bought that other console with less users that want it because almost all their friends bought a PS. bad decisions shouldn't dictate what other people want or need. next time buy the better console, like your friends, and you won't be so lonely when you play.

MS wants xbox to be a service and sony wants a traditional console. don't budge sony or like a virus MS will make your echo system sick.

Shikoku1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

Not as long as there are different platforms there is no cross play as future nonsense. Sorry its just not that big of a deal to me and I have feeling from reading comments on other cross play articles it matters little to most gamers at large as well.

Yeah yeah down vote buy the platform your Friends are on or make new ones. Stop trying to force nonsense on everyone because its what you want.

TheUndertaker851923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

“Yeah yeah down vote buy the platform your Friends are on or make new ones. Stop trying to force nonsense on everyone because its what you want.”

Intriguing. Is Sony then not forcing you to buy a console specific to their brand to play with friends? Even better aren’t you forcing the “nonsense” that nobody wants crossplay?

Stop trying to segregate gamers from other gamers and friends from friends for nothing more than potential corporate gain. I’d also imagine if you’re basing friendships on specific console ownership then ditching friends for a plastic box of priority you DEFINITELY shouldn’t be allowed to talk about multiplayer oriented interactions as your value of friendship and other human interactions is very, very low. I mean as you said. Place a plastic box before friends. If your friends aren’t on your plastic box of choice get new friends. The box is fine. 🙄

RememberThe3571923d ago

Bro just stick to PC. I buy consoles for the consistency and stability. I'm not anti open platform, it's just that's not what consoles are. We can have both.

Next we're gonna be complaining about how we can't upgrade the parts in our consoles.

trouble_bubble1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

Uh oh Dad’s angry lol! Guy just got scolded about values of human interaction and segregation. Thanks for letting us breathe your air.

Mr_Writer851923d ago

@shikoku
There is nothing wrong with games having a combined community, it just means people can keep on playing their favourite games for longer and make new friends regardless of platform.

starchild1923d ago

No, a very tiny minority (a few thousand maybe) of fanboy extremists argue against it simply because their favorite brand doesn't seem too favorable toward it. Those fanatics don't represent the tens of millions of gamers in the world. What sensible gamer would ever argue against something that's good for gamers, good for games and good for developers?

RememberThe3571923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

Well maybe if you actually read a rebuttal to these comments you'd see that there are drawbacks. You might not care about those drawbacks but some people do, that doesn't make us fanatics or irrational.

Security, cheating, stability, quality, all things that become compromised when opening up a closed network. One security scare and Sony is gonna shut it all down. I'd really rather they focus on strengthening their security, working on new features, regulating their player base, stabilizing their network, ect...

As I've said before, PC is an open platform, everything you seem to want consoles to be PC already is. Have at it.

rainslacker1923d ago

Actually, studies show that the vast majority are indifferent to cross play. Very few actually say they don't want it, and much less than the majority say they care enough that its an important feature for them.

When you want to talk majorities, remember that any vocal talk on forums, rarely reflects the majority, because the majority is usually clueless, or apathetic, or just plain indifferent. The minority making a big deal about it on forums is a small minority compared to those saying they don't, and those saying anything at all on the topic are an even greater minority than the general buying public.

If you're going to use hyperbole and generalization to make your case, then at least try to make it have some basis in reality. Like, if I were so inclined, I could look up the cross play study, which was posted on here maybe 3 months ago. But I don't do that kind of thing anymore, because I know people don't accept citation when it's made available, and you like to harass Sony over their decisions, so your bias is pretty clear.

sampsonon1922d ago

most people don't give a shitt about cross play accept xbox gamers because their console of choice is a massive failure.

you guys want to fight for something? try telling MS to stop putting up a pay wall for FREE GAMES lol

Hedstrom1923d ago

How and why is this the future?

Mr_Writer851923d ago

@Hedstorm

Because its better for gamers and developmers in the long run.

Combining platforms will reduce server cost, and enable games to last longer.

If a game has 100 Xbox players, 600 pc players and 500 PS4 players, that's all not great numbers and people may struggle to get games, they then get bored and move on and the game dies.

But combined the player base is nearly double of any one platform. That makes it easier to find a game. The game then survives a bit longer.

Hedstrom1923d ago

Why then have diffrent platforms? Do we want games that last forever, in that studios dont move on to diffrent projects. That gaas becomes the norm?

Fishy Fingers1923d ago

A game being online for longer doesn’t mean the developers can’t move on. It simply means they don’t turn of the servers due to low player counts (per platform).

Nothing to do with gaas whatsoever.

King_Noctis1923d ago

@Hedstrom

No, games shouldn’t last forever. What we are talking about is bigger player pool which help some games that have no chance of survival last abit longer. And why have different platform? Exclusives, thats why.

Hedstrom1923d ago (Edited 1923d ago )

To fishy and king: Yes! When games start to dwindle i can see the point. But untill then let people play on equal terms with the same fps, resolution (i know mid-gen fucks this up, but im against that to) and bugs. If everything just dwindles you could just scrap competition altogether, have only one console. Or scrap consoles and just have pc.

I understand why some people advocate for cross play, and thats by no mean wrong. My biggest problem is that the gaming media is 100% with cross play. Not one talks about the negatives. And by a poll by Eurogamer only 12% actualy cares about cross play! Isnt that insane when you compare with how much coverage it gets?

Mr_Writer851922d ago

@hedstorm

What negatives? Any negatives (not that I can think of any) are vastly outweighed by the positives.

sampsonon1922d ago

no what's better for these devs? if MS stops charging people to play fee to play games. why aren't these devs crying about that? losers all.

rainslacker1923d ago

Because "Dev says".

It's right in the title. As we all know, when Gamingbolt asks a leading question, and cites an out of context quote to make an inciteful headline, it's always true.

Josh Sawyer Reflects on Design Evolution: From Icewind Dale to Pentiment

Josh Sawyer is a name that has been familiar to RPG fans for decades. He's worked on Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and most recently Pentiment. How did he get into game development, how has his design philosophy changed over the years, and why did he decide to do Pentiment a little differently?

thorstein13h ago(Edited 13h ago)

Those are some great games. Icewind Dale I & II are underrated.

If Larian made Icewind Dale III, I'd lose my mind.

What a fantastic, thorough interview.
