Nintendo Lowers 3DS Forecast Following Lower Than Expected Sales

VGChartz: "Nintendo earlier lowered its forecast of the Nintendo Switch for the current fiscal year ending March 31, 2019 from 20 million to 17 million.

The company has now revealed it has lowered its shipment forecast for the Nintendo 3DS during the same period from four million units worldwide to 2.6 million units."

In my opinion, 17 million is still great for the Switch. Glad to see it doing well. It was inevitable though that 3DS would decline as people move on to the Switch as the go-to portable, as well as a home console. 3DS had a great run, but I really like having a true console quality system in the palm of my hands. (ok yes, not as powerful as the PS4 and XB1, but games do look great on the portable screen. I'm not much of a docked player as it is.)

The 3DS has been out for over 7 years now. It's time to retire it. Only natural for companies to move on to more powerful hardware. And since the Switch doubles as a portable, it makes sense to focus your efforts there. 3DS still had a great run.

What excites me is knowing that here in the near future they can move their focus their to just 1 device now. (mobile phones aside) Maybe that can lead to the most robust library Nintendo has had in a long time. Developers/Publishers who were iffy about jumping in on support before may be reconsidering their stance now.

I guess I'm just really optimistic about it as a handheld, taking over that space that is opening up. I would have love a Vita 2, but that doesn't seem likely to happen.

Purely console gamers may not be as wow'ed by it when viewed in that way. If not a fan of Nintendo 1st party titles, it's a hard sell as just a console. For instance, I'll never play Doom Or Wolfenstein docked. The resolution just is pretty shoddy. However, when played in handheld, they become some of the best handheld FPS games ever made. (Aside from my beloved Killzone Mercenaries)

Handheld is already one of the biggest markets for Nintendo, history has shown. Now if I can play it on the TV also, that's just icing on the cake. Aside from the Doom & Wolfenstein examples, a lot of the other Nintendo titles do still look great on the big screen.

They do need to get their game pricing under control. I do see that as a major flaw right now. I'm still new to the system, only having had it 3 months. The only reason I have as many games for it now as I do is because of Holiday discounts. Even then, 41.99 still seems high for some 59.99 titles that felt as if they should have been cheaper at launch.

OtterX - totally agree. Nintendo can just focus on one market now that encompasses everyone. Rather than spreading themselves too thin between two separate platforms.

Sadly Nintendo games always tend to hold their value. Shrewd business practices, no doubt. I guess they feel that everyone is going to buy BOTW or Mario Odyssey, etc. So if they keep the prices up they make more money. They do have the Nintendo Selects program, which we should start to see some legacy titles enter hopefully. Sony has always done a great job of pricing even their first party stuff at reasonable prices once they are past their prime. Nintendo could do well to learn a thing or two there.

Yea, although there a number of examples of indie games being sold for retail prices also. Just off the top of my head, The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth for 39.99. (currently on sale for 19.99). The Binding of Isaac has always been a good little indie, but I played it years ago. I haven't played the expansions, but even the Afterbirth versions on other platforms you can get for 14.99 or less.

Hollow Knight did it right though and I bought it the same day I bought my Switch bc of that. (and bc it's a damn good game) I hope more developers and publishers follow suit.

I've heard the term "Switch Tax" thrown around a lot. It applies to many games, not just 1st party titles. Doom and Wolfenstein again are other examples of this.

Well, Nintendo is kind of killing it off with little to nothing new being developed and released for it. All signs point to the switch, so it makes sense for the attention from gamers to have shifted.

Zelda Replay: Majora's Mask

VGChartz's Evan Norris: "Is Ocarina of Time as legendary as I remembered it? For the most part, yes. In spite of a handful of missteps — a few obtuse puzzles, some tedious backtracking, and a clunky stealth sequence — I don't believe the last 23 years have been unkind to it. Ocarina remains a brilliant example of the medium, a landmark game that shaped the future of its own franchise and 3D gaming in general. After more than two decades it retains its inventive dungeon design, challenging puzzles, dynamic combat, wistful storyline, unforgettable music, and empowering open-air freedom. I feel confident calling it one of the greatest games of the fifth generation, even if I'm no longer prepared to list it among the five best games ever made."

Pure unadulterated fun. They don't make them like this anymore...especially not the triple A industry.

Back when video rental was a thing, I rented out Majoria's Mask, I never finished it though. I did buy the 3DS version before the eshop shutdown, so maybe one day I'll finally play through the whole thing, it's amazing how well these games hold up though. I briefly played Ocarina of Time for a while and it was really fun.
