Neocrisis: IGN changed the Fallout 3 Review *PS3*

Neocrisis: Is this becoming a trend with game review sites? In the first IGN review, they say that the PS3 version of the game has some major issues. However in the edited version of the review, they completely remove any mention of the PS3.

IGN is very fair and they were fair to change what was an honest mistake. The Playstation 3 delivers on all fronts and is the only true next gen experience with its stability, free online service, standard HDD, etc. the list goes on.

It's quite possible the first review was done with an unfinished version of the game, then they got the finished product and it was all good. Anyway, I'm sure IGN will release a statement pretty soon.

The PS3 version of Fallout 3 is 'technically' inferior... but people try to make a much bigger deal out of it than it really is. It's like a person being a quarter of an inch taller than you and them calling you 'short'. You are shorter... but it's such a marginal difference that few are going to notice unless you're back to back. I find it a bit silly to even brag about such a thing.

Granted, that PSN bug is something that could be troublesome and needs to get worked out. And there's apparently some 'muddier' looking textures on the PS3 version... but regardless of the console (or PC) you buy it for... you're likely to get a great experience and it will essentially be the same. Unless of course a few better looking patches of dirt really turn you on. But just as with many mutliplatform games... some people try to get you thinking you're missing out on something if you don't have their preferred console. If you have an Xbox 360, get it for that. If you have a PS3, get it for that. A PC? Get it for that. Two of those or more? Well, you've got options and it's up to you what to go for.

I personally got it for my PS3 despite having a 360. I know there's some out there now, "But Tacki, WHY?! How could you opt for the INFERIOR version!" Well, I went with the one I FELT like getting. I wouldn't bother with any downloadable content and I don't care for achievements (or even trophies that much). I wanted to play it on my PS3. And being that I have more games for my PS3 I think the case fits in better with my collection when it's displayed. However, I did get Dead Space for my 360 because I wanted the Ultra Limited Edition. Y'see... that's the beauty of choice. We can all choose and nobody's 'wrong' for choosing one edition over another.

I know the fanboys will never stop... as a gamer it's sad to see the focus really being taken off the game. Instead of talking about what a great experience we're having or could have... we get this childish 'my console can beat up your console' behavior. It's almost disheartening. I thought gamers play games... not analyze pixels.

I just don't understand why some people are concerned about what others are getting from their gaming experience. I've said it many times... whether another person has it worse or better... it won't change YOUR experience in the least. If it somehow can then we should all be worried about whether or not we have the BEST tv out there and the BEST surround sound system. Why it would be so bad for some to accept that we're all going to get what is potentially a very good game is beyond my comprehension.

@ everyone else.......review build??? come on! that's the dumbest fanboy excuse ever. and you have to realize how silly you sound trying to cover for your system of choice. they gave them the review build (a week in advance) and it just happened to have special bugs??? i don't know about you, but if i were making a product and wanted good reviews from the "reputable" websites, i wouldn't send them some inferior product. i'd send the best possible one. That's why McDonalds advertisements show a burger that looks 10x better than what you order. you let EVERYONE see the best you have to offer, then gives them something a li'l bit more inferior once they are sold on said product.

i don't know why they changed their review, but i know it wasn't because they got one disc that had errors, then 3 days later had a new disc and re-reviewed it.

i am getting incredibly sick of these fanboys trying to cover for their system like it's their child and he just killed the neighbors dog. it makes no sense. if your system is consistently churning out inferior 3rd party products, maybe it's time to take a hard look at your loyalties and move on to where the better software goes. this fanboy nonsense has played its course. it's beat. nobody with any shred of dignity would ever stand up for a corporation when they only think of you as a demographic and a dollar sign. and nobody with any intelligence would constantly seek out reasons for them not to be upset about investing money in a company or system that has time and time again let them down. it's time for the 25 year old gamers to stop being 14 and start acting their age.

I recently said IGN was my only trusted review site, but it's quickly going downhill it appears, even though Tacki is probably right and the issues were pretty small... IGN apparently believed them to be significant enough to be mentioned in the review at first, then, probably due to pressure from X person/company/whatever, they changed it, WRONG thing to do.

Well your point was very well researched and well written, your analogy fails to do justice of the 'technical' inferiority. Fallout 3 freezes for a second or two when anything that has to do with PSN pops up, and it also gets blurry at some points. It's not a quarter of an inch difference, it's more of a 1" or 1 1/2" difference, freezing is not a minuscule difference, neither is blurriness.

There is only one problem with that statement (not to get technical or be a killjoy lol) but it known that the smaller you are the more energy you need to heat your body. That is why smaller mamals like rodents are always hungry and moving around alot. They need the extra energy and movement to keep their bodies at a certain temp. Same reason why larger mamals need only a little bit a food per sitting. Their own body weight allows the body to heat itself with only a little enery output.

That "bluryness" seams to me to be an effect when the game goes in pause mode - but returns immediately (so to fast to really go into pause). The bug, that is, is it goes in pause mode when you get a friend status update message. No game goes in pause mode when you get messages like that. That's a bug in the game, wonder why they missed that. But this has nothing to do with a general game bug or bluryness or what not. Just a wrong system event handling in the game, me thinks.

But I haven't seen any report where PS3 gamers complain that the (released) game is broken beyond believe. Can someone point me to these complaints? Its just so strange IMO that PS3 "issues" are always blown out of proportion. Hey, I even played the Orange Box and before that I though that game is unplayable. Far off. It plays just fine. And that was the worst example AFAIR.

i disagree... I believe resistance 2 deserves the score it got. Judging by the beta, the amount of time this game will take from you is astonishing. The game feels solid in every way and expands on every multiplayer idea ever conceived.

IGN is almost always saying the PS3 version of a multiplat is better despite a general consensus from critics that the 360 version runs and/or looks better. For example, IGN said GTA 4 ran better on the PS3 than the 360 when everyone else was saying the exact opposite and that the 360 version looked and ran better or they both were about equal:

Serious question but... what is the appeal of cross game chat? If I'm entrenched in a battle in CoD4 single player... the last thing I care about is who signs on to my buddy list. I think cross game chat is a necessity for me, and 8-man chat makes things a lot easier with the coming update in the NXE. Quite honestly, when I get home from work or chilling with my friends, I'd go play COD4 or Fable II or something and I see my bud get on. I can catch up with him and get a game set up or something. Granted that text messaging works the same, it's a lot more convenient with cross game chat.

Please stop refering to XBL as having a bunch more features than PSN. XBL has Netflix, and that is fine if you use it, but I don't have a Netflix account nor do I intend on getting one. Besides Sony has their own movie download system. We don't have TV shows, but I don't watch TV anyway and don't want to. The only feature that XBL has that PSN doesn't is the cross game chat. I do admit that I do want that for the PSN. That would be a lot easier than sending text messages. But when the controller qwerty keyboard comes out, it may fill the void enough. But I don't think that one feature is worth $50. Having both consoles I would rather put that $50 to a game than a subscription to a service that doesn't really give me anything more than I already have for free.

On Topic: Having not played the game, I am just guessing that perhaps there was a patch released to stop the freezing problem making the old review null and void in its previous state.

Its funny - the ones that don't have the options that live has are the ones that say - there is no need for those features - they don't understand them, and wouldn't ever use them....whereas the ones that do have it all say its awsome, they use it all the time, its a very convient way to keep in contact with your online friends during gameplay..etc...

Bottom line - Live has more functionality as of this moment than PSN. Sony loyalists can argue all they want but it doesn't change the obvious. I will continue to pay a pathetically low cost of $50 a year for the amazing LIVE features.

You get what you pay for and right now i think PSN should remain FREE.

This is a PC game. And it ported very well on the 360. When they tried to port it to the PS3 they whined and crapped. Why? Developers fault honestly. What else can we say. Either way, whichever system you get it on is good because this is FALLOUT 3. If you do have a computer system with above the system requirements, then definitely hit the PC version for better quality and gameplay.

The graphics on both are the same, but the ps3 got deducted points for glitches and now since glitches have been found in the 360 version it's only fair to give them the same score. The 360 glitch is your save file is ruin and you have to start all over and the 360 version freezes as well. So you can complain about the ps3 blurry when gamertag shows or have to restart 10 hours of gameplay.

And how they said that the PS3 version has framerate problems occuring so frequently that it warrants a lower score. Having played (and still owning) the game I can say that I only experienced those problems once (vehicle section) in Half Life 2 and twice in episode 2.

The real problem with reviews is that there isnt a set guideline of standards in which to judge all games accordingly. Its like they plop a score down and move onto the next without giving any real thought into it.

How can you review one game and lower its score for not having multiplayer and give another game a high score when it doesnt have an online multiplayer like the last score before it? Why take away points for a multiplatform game that has bad textures, long loading times, and occasional framerate problems, but then somehow give an exclusive game a high grade when it suffers from the same problems that a multiplatform game has?

I never played the PS3 version so I cant say if its better or worse.

I do know however that the XB version also struggles with framerate of some of the vehicle sections but never bad enough to bother the gameplay.

I played it. Well, not for long, was a rental and I don't like the game. But anyhow, the reports really sounded that game was unplayable. There was even a video showing the jerk in the framerate once. I could reproduce this easily - by pressing the "quicksave" button. Because that's what it was. HL lets you save your game at any point. They have this "quicksave" feature by pressing and holding triangle, AFAIR. So, well, yeah, it needs to write data to the HDD in that case. This causes a hick up. But the funny thing is, you then see comparison videos between this and a normal gamemode and everybody jumps the gun and starts to complain - even though they haven't played the game.

Another example. FarCry2. It was generally stated the games visuals are worse on the PS3. But then you take a closer look and the detail level is actually higher there (well, disagree with me what ever you want, I don't care). However, it seams it comes with a price of a slight frame dip. And that's what people see. Also, the PS3 runs without sync, the 360 with - which instead causing screen tear there looses a complete frame (you can actually see that).

Other example. definitive lower frame rate in Mercaneries for 360. Nobody talks about that (is a crap game, remember ?).

And the list goes on.

W/E. I don't really care. Not a single game in that list is unplayable. In most cases you won't even notice. Who buys both version anyhow and jerks off because he found one version running worse then the others. A tip from my side if you do. Try to get help.

Ummm.... The freezing glitch has to do with PSN announcements in the corner of the screen. If you aren't connected to the PSN, then you aren't going to get those announcements freezing your game. So not being able to download a patch to fix a problem that won't effect you isn't really a problem.

The only thing removed was the part about the notification glitch when you are playing with your acount online. A glitch i tought from the start was way too big to be left on the retail version(or patched on day 1)

So instead of thinking all the stupid things a lot of you are saying, i think its safe to assume they didnt have a retail version for review and once they were told that's not an issue anymore they took out that part...

BTW, PS3 version is (technically)inferior to 360 version, and the best is on PC, everyone is saying it, just live with it, i know i dont care about a few bugs when the package overall is the same and its this great

The PS3 version of Fallout 3 has a score of 91, the 360 version has a score of 93, the PC version has a score of 94.

Fable 2 has a score of 90 and that didn't affect my enjoyment of the game, but alas, it's rated worse than the "gimped" PS3 version of Fallout 3. So, if Fallout 3 for PS3 is gimped, so is Fable II.

I don't think this is a matter of PS3 v. 360, it's a matter of IGN sucking. They take kickbacks, so they review how they are paid. That's a very scary propostion. Anyone that has full page ads on a site like IGN I'd be weary of the reviews.

I personally just took the site out of my favorites. I can't read it anymore, they rehash reviews from system to system it's a joke. I own a decent pc (altho would need to upgrade my gfx card to play this at top) a ps3 and 360 so i could get it on any. since i don't plan on upgrading my card soon (since it can play most games out on highest) it'll be a choice between 360 and ps3. i would get it on ps3 since i feel the trophies are more appealing than GS but if there really is a problem with the ps3 version i can't be bothered waiting for it to get patched. I own a PS3 and I love my PS3, but the initial review was not wrong. I picked up the game last night and couldn't wait to play it, all of a sudden my game froze for a few seconds, eventually I figured out that it was coz of my notifications. I gotta tell you, it is annoying as @#$@!! I have friends having internet connectivity issues and every time they came online or went offline, the game would freeze. Stopped playing it, I'm not powering it up until they send a patch, which I'm sure they will.

As for all this console war going on, please please just stop, it's irritating to read these things, and I believe that's what the Open Zone is for. We've all made out decision as to which console to get, why are you even bothered by what someone else has and if it's good or not. The only one to make that decision is the owner of the console. If I want an Xbox I'll get one when I'm ready, and no amount of bashing the PS3 is going to change that. Same goes for PS3 fanboys or girls, leave the Xbox fans alone. *sigh*

I have a different view on this. It is entirely possible that IGN is trying to pull a fast one on PS3 by pushing Fallout 3 as GOTY instead of MGS4, LBP or R2. Bethesda obviously messed up on the PS3 version as bugs were reported in numerous site. It is not the hardware's problem but merely a lack of effort from Bethesda. However, the facts remained that the PS3 version is not on par with 360 or PC. IGN has to remove any reference to PS3 because it will be very difficult to justify why they pick Fallout 3 as GOTY when there are known defects in the game regardless of which system it is on, especially how IGN has originally tried to highlight it more on the PS3. There is no way GOTY can go to Fable 2 or Gears of War 2 so a good compromise for Microsoft is a non exclusive game to PS3 like Fallout 3. Just my opinion.

Very good point. The combat is very loose. I'm hoping that it is just one of those games that takes a few days to adjust too. Also why does 3rd person suck so bad? Why does he walk sideways. Those are my two main complaints. With that said. The game has awesome dialog, and story. I'm sure once I get used to the controls and wrap my head around the RPG elements, I will be fine. I have never really been into RPG's. And I only played Oblivion for a few hours. Any tips on how to make my guns stronger?
