Top ten games of 2018

Tom Chick - "First the usual disclaimer. Here are the the notable games I didn’t get to play: Vermintide 2, Return of the Obra Dinn, Pathfinder: Kingmaker, Forza 4, God of War: Dad Edition, Battlefield V, Pillars of Eternity II, Sea of Thieves, Dragon Quest XI, Bard’s Tale IV, The Long Dark, and whatever Yakuza game most recently came out. There are a couple of games that might have been contenders if I’d spent more time with them. I really liked what I saw of Subnautica and Battletech, but for various reasons didn’t explore them as much as I would have liked.

Which is why I’ve enlisted the help of Nick Diamon and Jason McMaster for this year’s list."

GOW *

Spiderman *

RDR2
Astrobot
Moss*
Monster Hunter World
Octopath Traveler
Fallout Shelter *

These are the games I played and/or platinum'd (*)

This site truly has a biased towards Sony. It's pathetic.

Razzer1961d ago

A bias "towards" Sony or against Sony?

NecrumOddBoy1960d ago

Against I mean. I goofed that one. LoL

How do you make a "top ten games of 2018" without playing the top games?

Probably the most uninformed site pretending to consist of journalists on n4g in that case. Why this crap keeps getting posted here....no idea. Oh wait.....coolbeans is why. That's right.

coolbeans1961d ago

I figured that was the whole point of making your own unique list: whittling down your 10 favorites from the potential thousands of games released this year. "...without playing the top games" is just a vacuous declaration.

-"Why this crap keeps getting posted here....no idea. Oh wait.....coolbeans is why. That's right."

You bet! It hits the site's threshold of what's allowable on here, so I see no reason for it to be casually ignored. I guess I have a hankering to circulate controversial ideas that can generate discussion. Let me just set myself up on this whipping post for that. ;)

Razzer1960d ago

'"...without playing the top games" is just a vacuous declaration. '

If there is a vacuous declaration is in the title of the article.

"It hits the site's threshold of what's allowable on here, so I see no reason for it to be casually ignored. I guess I have a hankering to circulate controversial ideas that can generate discussion."

n4g has a threshold for what is allowable? lol....ok, you do you.

coolbeans1960d ago (Edited 1960d ago )

-How? That's the title template most people use when doing their end-of-year lists so that doesn't make sense.

-...yes? You've literally been on the receiving end of submission warnings in the past so this shouldn't be some kind of REVELATION. There is a process to how submissions are handled here. You're sacrificing coherence for another snarky jab. Before Qt3, Tom Chick had written featured articles for bigger gaming sites (including IGN). If Jeff Gertsmann were to make a post-GiantBomb blogging site, he'd pass that same threshold for his new site to be submitted here.

Bottom line: he's paid his dues for Qt3 be allowable on here and petulant posters can't--and shouldn't--take that away.

Razzer1960d ago (Edited 1960d ago )

-Most sites have played enough games to actually justify a Top 10. This site's "notable" omissions disqualifies it from a real top 10. Best case would be "best games I played". Top 10? lol....just nonsense.

-LOL. Why are you talking about my (two) mistakes in article submission procedures as if that means jack shit? You are sacrificing coherence to make a bullshit point. Clearly I was asking about article content quality, not protocols. And it was an actual question. Where are the rules listed about "paying dues" to submit on n4g?

-Bottom line: users do not have the ability to prevent anyone from submitting articles so no idea what point you think you are making.

coolbeans1959d ago (Edited 1959d ago )

-Woah, woah...within two sentences you've cross-connected the idea of not playing 'enough games' with not playing enough of the most notable ones. For one, he's already made several other top 10 lists (like disappointing, overlooked, etc.), along with reviews, this year which suggests at least in the 40's-50's of '18-released games played. Doesn't sound that much different from the typical reviewer at a big publication. Second, having to play x amount of popular games before getting to say "top 10" is lazy gate-keeping at best. Games are games. And if he's more interested in a plethora of 2018's strategy game offerings than several AAA titles then...so what? Further, even if he hypothetically crossed off some of those missed games (like GoW or DQXI) and sincerely kept to his original 10 I get the feeling said criticism would arbitrarily shift to having a terrible/edgy list. But that's just speculation.

And a semantic argument to boot! Just change from "top 10" to "best games [of '18] I played" and there's no complaints from you whatsoever? Jesus dude...isn't it already implied that this is his, and other two contributors', subjective list?

-Well, you did quote-respond my submission explanation with "n4g has a threshold for what is allowable?" Threshold is an expansive term and I was approaching it in respect to submission guidelines and what's allowable, not this wishy-washy 'article quality' aspect. Struck me as relevant to remind you that there are rules in place. And what is this expectation of me to delineate on quality/protocols in this context? You've thrown dirt on me from the get-go AND your retort was obviously structured as a snarky jab (w/ no expectation of changing your mind) rather than genuinely wanting an explanation. Calling that an "actual question" is either historical revisionism or you have tone-deaf way of getting to the bottom of things.

But anyways...I suppose I'll still amuse. https://n4g.com/user/blogpo... [NOTE: "paying his/her dues" will not be found within Christopher's auxiliary guideline blogs he's made. I was utilizing that phrase as shorthand]

Razzer1959d ago (Edited 1959d ago )

Top games are a subset of all games. There is nothing to cross-connect. Yes, one would think that a gaming site would play an expansive, wide variety of games and include the biggest releases of the year before attempting to create a list of "top ten games of 2018". That title is way too broad for the content of the article especially when the article starts with that disclaimer. In my opinion, that disclaimer invalidates the title and yes, "best games I/we played" or something similar would have been more accurate. I think I've been clear on this and there is not point in just repeating it over and over. We do not agree. Simple as that.

As far as the rest, yes my inquiry about "threshold" was a genuine question which is why I was confused when you referenced my submission warnings. Looking back, I should not have called you out in my first post and I apologize for that. The rest was not intended to be snarky, but if it came across as that then I apologize for that as well.

Edit:

This is how I should have referenced your post previously as I think it would have come across as intended:

"It hits the site's threshold of what's allowable on here, so I see no reason for it to be casually ignored."

n4g has a threshold for what is allowable?

"I guess I have a hankering to circulate controversial ideas that can generate discussion."

lol....ok, you do you.

They gotta do better on the premium side for sure. Where are any of those jrpgs from the ps1 Era. Come on Sony.

jznrpg12h ago

Most of the Sony JRPGS have been released. Square has a ton that could be ported over but they would need Squares involvement.

VenomUK11h ago

Crime Boss! I know it hasn't reviewed well but I love the eighties action movie vibe of the trailer but didn't want to risk any money on it so this is a great way for me to play it.

outsider162412h ago

Looking at this list, i gotta ask what is even the point of premium?

raWfodog12h ago

I'm good with just my PS+ Essential

GamerRN8h ago

I have premium, and I'm also wondering why I have it

Xeofate7h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I think there are a ton of good games on Premium, and don't sleep on the movie collection if you like 90's and 2000's movies, the selection is stacked with classics and gets updated pretty regularly.

Abnor_Mal11h ago

G-Police is a game I have fond memories of and will definitely download to replay. I remember controlling your helicopter was a bit difficult and would make my hand cramp having to press all the shoulder buttons to go up and down and I think yaw left and right.

The next game they should add to Classics is Colony Wars, and I wouldn’t mind replaying Nightmare Creatures. I’d also like to replay Black, PSI Ope: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

Redgrave6h ago

Nightmare Creatures, Deathtrap Dungeon, Urban Chaos

MrBaskerville7h ago

G-Police is nice. But might be among the hardest games I've ever played.

Bathyj5h ago

G Police.
I almost want to upgrade for that.

But let's face it, there's no way the game has held up.

DarXyde52m ago

2Xtreme was the first game I ever bought for PS Plus (I still have the PS1 version somewhere).

Game is awful, but it's stupid fun. Like Thrasher: Skate and Destroy.

Man.... Premium has been a massive letdown but this is the only month they don't have a single thing for me. Oh well. I've gotten my money's worth so far and still need to finish up Rebirth and Rise of the Ronin then I'll hop back in to Relink and Helldivers after that.

Petebloodyonion10h ago

RDR2 is a win for Sony and Crime boss is a good fit to help promote a struggling game
but we're far from what was removed this month (including Horizon Zero Dawn)
https://www.pushsquare.com/...

crazyCoconuts10h ago

Yeah I was hoping burning shores would have been added now that it's a year old vs. the base game being removed.
I wouldn't be surprised if both MS and PS continue to either walk back the quality of games in the sub services or increase the price, since it's now clearer to them how cannibalistic these services are

isarai6h ago

The game deserves to struggle, it's garbage

Petebloodyonion3h ago

Indeed it's bad but it does offer incredible Hollywood star power so for free it might draw a crowd while giving a boost to this game.
Just remember Fallout 76 was the biggest turd and yet there are now tons of ppl playing it.

JL29304h ago

How is a 6 year old game a win for anything? Anyone who cares has already played it.

Petebloodyonion3h ago

Simply because ppl do play it!
As much as I don't like it GTA V always managed a boost of ppl when it was offered on Game Pass or PS+.
NOW RDR 2 was never offered on a subscription service.
Again the point isn't about will hardcore gamers play the game because we already played it. it's about having a huge star power game never offered on service that will make casual ppl subscribe to it.

6 Games That Genuinely Deserve A Current-Gen Upgrade

Games such as Mad Max, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Batman: Arkham Knight desperately deserve a modern-day revisit.

thorstein28d ago

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod27d ago (Edited 27d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

exputers27d ago

I see what you did there.

Yi-Long27d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius27d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

Demetrius27d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh
