Nintendo is doing great. Good job big N. Smash is killing it.

IMissJimRyan1977d ago

Switch came as a sucessor of two systems: 3DS and Wii U. If you look at the raw numbers, Nintendo is selling less hardware now than in the 8th generation and a lot less than 7th gen.

We need to contextualize the number to don't be fooled.

Neonridr1977d ago

right.. let's be that person.

septemberindecember1977d ago

Switch isn’t a successor to the 3DS. Otherwise they’d have stopped making 3DS games.

Also, PS4 has sold less systems than the PSP + PS3 (so far). Should we contextualize those sales now too?

CorndogBurglar1977d ago

Nothing you said changes the fact that the Switch is the fastest console of this gen...

King_Noctis1977d ago

....what? The Wii U doesn’t play the 3DS’s game, and the 3DS doesn’t play the Wii U’s game. So how can the Switch be compared to two different consoles?

And look at the upvote for this ridiculous statement.

darthv721977d ago

Switch being a 9th gen platform... it would be correct for it to be the fastest seller.

Switch is not a mid gen refresh, it is its own stand alone system and falls in line with the time frame Nintendo has for generational platform releases, roughly every 5 years +/-. It is their 7th home platform.

S2Killinit1977d ago

Congrates to Nintendo. Im glad they are doing so good. But, its also a little unfair to compare its success like that because the other two hardwares came out at the same time competing with each other for sales. The novelty factor was shares between them.

neutralgamer19921977d ago

Septem

Ps4 has surpassed ps3 and Xbox 360 already.

After the complete abd utter failure of wiiu Nintendo sure are glad switch is doing great

DarXyde1977d ago

Switch is more of a successor to Wii U and is more of an integration and vast expansion of the past two consoles (Wii and Wii U).

It's doing great, Nintendo is doing great, they have much better third party support, and the content is great. In fact, I'm completely expecting Persona 5 and maybe even Persona 4 to hit Switch.

Stop being that guy.

mikeslemonade1977d ago (Edited 1977d ago )

The switch is a last gen console so the title is already wrong. The switch is still half as weak as a Xbox 720p.

You wouldn’t say the iPhone 10s plus is a current gen console? Even that is stronger than the WiiU 1.3(Switch).

deafdani1977d ago (Edited 1977d ago )

Expecting the Switch to sell just as well as the 3DS and Wii U combined in order to be considered a success just because the Switch is a portable-home console hybrid is a fallacious conclusion. You need to factor in a lot of other things, like the fact that the Switch's price is far more expensive than the 3DS', which means that sales expectation should be lower than the 3DS', but higher than the Wii U's (which was similarly priced and is clearly an inferior product). The logical conclusion here would be that the expected sales would be somewhere in the middle between Wii U's low sales - around 13 million, already surpassed - and 3DS' decent (not fantastic) sales - around 74 million so far, I think.

If the Switch manages to sell more than 3DS and Wii U combined, yes, that will make it a smashing success, but your criteria to determine how successful it is is simply flawed on several fronts. It's ironic you say we need to contextualize when your contextualization is very one-sided.

Babadook71976d ago

Switch just got outsold another month in npd. They’re doing incredible. Ps4 is doing still better.

" Smash is killing it" LOL, what else does switch have to play other than shovelware or indie games that you guys love to overhype because them little indie games is all nintendo has.

michellelynn09761976d ago

Xenoblade, Mario, Mario Party, Civilization, Octopath Travler, Bayo 1 and 2, MK8 DK, Mario Tennis, Kirby, Captain Toad, Mario and Rabbids and Gris. A lot of indie smoke most AAA games. Whicha lot of them are just shallow story driven games with little gameplay.

I'm actually surprised but happy with how well they've been doing. It's great to see them have such strong third-party support. A great difference from the Wii and WiiU.

I bet Nintendo detractors are going to avoid this article like the black plague.

IMissJimRyan1977d ago

Nintendo hardware, oposite from Nintendo software, has short legs. The company tends to start with strong support than cut it in the middle of the product life cycle.

King_Noctis1977d ago

Wait...then why do we have so many 3DS revisions? Why the 3DS still getting supported till this day, almost 8 year after launch?

Fastest selling this gen but have yet to win a year because the PS4 is outselling it 2 years in a row. Nintendo apologists are going to ignore this fact like a plague.

michellelynn09761976d ago

Because the PS4 has been on the market for 5 years.

DefenderOfDoom21976d ago

This article is USA sales only . I believe PLAYSTATION 4 is fasted selling worldwide this gen.

badz1491976d ago

@michellelynn0976

so does the Xbone. what's your point?

that wasn't the excuse when the Wii U came out first. so why would it be a valid excuse now?

CaptainObvious8781976d ago

I'm still scratching my head, wondering why it's selling so much.

Considering how underpowered it is along with all the other flaws.

Isn't the Nintendo Switch basically a 9th generation console while the WiiU was an 8th generation console? If we look at it that way, only the Switch has started the 9th gen console while Ps4 and Xbone is still technically 8th gen console.

Dissidia1977d ago

Actually very true. It seems to have blended into this gen though. Almost like it was a Wii U do over.

IMissJimRyan1977d ago

Wii U's comercial failure has some kind of amnesia effect on some people.

n4g.com/news/2202960/why-the-p s4-is-the-best-console-of-this- generation#c-12896445

I said this months ago. Switch is Gen 9 which means it's competing with the PS5 and next Xbox. "Certain folk" on this site are desperate for us to consider it a Gen 8 console because they know Switch will have a massive sales advantage against the PS5 and next Xbox otherwise.

Wii U was Gen 8...Switch is Gen 9. There's NOTHING you can do about that reality besides slamming that disagree button.

1977d ago
Neonridr1977d ago

Well Sony and MS messed everything up with their mid-gen refresh.

JackBNimble1977d ago

So how much of a headstart do you need ?
I can hear Nintendo fanboys claiming victory for next gen alreay with a 30mil sales lead or whatever it is .

rainslacker1976d ago

Sales advantage or not, Switch is going to be massively under powered for "next gen" games. It isn't even up to par for games this gen. It can manage some less demanding games well enough, but if it's going to be considered next gen, consider the power gap between the Switch and the PS5/X2 are going to be exponentially bigger than the Wii and PS3/360. While the switch can manage to squeak out some decent graphics for games of this gen, when people see what the next gen has to offer at the start, they're going to feel that the Switch is no better than the Wii was in comparison. I won't even get into the fact that the system won't even be able to handle game storage sizes next gen.

Nintendo will survive that based on their own franchises, and the fact that as a handheld machine its really quite good. But right now, nintendo fans should be careful how they define these generations, because its going to come bite them in the ass later, when Nintendo either does a mid-gen update of their own, or they just have to accept it as a great handheld console, that will get plenty of support because of the install base and Japan. But don't expect to be playing the mid-tier or AAA next gen titles on it.

A sales advantage doesn't mean much when you have to suddenly not have support because it can't handle the games. I said Nintendo's sales advantage would help them this gen with the WiiU, but ultimately, it didn't, because no one cared, and the WiiU was closer to this gen, than the Switch will be to next gen.

That's the reality of it all. Switch is gen 9 in chronology alone. Nintendo is fine with that. You should be too. There is no reason to try and make it like Switch has some major advantage over the next gen, because based on what I've seen, Switch will be relegated to handheld titles only.

cyber_daemonx1977d ago

Strawman. It's competing currently with what's out currently fgs lol.

darthv721977d ago

It's doing that because Sony and MS are at fault for not wanting to move to next gen just yet. But when they do... then Switch will compete with PS5 and XB2 as well. It's just how things work.

rainslacker1976d ago

@Darth

It's just been 5 years now. Why would they move to a new gen already? Sony is still selling great. MS is doing well enough, and isn't even prepared for next gen yet.

They don't need to start the next gen because Switch is considered a next gen console chronologically. Switch can't even play the AAA games of this gen. It can barely even run most of the mid-tier titles of this gen. Nintendo has put no pressure on Sony or MS, because Nintendo isn't trying to compete directly with them. Switch is a complimentary system to the PS4, even more so since the Vita is defunct. People aren't choosing Switch over PS4/Xbox. People certainly aren't going to pick Switch for their next gen gaming needs in lieu of the PS5/X2.

This whole, "what generation is it", debate is stupid. And people trying to justify how it gives Nintendo an advantage because some people want to call it a next gen system are really missing the point. The Switch will have a greater power disparity between next gen and itself, than the Wii had between the PS3/360.

The switch will do fine because its also a handheld, and it has Nintendo games, which a lot of people like, so for those wanting the home console varient, they get the best of both worlds, because there is nothing to say that Nintendo would even bother with the home market anymore if they didn't do a hybrid. Wii was a exception for them, after several failed generations. NES and SNES were great, but consider that Nintendo has had an equal number of failed home consoles, as they have successful ones. More failed if you say Switch is a handheld, or classify it as a hybrid, since hybrid implies its not a home console, but a mix of the two, and it's only people speculating on why its successful to make it seem like the home console part is a major part in its success.

EddieNX 1977d ago

No the Switch isn't 9th gen, Nintendo have stepped out of traditional "generations" . switch is a gen 1 hybrid if anything.

Fact is , it's outpaced everything else in America.

darthv721977d ago

Switch has not stepped out of traditional generations. The ones who did are MS and Sony. As I said above, generations are defined by time, not specs. Nintendo has an average of 5 years between their platform generations. It's not their fault that MS and Sony want to run longer.

Kribwalker1977d ago

No. The switch is a gen 8 reboot. Nintendo scrapped there Gen 8 system and rebooted. It’s still taking place during the same generation and playing the same generations games.

darthv721977d ago

you can think of it like that... but you would be wrong.

Kribwalker1977d ago (Edited 1977d ago )

ok. then are we gonna claim Nintendo is leading the 9th gen when the next xbox and ps5 release? They are at 24 million right now?

And does that mean the Xbox one is 2nd place this gen no matter what happens with the nintendo switch? Seeing as it has far outsold the wiiU?

darthv721977d ago

Yes to both answers. The WiiU had its chance in the 8th gen and ran it's course. After 5 years Nintendo released the followup platform... hence their 7th home platform and 9th gen system. It is competing with all other platforms and will do so when PS5 and XB2 are released as well.

It really is that simple to follow krib. And despite how the xbo ends this gen it will still be considered in 2nd place to the PS4 and WiiU.

davand1141977d ago

What about the x and the pro are those still considered to be 8th gen even though they're basically completely new consoles with new hardware? I don't think we're going to be able to define consoles by generation anymore since all three console makers released a new console in the middle of the 8th gen.

Blu3_Berry1977d ago

The X and Pro still play ps4 and xbox one games. They are simply beefed up whereas the Switch cannot play WiiU games and vice-versa.

blawren41977d ago

While true, the article is discussing the current generation, which is the consoles available now. Nowhere does it state 8th or 9th gen, which is completely irrelevant anyway. We really need to stop numbering these.

rainslacker1976d ago

Think trying to define things into generations nowadays is kind of dumb myself. They're all competing with one another regardless of what generation they belong to. But defining the switch into a generation completely depends on one's standards for generations. Is it power? Is it the kind of console it is? Is just just a number assigned to how many iterations of consoles since the Commodore first came to market?

To put it in perspective, GameFaqs doesn't even list things in generations anymore. They go by years. They did this because everything was getting kind of convoluted due to the different ways things are released nowadays. Handhelds don't fall neatly into generations. Switch is a chronological next gen system, with better hardware than last gen, but not as good as this gen.

If you're looking at power, X1X muddies up the waters since the console will likely become the base console for next gen, potentially limiting games against Sony's machine which won't require such consideration for compatibility, because they'll define a clean generation for themselves. But the X1X will then become part of next gen as well, carrying over it's user base, which can be a good thing if forced legacy support isn't mandated, but not so good for the devs or consumers if it is required, as the difference in power is going to be too substantial.

All in all, it's kind of a pointless discussion. Generations are fine to discuss games, and I think during a generation its easy enough to define if one is winning or losing, or to say that a company is doing well or sucking ass for that generation. But the definition of a generation means very little nowadays.

RizBiz1976d ago

No. Hardware-wise the Wii was a re-skin of the GameCube and the Wii U was their super-late Gen 7 attempt.
