Just Cause 4 Review - IGN

Rico's new tricks are goofy physics fun, but it's missing a big new idea to call its own.

LucasRuinedChildhood1980d ago

Agreed. I hate when people push the idea that review scores should be irradicated considering they are so useful but of all review systems, having scores with intervals of 0.1 is the weirdest. Intervals of 0.5 I understand.

CrimsonWing691979d ago

Oh man I can’t tell you how much it irks me when I see stuff like 8.75 or this 7.9 nonsense in review scores... like if you’re trying to say it’s so close to an 8 but isn’t then just say 7.

EazyC1979d ago

In defense of these scores, the median is compressed between 75 and 85, so in that regard I can kinda see why they do it. The difference between 75 and 80 is significant

SamPao1979d ago

well, why not. 1-100 its 79 its a perfectly fine score. especially since Metacritic and every other site like that use 1-100 so I would rather have a precice system than a just rounded one.

UnHoly_One1979d ago

metacritic does that because it's an average of a bunch of other different scores.

That is different that one person assigning a score like this.

SamPao1979d ago

I know what you mean but its still the same

LucasRuinedChildhood1980d ago (Edited 1980d ago )

This score is about what I expected. JC4 is very iterative but focusing on adding more crazy stuff isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's looks like an improved Just Cause playground to mess around in. I'll probably pick this up when it's a bit cheaper. I still feel really burned by JC3.

At least it's actually playable on consoles this time around as well. JC3's framerate was so bad (consistently in the low 20s or less when you actually did anything) that I think many people are never going to touch this game. It was one of the worst AAA console ports that I've ever played.

I'm still bewildered by the odd person who claims, "I didn't even notice a thing. Seemed fine to me." How can you not notice unresponsive controls, frequent stuttering and when a game descends into a slideslow? You belong in a madhouse and I'll be joining you if I ever have to play JC3 on a base PS4 ever again.

optimus1979d ago

@Lucas...well i bought the game of the year edition for just cause 3 about a year or so later and didn't experience ANY of the problems you mentioned. maybe it was patched during that time? i bought 4 and so far i'm loving it. the only thing i find a little creepy looking is the new character models but that's only during the cut scenes and doesn't take away from the overall enjoyment of the game....an 8 so far from me and could get higher as i continue to play the game.

LucasRuinedChildhood1979d ago (Edited 1979d ago )

They tried to fix it but they never could. If you can enjoy the game in spite of its technical issues, that's fine man. I'm not imagining the issue though. I genuinely don't understand how you can't notice it. Here's a Digital Foundry analysing the performance half a year after launch: https://youtu.be/lgtewCxSg6...

It's actually kind of disgraceful. Sometimes when Rico is flung backwards by an explosion it looks like it's in slow motion! I don't care about the odd drop here and there but this happens every time you just blow up a small, insignigicant gas station: https://youtu.be/lgtewCxSg6...

I can tell you that I and many other people noticed that simply disconecting from the internet gives Just Cause 3 a noticeable smoother framerate. This applies to all platforms. JC3 is very badly optimized.

badz1491979d ago

@Optimus

JC3 was terribly optimized for months after its release and it is a fact! I still keep the video of the game loading for a challenge that took a whole 7 minutes! the framerate drops were terrible too even after the fix.

and it's not helping that the game itself was terrible shallow with empty maps which serves nothing but just for the sake of being big! the oceans are so vast and wide but NOTHING in them, not even a single collectible found underwater! WTF?

chris2351980d ago

i like this franchise, will finally purchase today after they pulled their dickmove with „pay 20 bucks more to play it 2 days early, pay 10 bucks more to play it 1 day early“ the last couple days. i mean, wtf!? it‘s not that the game is any better bigger or faster when you play it 2 days early. i don‘t know what baffles me more. that they are getting away with this or that there are people out there who actually are falling for this.

Profchaos1980d ago (Edited 1980d ago )

Wait this is out there's been fairly minimal advertising or build up for this I thought it was next year new rtx build should be out to good use with it

badz1491979d ago

just like Darksiders 3, and Hitman 2, this game is sent out to die

TheSaint1979d ago

Then it'll be cheap as chips in a few months.

Profchaos1979d ago

Yeah reviews have been ok but it's such a crowded period just ok doesn't really cut it

Chumdiddy1980d ago (Edited 1980d ago )

Played it and I'd give it a solid 7.5/10, much like the 7/10 I gave JC3. It's better but not much. Most of that extra .5 is because it runa better in console and has a few new ideas. Still, it's a physics sandbox with a thin disguise of taking back an island blah blah blah.
The series peaked at JC2 and has been little more than a physics sandbox since.

It goes next to Hitman and Tropico as the most criminally underdeveloped franchises in gaming. All great concepts with lazy iterations because people still buy and mostly enjoy the half-baked titles. Are they all usually fun? Sure, like 8/10 fun for a couple weeks. Really fleshing them out could make each a AAA 10/10 type title.

Perfect for the person like me who wanted to play Back 4 Blood but didn’t want to pay Back 4 Blood

frostypants480d ago (Edited 480d ago )

B4B is the definition of mediocrity. It feels like it should be good, but it's just...off somehow. Then you remember L4D/L4D2 and how much a remaster of that would be more fun. One day, please, Valve?

Dirty_Lemons480d ago

Sad though isn't it, it had all the genetic makeup needed to be L4D3 - but, as you said, something felt off. Plus I hated that card system. It overcomplicated a great formula.

gold_drake480d ago

yesss DMC 5 and DBZ fighterz, life is strange

its a very good line up not gonna lie

Exvalos479d ago

Those 3 games alone justify the price

gold_drake479d ago

they're pretty solid gaming experience imo xD

monkey602480d ago

I've never played before the storm so I'll give that a go now

gold_drake479d ago

its good, but the OG is still the best

Aloymetal480d ago

DMC 5 time to give it a try.

crazyCoconuts480d ago

I had this on my Steam wishlist... Guess I don't have to buy after all!

Aloymetal480d ago

Yeah, you got lucky. Enjoy it;)

boing1480d ago

Woah, that is pretty solid. Lots of games I'm interested in.
