Nintendo Switch loses shine as killer product for new gaming era

With few attractive titles for the holiday shopping season and shipments on track to fall short of the company’s targets, doubts are growing whether Nintendo Co.’s Switch can ever become a mass-market product.

Yeah because PS4 and Xbox for the holidays have...............
Also, the Switch is selling a ton now (thanks to Pokemon and Smash coming up), I don't think you're gonna be correct.
Patcher? Well, that means the Switch will hit it's target. He is almost always wrong.

Dark_Knightmare21993d ago

Why bring up ps4 and Xbox when their both mass market products especially PS4 that just had its biggest October ever and has had reports of the Spider-Man ps4 bundle selling like hot cakes?

michellelynn09761993d ago

Because they act like the Switch had nothing, which is wrong and the Switch is selling out again like when it first came out. This article is really dumb. PS4 is doing very well, but so is the Switch. This article is acting like it's doomed. Which is simply not true.

JaguarEvolved1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

“All great consoles need a great second year, and Nintendo hasn’t delivered one for the Switch,” said Cornelio Ash, an analyst at William O’Neil & Co. in Los Angeles. “Investors thought over five years they could sell maybe 90 million units. But after this year, that’s looking pretty much impossible.”

This year has been rubbish for the switch and there can be no denying it. If you own the switch and isn't a fanboy then you'd understand. Nintendo acts as if the first eleven months of this year doesn't matter to release games and the only thing they released this year so far that is mediocre and worth any interest is octopath traveller. Next year will be worse for them to sell switch and I think the system has already peaked last year and it'll be all downhill from here. The switch will never sell close to 90 million especially with nintendo barely releasing any games. Maybe whatever new plans they have for the switch revision next year might do something but the Nintendo switch lacks games.

TekoIie1993d ago

@JaguarEvolved

"Next year will be worse for them"

Going to have to stop you there. Bayonetta 3, animal Crossing, Luigis mansion, Core series Pokemon, Daemon X Machina, No More Heroes, Town, Yoshi, Metroid Prime 4 and a few more is not under any measurable sense worse than this year. 2018 was just average right up until the end. You're just trolling at this point.

"The switch will never sell close to 90 million"

So? Sales interest me when it comes to seeing the market and what does and doesn't sell. However, in terms of what's good and bad it plays next to no influence. If you disagree though please tell me how Fortnites sales make the games quality increase. Because its popularity must indicate that its the best game of the generation/s.

mikeslemonade1993d ago

The switch is still a last gen system. That’s why I call it the WiiU 1.3

Red dead redemption 2 there I finished your sentence for you

Also, Spyro, tomb raider, AC odessy for starters

The switch has some awesome stuff to but it's not like it's the only console that does

michellelynn09761993d ago

Red Dead is not PS4 only. Lol

TiredandRetired1993d ago

Michelle: Well you need a PS4 or an XBox One to play it. Take your pick for your other console to own with the Switch. *cough, PS4* Switch makes a great secondary console, but I wouldn't have owned a Switch by itself. Now was the time for me to jump on it though and I'm happy with it for different kind of games. Especially good for my wife and kid, but there's plenty I'm enjoying on my own too.

XbladeTeddy1993d ago

"Also, the Switch is selling a ton now (thanks to Pokemon and Smash coming up)"

And what if you hate Pokemon and don't like Smash? Like me.

Dissidia1993d ago

Then those games aren’t for you. Moving on.

XbladeTeddy1993d ago

@Dissidia: Then the Switch clearly isn't for me if two of their biggest titles coming up are not what I like. Maybe I should move on and not buy one, you're right.

bluefox7551993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

That's always been my issue with Nintendo products since SNES. If you're not into Nintendo games, it really brings nothing to the table. Even this time around, very few AAA third party titles are coming to the switch because it's just not powerful enough, and the ones that are really had to be gimped to make them run.

trooper_1993d ago

Yet another Pokemon and Smash. Like really?

343_Guilty_Spark1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

Newegg had Switches for $259 on eBay with a 10% coupon and they didn’t need sell out. I don’t think the Switch is as hot as you think it is.

I nearly bought one then realized how expensive the games are (even older 1st parties), need a screen protector, lack of 3rd party support, etc et

nighthawk37291993d ago

Honestly, the way that @Michelle is responding is just rude. I bought the switch up front, I want it to be good.

It. Is. Not. Good.

I just blazed through Let's go Pokemon with my wife and just picked up minute and a ps4 game I'd received through PS+ last year, Letter Quest Remastered. I picked up Minit the other night and have already finished it, it was okay. In the past week I have spent $112 dollars for the Pokemon bundle and Minit. Was it worth it? Well, Pokemon was my wife's birthday present, so yeah, but ouch. Minit? As one of the "Must play hidden gems!" that I have struggled to find, no, not really.

There are few games like that where the touch screen is a better way to play, This is the Police, Darkest Dungeon to name a few. Most games come off better on the PS4 and Xbox. There are too many games on the Switch that belong on a phone, too many.

I don't care if they sold a lot of units. Nintendo fans have to stop kissing the ground Nintendo walk on. There is not a large number of good games, there are a handful, and they are not worth the cost. I know too many people that play Breath of the Wild and then SELL THE SWITCH. That's it, done. It's a great game, where are we going though?

Come on guys, hold Nintendo to a higher standard. I've wanted them to meet my expectations since the Wii, they have let me down for over ten years, this is just silly. Sony and Microsoft have at least justified their decisions in my mind a lot more.

TLDR: Come the hell on Nintendo! I give you money, now do good things! Nintendo fans, get it together! You're making gamers look silly.

VariantAEC1988d ago

@michellelynn0976
The source Adobe Digital Insights has predicted these sales figures based only on surveys of online retailers...
This isn't official yet despite Nintendo's statements which didn't include unit sales numbers. This has the potential to boost their stock but little else. When this was announced you'd buy their stock before the abrupt rise and sell the stock the same day or a few days later. This might be a nice boon for them bug ultimately we'll know more in the coming days or by next week.

lellkay1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

Both PS4 and Xbone have strong mass appeal third party games this holidays. Not to mention Playstation is still selling mad Spiderman bundles and God of War sales are super strong still.

Although most of these not personally not to my liking, you can't deny the mass appeal and variety of AC, Fifa, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Fallout (regardless of ratings) Darksiders 3, Hitman 2, Soul Caliber, Tomb Raider and many others all fresh out recently(none of which are available on Switch, minus a botched Fifa port)

The fact the Switch has barley had anything good in terms of console discount/sales doesn't help either. We all know Nintendo hate discounts, but there are literally PS4 bundles with RDR2 and Doom for £249 and sometimes less!

Nintendo are feeling the third party burn this year, as mentioned above they have missed out all them hitters, and many more throughout the year. add in the fact they haven't had a proper game of the year contender either (last year they had two!) hasn't helped!

Sure they got a pokemon port which is a good game, and smash will always be good, but thoose two cant be supplement to all the missing third fire power (plus Sony's heavy first party combo)

Mr_Writer851993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

"Yeah because PS4 and Xbox for the holidays have..............."

"Red Dead is not PS4 only."

No one said it was, but its a game that X1 and PS4 do have and Switch doesn't.

There are a lot more popular games on PS4 and X1 and NOT on Switch, then on Switch and not on PS4 and X1.

Edit:

The Switch could sell more in the holidays than PS4.

But the year isn't just 2 months it's 12, and hasn't the PS4 outsold the Switch every other month around the world?

I'm confident it's WW sales are indeed higher.

michellelynn09761993d ago

Hmmm not really. Pokemon and Smash can rival COD and RDR. Pokemon was the best selling game over the weekend.

nighthawk37291993d ago

Ah yes, Let's Go Pokemon, the game with the same forumula that has been used for the past 25 years. Smash, the game design that has been used for the past... 25 years...

Fine, COD has been around for 15, and I hate it, so points to you. But Red Dead? There is something new coming out, not the same tired stuff over and over. These are two names on a list of new things.

Realms1993d ago

So you are just going to pretend it's not an underpowered console? it's an awesome portable but if that isn't what you are looking for it's lacking in many areas. Unless you absolutely can't do without Nintendo games, I hate to break to you but the Switch is fast becoming the PS vita 2.0 or should we say Indy station.

michellelynn09761993d ago

Yeah, that's why it has DBZ, DS, Civilization VI, Diablo, DQ11, FF12, RE games, etc.

Realms1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

The Switch is getting inferior versions of current generation games and that's even if it get's them because many games are skipping it, it's an underpowered console no matter how you dice it. Like I said cool portable not so good as a console considering what the competition is offering.

Kumakai1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

switch sucks. xbox and ps4 both have way better games that also look and perform better. switch has a fraction of the multiplatform support and most of the exclusives are cartoony kid games. im adult. why do i care about pokemon? i don't. i do care about red dead redemption, black ops 4, etc... you can't even play most AAA games on switch and when you can, they are inferior experiences. i just got rid of my switch cuz it just sat there for like literally almost 8 months.

michellelynn09761993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

That's your opinion. I love the Switch and it has a lot of great games. No one made you the final word. AAA what a joke of a saying. I would much rather play Hollowknight than RDR2 or GOW.

babadivad1993d ago

I tried, and wasn't impressed with the Switch. My cousin loves hers. Collecting dust.

Razuel1992d ago

It has 1 game, Mario. It's not enough man.

I thought to myself before reading the article “Michael Pachter must be behind this”.

Lo and behold I was right.

Nyxus1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

Not just Pachter:

"The Switch is on track to reach 35 million unit shipments by March, according to the average of eight analysts’ estimates compiled by Bloomberg, short of Nintendo’s target of 38 million."

Edit: why the disagrees? Just pointing out that it's not just Pachter, but the average of 8 analysts, as the article says. Or does Pachter consist of 8 people?

TiredandRetired1993d ago

That may be short of their target, but 38 million is already really close, just under the total sales of the XBox One to date. A 2017 system vs a late 2013 system. Still great numbers, they're just projecting really high based on the Switch's fantastic first year. Scaling their expectations is necessary of course.

Neonridr1993d ago

35 million in 2 years is still a very solid showing so far. Considering that's nearly triple what the Wii U did in 5 years on the market. Still plenty of life in this machine and I can't wait to see how 2019 does considering there are a heck of a lot more top tier first party titles releasing.

Razzer1993d ago

So you just skipped down to the part where you saw the word "Pachter" and then responded? You missed a lot.

1992d ago
TiredandRetired1993d ago

This is silly. What you're seeing is not the system losing relevance, it's that the first year was such a blowout year of sales and things are normalizing. It was the fastest selling system in history for many countries, it has already beat the XBox One in lifetime sales in some. It outpaced the sales of the Wii in that 1st year.

It hasn't sold as fast in this second year, but that doesn't mean it's not selling well. It just has stabilized more during the non-holiday months. Most sales data is only including sales up until September of this year. The big holiday rush and deep discounts have started and have already had reports of being the 2nd highest system in sales during this time, behind the PS4.

I just picked mine up at the beginning of this month. A secondary system to my PS4 I've had since launch. I got the Switch on an early Black Friday deal, "Black Weekend" they called it. €249.99; and they were selling like crazy.

TiredandRetired1993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

Don't believe me? Here. This just in:

"REDMOND, Wash., Nov. 28, 2018 – Nintendo Switch set two new records from Thanksgiving to Cyber Monday: It became the best-selling Nintendo console in U.S. history for that five-day period, surpassing even Wii system sales. Nintendo Switch also had its best-selling week ever in the United States. In fact, according to Adobe Analytics, Nintendo Switch was among the most-purchased items online on Thanksgiving Day and the overall top-selling video game product online for the Black Friday-Cyber Monday time period."

*PS4 & Nintendo are both on fire! Together with my gaming laptop, all of my gaming needs are covered.

"doubts are growing whether Nintendo Co.’s Switch can ever become a mass-market product."

Is this a piss take of some sort?

Modern industry thinking in a nutshell there. If it isn't selling a hundred zillion bizziion units and making ALL the money in the world, then it's a failure to these jokers. Absolute clown shoes article. Some people are stealing a living, and these idiots certainly prove that.

Zeldafan641993d ago (Edited 1993d ago )

This was put here for the cultist fanboys (mainly sony fanboys) to have a hate-fest circle-jerk.

chris2351993d ago

i don’t even recognize this subpar gadget as a thing, so, whatever floats your boats *shrugs*

DarXyde1993d ago

Sounds like your recognition isn't worth the cereal box it comes in.

Razzer1993d ago

Then you don't understand what the word "thing" means.

I should make the following a habit:
