Nintendo Insider writes: Its long and rich history has been much debated, but The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has stated that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will never be placed in the chronological timeline.

To be honest, I never loved all the time line story and the book. I never understood why they tried to relate every game.

I just like the idea that there have been multiple incarnations of the hero of time, each in his own time and place. Screw the timeline.

Most of the Zelda games are so loosely connected that there might as well not be a timeline.

Yeah, when you have time travel and parallel universes, it doesn't even really matter when and where they take place lol. It is cool when they purposely design it to fit in with an established game, but the rest, you're just fumbling for pieces. BoTW seems to take place hundreds of thousands of years in the future of any game, and doesn't matter. It's a bit of a letdown, but doesn't take away from enjoying the game.
