I reached chapter 3 and I was still not enjoying myself and almost gave up. My character felt weak and still had no upgrades and no money despite all the hunting and looting. I went to youtube for some tips and realized there are many tutorials and stuff that I missed. I also checked on Reddit some control tweaks that actually make the gameplay better. Then after finally getting used to the feel of the game I started a new playthrough...

I happily take what I said back. I am finally enjoying the game. I think my problem was that I was focused on doing mission and progressing thru the story without taking my time in this world, which the game truly wants you to. Holding Square to loot drawers and stuff so a Arthur picks all the valuable stuff quickly also fixes my complaint with looting in this game. I finally know how to get good and perfect pelts for upgrades, and I finally understand the Cores thing. You just have to keep yourself physically active to upgrade your stats. I like this feature and definitely a much needed break from stupid Skill Trees

For me I wasn’t enjoying it as it felt like work and not fun. That said I can fully appreciate how beautiful the game looks.

I tried several times to get into it, restarted it once but I didn’t have the WANT to play it so I sold it on for £45. In the long run it only cost me a fiver to try the game for a week.

The problem is that the game pushes back way too much the fact that you need a tutorial or strategy guide to make the experience better points to this, Rockstar did a terrible job of explaining how the systems in the game affect the world. Other games have been just as obtuse but where much better at explaining how certain things work. Bloodborne is a good example of a game that suffers from the same thing I almost gave up on that game obviously the feel of both games and themes are different but boy you miss out on a lot because you had no clue as to how or why you should do certain things.

I do admit that the controls could absolutely use a bit of tweaking, but other than that....utterly fantastic game.

Nah they just implemented certain aspects of the game in a bad way into the storyline without ever explaining how the game systems work, for example if you wish to upgrade your satchels early on you can't so don't bother hunting because it's tied to the main quest so you would be wasting your time until you played said mission. IMO other games have implemented better upgrade and progression systems in a better way or at least made it clear what you could or couldn't do before needing to progress in the main storyline.

No, the truth is, games are neither boring nor not boring in any objective sense. A minority of contrarians saying something is boring doesn't make it objectively true any more than a large group of people saying the opposite.

If someone plays a game and has fun with it then it is fun...for that person...and any one else that feels the same way. The opposite, of course, is true too.

I've seen a lot of articles trying to explain why the game isn't boring, or how people just don't get it.

To me, if someone feels bored, then explaining why one feels it isn't, isn't going to change someone else mind on if they feel it's boring. And this game isn't like the movie Inception, where you have to get it to really get what's going on, thus giving you the potential to enjoy it. It's a game, and if someone doesn't get it, it doesn't make them wrong, it makes them not care what there is to get, because that kind of thing isn't important to them. Either that, or the things that bring it down for them, aren't made up by what the developer is trying to do. Like slowing down the game to get people to appreciate the world they made. I think if you have to force people to slow down, it doesn't speak well to one's confidence on if they thought people that want to do that kind of thing will do it on their own.

So what you are saying is you shouldn't complain or have an opinion? I like RDR2 I have played most of the major AAA RPG's this generation and RDR2 is slow period. The story is slow pacing, your characters movement is slow, the upgrading system is slow. The game design is just slow I can see how it can be off putting to some people, the fact that you have to use a strategy guide or video tutorial to make the game experience better is very telling, I hate doing that because it takes away from me organically discovering cool things but RDR2 made me want to go and see a video of how to get perfect pelts, I played Horizon Zero Dawn with a similar upgrade system that was better implemented the hunting in RDR2 just sucks and it's a major way to get upgrades. IMO it's not the amount of things you can do it's that the physics in the game make those tasks feel like chores sometimes.

Except Red Dead Redemption and GTA IV and V had good pacing to their stories. The fact that deniers best defense is "this isn't COD" clearly shows how little you know about story/mission pacing. Nobody is expecting speed like Vanquish or Bayonetta but we would like to be able to move faster than a snail and live in the world the way we want too and not have all this "realism" forced on top of us punishing us for trying to play a video game. No one is saying the game is terrible, just that it's not nearly as perfect as reviewers and fanboys want it to be. The attention to detail is insane and something all developers are going to take note of but players are really punished hard for wanting some more pacing. RDR kept me engaged, travel and mission length weren't unbearable. RDR2 forces an easy 5-minute filler quest into a 40-minute fight with an annoying horse and 40 lawmen with a $100+ bounty that pops up out of nowhere in the middle of the woods if you accidentally bump into someone.

Criticisms need to be made clear so future games can avoid the mistakes.

That's how I see it too. People have different opinions and no matter how generally well received a game is, not everyone is going to like it.

That said, I've been around too long not to notice that there are certainly people who start bandwagons against games for insincere reasons. I don't play Fortnite & I'm not playing BO4 but I will say this I don't hate RDR2 but imo from my first impressions of the game it is not a masterpiece. Imo a masterpiece would have blown me away the first hour or 2 & it didn't do that for me. Ever consider that if those with such a staunch defense weren't acting like this game was akin to the second coming of Christ, that maybe you wouldn't have all these contrarians saying that it's not all its cracked up to be?

And sure you see a lot of the same arguments saying the same thing. While that can be a sign of people just hating if they have nothing else to add, and is quite prevalent in most exclusive titles that release, its also a sign that maybe there are problems that people have with the game when there is enough stuff about why they feel that way also posted to support their viewpoint.

Hell, the reviews for this game have said how slow it is. The people defending it readily admit that its very slow paced....to get you to appreciate the world. The people that like it have said how they'll spend copious time doing the same thing over and over again, with very little progress made in the mean time. They have said how they like how you do all these mundane things, or like how this realism of having to go all around is good.

About the only difference between the list you put forth, and the ones that the supporters put forth, are that one side finds all that stuff people criticize boring, and the other side doesn't.

Hence, people recognize the problems in the game, just their view on if they're actually problems or not is fundamental different.

In other words, it's a purely subjective matter, but the issues exist. Whether they're important to the player is a different matter.

Sounds about right, because for a multi-plat game, this game seems to have an excessive amount of defense surrounding it. Typically, a multi-plat game doesn't really get this kind of attention, and criticisms are more readily accepted, and almost never do I see it becoming a console war matter in terms of the actual quality of the game, because all the criticisms of the game, outside the PS4P HDR issue, are about the things that are common between the console versions....and that's game play, pacing, and and general design of the game itself. None of those things is made better or worse by any given console.

One thing I would have appreciated is... Don't try to make me read a tutorial while I am in the middle of the action.

I lost vital tutorial information because of this. I also was stuck with the default controls. They are frustrating but read some recommended tweaks online and now I will give the game a second chance.

And one more thing... I don't like being judge by the way a play the game. For example, I saw when you finish a mission it gives you a summary and shows how you fail to do some tasks for example:

Find that person in less than 20 seconds. Kill a wolf with a headshot while doing a backflip. WTF? I play the way I want to play.

I can understand why though RDR2 may not be for everyone. Mainly the setting. Westerns don't have the same feel to them as they use to, say 20+yrs ago when they were extremely popular on TV and film. Yeah sure we've had django unchained, to capitalze on the gerne, but that's it.

I simply thought I was just getting too old for these kind of games. By that I mean open worlds with so much to do and so much to see. Sometimes big games like this can be overwhelming, so much so it becomes work and when games become work they truly don't become the fun you hope they would be.

But this wasn't the case with RDR2, the game just starts off slow and builds up quite slowly as well. I felt this game becoming a chore at the start but as I progressed it was becoming more and more fun and hasn't let up since.

There's nothing thrilling about this game. It's simply boring. To me, anyway. As I was trying to complete some Sharpshooter challenges, I realized I wasn't having any actual fun in doing so. Standing on top of a moving train and shooting birds not only bored me, but the reward wasn't exciting at all. Unlocking a new piece of gear never yielded that necessary excitement.

Shootouts bore me as well. They're easy, and I feel as if the guns barely matter. The aftermath is even worse. Looting is boring, and frustrating (sitting next to a campfire instead of looting the body) and time consuming, and not at all exciting.

The story missions can be fun, but they're mostly boring as well. While I certainly appreciate the writing and production value, I just can't have fun playing this. It's a drag to me, through and through.

But... some people don't like that kind of gameplay. Some view it as tedious that you can't whistle for your horse from the other side of the map, or carry more than a couple weapons without going back to your horse to switch them out. Or worry about which weapon to use when hunting whichever animals to maximize the quality of the pelt your procure.

There are a lot of systems in the game that pull the pacing down to a crawl. I'm one of those people that can't stand the systems in it. When I play a game, I want to play for fun. And these systems do not add to that feeling at all.

BUT, I won't shit on people for liking the game, I won't shit on the game for being "bad." It's just the exact opposite of a game for me. I can see the passion and hard work that went into it. And as far as realism goes, the story they try to tell in the game is very mature and doesn't play nice with a carefree experience. All of these pacing things I talk about are obviously deliberate, to suck you down into the world. I can appreciate that.

That being said, is it so strange to think that someone doesn't view the game the same way as you do, and you have to rely on pummeling their opinion to the ground while voicing your own? That seems a bit unfair to me.

Overall I am enjoying the game but there are a few tweeks I would like them to make. Give me true fast travel. I understand why it isn't there, but sometimes I don't have 10 minutes to wait while I watch my cruise control horse galloping to where I want to go. It has put me off from doing stuff in the game because I know it will take forever just getting somewhere.
Crafting is a time sink. Want some coffee? Start a fire. Hit a button to make some coffee. Wait for animation. Hit a button to drink the coffee. Wait for animation. Want to eat? Start a fire. Hold x to cook. wait for animation. Hit another button to eat. Wait for animation.
Want to make tome tonics? Sit at fire. Hit button to make. Wait for animation. Want to stow that or drink it now? Stow it. Hit button, wait for animation. This can easily be fixed. Even if the in game clock has to move to show the passage of time, thats fine. I am not trying spend all day in real time making food.
Want some split point ammo? Sit at camp and hold down button for 10 minutes.
Can we please get the option to speed up skinning animals? It was in the first game and it takes even longer in this one.
Can I please get the ability to run in camps and houses? It shouldn't take me 10 minutes to walk around camp trying to get something done.
Want to search a cabinet? Open door. Wait for animation. Empty. Another drawer? Hit button, wait for animation. Oh, nothing there? Search another drawer? Hit button, wait for animation. Empty again? Sigh.
See how this can be boring?
There has to be a balance between realism and fun gameplay. At this point this game is more of a sim than an old west video game.
