Nintendo Switch has now outsold the GameCube

The Switch has sold 22.86m units, Nintendo revealed in its latest financial update. The GameCube ended up on 21.74m units sold. It's another milestone for the Switch, which Nintendo said "continued to be quite popular" during the six months ending 30th September 2018. During that period, 5.07m Switch consoles were sold, a 3.7 per cent increase year-on-year.

It will be interesting to see if they hit their 20 million forecast this year.

On one hand, sales so far have been kind of slow and they still have just under 15 million to go for October through March.

On the other hand, last quarter saw a 9% YOY increase despite the quarter seeing a weaker software lineup than last year. Q3 this year contains two of Nintendo's biggest franchises and blows last year's Q3 out of the water. Plus there's 2D Mario in Q4 that should help maintain momentum. (Yes, it's a rerelease, but 2D Mario is one of Nintendo's top 3 franchises and so far pretty much all Wii U rereleases have outdone their original releases).

It's gonna take a 50% YOY increase for the second half of the fiscal year to hit that target. They say they're shipping more than enough to hit it. It'll be interesting to see where it ends up.

Smash and Pokemon are going to help drive towards that goal.

Sirk7x2022d ago

They need to advertise the hell out of Pokemon and Smash, and do it smartly.

Smash bigger than Mario Kart?

The 10th Rider2022d ago (Edited 2022d ago )

It's like this

Mario Kart
Pokemon
2D Mario
3D Mario
Smash Bros

I'd say top 5 counts as one of the biggest. Very few franchises in gaming are consistantly on the level of Mario Kart, so if that's your standard very few games are big games.

Everything The 10th Rider said will easily sell over 10 million. Spaltoon 2 and Animal Crossing will also sell over 10 million. Breath of the Wild will easily sell 17 million between both versions.

Oh my I really hope they either port or make a sequel to Mario 3D World! I had so much fun playing with friends/family couch coop!

Nintendo financial results: six months ended September 30, 2018 - Switch at 22.86 million shipped

gprime2022d ago

On an side note, why can't they make joy-cons like the mock-up in the thumbnail? Any joy-con that doesn't cripple my hands to hold for more than 5 minutes would be brilliant

CrimsonWing692022d ago

well the Cube sold less than the N64 so... good job?

Segata2022d ago

Less than 2 years is the key here and by March it will have likely outsold the N64 and be closing in to take over Xbox One. It's selling and a lot. Gamecube was manufactured and sold between 2001 and 2007.

Endless Ocean Luminous Review by Video Chums

“At the end of the day, if you're not playing Endless Ocean Luminous to look at and learn about oceanic creatures then you won't enjoy it as there is little else to it. While not necessarily a bad game, it becomes less and less fun the more you play it and I wouldn't exactly call that the hallmark of a good game either.” - Martijn van Gent from Video Chums.
