Red Dead Redemption 2: The Kotaku Review

Kirk Hamilton writes: From tip to tail, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a profound, glorious downer. It is the rare blockbuster video game that seeks to move players not through empowering gameplay and jubilant heroics, but by relentlessly forcing them to confront decay and despair. It has no heroes, only flawed men and women fighting viciously to survive in a world that seems destined to destroy them.

UltraNova2035d ago (Edited 2035d ago )

Wow, wow....this is easily THE best review I've ever read and some of the best all encompassing writing ever.

Well done Mr Hamilton, well done sir. I wil certainly go through the whole 34 minutes worth of Credits.

Edit: If you want to really appreciate the second part of this review you guy's need to read this https://kotaku.com/inside-r... about Rockstar's working conditions first.

DarXyde2035d ago

You're calling it the best review before playing and beating the game?

A little preemptive, don't you think?

spicelicka2035d ago

To be fair he's he seem to be referring to best written review. You don't need to play the game to appreciate good writing.

DarXyde2035d ago

Spicelicka,

"this is easily THE best review I've ever read and some of the best all encompassing writing ever. "

Keyword: "and"

Unless UltraNova does not know what exactly they are trying to say, they are saying 2 things:

1. This review is easily one of the best reviews ever. (Which is what I'm calling attention to)

2. This is one of the best written reviews. (The part you focused on).

Gr8saiyaman882035d ago

Don't worry, people will also do the same for TLOU Part 2, but worse. They'll get angry when someone like Gamespot doesn't give it a 10/10 before they themselves even played the game. : p

Nitrox2035d ago

@DarXyde- take your pedantry elsewhere. I think most of us understood the point he was trying to make. He was impressed with the quality of the review. Not the accuracy.
smh

deafdani2035d ago

You're understanding it wrong.

He says that:

1. It's the best written review he's ever read and

2. It's one of the best written anything he's ever read. Not just reviews, but generally speaking.

rainslacker2035d ago

Shouldn't a quality review also be accurate? Well written I don't care about as much as said writing accurately describing the game itself.

UltraNova2035d ago (Edited 2035d ago )

Oh man you guys need to relax....I was impressed by the quality of the writing, that's it. Do we really need to extrapolate to death on everything we say here?

No this is not the best review in terms of the game's merits and deficiencies. The author even goes exceedingly far into the whole crunch thing over at Rockstar but the way he ties everything up(his experience with the game and his colleague's crunch article) in a whole is some of, if not the best written piece about games I have ever read.

Common guys...

DarXyde2034d ago

Nitrox,

"@DarXyde- take your pedantry elsewhere. I think most of us understood the point he was trying to make. He was impressed with the quality of the review. Not the accuracy.
smh"

So I'm being pedantic because I read it as it was written?

Okay, son.

You focused on the latter part, but I'm only drawing attention to the former. I only elaborated to explain myself, just as I am doing now, apparently.

angelsx2035d ago

@ultra
Yeah and they get extra pay for that

Christopher2035d ago

Not necessarily. Salaried employees are not held to overtime laws the way hourly or contract-based work is. There's much we don't know and what we do know is from the employees themselves, who are not saying they do get paid enough for the time worked as compensation as well as a heavy reliance on bonuses based on the game's success that is a flat amount for them with an tiered and more open result for upper management (as well as a larger disparity of gain from management to actual workforce).

william_cade2034d ago (Edited 2034d ago )

I'm a serious reader and while this review was well written - it was a bit much. I found myself just reading the 1st and last sentence of every paragraph about half way through. This review reminded of the "Yelp review" episode from South Park: "can't right now honey, I got a five pager on Ruby Tuesdays" (Gerald S19 E4) paraphrased of course.

At any rate, the writing was well done, it's just the application of purpose was lacking.

Orionsangel2035d ago

I don't like reviews that don't end with some kind of review score.

Born2Game832035d ago

Why? because you need it to satisfy your fanboy needs? or like or hate the score based on how you feel about it?

How about you read it and others and make your mind up. Instead of just seeing the score and being blind.

Orionsangel2035d ago (Edited 2035d ago )

Yes I need the satisfaction. Remember there's no demo. You buy a game and have no real idea what to expect. I have to rely on critics. They help us make up our minds whether it's worth purchasing. I need to know what I'm dealing with here before I fork over a lot of money. A 1 or a 10?

SegaGamer2035d ago

@Orionsangel

You buy your games based on a number? So just stick the number 10 on it and you will buy it anyway?

dumahim2035d ago

"You buy a game and have no real idea what to expect. I have to rely on critics. They help us make up our minds whether it's worth purchasing. I need to know what I'm dealing with here before I fork over a lot of money."

Gosh. If only there was some sort of collection of words that could explain how good it is and what you'd be dealing with. Oh, wait...

PlayableGamez-2035d ago

Yes love scores.
They are fun.

PlayableGamez-2035d ago

PS a lot of these written reviews are supper corny.

Tetsujin2035d ago

I have to respectfully disagree. I prefer no scores because one person's 9-10 can be another person's 5-6. I prefer what the review likes and dislikes, and leaves the score to the reader.

starchild2035d ago

I fully agree. This obsession with numerical scores and comparisons has gotten way out of hand. I truly don't care what score someone thinks a game deserves, but if I can read their thoughts on what the game offers and why they feel the way they do about it then it can help me to get a better idea of whether it will be something I will enjoy.

Imortus_san2035d ago

". I need to know what I'm dealing with here before I fork over a lot of money. A 1 or a 10?" - damm, soo many games that get a 9 out of 10, and when I play them I'm like "wtf did this people smoke, it's a clear 6 or 7 to me, pontuation is subjective to people's personal tastes.

PhantomS422035d ago

Aw, you have to actually read in order to understand someone's opinion...Gen Z problems.

deafdani2035d ago

Kotaku has never done numbered reviews. Are you going to complaint every time a Kotaku review is posted here? It's just the way they do it. If you don't like that philosophy, it's fine; there's hundreds of gaming websites out there that have, in fact, numbers in their reviews. Why complain about the outlier?

Orionsangel2035d ago

You shouldn't be so uptight. We're here to have fun.

MadLad2035d ago (Edited 2035d ago )

Yeah.
All of that sensory input needed to create an idea out of the written opinion is just asking too much.

Just throw an 8 or above up so I know to be happy. Or a 7 and below so I know to call the reviewer stupid and claim they wanted clicks.

Orionsangel2035d ago

You just need a headline and a score. The whole review gives away too much information about the game anyway. I wanna go in fresh! Because you're not fully clean unless you're zestfully clean!

carcarias2035d ago (Edited 2035d ago )

Ach, you're getting some downvotes but I know where you're coming from. In an ideal world we wouldn't need a score but peoples writing isn't always as clear as it should be.

After all, I'd imagine we've all experienced the same thing; you read a review that seems to praise all the important stuff and then it gets a 6 or they list a whole bunch of niggles or frustrations but then shove in an 8/10 anyway. It's no wonder people go to metacritic to see what the average of the scores is.

In addition to that, it's just convenient. You can spend an hour+ reading several reviews and still have 20 more to read....or you can look at the average of 40+ scores in just a few moments. If you're like me, you might then read a couple of the worst to see if the problems match up and if they would be something that would bother you. It's just quicker all round.

Orionsangel2035d ago

Played for 3 hours. Loving it! But now I gotta sleep. I'm tired.

https://www.twitch.tv/video...

rainslacker2035d ago

I think the content of the review is more important than the score a reviewer gives it. A score doesn't depict the true nature of a game, and through the written review, you can actually see what the author thought was important, and how the game implemented those things. Through the reading, you can decide if the authors placed the same importance on things that you do, and through the review, its usually easier to see if the author was biased, or fair in their rating scale.

LucasRuinedChildhood2034d ago (Edited 2034d ago )

Wholeheartedly agree. Who has time to read 100+ reviews? I'd rather spend that time actually playing the game. Many of the people who are rallying against scores at the end of a review really are a load of pretentious knobs

william_cade2034d ago

I do. Not having a score leaves it up to me. Even though numbers are not actual either when it comes to reviews.

UnHoly_One2034d ago

If you can't read that review and figure out whether or not you want to play the game then you are beyond help.

That is quite literally the best game review I've ever read.

Putting a score on the end of the review would have been a crime.

Orionsangel2033d ago (Edited 2033d ago )

No, it's not that it's that I don't wanna know anything about the game. These reviews give away too many details. I just want a simple, good or bad?

+ Show (8) more repliesLast reply 2033d ago
nucky642035d ago

THAT was a long and convoluted "review".

nucky642035d ago

next time you look up a word to use, try to understand it's meaning first and to what you are responding....... i made a STATEMENT OF OPINION. that is HARDLY coming from my feeling superior to anyone - it's just an opinion.
why are you so sensitive - you work for kotaku?

moomoo3192035d ago

Every time u withdraw at the ATM write a story about what kinds of hours those investment bankers are working 😬 for 100s of thousands $$$

Pjuncaj2035d ago

I don't know how I feel about this. I see why one might write the review in this way, but I can't say I agree with it. Although, Kotaku's never really been the place to go for a straightforward reviews. So I suppose that if this was appropriate for this to be anywhere, Kotaku is the place. Regardless, it's well-written and I appreciate that it is different from a typical review.

shinoff21836d ago

They gotta do better on the premium side for sure. Where are any of those jrpgs from the ps1 Era. Come on Sony.

jznrpg6d ago

Most of the Sony JRPGS have been released. Square has a ton that could be ported over but they would need Squares involvement.

VenomUK6d ago

Crime Boss! I know it hasn't reviewed well but I love the eighties action movie vibe of the trailer but didn't want to risk any money on it so this is a great way for me to play it.

Exvalos6d ago

I don't know why Sony is not getting some of the legendary ps1 games from square like parasite eve, xenogears, brave fencer musashi

outsider16246d ago

Looking at this list, i gotta ask what is even the point of premium?

raWfodog6d ago

I'm good with just my PS+ Essential

GamerRN6d ago

I have premium, and I'm also wondering why I have it

Xeofate6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

I think there are a ton of good games on Premium, and don't sleep on the movie collection if you like 90's and 2000's movies, the selection is stacked with classics and gets updated pretty regularly.

Abnor_Mal6d ago

G-Police is a game I have fond memories of and will definitely download to replay. I remember controlling your helicopter was a bit difficult and would make my hand cramp having to press all the shoulder buttons to go up and down and I think yaw left and right.

The next game they should add to Classics is Colony Wars, and I wouldn’t mind replaying Nightmare Creatures. I’d also like to replay Black, PSI Ope: The Mindgate Conspiracy.

Redgrave6d ago

Nightmare Creatures, Deathtrap Dungeon, Urban Chaos

TheColbertinator6d ago

Colony Wars, G-Police, Black and PsiOps were all amazing games. Such creative games from a golden age.

DefenderOfDoom25d ago

I would love to play Black again on a higher difficult setting . Black was so fun to play!

MrBaskerville6d ago

G-Police is nice. But might be among the hardest games I've ever played.

Bathyj6d ago

G Police.
I almost want to upgrade for that.

But let's face it, there's no way the game has held up.

MrBaskerville6d ago (Edited 6d ago )

You can just buy it, you don't need premium.

And it's still good, but there's a couple of early missions that are extremely tough. But they don't really make games like this anymore.

DarXyde6d ago

2Xtreme was the first game I ever bought for PS Plus (I still have the PS1 version somewhere).

Game is awful, but it's stupid fun. Like Thrasher: Skate and Destroy.

Man.... Premium has been a massive letdown but this is the only month they don't have a single thing for me. Oh well. I've gotten my money's worth so far and still need to finish up Rebirth and Rise of the Ronin then I'll hop back in to Relink and Helldivers after that.

hiroyukisanada5d ago

I should clarify that I was referring to the Classics catalog, in particular. Only 1 PS1 game I've loved is the Legend of Dragoon and the Tekken/Soul Caliburs on PSP

Petebloodyonion6d ago

RDR2 is a win for Sony and Crime boss is a good fit to help promote a struggling game
but we're far from what was removed this month (including Horizon Zero Dawn)
https://www.pushsquare.com/...

crazyCoconuts6d ago

Yeah I was hoping burning shores would have been added now that it's a year old vs. the base game being removed.
I wouldn't be surprised if both MS and PS continue to either walk back the quality of games in the sub services or increase the price, since it's now clearer to them how cannibalistic these services are

isarai6d ago

The game deserves to struggle, it's garbage

Petebloodyonion6d ago

Indeed it's bad but it does offer incredible Hollywood star power so for free it might draw a crowd while giving a boost to this game.
Just remember Fallout 76 was the biggest turd and yet there are now tons of ppl playing it.

shinoff21835d ago

When I seen video on this game I thought Holy sht this is gonna be awesome. Then the footage continued and I seen what type of game it was going for. Was so disappointed. Would've loved a gta style game not from Rockstar, like we had back in the day some studios trying. I'm all about being different but a little gta clone idea been cool with.

Yui_Suzumiya5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

To be fair, I'd play Crime Boss before GTA any day. I mean I have no interest in either but just for the celebs I'd pick Crime Boss, lol

JL29306d ago

How is a 6 year old game a win for anything? Anyone who cares has already played it.

Petebloodyonion6d ago

Simply because ppl do play it!
As much as I don't like it GTA V always managed a boost of ppl when it was offered on Game Pass or PS+.
NOW RDR 2 was never offered on a subscription service.
Again the point isn't about will hardcore gamers play the game because we already played it. it's about having a huge star power game never offered on service that will make casual ppl subscribe to it.

MrBaskerville6d ago

You are aware that new people are born every day? All the 5 year olds probably didn't play it when it released.

But I guess you played every game ever released, which is quite impressive.

JL29305d ago Show
seanpitt236d ago

A 6 years old game is a win? Yes it's a masterpiece but I am sure most of hardcore gamers have already played it! I doubt it would be shifting ps plus extra subs if there was a native ps5 version or 60fps option then maybe

6 Games That Genuinely Deserve A Current-Gen Upgrade

Games such as Mad Max, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Batman: Arkham Knight desperately deserve a modern-day revisit.

thorstein34d ago

Mad Max is underrated. Such a fun game.

Cacabunga33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

RDR2 still looks astounding on PS4 Pro. i cannot imagine how it could look with a next gen upgrade.

JonTheGod33d ago (Edited 33d ago )

Probably not very different.

No idea why this article is highlighting recent beautiful graphically-advanced games and saying they need current gen makeovers. They already look better than most new releases; just compare Arkham Knight and Suicide Squad!

exputers33d ago

I see what you did there.

Yi-Long33d ago

It's obviously never gonna happen since Sony killed the game and studio, but Driveclub. Even in its current state, 10 years after release, it still puts many competitors to shame ...

Demetrius33d ago

I'm not into racing games but yeah I even looked at gameplay of that sometimes

redrum065d ago

It's a shame they cancelled the game. Definitely the best racing game I've ever played on Playstation. Just got GT7, but it feels so slow and less arcade-y, which is to be expected of a sim racer of course, that I just enjoy it less.
Driveclub also graphically looked insanely good for its time. I wonder what a Driveclub 2 would look like for the PS5.

Demetrius33d ago

Mad max ikr! Far cry primal, it amuses me how ubisoft just left ac unity hanging, sadly most of the good staff left from rocksteady while being forced to make that abomination smh
