Were we too harsh on the blue hedgehog?
Sonic the Hedgehog is turning 30 years old, and at this late stage in the character's life, it might be time to give up on that precious 3rd dimension.
Or maybe people should let Sonic evolve past 2D sprites. Stop holding the series back because you're nostalgic for the 90s.
Naw Sonic Unleashed had some amazing day time stages, Sonic Generations modern sonic was fantastic. Forces problem was lazy stages that took 2 seconds to beat and barely any skill past holding square. As long as they do it right modern sonic is fantastic.
2D sonic is great and mania is too. But sonic 4 ep1 was mehh, EP 2 was good though. But I'd play day time unleashed over it every time
I like both 2D and 3D sonic games. The original series, Generations, Mania (for 2D) and then of course Adventures, colors and Lost World (for 3D).
Or just literally steal what fans have been making, seriously there's like 4 fan made sonic games out there that play better than anything team sonic has made in years
"A few years ago, leading up to Sega’s latest mainline Sonic The Hedgehog title, the company was confident it wasn’t going to disappoint fans with the game that would later be announced as Sonic Forces. The company even went as far to apologize for the lack of quality control with its recent Sonic titles. Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric sits at a 32/100 on Metacritic, and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal is currently at a 47. Needless to say, they disappointed fans across the globe. Unfortunately, Sonic Forces didn’t raise the bar much higher" -- Nintendo Enthusiast
I'm shocked that Sega haven't cashed in on Chao's. There is so much they could do with them with. Sonic Adventure 1 and especially 2 had so much replayability because of Chao World. If Sega made a modern Chao World it could be brilliant. It's crazy that they ditched it just as it was getting good.
As for Sonic Adventure 3.....well, it's the Sonic game I want more than any other. The thing I worry about most is the direction the stories have taken in recent Sonic games. They are less gritty and more child friendly, I don't think that style suits Sonic and especially the Sonic Adventure series.
At this point Sega needs to wake up and realize what made the adventure titles do great. They need to go back instead of going forward. I haven’t played a good Sonic game since generations and that was only good because it was remade stages from past games.
I don't really have faith in 3D Sonic games anymore. It blew my mind that Sonic Forces, which was suppose to be a return to greatness similar to Sonic Generations failed to meet my expectations that was pretty standard. After that, I just lost faith in the 3D sonic games. They haven't been good in forever and I don't like that is likely to happen again. All the 3D Sonic games that released after Generations were mediocre for the most part.
Sonic Mania Plus gives players another reason to return to the retro world of Sonic the Hedgehog. But what about Modern Sonic? Sonic Forces did disappoint a lot of fans but that doesn't mean the modern version of SEGA's mascot didn't have some incredible adventures for players to enjoy. Here are the top 5 modern Sonic games.
I really liked what Bioware did with Sonic Chronicles. It was a really cool (Mario-like) RPG. I think Sonic can work very well outside of the A -> B Runner Platformer. I would like to see them sit down and figure out what Sonic needs. I think the game series could do well getting the Mario Oddyssey treatment of opening it up and doing some new things, but keeping mementos of the glory days in there.
Sonic Unleashed had the potential to be my favourite Sonic game, the Day Time stages were brilliant. No Sonic game since has had stages as good as those. But the Werehog stages really damaged this game, they weren't even fun, just slow and laborious. If it wasn't for those stages, that game would make my top 3 probably, but because they exist, the game doesn't even make my top 5.
My top 5 is hard to choose because it changes a lot. But my favourite is Sonic Adventure 2. It's one of my all time favourite games. I spent more time on that game than I did any other on the Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure, Heroes, Generations, Colours and Shuffle (unpopular choice, but I loved it) would take up the other spaces.
sonic adventure 1,2 and heroes i only consider as great modern sonic cause they were fully 3d platform, bit of puzzle to solve and special stages. and they didnt have silly gimmicks like shitty 2d section, horrible 2d sonic(especially physics), werehog and especially the boost.
i mean, it wasn't that great lol and has aged terribly.
I loved everything about this game......well, all but one thing, and it's not hard to guess what I am talking about XD
I used to really struggle to get all A's on Sonic's levels. I just didn't know how to beat those times, until I learned that spin dash spamming was the way to go.
