New update for Wolfenstein II Switch version removes Swastikas from game

Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus update 1.2 removes Swastika symbol from the game.

UCForce2026d ago (Edited 2026d ago )

Well, that was awkward.

Eonjay2026d ago

Well Nintendo has the right to ask for what they want on their platform and customers have the ability to purchase the game on a different platform if they believe in Swastikas so no one is really harmed here. I know some people are gonna claim that Swastikas are the reason for the game and that it has no value without the symbols... and for you guys the bigger question is do you feel bad killing Nazis? They are the one wearing the Swastikas you worship so Nintendo may not be your enemy here. The game's creator is the one effing with your beliefs lol. Rage now.

CaptainObvious8782026d ago

So being anti-censorship equates to swastika worshipping...

Alrighty.

Nyxus2026d ago

... what? This comment doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

UCForce2026d ago

What the heck was that ?

AnubisG2026d ago (Edited 2026d ago )

🤔 so, a game based on WWII and has Nazis is your enemy removes swastikas and if people say anything they are swastika worshiping nazis? Nice logic there fella. Why don't we remove nazis altogether than? How about guns also? We can have a water gun to shoot flowers so they bloom and grow..... but maybe the water gun is too much nazi for you so maybe just a glass we have water in than?🤣

Eonjay2026d ago

@CaptainObvious878

You have to understand, you have to have the right to chose what you want on your platform and when you lose that right, you lose free speech. In just the same way that Sony, for example, can choose NOT to censor something. It is still free speech because they own the platform. Nintendo doesn't have to have something simply because Sony does.

A simple way of thinking about it is N4G. When you post a story, you can't put lewd images in you description. Is that N4G censoring us? No. NewsBoiler has the right to define what can be on its network. It is literally their right.

I call them worshipers because they feel that their desire to see something circumvents someones right to not have it. They absolutely do not understand where their world end an where someone else's begins. This is the difference between saying 'I would like more female characters in games' and 'developers must put more women in games'. Some worship their ideas so hard that they completely forget that forcing someone to include something is the SAME thing as censorship effectively.

darthv722026d ago

Well... what was that CoD game that had Kevin Spacey in it? I think there was a patch to remove him after allegations of improper activity. Yet if you never update the game... you get to keep him.

So for people wanting to keep this game original, just dont update it.

Eonjay2026d ago

@darthv72

This. Someone who gets it. Someone who understands where the responsibility lies.

Dragonscale2026d ago

Its not about believing in swastilkas and just because you disagree with this doesn't make you a fascist fgs. Would you feel the same way if it was communists you were killing and they removed the hammer n sickle? Considering wolfenstein is an alternative timeline where the nazi's won, a communist alternative would also be possible and would be just as bad an outcome and probably worse. Its censorship plain and simple and is ridiculous tbh.

Skull5212026d ago

This is why third party has abandoned Nintendo in the first place

rainslacker2026d ago

Sure. One has the right to not buy the game if they don't agree.

But you know, this is an update which affects those that may have already brought the game, since it releasereleased about 4-5 months ago.

Are refunds issued for those that don't believe in censorship? Somehow I doubt either the publisher, or Nintendo are going to do that. They'd put the swastikas back in before they part with their money.

Also...how is being against censorship somehow akin to being a Nazi or swastika worshiper. Logic would dictate that the two things are polar opposites of one another.

thejigisup2026d ago

It kinda changes the games premise. Just seems rather strange getting a game onto a console about killing Nazis, then remove the thing that identifies them as Nazis.

Muzikguy2026d ago (Edited 2026d ago )

I don’t follow your logic here. It shouldn’t be a case of “well it’s available elsewhere so do that if you want” but more so a rewriting of history. There should be NO reason those were removed. If people had the problem in the first place then don’t play the game at all, period. We are getting to a point where where catering to everyone is becoming a norm and it’s disgusting. Of all the things getting censored these days history should NEVER be one of them

Edit:

Not updating isn’t the answer. Updates are needed for obvious reasons and to keep the game running smooth. Why should anyone sacrifice a good running game just to keep the symbols in? Not logical

Realms2026d ago

Nah it's just Nintendo being Nintendo I still remember the Mortal Kombat blood fiasco IMO it's not Nintendo's job to censor third party developed games. Just my two cents.

Eonjay2026d ago

I hear you guys. I think your opinions are valid. But at the same time I think Nintendo has the right to do what they want with their platform. And there is always more to the story. For example for Nintendo to go back and change the game (or request it) means that they probably got complaints already. They have a 'family friendly' image that just wont quit.

UnHoly_One2026d ago

This change is probably supported by the same people that think it's appropriate to tear down civil war statues.

Eonjay2026d ago

@UnHoly_One

Yeah just no. You are really far off base here. Not even in the same world really.

Realms2026d ago

@ Eonjay

The game is clearly marked as M so why does Nintendo have to inteerseed on behalf of anyone, even if what you are saying is true and they have received complaints it is up to parents to keep track of what their children have access to not Nintendo's. If Nintendo's problem is their brand being associated with Wolfstein nazi's, swastikas and such then they should remove the game from their catalog not try to censor the game.

CorndogBurglar2026d ago

"They have a 'family friendly' image that just wont quit."

We're talking about a violent, M Rated game that is over the top with gore, close combat kills, and many other very adult themes and images.

Removing the Swastika has nothing to do with keeping a "family friendly" image.

rainslacker2026d ago

" For example for Nintendo to go back and change the game (or request it) means that they probably got complaints already. They have a 'family friendly' image that just wont quit."

So, because some people complained they should censor it? Should we apply that to Xenoblade 2 character design? Bayonetta 2 or 3's rather suggestive attire and sexual innuendo? Being able to see up 2B's skirt if you get the camera just right? Beating up hookers in GTA, or just doing anything in GTA in general? Jumping on turtles in Mario? How about that Senran Kaguri game that Sony decided to needed to be censored?

We all know that people complain about everything, and i can't see any logical reason why the representation of Swastikas in a game where it isn't glorified would cause any more controversy than many other things that exist in any number of games. Why not just remove Nazi's altogether? If someone is offended by the Swastika, I'd assume they're just as adverse to Nazi's. The game's premise is based on if the Nazi's had won. Removing the swastika doesn't remove the context of the game, just makes it OK for people who are offended by the imagery to play it, pr worse, placate people who aren't playing it. But I would posit that someone should be offended by the imagery, and recognize the symbol in context, instead of being offended as if the symbol is being used as being a subversive way to promote Nazism.

Removing the things that are objectionable from history does not remove history. It only diminishes the impact that it has on people, and there are some things which shouldn't be changed for the sake of a few that may be offended.

I don't know how many holocaust survivors are still alive today, but I would say to them if they insisted it be removed, that things like this are reminding people what they had to go through, the evil that can exist within mankind, and that kind of thing should never be forgotten. There are very few people who look at it as a good thing, and while they may be uncomfortable with it, it's important for people to remember. I would never encourage it's use as a symbol for a group of people to rally around to spread hate, but as a reminder of our past, I take no offense when it isn't glorified as a good thing.

Nintendo, or any console maker has the right to do these things on their system. Sony did it recently with a couple of anime games which they felt were crossing the line. I'm not really on board with that because I don't agree with censorship.

gangsta_red2026d ago (Edited 2026d ago )

Wow, when you have UCForce asking "what was that?", then you know you have to come back and further explain!

Mithan2026d ago

Your opinion is stupid. Wanting to stay straight to the original game, doesn't mean people feel bad for nazis.

2025d ago
ScootaKuH2025d ago

Do I feel bad killing Nazis?

No I don't because... it's just a game and I'm not actually killing anyone

bigmalky2025d ago

Never go full Ben Stiller...

Christopher2024d ago

***so, a game based on WWII and has Nazis is your enemy***

Just to note, the series is not based on WW2. It's based on a fictional timeline post-WW2 where the Nazis won. Anything after "the Nazis won" is not based on anything but the minds of those who wrote them in this fictional universe.

UCForce2026d ago

@DJK1NG_Gaming Then why PS4 and Xbox One version still have Swastikas ? Like I said, if Nintendo wasn’t involved it, Bethesda would have to remove it all the console versions.

Christopher2024d ago (Edited 2024d ago )

Eh, it's standard in Germany.

warriorcase2026d ago

Wounder what would happen if they had a 'Man in the high castle' esk sequel that had the Japanese forces working with the Nazis to finish of the Allies. Now that would be awkward.

Literal_Cringe2025d ago

Yup, because you didn't read it.

DarXyde2025d ago

.... it's only removed in the German version of the game.

Did anyone read the article?

Neonridr2026d ago

would have been nice just to have an option in the menu instead of forcing us to have it removed.

Fist4achin2026d ago

You are cooking with gas there! I feel like history is being rewritten and going to be a lot kinder than what it actually was. I don't like this whole PC to change everything.

Weeblordbad2026d ago

History is being rewritten in an alternate reality? My god.

rainslacker2026d ago

I think that people that play this game probably aren't any less offended by Nazi's in general. Or at least what Nazi's represent. It seems silly to remove the symbol that represented the thing that was actually offensive, but leave that thing that was actually offensive in tact.

Weeblordbad2026d ago

This seems like by far the best option.

Profchaos2026d ago

It's only in Germany that it's being applied purely to follow legal regulatory standards

iggsta3o52025d ago

While I think your idea is great I also think your argument as to what is force is incorrect. It's their IP meaning they are not using force to remove it. Using force would require that the property belong to someone else besides them

Neonridr2025d ago

yeah sorry, poor choice of wording.

playnice2026d ago

I thought it had some performance improvements... Now I don't want to update anymore!

michellelynn09762026d ago

Who knows. Let's wait and find out.

michellelynn09762026d ago

We don't know if Nintendo had this removed. Let's wait to see if they did.

Shiken2026d ago

If the other versions still have them, who else could it have been?

"Wolfenstein is set in a world where generic germans won WW2 lead by no-mustache wearing Adam Heinrich ..."

TekoIie2025d ago

Nah it's clear why this has happened now that the article has been updated:

"UPDATE: It seems Swastika removal only occurred in German version of the Wolfenstein II."

They're complying with German law. But the law is definitely pathetic.

Sgt_Slaughter2026d ago

Wolfenstein had a leg up on all other WWII-era games because it actually decided to have some balls and keep in the Nazi-related symbols and such, but why the sudden removal? I doubt Nintendo had a say in it, considering games like DOOM and L.A. Noire exist on the platform and are as M-Rated as it gets.

Parasyte2026d ago

Game's rating doesn't matter. It is the imagery that concerns Nintendo. As far as I know, they haven't pushed this update on any other platform.

rainslacker2026d ago

I don't really like the idea of retroactive compliance standards. If the game met compliance when it released, it should be left alone. Unfortunately, each update has to meet the current compliance standards, and this is true of all consoles. however, its rare that you see content have to be specifically changed in older games from any console maker. Retroactive standards make more sense for things that may not involve content, but content should be left alone.

NerdBurglars2025d ago

They had to remove them on all platforms for the German release. Not sure the exact reason but I am guessing due to the historical significance of the symbol, there are legal issues with using it in German media.

Jinger2026d ago

It's definitely only a Nintendo thing since the other platforms don't have it removed.

Profchaos2026d ago

It's only a Germany thing

UCForce2026d ago

Dude, It was requested by Nintendo. Look the article again.

michellelynn09762026d ago

The reason behind this removal might be a request from Nintendo. You can see the before and after patch comparison below.

^From the article. May, meaning they are only guessing. Let's see what happens. They could have, but until we get the official word, no one knows.

UCForce2026d ago

@michellelynn0976 “Might” But why PS4 and Xbox One version have Swastikas ? If this wasn’t request by Nintendo, Bethesda would have remove the swastikas all console versions.

MasterChief36242026d ago

What I'm wondering is why did it take them this long to do it? It's been several month's since the game's release on Switch. Surely, Nintendo knew of the imagery already, so why the sudden decision?

warriorcase2026d ago

"I doubt Nintendo had a say in it"
Well, as far as we know it is only the Nintendo version censoring it so it does very much look like it is Nintendo banning it. Nintendo is, for the most part, a family friendly brand so that could be one reason.

Profchaos2026d ago

Cod WW2 had it throughout the campaign

RememberThe3572025d ago

First, showing swastikas in a game doesn't make it better. Second, we all know why it's been removed; Nintendo got some calls from some angery moms and we all know Nintendo does what angry mom's want them to do. Swastikas are offensive so we shouldn't be surprised when people get offended. At the end of the day the game is still great and is still about poppin Nazis.

Riders republic. Nice. I never bought it but played beta twice. Good fun openworld game.

BigBosss393d ago

I have 3 other mates who like playing multiplayer games. Is this something we will all enjoy together?

Astrokis393d ago

It’s a really fun game when there’s a lot of people on but the player base dropped a lot compared to launch. This should help increase the amount online drastically.

It’s definitely a - I want to chill with my friends type of game so definitely check it out! Also it’s a huge improvement over Steep

MaximusPrime_393d ago

Sounds good. Also, Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC coming a day after. I'll be more likely spending time on that DLC first. But will join when free.

closed_account393d ago (Edited 393d ago )

Riders Republic is a ton of fun and one of the best things Ubisoft has done in recent years IMO.

The music and acting are obnoxious, which I just turn down... but it's so much just freeriding mountain bikes or other stuff across the mountains. I haven't played w friends, but I imagine it would be a ton of fun in MP. Very underrated game!

SlothLordPootus393d ago

I kept getting caught up in other games so I never got around to buying Doom Eternal. If it's good I'll still buy it so i can keep it. The reboot was awesome, i think i played through it about 5 times, and platinumed it.

closed_account392d ago

Same here, I've had Doom Eternal on my wishlist for a long time. I'm definitely jumping in considering the free PS5 upgrade they released.

Storm23392d ago

It is a lot of fun. First FPS in a while that has really grabbed me. And I love FPS games. C’mon Killzone/Resistance series remasters/remakes/sequels…anyt hing.

DefenderOfDoom2392d ago

I agree , Sony has not produced a single player FPS campaign in about 8 years. I already played DOOM Eternal which was awesome.

FallenAngel1984393d ago

A whole lotta Bethesda titles in this lineup

Sackboy also got included as well despite already being as Essential title

crazyCoconuts393d ago

Regarding sackboy, you're right... That's confusing. At least wait until it's not in essential, as it's impossible to have extra without essential.

Welshy393d ago (Edited 393d ago )

Damned if you do and damned if you don't with that one I think. When a former monthly free game goes into the subscription catalog at a later date it also gets criticism, so may as well just add it straight away for people who don't claim it going forward I guess.

Profchaos392d ago

Hopefully the claim on the game counts as a essentials claim so when the game leaves the catalogue it doesn't leave the players library.

I found a similar situation frustrating I played fallout 76 when it was introduced as a premium game a month or so later it was a essentials game and I could not repurchase it so I'll lose the game when it leaves the Library

crazyCoconuts393d ago

Spiderman is in the titles leaving Extra in May. Guess 1st party titles aren't guaranteed to stay

Welshy393d ago

That's just the way of subscription services in general, titles come and go, but I'm sure it'll be back. Maybe it's a Quantum Break deal where it's just a license refresh?

It's one of the reasons I fear a subscription/digital only future. I don't want the platforms telling me what I can and can't play at any given time and waiting of tenterhooks for games I actually want to be available.

closed_account393d ago

Oh boy, that's making me want to jump back into Returnal! Not that I'd mind buying the game, love it.

EvertonFC393d ago

Great Month, own most of them but looking fwd to trying monstor boy, nice sto have EW in my collection now and some wolfeinstein.
