Far Cry II has 3.5 gb install on the Ps3

The Vgtilt has finally gotten our copy of the game and we are excited to play it, but the install is off putting.

LastDance5667d ago (Edited 5667d ago )

"This means if you buy Saints Row 2, bio Shock, Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 you're going to be out 17gb of space on your hdd's"

Can sony do something??..im sick of my games screen tearing, and installs and games runnning megearly. I dont care WHO'S fault it is, it doesnt change the fact that this is happening.

why can xbox360 - an incredibly defective machine - run these games WITHOUT installs, and in some cases run them smoother.

i only own a ps3. And this is crap.

Silogon5667d ago (Edited 5667d ago )

Sony needs to do something about these installs. We are installing over half the game onto our PS3's if they are multiplatform games, and In some instances we are even installing more than half the game.

As I point out, it doesn't affect me much right now (320gb owner) but anyone buying these 40gb systems is in a serious fix.

legendkilla5667d ago

it's good to know how much this will take up on my HDD. Im starting to run out of room on my 60gb PS3..I think its time for a hard drive upgrade!

Aclay5667d ago

@ Silogon,

I don't think that Sony even produces the 40GB PS3's anymore. Now the 80GB PS3's are standard across almost all major territories now. I'm not sure if Australia has gotten the 80GB PS3's yet, but most of Europe has them and Japan will be getting them very soon too.

Sony did the right thing by chopping the 40GB models and making the 80GB PS3's the new standard because they probably realized that a lot of games were requiring installs and they wanted to give people more space to download content from the PSN video store. 40GB PS3's have been off shelves in the United States for a few months now.

Peter Griffin5667d ago

devs are starting to abuse this feature

whothedog5667d ago

Um does everyone forget that there is a delete button(yes I understand that you play more the one game at a time, but thats why they have big hdds), PLUS.....

I read awhile ago that the PS3 version was running smoother than on the 360 version, but obviously the PC is probably the smoothest. So..... yeahhhhh

TheIneffableBob5667d ago (Edited 5667d ago )

The PS3 install is bigger than the entire PC version (3.16 GB). :3

Genesis55667d ago (Edited 5667d ago )

What are you playing all 4 games at once? Play the game and then delete the install. How is that so hard?

I don't know am I the only one that likes to play a game and finish it, then mess around with it a little bit afterward. Then move on to the next game.

I know when I start to many games at once some don't get finished. Then I feel like I didn't get my moneys worth from the game.

mikeslemonade5667d ago

There are like 5 other FPS games I would rather play over Far Cry 2 that are coming out this fall.

5667d ago
hokis4ever5667d ago

I understand your point, but they have been selling the 40 gig for almost a year now. Are you saying that install base does not matter?

The question that should be asked is "why are these installs necessary, if it is not on the 360". Simple question that no one seems to be able to answer...

I have a 60 gigger... With Warhawk, R&C quest for Booty and a number of other online only games installed and I'm running out of space. Hard drives are cheap, but i shouldn't need to upgrade, just to play a Disc based game.

y0haN5667d ago

I'm gonna keep the number of games for PS3 I get to a minimum.. all these installs are a joke.

bomboclaat_gamer5667d ago

i feel the PS3 has a big problem that the devs and sony dont want u to know. cuz most of the ps3 games a requiring installs. maybe the blueray drive is butt ugly slow

cherrypie5667d ago

The reason for the installs has been well known, for a very long time.

If you havent, read this article;

http://multiplayerblog.mtv....

"Tired of mandatory hard drive installs on PlayStation 3? Blame Blu-ray... By nature, the outer and inner parts of a disc move at different speeds while a disc is spinning, regardless of format....While DVD drives can read data at those differing speeds, Blu-ray reads at one speed.

When a publisher asks you to install a game on PS3, it’s because they’re moving some of the disc data to an area of your console that has much faster read access: the hard drive.

...Some developers copy their game’s data on the disc multiple times...

Bethesda Softworks executive producer Todd Howard recently publicly confirmed the duplicated data technique as a strategy on his company’s “Fallout 3.”

The bottom line on the installs is this; BluRay is a movie format, it isnt as fast as DVD (or HD-DVD).

You can thank Sony's MPAA division for mandatory installs and long waits.

nycredude5667d ago

Let's stop with this Sony and the hardware fault. All the freaking people who keeps thinking that it has anything to do with hardware have to get their heads out their ass!! There are plenty of games both exclusive and multiplatform that has great graphics without installs. I'll just name one of each:

Uncharted: STILL the best looking game on console AND not one load screen.

Deadspace: I STILL can't believe EA published this game!!!

Now go find something else to complain about!

jaysquared5667d ago

"There are like 5 other FPS games I would rather play over Far Cry 2 that are coming out this fall. "

And out of those 5 I bet you at least 3 of them will have installs!

ChrisGTR15666d ago

thats what you get for just going by the name and not the product. ps3 just dosent live up to the playstation brand. honestlty, its a console that sega would make. ps3 just sucks no matter which way you look at it. no games, high price and on top of that its still the inferrior console of the 2, all ports are better on 360 and so is the online. the only place the ps3 leads 360 in is reliability. but i wouldnt be so shure cause it too has the YLOD and blueray drive malfunctions. i see people complaining about them all the time in the ps3 forums.

deeznuts5666d ago

I have an original 20 gb and still haven't upgraded yet. I delete the install after I'm done playing.

I've been a computer guy for over a decade. If I ever run out of space I'll buy a damn HDD. I just haven't needed it yet. I have an elite 120gb 360 and have yet to put anything on it either.

Fox015666d ago (Edited 5666d ago )

PS3 + headset + HDD + HD cable + delays, lies and BS... you'll have to be really crazy to buy a PS3 over a 360.
So, basically games in PS3 require from 3-7GB of saving space, which is just insane.

deeznuts5666d ago

I play my PS3 a lot more than I do my 360. Many of the 360's heavy hitters I just haven't found fun. You'd have to be crazy to call someone crazy because they prefer one or the other console's games.

I bought a 360 because I didn't want to miss any good games. But I tried Halo 3, Crackdown, Saints Row 1, Kameo etc., and just didn't like them. Loved Gears and Mass Effect though (even though the stuttering frustrated me). I will continue to play each and every "good" 360 game. But after owning both, I can say, I prefer my ps3.

Multiplants get play on my PS3 as well. But only because it's quieter. Far Cry II will be on my PS3. This time because my stupid play and charge just died after two recharges. Summofa ...

Alex_Mexico5666d ago

Ok hold your horses. What headset I need to buy? Wait a minute, my bluetooth hands free that came with my cellphone works on my PS3! Problem solved!
HD Cable? ok I'll give you that. But that still costs less than the $50 annual you pay for Live.
Why you need to be crazy to buy a PS3 over a 360? How about reliablity? Brand loyalty? Being the successor the the world's most popular console ever made? How about MGS4? LBP? Resistance 2? Killzone 2? FFXIII Versus? God of War 3? I'm not what you'd call crazy... Im just more of a Sony guy than a MS guy (not much interest in Halo and Fable allthough Gears does looks tempting).

felidae5666d ago

yeah man, i feel the same.

looks like only exclusives run good on the ps3. Bioshock runs like **** on the ps3. very sad.

psnDevistator3565666d ago

The PC version is 3.16 GB.

Love my ps3 but if its out for pc, I'm going for that.

Graphics Whore.

Anyway have you tried out the editor?

Its Amazing!!!

Check out the Level I Made, Oh sorry for the poor quality.

Quickedie5666d ago

Still sometimes I wish there was the OPTION(!) to install games to HD on my XBox, too. It would speed-up loading times, even though they aren't so bad. But the main reason for me is that it would cause the DVD-drive to get less on my nerves, its freaking loud.
But then we should have the "choice" to use our own harddrives, not the ridiculously expensive ones from MS.
Look at the PC. From a technical perspective its no problem to play every game directly from disk. Still developers choose to use the HD. If games could be installed to the XBox HD, it would reduce [texture] pop-ups in pretty much any game (GTA IV for instance).

BluRay may be poorly suited for gaming, at least PS3 uses have a REAL choice to upgrade their HD.

Vip3r5666d ago

Fallout 3 doesn't have a mandatory install if I remember correctly.

Man_of_the_year5666d ago

If uncharted has the best graphics on any console to date - why was it not even nominated for an award???

Lifendz5666d ago

but if you can spare the cost of a new game, you can buy an HDD that will make installs a worry of the past. I did and now I have more space than I know what to do with. I'm looking for software so I can convert DVDs into MP4 format so I can get some of my fav movies on the PS3. The installs have got to be annoying for those of you with a 20 gib hdd (are there any of you out there?) or with the 60, but, again, if you can spare the cost of a game then I can't see why you wouldn't upgrade.

f7897905666d ago

Delete the game data when you done with a game! 3.5GB is reasonable considering the game streams and doing this from the hard drive would help prevent loading screens.

Exquisik5666d ago (Edited 5666d ago )

Uncharted was one of the runners-up in IGN Best Graphics Technology Award of 2007, losing to Crysis (which everyone know that it had the best the graphics, that is if you have a well-built PC to play the game in its maximum capabilities).

That still does not leave out the fact that Uncharted runs without any installation and loading.

Good.Less loading times and smooth framerate make the PS3 version superior.PS3 wins once again and again and again.

Sorry xbots:(

Lelouch V Brit5667d ago (Edited 5667d ago )

"Good.Less loading times" I agree this part but the rest noooooooo, "Smooth framerate make the PS3 Version" Did you say Bioshock, Fallout 3? I love my PS3, but We have to accept the true, developers don't care about PS3.

GiantEnemyLobster5667d ago

Every game on Xbox 360 has faster loading times even after the PS3 install. Look at Grand theft auto 4.

Face it, the PS3 fails miserably as usual.

PS3rd the flop5667d ago

damage control, forced installs because blu ray is slow.ps3 sucks and get the inferior version again, have to buy a hdd because of FORCED installs.

JasonPC360PS3Wii5666d ago

Whats F-ed is when your hard drive is full and you want to play an older game, you have to uninstall, then install the old one again. Install times range from 20-45min I wonder how many times I can play through a game switching disc before it's even with that 20-45min. I could probably switch disc a 1000 times before it reaches that time.

LOL not only did you have to wait 6 months for the PS3 to release, but you have to wait for games, rumble, ports, firmware updates, home, delay after delay, then you have to wait for install.

LOL and you wonder why it's called "Waitstation 3" and whats F-ed even more is that it makes little to zero difference. The Playstation brand is doomed, I'll be looking forward to renting your games for the next Xbox.

Sony... from king to sh!t, but at least they got that Blu-ray out for a couple years.

Want to know why you need to install your games? Ahhh! forget it, if I told you, you would spin and jump on the denial boat.

heyheyhey5666d ago

lol @ Jason

the ONLY, i repeat ONLY game that has an install time above 20 mins is DMC4... and it only goes 1 minute above the 20 min mark

45 mins??? what are you smoking?

The Matrix5666d ago

I bought it yesterday and while the case says 3.5 GB it only ends up being slightly under 3000 MBs including the game saves and the 6 bonus missions.

ELite_Ghost5666d ago

@ retarded lobster
LMAO Where did u read that GTA4 has faster loading times than ps3??????????
YOU'RE SO DUMB, 360 HAS CRAPPIER GRAPHICS, FRAMERATE, NO FULL SCREEN TV THINGIE, AND 2X THE LOADING TIME, WHICH WOULD BE AROUND 5 SECONDS!!
IT'S PPL LIKE YOU THAT MAKE PPL LIKE ME HATE 360 OWNERS !!

I'm more angry as to why the installs and the game doesn't improve. I rather a game install to help the game run better and smoother than a game that doesn't install. I think Sony drop the ball this gen, Socom is halfazz and thankyou sony for ruining it. I got rid of my 360 because it suck and now Socom was the biggest disappointment to me this gen. Oh well let's see what RE2 and killzone2 have to offer..

aiphanes5667d ago

But they will fix Socom...its only server issues...and most have been fixed..

R2 rules over Socom Confrontation right now....heck even COD4...

Erotic Sheep5667d ago

I recieved this game today.. yes it has a 3,5 GB install but OMFG it's only 3 minutes installing or so :\ You can take a quick crap meanwhile or look at the FarCry 2 map that came with the package.

Btw the install option DOES work. Loading times are pretty damn quick and you can drive around the entire place without any loading.

Xi5667d ago

Is actually a rumored socom title, the name MAG was just a placeholder as the game was still partly in that development phase.

So I too hope that the game will be a redeemer to the franchise.

UltimateIdiot9115667d ago

Socom Confrontation is not made by Zipper. The PS3 socom is made by Slant Six Games. I'm only going to get Socom Confrontation when I feel like getting the bluetooth otherwise I'm skipping this title.

Skynetone5667d ago

but i did just upgrade to a 160 gig hd

40 gig owners will be forced to upgrade soon {unless they dont mind deleting alot}

Man_of_the_year5666d ago

Its not the time of the installs people are upset about - its the size of the installs..lets say you are taking that quick crap...now if it was a quick small crap and flushed away with 1 push of the button then you wouldn't have that much of an issue - now if you were taking a quick crap and it filled the whole bowl and started to over flow because your bowl is too small for that quick crap you are taking - then i think at that point you wouldn't be too happy now would ya...

wow and I care why? I have a 320gb HDD I think I will manage. BTW if you haven't upgraded by now then get on it.

Silogon5667d ago

Yeah, sure thing... Oh, wait I already did; As I've stated 3 times now. This is also very helpful for people who want the game and don't know what they are walking into. I posted this cause some people might not be as fortunate as me and you... Some people might be fighting for space and this is a good heads up.

I'm sorry enough people disagree and or hate the very mention of my name, but I posted this in good faith.

Poirot95667d ago

And thanks, I'm actually intending to get this game and it's good to know how big the install is. I have a 60 gigger that's getting a bit full with movies and stuff.

Aclay5667d ago

I didn't know that Far Cry 2 required a PS3 install and this is very good to know, and I do plan on buying it, but I really don't see what's the big deal about an install. I probably would have read about the Far Cry 2 install for the PS3 in the next issue of the Official Playstation Magazine in their review of the game, but I guess it's good to know before hand.

As soon as an article is approved about a PS3 game having an install usually flamewars and fanboy comments start going back and forth on N4G, it's just ridiculous.

I still have my launch 60GB PS3 and will be upgrading to a larger HDD sometime early next year, but I have plenty of space to last me until then.

ultimolu5667d ago

So do I. I have no problems deleting a few things for new games.

GamingSinceForever410d ago (Edited 410d ago )

I recently tried 3 for the first time but the frame rate was a turnoff.

I liked 5 and 6 though.

banger88409d ago

If you have a Series X or S, the Xbox 360 version runs at 60 fps with fps boost. It's a shame the remaster doesn't.

isarai411d ago

2 and 3, pretty much the only ones i really enjoyed. 1 was amazing for the time but aged quite poorly. 4 has the elephant gun, all i can praise from any entry after 3 lol

cooperdnizzle410d ago

Ummmm 3 than stop.

Okay maybe two as well. But yeah probably 3 and then move on.

JEECE410d ago (Edited 410d ago )

Far Cry 2. People constantly rant about games now being too easy, holding your hand, having too many unnecessary RPG-lite leveling features, etc. People specifically complain about open world games being too focused on tons of collectibles and "checkmarks" that just waste time.

Far Cry 2 is an answer to all of those complaints. It was made by Ubisoft before they fell into all the traps discussed above (and before they started inserting towers into their games to defog the map). It has respawning enemies, weapons that degrade, and the collectible diamonds are very useful in the game (which you find in a similar way to the way you find shrines in BOTW with a radar system). The map you have is an in game item you pull out while playing, not a pause menu that is unnecessarily detailed. Also the enemy AI and physics are much better than later entries in the series.

It has a mixed reputation because people at the time said it was too hard, the weapon degradation was annoying, and then respawning enemies were annoying. FC2 came out in 2008, so this was before games like Dark Souls and BOTW had come out and made it cool to like these types of features.

XbladeTeddy409d ago

Far Cry 2, the one with the AI that find you through walls and trees, can one shot you from a mile away and have 100% accuracy? That was frustrating not fun because cheap AI.

JEECE409d ago (Edited 409d ago )

Uhh, I mean, it isn't one of these games where once the enemies have detected you they will magically forget you exist because you walked behind a wall or went into a bush. And yeah the AI isn't stormtrooper level accuracy. Again, these are positives, not negatives to me.

To be fair, I'm really directing this at the people most critical of "Modern Ubisoft" or "Modern Open World" design elements. Like the type of people who fawned all over Elden Ring because it had a clean UI because they are so burnt out by the "checkbox" type of open world design.

If you like those types of games, then a later FC game like 3 and especially 4-5 would be more your style.

SonyStyled457d ago

cthulhucultist456d ago

Killzone 3 was super impressive! I could not believe the graphics back then as I was regularly pausing the game to stand in awe looking at the surroundings! Resistance however did not impress me that much. Heavy rain is also another amazing graphically speaking game. It almost felt next gen

SonyStyled457d ago

They did for their day. I recently played gears judgement with on the 360 and the draw distance was so blurry. The characters up close look great though

JEECE457d ago

Far Cry 2 was awesome. In addition to having demonstrably better physics and AI than later games in the series, it had a lot of design decisions that, criticized at the time, have since been praised in games like BOTW and Dark Souls.

Far Cry 2 where your guns never ever jammed until you got into a gunfight is their best? I disagree.

MIDGETonSTILTS17579d ago

I liked 3 more.

The malaria angle was more annoying than immersive.

And, the enemy AI had too good of eyesight to allow any stealth. They’d spot you a literal half mile away, I hated it.

lonewolf10579d ago

Yeah, some weird mechanics for sure, some did really enjoy it, I certainly didn't.

bloop578d ago (Edited 578d ago )

The map was designed badly and an absolute pain to navigate from what I can remember too. You ended up having to go to the same few places all the time and there was a huge inaccessible area between them that you had to go around.

It definitely had the best physics system of the entire franchise, but a lot of the mechanics took the enjoyment out of it.

LordoftheCritics579d ago

It was fun for its time but a bunch of those systems today won't survive a launch weekend.

Profchaos579d ago

I'd say it was their most ambitious and had the best setting to date next to the original island.

But gameplay wise it was clunky and maybe it was released to early if the teams had modern systems to build it on the game would have been much better less corridors more open and less gaurd outposts that auto regen

Knushwood Butt579d ago

How do you use guns when not in a gunfight? Shooting trees?

lonewolf10578d ago

Yes and you could do that for hours in FC2 with a gun and it wouldn't jam, not hard to grasp is it.

Far Cry 2 may certainly not be the most "fun" game in the series but from a narrative standpoint it definitely is the most interesting of the bunch. FC2 couldn't be further away from the pointless fragfests that the following episodes turned out to be.
