No Man’s Sky NEXT Shows Just How Big of an Influence the Media has over Gamers

No Man’s Sky is a great game. This is an opinion which month ago would cause huge backlash, and multitude of angry people explaining why I am “objectively” wrong. Yet, it seems that this all changed with No Man’s Sky newest update simple titled NEXT. Why is that though? Is No Man’s Sky NEXT really that good? Or is the Xbox One crowd just a more fitted player base? Well… not really.

"No Man’s Sky is a great game"

No Mans Sky was a crap game which became an barely average game.

What's with sudden arse licking of No Mans Sky, people are trying to make out it's better then it actually is. Do people think way back when it first released and it had the uproar many people pulled criticism from their ass and everything was baseless or something? People had legit criticisms of the game...it was disappointing, underwhelming and boring.

MichaelPyre2138d ago

No one is arguing about that. At launch it was not good.

Chaosdreams2137d ago (Edited 2137d ago )

@Foxtrot, I think what we're seeing now is how do reviewers and gamers approach a game that's essentially had an overhaul change from its initial launch. It's a different game at this point, a 2.0 so to speak.

Day 01 of No Man's Sky, was atrocious. It was barren and empty of what was promised, or at least heavily implied. So when I see your anger or distaste for the game, I completely get it.

Since then however Hello Games has been adding large updates, 4 in total now with subsequent patches for any bugs that prop up. In the beginning, most of those angry with them said so, said nothing and/or walked away from the game or kept an eye out. I myself put the game on the shelf. With each major update, I jumped back in to see what was new. Each time I nodded in approval but didn't feel like it was enough. Hello Games didn't either, so they kept working away at it. As each large update released, there would be silence. Hello Games wasn't hyping it up, they weren't feeding on a huge community of fans, they simply worked on their passion project and when content was ready, explained what it was and supplied it to the community, soon after getting back to work on more content.

Why does this matter? Well comparatively speaking, they are a small studio yet put their livelihoods on the notion of continuing to improve a flawed product where as huge publishers like EA with studios such as Bioware, canned (put on ice) a major series such as Mass Effect... I see the reaction and the responsibility and I know Hello Games is a good studio at heart.

Next - truly does feel like a product that if when released on day 01, would've been received well. Does it have everything? No, but it's certainly gotten close. At this point I think it's okay for gamers to say they like No Man's Sky, and that it is a good game. Because in its current form, it is. How does this reflect in review scores? I suppose any journalist who wants to give their new or updated review on the game - should mention any previous comments they might have had.

It's a changing landscape, and No Man's Sky still has a lot in store. They plan to update the game until it feels complete to them. I believe it. To enjoy their product now doesn't imply any arse licking is taking place. It's as basic as it is - judging a game in its current form.

Elwenil2137d ago

The "arse licking" comes in when people still try to defend Murray and his lies when they were documented very well. It's actually pretty funny to see people claim he never lied when all it takes is a quick Google search to make them look like complete fools.

Gatsu2137d ago

It's a fantastic and beautiful exploring game.
Why do you hate it so much?

ScootaKuH2137d ago

I guess you don't like it then?

NMS was never a bad game at all. It was over promised and then underdelivered. I am glad to see the team working heard to try and make amends and bring this title to more people the way it was advertised. I had a ton of fun popping in adn playing a bit, then popping out. I'll jump back into NEXT to see whats new. I am close to the platinum, but they changed the criteria for animal/creature exploration trophies and that made things much harder to achieve. Maybe there will be a good change in their here.

MichaelPyre2138d ago

There are a few good changes. but overall it's sad that just people are noticing how good the game has really gotten since launch. Last two updates added so much things and no one seemed to care.

Vegamyster2137d ago

What can you honestly say that was good about it at launch? It was a full priced title that had hardly any content and bare bones combat and mining mechanics.

uth112138d ago

the number of haters on NMS articles has certainly diminished since this release.

i'm glad it's getting attention again. it is a highly ambitious game and they just couldn't do out justice by the 2016 deadline. But the HG team is as passionate about the game as its fans are. they are determined to make it great

MichaelPyre2138d ago

True, Its quite rare to see in gaming industry. Most companies would just give up and either made a sequel (watch_Dogs 2 situation) or make a new game in more popular genre (Radical Heights situation)

PhantomS422137d ago

That's because unlike the sad desperate minority who are trying to pretend the game is good everyone else moved one and doesn't care. Why would we when games that deliver on the promise the developers made have come out and ran circles around this trash. NEXT once again over promised and only gave a fraction was what was promised at launch. The game is still lifeless and dull. Hello Games are still garbage developers. We tried it laughed and went back to far better games. You can keep playing this contentless game meanwhile everyone else is going to move on to Spider-man, Red Dead, Battlefield V, Yakuza Kiwami 2, Darksiders and keep replaying full content games like God of War, Detroit, GTA Online, Monster Hunter, Octopath Traveler.

JackBNimble2137d ago

I bought the game for $20 on a psn sale, I was bored of it in the first hour and deleted it. But since there has been all these updates I just might redownload it and see what all the fuss is about.

Gh05t2137d ago

I couldn't find the check in table for haters but I wanted to make clear. I am present and NMS is still one of my most hated games of all time.

OB1Biker2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Its indeed an interesting topic. The media has a huge influence. They know it and abuse of it.

MichaelPyre2138d ago

Indeed they do. Shame that gamers more often than not, are not aware of that, and follow what they hear from various media outlets blindly. All these failed overjoyed games are an example of that, so is NMS Next.

2138d ago
Rude-ro2137d ago

Ha! Kind of.. those with money, partnerships, and even own media sites.. they abuse it when it comes to products, consumers and competitors.
From its conception... it was and is the number one mass consumer marketing golden egg.

Srhalo2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

Xbox fans hated it because ti was exclusive now it's on Xbox so they can't hate on it. That's really what changed.

darthv722137d ago

That sort of spite is very common this gen... from both sides.

Gh05t2137d ago (Edited 2137d ago )

It released on PC ergo not an exclusive, as any Sony fan would tell you.

Why Microsoft Putting Black Ops 6 On Game Pass Is The Ultimate Test

By putting Black Ops 6 on Game Pass, Microsoft plans to gauge its growth, pricing, and monetization changes, at the cost of less game sales.

rlow118h ago

If they have follow up games that are bangers, then this strategy will work. But if it’s Call of Duty followed another dead period then it won’t last.

crazyCoconuts16h ago

From MS financial perspective I think it may be the opposite.
A year of GamePass on PC is less than the price of two full price games. For all the people that would have bought COD for $70 but instead started subbing for GP, MS will get an extra $50/year which is good.
However, for each banger that MS puts out, that's lost potential revenue because the GP sub won't need to buy it.
So it only makes sense where the new GP customers would have otherwise not spent more money with MS... Which is the case if MS puts out low quality shovelware.

rlow114h ago

If you’re looking at the short term you are correct. But if Xbox can have multiple bangers then subscriptions should increase. Which is what they want, recurring revenue.

S2Killinit6h ago(Edited 6h ago)

I think this is more about microtransactions. MS wants to see if the upfront losses will be offset by more people login into the “free” game and buying more microtransactions to justify not selling as much COD games.

I honestly not sure. I feel like everyone who likes COD is already playing/buying it so I’m not sure how much more engagement they can get by putting it on gamepass. On the other hand, I also feel a lot of COD players are casual gamers, and they are the type to click on anything that is “free” ex: mobile gaming style

Sonic188115h ago

I don't see it working if Call of Duty makes less money and profits over time from gamepass 🤔

blackblades15h ago

I dont understand why have it on it when we all know it sells with the name alone. Seems stupid to lose so much sales and $ just to have it on game pass. They basically shooting themselves in the foot with a already injured foot from all the other times they shoot themselves in the foot.

CrashMania14h ago

@blackblades, that's my exact point, even on xbox where most software sells poorly CoD still sells millions, but the thing is, if you don't put it on GP you kinda shatter the whole idea they've build GP up to be, they've dug this hole themselves.

I think it might tick up subscribers a bit, but warzone is already free and gets millions of players regardless of GP. But where will those extra subs come from? Xbox sales are dropping like a rock, PC gamers are very firmly rooted in Steam and will just buy it there.

Tacoboto13h ago

@black

If they don't include it on Game Pass, they lose the claim of First-Party Day-One on Game Pass, and thus would begin the slippery slope of what's-ok-to-not-include and the devaluing of the service, and further sinking Microsoft/Xbox's already tarnished reputation.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place and this move buys them time to work out more future-math.

crazyCoconuts13h ago

I still expect a price increase in GP to compensate but who knows. With all the factors in play like COD points there are too many variables for someone on the outside to predict what will happen. I assume they have a forecast model where this all looks peachy.

When the game does not hit 1 Billion in revenue in under two weeks they will wonder why and the next thing you know; Season Updates will no longer be free.

Noskypeno17h ago

Yup, the CEO needs a new yacht and private jet

Abear2114h ago

Yeah I expect paid DLC and season pass in your face, now you are buying for a game you are renting

neomahi1h ago

That's where they're relying on PC and PlayStation gamers to pick up the slack. They know their business model isn't lasting so in order to give it away "free" for Xbox, they're banking on PC and PS5 customers to make up for the sales loss on Xbox, otherwise they wouldn't be able to pull this off like they want to. Xbots don't see it but, it's their gaming brethren that'll keep their console manufacturer afloat a little longer because the service they hold so dear isn't viable anymore. So, it's by the good graces of their fellow gamers they live to fight another day.

Consumers don't understand how Xbox Game Pass really works. It's not about the volume, and maybe Xbox doesn't want them to know. It's not about how many games you play. Developers don't make money by how many people play their game, it's HOW LONG you play. How many hours to put in.

Customers like David Jaffe that only like to sample don't help the service succed. Jaffe is a cheapskate stoner who spends all his money on Diet Coke, Jolly Ranchers, and weed to fry his brains (it's medically proven, sorry to disappoint) but Jaffe wants as much as he can get for as little so, he's not much of an advocate. But he also plays games for a little while and then gives up, it's just his personality, maybe A.D.D. or something, but Game Pass is dependent on how long a gamer sinks hours in. Why do you think Phil Spencer wants Helldivers 2? Because gamers don't put it down. Hellblade II, they'll play the campaign and then be done. Games like that sink to the bottom of the pile, they disappear. Xbox LIKES Games as a Service business models because it sells their service, but that model doesn't work for Sony, Helldivers was a stroke a luck, lightning that won't hit twice because PS fans don't want that. But that's how Xbox keeps it's games at the top of the list and on their service. The longer you play a single game, that's how devs make money

purple10116h ago

subscribers go up, execs celebrate win, get bonus, price goes up, subscribers go down,

execs dont care, got their bonus,

MrDead15h ago

If it works CEOs and shareholders get a payday and if it doesn't even more studios get closed by MS so CEOs and shareholders get a payday.

Elda15h ago

It will sell on PC & PS but as long as COD is for rent on Gamepass it will not sell well on the XB platform. Most folks such as myself that like COD just for the campaign would rather rent it for that month instead of paying $70 plus tax for the game.

IAMRealHooman15h ago

Your smart.
its 70 for base plus 10 to 20 for a season pass plus another 30 for there better season pass,

darthv7214h ago

...now you are finally getting how to use GP. No commitments, just play what is offered. if you like it so much and want to keep a copy for yourself... you can buy it when you want to. I used to buy games based on if they looked appealing and have been burned many times on things. With this, I can try before I buy. And I have actually bought several games after having rented them in the service. It literally is like the old days of renting only you get the whole store instead of pay per rental.

Elda14h ago

I've been knowing how to use Gamepass. I sub the service yearly & I play games on the service that I don't have to pay the full price for such as Persona 3:Reload. I mostly play & pay for games on my PS5 but if a game lands on GP that I'm interested in playing & I don't have to buy a copy for the PS5 I'll definitely play it on Gamepass.

I just cannot believe we haven't had a game from them this generation nearly 4 years in.. crazy!

Knightofelemia2d ago

If the game is crap then yes there will always be negative feedback it comes with the territory. It's called word of mouth or welcome to the internet. Where the truth about a game comes out really fast whether the game is good or crap. If you can't handle the criticism because of a game then why publish the game. Why should people who never criticized or even played the game be punished? Vietnam has some really screwed up laws block Steam because they don't answer us rule. And going on a witch hunt with Steam please. Where's the proof, where's the evidence of this witch hunt. Somebody is butt hurt and has a Vietnamese Karen leading the witch hunt.
