Horizon: Zero Dawn Dev Guerrilla Expanding, Moving to New Five-Floor Office

Guerrilla Games has always been one of Sony’s most important developers, but with the release of Horizon: Zero Dawn its stocks have risen dramatically. The studio is now one of the most recognised games companies in the world, working on one of the most promising new intellectual properties. The problem? It needs more space.

Nice. Do these guys have two teams or...?

Would be nice for the other team to do a reboot of Killzone or an open world fantasy RPG like Elder Scrolls

Killzone would have to be rebooted and give the main character a personality like they did with Aloy. Maybe someone who isn't a soldier like if they have the Helghast invading Vekta/Earth in this reboot where they strike first they could have some Dad in a suburban estate where he has to fight back along with the neighbourhood resistance group as he protects his family...give it a Resistance 3 feel to it. Would be better then the typical "I'm a soldier...I'm fighting in the war...I'm a badass from the get go...oh by the way I have a typical shaven head space marine grunt look"

uptownsoul2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

Guerrilla Games…GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS!!! 400 full-time employee…Hopefully that means 2 FULL studios…HZD sequel(s) is a must for 1 of the studios!!!

@-Foxtrot

Killzone…maybe…For a shooter, I guess…But I dont get why they would start another RPG…HZD is their RPG & its a commercial & critical SMASH HIT!!!

-Foxtrot2139d ago

Why not start another RPG? Bethesda does Fallout and Elder Scrolls and one is Sci-Fi while the other is Fantasy

I mean I want a Hoirzon sequel but if they wanted to stretch the release out to next gen and work on something new now I wouldn’t be against it. What’s the downside?

uptownsoul2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

@-Foxtrot

Yeah, Bethesda initially started those 2 RPGs way back when developing a AAA cost a LOT less money & their studio could survive from a failed new IP…In today day, development studios can close down behind a new AAA IP that fails (commercially and/or critically)…

Sony & Guerrilla got a new IP that succeeded, both commercially & critically…There's no need to risk anything until HZD has become stale (which is at least 2 or 3 sequels from now)…They should rake in the money form those sequels & when/if HZD gets stale…THEN start on another RPG

RememberThe3572139d ago

I know I need to be a better community member and look this up but I remember an interview Herman did where he mentions how the studio has grown into two teams that sort of overlap, and I swear he gave a nod to KZ. I might just be hoping against hope, and they really need to reboot KZ, but I'll always look forward to a KZ game. They all haven't been great, I really liked the first two, but I love the world they made.

Whatever they do next I'll want a piece of.

showtimefolks2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

Uptown

Definitely more than one team same as nd and even Sony bend have a 2nd team. I think Sony has this thing figured out instead of paying millions buying studios how about keep adding more teams within the same studio

Sony Santa Monica has 2 at one time they had 3 but I could be wrong

If they are gonna do a killzone please don't try to be otter casual shooters and be more like killzone 2. Story wise show both sides and their struggle don't be so like these are good and those are bad guys. Have some Grey area show the real affects of war

Do a complete reboot from scratch and get it ready as a Ps5 Launch title

Shiken2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

HZD2 is a given. The game is pure bliss.

Killzone should only be pursued if they are going to follow the formula behind Killzone 2 or Killzone Mercenaries. If they go any other route, I would rather have a new IP. I loved Killzone, but they seemed to lose sight of where they were headed with the franchise toward the end.

DarXyde2139d ago

Just because you can make a sequel so soon does not always mean you should. That takes away some of the magic.

A new project would be more exciting, at least for me.

nowitzki20042139d ago

Just need more of HZD universe. KZ BR would be great.

From the article
“We have worked at Horizon for 6.5 years, which is exceptional: we want to release games in the two or three years, both new titles and games based on existing titles.”

So, this move is to hire more people full time, and increase frequency of game releases, for both New IP and their current IPs, being KZ and Horizon

blackblades2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

6.5 years is a long time for a game to be in development. It's a good move and some companies need to do the same and try for the 2 years releases. Smaller devs needs to merge cause some of there games be taking to long.

Muzikguy2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

I agree and disagree. Many times games get rushed just to meet deadlines and they fail miserably for it. From story to gameplay some games suffer massively from this. I’m not saying every game should take 6.5 years, but look at the masterpiece we got from it

@black

I don’t think smaller devs should merge. They should stay true to who they are and crest what they want. Unless merging wouldn’t hinder that (but many times it does)

Hardiman2139d ago

Fox I like the way you think!

Dirtnapstor2139d ago

Loved the Killzone series through and through. KZ2 had one of the best foreboding endings ever! If they continued the series, I would like to see more backstory, pre/post the colonization of Vekta and Helghan and then the rise of the Helghast.

sinspirit2139d ago (Edited 2139d ago )

I've been thinking the same thing. I would love an open world fantasy game from them. Oblivion is one of my all time favorites.

I also would love Insomniac and GG to collaborate and combine the best things of Resistance and KillZone into one.

Muzikguy2138d ago (Edited 2138d ago )

That idea would be cool for another HZD game. I don’t get the fascination with rebooting everything though lately. It can be a totally different game still set in the HZD universe. Some reboots I can understand, but I’d like to remember the originals over the new games if at all possible. Any time a studio reboots a game it’s the same name and it’s almost fluke they want to forget about the first one

Also, constantly changing something just because you can would give less meaning to the story IMO. Like “why get attached to or connect with any character in a game if they’re just going to change it later” type of thing.

-Foxtrot2137d ago

My idea was about Killzone not HZD

Muzikguy2137d ago

Ah. It was. I misread that I guess 😁

Next gen Killzone would be amazing. I just hope it's not rushed like Shadow Fall, even though I still loved it.

b163o12139d ago

Completely agree, KZ has been shelved long enough it's time for a reboot. I can honestly say I miss thous RedEyes lol

Sevir2139d ago

I want them to delve into KZ lore, and have a writer pull it all together into a compelling story. Because the Lore of KZ is fantastic, rich and deep, but the KZ team and it's writers can't seem to put it into something truly compelling... The Next Killzone, if it's the next game on their docket needs time and attention, the very way that Horizon: Zero Dawn got all the tender love and care that made it the master piece this is.

HZD elevated GG to notoriety like ND!

Anything less than the quality established with Horizon makes them spotty. So if the Next KZ take 6.5 years to get right. I'm all for it

Ashlen2139d ago

This may be unpopular, not sure. But I would love a open world Killzone like some kind of cross between Fallout, Stalker, and Metal Gear. Give it a next gen reboot.

legendkilla2139d ago

Still the best headshot sound in a video game

KillZallthebeast2139d ago

Shadowfall was a huge letdown for me since it was one of the first ps4 games I got. Not a bad game, but not particularly a good sequel

XxSPIDEYxX2139d ago

Like I said, it was rushed, specifically to be an exclusive launch title for the PS4. With enough time and creativity they can make a true sequel, or prequel to Killzone on par with the quality of Horizon.

KwietStorm_BLM2139d ago

I just want Killzone 2 part 2. Not KZ3, not Shadowfall. I want an improved Killzone 2, with the custom secondary badge, the original class system, higher player count, without the stupid capture point nukes, and with the larger symmetric maps.

XxSPIDEYxX2139d ago

Killzone 2 was something special, of course many would disagree because they refused to get used to the gun weight mechanic. I agree, I had the most MP fun with Killzone 2.

KillZallthebeast2139d ago

I personally like the weighty gun mechanics. Set it apart from twitch shooters that run rampant today.

Sevir2139d ago

Yeah, Killzone 2 is incredible, it's By far GG's best shooter, I want every KZ2 is in a New KZ game with a story every bit as compelling as the Lore of KZ Universe and enthralling and filled with small side stories like Horizon, and they can go the photorealistic approach with the tweaks Kojima made to DECIMA for usage in DS.

Gamist2dot02139d ago

I can't get over the story/writing and the ability to carry one weapon and a pistol. I'd prefer a fresh story on a discovery of a new bio weapon that's gone wrong or a new enemy and both sides have to collaborate to survive.

Vigant2139d ago

i think they should hold off on the next killzone game until the ps5 comes out since those games were always very demanding

OpenGL2139d ago

Killzone Shadow Fall really got a lot of undeserved hate, I thought it was a beautiful game visually and a mostly good chance of pace from Killzone 3.

Time for a change. Football games haven't evolved much.

It’s tough when there is no competition

Abear2116h ago

There’s PES and now we’ll have FC25 and FIFA so yes, but it is no longer true, shit is about to get real!

Now if we only had two viable options for Basketball and American football we’d be on to something.

MrNinosan11h ago

@Abear21
PES didn't exist since 2020, and the rebranded eFootball is crap.

porkChop8h ago

If what we've heard is true, the reason FIFA games don't change is literally because of FIFA itself rejecting nearly every pitch for new features and mechanics.

Sorry George Miller, but you’re wrong about the Mad Max game

George Miller expressed dismay toward the 2015 Mad Max game recently, but Avalanche Studios' take on the lore is still so good to this day.

Mad Max is a good game... George Miller should STFU.

Old_Scout14h ago

He didn't say it wasn't good. Maybe you should take your own advice and look past the articles misleading headline. Here's the actual quote. “wasn’t as good as we wanted it to, it wasn’t in our hands.” That is all he said about it.

S2Killinit11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

In my opinion the guy himself Is pretty mediocre, so I dont like how he talks as if he’s something special. I dont think he would know a good game if it hit him in the face.

StormSnooper10h ago(Edited 10h ago)

If George Miller had good taste he wouldn’t be wearing those ridiculous glasses.

-Foxtrot1d 10h ago

I think the funny thing is if Kojima made a Mad Max game it would be so trippy and "out there" I don't think it would feel like Mad Max by the time he's done with it. This is why he's better off with original new IPs.

Kojima seems like a buzz word these film directors use because he's probably the only big name they've heard from the gaming industry.

Wretchedstain1d 5h ago

Article is correct in my opinion, Miller is wrong. That Death Stranding II trailer is bonkers, looking forward to that in itself.

And I agree, unless Mr Kojima wants to change his tune, or laughably, be told what to do, you're right, it wouldn't be Mad Max or close.

porkChop1d 5h ago

Yup, Kojima really doesn't suit Mad Max. Avalanche did a great job though. It looked, felt, and played like what I'd expect from a Mad Max game. I really enjoyed my time with it, and the sand storms were handled incredibly well.

jznrpg12h ago

I think Kojima could definitely make a great Mad Max game.

SubtilizZer9h ago

I disagree… I don’t want to see Kojima do Mad Max or whatever… But I disagree with your take. Kojima is first a huge fan of film. I think saying he wouldn’t be able to stick to the lore of the world that was built is kinda crazy.

I’m sure he would be able to stick to the creative confines of the source material fairly well. Chances are he’s a huge fan.

I’m sure he’s a bit of a”buzzword” sure but I’m willing to bet it’s mutual respect for his work as well.

TheGamingHounds1d 4h ago

I never played it but the recent buzz around Mad Max has piqued my interest. Will check it out this year for sure

maelstromb1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 3h ago )

MM is not a perfect game by any means as it was held back by lots of repetitious, standard open-world copy and paste missions, but the devs SO perfectly captured the world, atmosphere, lore and brutality. It also just so happens to boast one of THE best photo modes out there and some of the most impressive explosions I've ever seen in a game to date. The car combat is of course another impressive standout, both vicious and fun. MM is a game which I have revisited multiple times since its release, and now having just seen Furiosa, I can feel it calling me back again.

There's a ton to love there, but I think you'll pickup on the areas where the devs struggled likely due to reigning in the scope, budget and time constraints, leading to an incredibly fun, albeit uneven experience. Though, as mentioned, it's absolutely a game worth experiencing once, and I truly hope you enjoy it. The game really does deserve a sequel.

victorMaje1d 2h ago

Word for word. Exactly this. A lot of fun to be had in there. A true Mad Max game. Sequel can’t come soon enough.

gigoran817h ago

and the fact that they originally had an American voice actor until everyone kicked up a big stink about it?

maelstromb1d 3h ago

Honestly, Kojima would do the game justice, but given his studio's current workload, it's a bit far flung. I could much rather see Bend Studios (Days Gone dev) doing a Mad Max follow-up. I'm playing through DG right now for the first time and I see lots of similarities between the games to where imo Bend could develop an impressive MM sequel.

jznrpg12h ago

Bend does makes sense. But I’d rather they made Days Gone 2 (no multiplayer of course) as I really like the motorcycle and the hordes of zombies was a lot of fun.

VersusDMC1d 3h ago

While i like the Mad Max game and think it's underrated...i don't know why people are mad at George Miller for not liking the game based on the IP he created. Especially since a lot of people hated it at release as well looking at that 69% metacritic.

-Foxtrot22h ago

I think the issue is the studio was told by higher ups and most likely himself to make something linear yet when they got a first look at it they didn’t like it and wanted something open world

The head guy was basically like “you’ve just hired an open world dev and forced them to do a linear game yet now you want open world which has just wasted a year of development which we could have done from the start”

I think that’s why people are p****** because of the context the lead dev at Avalanche has given us.
