Pokemon Switch Still Isn't Giving Fans What They Really Want

Nintendo unveiled the first Pokemon RPGs for Switch but it's not nearly enough.

It's a spin off so it's not too bad. I think the worst is that everyone was expecting the core pokemon game to be out this year and instead we got the let's go titles so disappointment is fairly expected I think. They could be interesting though, look forward to seeing more and I may even give it a go. I certainly like the pokeball accessory!

-Foxtrot2176d ago

" everyone was expecting the core pokemon game to be out this year"

It's a shame considering they did give off the impression last year when they announced a Pokemon Switch game that it was going to come in 2018...you know when people claimed Nintendo won E3 over a black screen with the Pokemon logo on it because it "was finally a Pokemon console game". In the end when we are finally expecting to see more of that game they teased we end up getting a Pokemon Yellow remake infused with Pokemon Go. Not what we wanted.

The fact this has happened with Pokemon I'm not holding out for Metroid 4 to be released this year considering that was another game revealed with nothing but a logo on a black screen. If they had nothing to show us last E3 then I can't see it being released this year...might be wrong, hopefully I'm wrong but it makes you think.

thatguyhayat2176d ago

This is true, many were claiming Nintendo won cause of the announcement of pokemon along with metroid prime. No trailer no anything.

Prince_TFK2176d ago

I’d rather they take their time than rushing it out.

Antnee5342176d ago

They said 2018 or later so they werd not wrong its just later not now

Fantomex2176d ago

"I’d rather they take their time than rushing it out."

That's fine, but wouldn't you rather have the same resources invested in the core games instead of some companion game for a dead mobile app?

Prince_TFK2176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

@Fontomax

Nintendo and Gamefreak/Pokemon Company aren’t comprised of just one team you know. They have been working on multiple Pokemon games at the same time for awhile now, so this isn’t strange or new for them.

And no, this is not a companion game for Pokemon Go. It has Pokemon Go’s integrations, but it is still its own game. Watch the reveal trailer.

Fantomex2176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

So instead of a proper Yellow remake we get a companion game.

Still a waste. It's a waste of an entire great idea.

@edit: it is a companion game. It's literally made for Pokemon Go. I've watched the trailer, the very first thing the trailer shows is Pokemon go.

Segata2176d ago

Actually no. The E3 Video he says could take more than a year to come out. They pretty much said not in 2018 in E3 2017.

mcstorm2175d ago

I love how people just moan about anything. Yes it's not the RPG game everyone was expecting but it's also not the full Pokémon game Nintendo said they were developing so this game is still coming. This is a game to keep Pokémon fans going until the new one is out but I also think it's a great game to get people who are/were a fan of Pokémon go as this looks an easy to play Pokémon game where family's can play together.

Stop being negotiate all the time people if you don't like it don't buy it but I see this selling very well and for me will give me a fix until the new game is out.

Fantomex2176d ago

It would be nice having a Pokemon yellow proper remake. Then we would get one for Crystal, and Emerald.

Those ideal games would be jam packed with so much nostalgia from the golden years of Pokemon, especially Yellow.

I'm upset because this is a wasted idea IMO. A Pokemon Yellow remake made just for a dead mobile app. Clearly it's done as a last ditch effort before Nintendo removes the Pokemon Go servers.

TimelessDbz2176d ago

Wasn't fire red and lead green a remake

Codewow2176d ago

But these Pokémon games ARE core games. They feature nearly everything you expect a normal Pokémon game to include, plus some platform specific features.

princejb1342176d ago

Yea I just don't get the hate. It's a full game for a console what everyone been wanting

Fantomex2176d ago

There will be no wild Pokemon battles.

Not a core Pokemon game.

Shiken2176d ago

It is a remake of pokemon yellow, a core title. People need to actually look into the games before spreading false info. These are not spin offs by any stretch of the imagination.

What we really have is one free to start spin off that just dropped.

Two core remakes coming this holiday.

And two NEW mainline games next year.

The more you know------------☆

princejb1342176d ago

Is this really a spin off? Looks like a full rpg to me with first gen Pokémon

ninsigma2175d ago

@above
How could it be a core title when they've removed a core component of the game and adding in the gimmick of a mobile app?? Not to mention that the devs have even said there's a core title coming next year, it just screams spin off. And that's fine. No need to get worked up about calling it that.

princejb1342175d ago

what is the core component they removed?
the only difference i saw is that wild pokemon can now be seen on the map.

ninsigma2175d ago

Wild battles seem to have been removed. Could be wrong, and if I am then apologies for misinformation, but looks like it's just catching wild Pokemon now without an actual battle and battles are reserved for trainer battles.

InTheZoneAC2176d ago

If this spinoff is supposed to lead us to the core game next year I'm very disappointed. I wanted an immersive world of pokemon with us exploring it, think Horizon. Instead we get 3ds style pokemon. Nothing wrong with that, but Nintendon't didn't go anywhere near my hopes and comfortably stayed within expectations.

paintedgamer19842176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

Agreed, for the core gamers looking for amazing AAA 1st partys or M rated games, 2018 is looking pretty bare from nintendo.

Kun ADR

The only game you mentioned im slightly excited for is B3 and even then at this point im ready for bayo to get a complete shake up like the new god of war... ive played enough smash brothers games by now and esp if the new 1 is just a port of the wiiu game with things added which hasnt been confirmed nor denied, and fire emblem is meh.

Prince_TFK2176d ago

You forget games like Smash, Fire Emblem, and an M rated exclusive in Bayonetta 3. But hey...why would Nintendo want to release more games?

Jaypi032176d ago

If you're really a "core gamer" then you'd realize quality games come out regardless of age ratings or huge budgets.

Just because you personally aren't open to other games that aren't AAA or "Mature" it doesn't mean they're not worth enjoying.

wonderfulmonkeyman2176d ago

Asking for Pokemon to be like Horizon is like asking Pokemon to suck.
The two styles will not mesh.

Jaypi032176d ago

Really? Horizon? I like the game but let's be real here. If you were expecting something similar to horizon or even breath of the wild you're setting yourself up for disappointment. Game freak usually plays it safe with their Pokemon games.

Outlawzz2176d ago

Pokemon exploration like horizon ? That was never going to happen, you set yourself up for that disappointment. It was obvious this would use an upgraded style of sun and moon. The switch isn't all that powerful and gamefreak really don't push graphics at all.

InTheZoneAC2176d ago

Well I guess high expectations are something I'm conditioned to by other devs that go beyond.

Like I said there's nothing wrong with Yellow HD, but I've had visions of a true 3d world Pokemon game back when GameCube was out even though I never had one. To say I've set myself up for disappointment just speaks volumes how Nintendon't/gamefreak will only settle for "good enough".

OMNlPOTENT2175d ago

Seriously? Horizon? It’s not even the same genre of game. Pokémon switching up their combat would demolish the entire system they’ve worked so hard to form. That’s like saying Uncharted should try and tackle an open world RPG, it just doesnt seem right. As long as they make a beautiful Pokémon game with god help me no z-moves (plz I hate z moves) I will be happy.

ninsigma2175d ago

I'd go more a Ni No Kuni 1 style over horizon style. NNK seems almost ready made for Pokemon imo.

AdonisIsBeast2176d ago

Pokemon will not satisfy (rightfully so) anyone who has supported the franchise since the beginning, until they completely redefine the gameplay experience(s), invest in more deep story and rpg mechanics (versus childish gimmicks like petting pokemon), and give a more expansive and living world. Essentially turn what made the show so great and put it into a properly budgeting video game.

Signal132176d ago

Speak for yourself. I’ve played since ‘98 and I think this game looks just fine. I’m happy I can visit Kanto one more time before I let this series go. No pun intended.

Signal132176d ago

But I understand that a lot of you want another 20 hour tutorial like sun and moon. To each their own. Maybe you’ll get that in 2019.
Hell, maybe these “go” games will be just as insultingly hand holding.
The assumption that wild battles are out of the game is understandable. But I don’t think we know everything yet. And I’ll happily eat my words if for whatever reason we can participate in trainer battles, team rocket battles, *im assuming gym battles. But can’t battle wild Pokémon. I just don’t see that being a feasibility. I think they showed off the new capture mechanics out of context.

“Gawl the capture mechanic is such a weak gimmick, where are my Z-moves and mega evolutions?”

notachance2176d ago (Edited 2176d ago )

pretty sure "anyone who has supported the franchise since the beginning" will be downright angry if the developer completely throws away all the battle mechanics and meta they've build over the years making all the Pokemon people saved in Pokemon bank useless and having to start from scratch.

I agree with the deep story and more expansive and living world part though but whatever happens I'm 100% the battle mechanics won't change that much, it's already damn confusing as it is if you try competitive battles.

AdonisIsBeast2176d ago

Don’t think anyone understood that I never said anything in regards to battle mechanics.

ninsigma2175d ago

Not me. Played since release of red and I'm dying for combat change up. I'm so hoping for Ni No Kuni 1 style.

MrSec842176d ago

I'm interested to see more, I like the style of it, it's a shame there's no Wild Pokémon battle though.

I need to see more before deciding whether I'd get a copy for my Switch, haven't played a Pokémon game since the original Gameboy release so I could be interested if there's enough diversity in the gameplay, environments and in the overall quality and quantity of content.

TekoIie2176d ago

Tbh I'm just happy that we can have something a little different while also being able to have the core RPG next year. I would rather a spinoff like what we've had in the past like Mystery Dungeon.

Will this be as good as a core game? Nope. Will it still be something fun that offers a better Pokemon experience compared to previous spinoffs? Most likely.

Pennywise1382176d ago

There's no less than 4 Pokémon games coming to switch in the next year and a half starting today with the last one being a full blown triple A game that takes time to make. What more can you ask for if your a fan of the series?

MrSec842176d ago

There probably wouldn't have been souch backlash if the games had wild Pokémon battles.
Online play would have helped too.

Fortunately for Nintendo, the legal team is separate from Game Freak’s development team.

NotoriousWhiz104d ago

Unfortunately for us, as their legal team seems to be more competent than Game Freak's development team.

gold_drake105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

they do tho .. IF there is something to sue for. IP infringement is such a delicate thing.

but absolutely agree on the change

GoodGuy09105d ago

That, have longer dev time, and absolutely get rid of Nintendo as the exclusive platform. Imagine a AAA pkmn game on current consoles or next generation.

But money, they'll make billions with little effort.

badz149104d ago

you know that's never gonna happen

FinalFantasyFanatic104d ago

Gamer Freak, Creatures and Nintendo all have a stake in the Pokemon franchise, Nintendo especially will never let them go, I don't know how Creatures or Game Freak feels about it. Plus, the other two don't have a financial incentive to ditch Nintendo, they make mega bucks regardless. Although I think Nintendo should help Game Freak out more since they're clearly struggling, other they'll all just have to accept longer dev times and bigger gaps between games, or maybe just make some cheaper low-tier games in-between.

shinoff2183105d ago

Idk yall. I'd take a Pokémon jrpg over a Pokémon with guns, online play etc. Plus wasn't Pokémon mobile pretty fking big like 4 years ago then covid hit.

--Onilink--104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

Even Scarlet/Violet had sold 24million as of early November (and undoubtedly sold even more during the Holidays), its not like they are currently suffering.

Yes, there are plenty of things I would like Gamefreak to do better, and yes I happened to like Palworld, but not because its a Pokemon clone, because its not, but because its a good survival game, something that I have zero interest for the mainline Pokemon games to become.

Most publications keep bringing up these topic ls just for clicks, because clearly the game is your typical survival game (most who do well on PC) with some Pokemon sprinkled in and not a Pokemon competitor, the core gameplay loop is clearly just Ark with dinosaurs swapped for Pokemon like creatures

And again, while I’m enjoying the game itself, I hope it doesnt set a new precedent for what we expect from game devs these days because, based on their other games, this developer really seems to basically just try to go as close as possible to ripping off other games without getting into trouble and then not really following up on those projects as promised (Craftopia players seem particularly angry).

I doubt they ever expected the discourse around this game to reach this level of popularity to push those insane sales numbers, and they actually take the opportunity to increase the quality of their work

FinalFantasyFanatic104d ago (Edited 104d ago )

I'm going to say something somewhat controversial, the last set of Pokemon games weren't that bad, it wasn't a great game, but a good game if we ignore the performance issues (and I personally didn't have many bugs).

They just need more interesting towns and NPCs (give them interesting dialogue, there's literally no reasons to talk to NPCs), interesting areas/locations (like the sunken ship and Bellsprout Tower), and some decent side quest, there isn't really any interesting side quests in those games, and fix the barely there lore for the game (Idk even know what was going on with those 4 "legendary Pokemon"). And maybe add less new Pokemon into the next game so they can transition more of the older Pokemon into 3D.

I think Scarlet/Violet had the potential to go from a good game to a great game if they implemented most of those ideas, but they also needed more development time to optimise the game as well.

Profchaos104d ago

Yeah agree id take a remake of red in the style of the links awakening remake any day of the week

Profchaos104d ago

No they don't I don't want any of the gameplay anywhere near Pokemon the only link between them is the idea of Pokemon except there's guns you enslave humans and Pokemon and there's a survival aspect.

Pokemon is fairly family friendly can't see Nintendo going ok let's give them m16s and slaughter each other
