Eurogamer: Golden Axe: Beast Rider Review

It would have been far better to follow Namco and Capcom and resurrect the series as a modernised sequel in a downloadable retro style. Castle Crashers has already shown that there's a market for well-produced 2D hackandslash, but instead gamers get this utterly charmless and shamelessly derivative 3D shrug of a game. SEGA might as well have released this as The Adventures of Fiery Boob Lady, and left their mothballed franchise with at least modicum of dignity.

After watching the trailer for this game I thought it looked ok as an XBLA or PSN download that would score around 6.5/10. However, releasing it as a full game?!? surely SEGA is joking?!?

Oh wait, now I get it. SEGA is going for the Guinness book of records for most released games that no one buys record. Hell, they might just do it however, it would probably mean breaking the record they already hold.

...got the green light. That is, a couple of SEGA developers were getting their jollies off on a character they had created and thought it would be a cool idea to build a game around her. What they forgot was that they had no idea how to make a game as they were only hired to dust off the keyboards whilst the real developers were at home patting themselves on the back for their recent successes with Sonic and Sega Rally.

I completely agree. Some of the games I enjoy playing this generation of consoles, reviewers completely tore apart. Like Sonic for instance. I have and play the PS3 version of the game. Yes it has load times up the ass, but the actual gameplay isn't that bad. It won't redefine gaming as we know it but if you just sit down and play it for what it is without expecting a world changing experience it's actually enjoyable. I've watched the gameplay videos and I've seen reviewers rip apart a game just because it didn't match what they hold up for expectations. Is Golden Axe groundbreaking? Doubtful. But I will most likely be picking it up when first I have an opportunity. I suggest that people at least rent the game to judge for themselves. Don't just go with what reviews you read on the web. Remember, everybody has an opinion. Some like things and some don't. I suggest you form your own before you decide to judge something you've not even tried. I know I'm gonna receive a lot of flak and disagrees here, but that's the way it should be.

I was pulling for this game to do well. I enjoy a hack and slash and even found Conan to be a decent enough romp. Looks like things didn't work out so well.

Secret Level was the developer on this game and their last game was the not so well received Iron Man, so maybe it just wasn't in the cards.

I cant believe they release fodder like this. Surely someone overlooking the development of these games at some point must say " Guys, this is pants. Scrap it" If this is the best the "creative" minds at SEGA can come up with then they need a shake up, big time. Yes they once ruled, their arcade heritage is what has seen them through but the world has caught up and surpassed them. People are no longer happy with 8 hours basic gameplay with no replay value.
Its time to branch out SEGA. Do away with the 'safe' option.

They should have had 4 player co-op, kept all the characters, and made it similar to the originals.

If not then they should have had an updated version of the originals for XBLA and PSN.

rented it and played it for about an hour... id say 3 is a little harsh i'd give it a 5 or a 6 based on what i played.

I bought the game tonight and I don't feel disappointed. The graphics may not be as sharp as some triple A titles, but the game is quite playable and accessible. I think the price point should be dropped by 10-20 dollars, but it's not bad by any means, certainly undeserving of the lowball score offered by Eurogamer. I'd give it at least a 6.5 at the bare minimum.

If you bought this game then you must have more money than sense. There are some fantastic games coming, SEGA should indeed have made this a ten quid psn game or released it in march or something. Utter dross
