Why it’s so easy to dig yourself into a financial hole with games like Fortnite

It’s free at first, but players say they’ve spent $500 per month or more on the wildly popular game.

These are the type of games Microsoft rather create for their fanbase because it's not only fun but cost is cheap to create and doesn't take much time to make compared to triple a games. Also nowadays these type of games bring in alot of money. Their plans may change from all the backlash from alot of their fanbase but e3 is right around the corner.

Neonridr2189d ago

Fornite has nothing to do with MS though. What MS games follow this model at all?

SuperSaiyanGod412189d ago

Sea of theives, state of decay, crackdown 3. I didn't mean they are battle royal games but they are all multiplayer games and not triple a kind of games. These 3 games are all from Microsoft studios.

Neonridr2189d ago

@SuperSaiyanGod41 - but the article is talking about games that suck people in and get them to spend money. Which of those three games you just listed follow that model at all?

Neonridr

They may suck but they sell like crazy, just the same way I feel of cod games. I'm a single player games guy but there's a reason Microsoft loves these type of games is because people buy these kind of games nowadays. Look pubg and sea of thieves, how successful they are on Xbox but in my opinion they're both trash but millions buy it.

All I'm saying is though Sony and Nintendo may be outselling the Xbox on a weekly and monthly basis, Microsoft makes up for it because of the success of xbl and game pass and these type of games help them out alot on the online portion of gaming. This is why Microsoft is not worried about selling the most consoles. Would more console sales help? Of course it would but they are still doing well as they are now.

Fortnite is gaas if you didn't know

@Neonrider

I just cant understand how these garbage streamers playing these very games can suck kids into donating them money let alone the games themselves sucking kids into spending money.

Crackdown games aren't just multiplayer though

EDKICK2188d ago

Neither State of Decay 2 or Crackdown 3 have microtransaction, neither are GAAS, and State of Decay 2 is Coop not MP, what are you on about? This article literally has nothing to do with MS and MS has exactly one GAAS as a service game: Sea of Thieves. EA and Ubi have been the ones pushing MT's and GAAS super heavy.

Anyways this article is talking about the price and addictive nature of the rollout of Fortnite skins. As well as the current zeitgeist around having all the new skins. Again how did you get so far off topic to get to bashing MS?

Hardiman2189d ago

Yeah some people are more susceptible to impulse purchasing but if they are minors it's on the parents to offer support and try to put it into perspective.

PhantomS422188d ago

And it's these casuals that are ruining the industry by feeding into microtransactions and ruining other games.

PUBG2188d ago

I was talking to someone on my friends list, who said that he's never spent so much money before, as he has with Rocket League, basically because of all of the skins that you can buy for your car. I just can't understand why people spend so much money on that crap.

I purchase game add-ons, seasons passes and the odd weapon skin or character outfit from time to time, but I've never gone crazy with it. This type of dlc has absolutely no value, especially being online only. It's crazy to think that parents would be allowing their kids to buy this junk, and probably with their parent's credit card on their account.

Hardiman2188d ago

I've never understood the allure of cosmetics and things of that nature and really don't play those kinds of games. The last expansion I bought was The Frozen Wilds and I'll go for things like that but most of the time I just wait till the GOTY Edition. It's an expensive hobby anyways but I can see how someone who has a compulsive personality could get caught up in microtransactions.
