Red Dead Redemption 2 May Not Surpass GTA 5, Says Analyst

With over 90 million units shipped, Grand Theft Auto 5 is one of the most commercially successful video games of all time, not just for Rockstar, but for the entire industry at large. As per industry analyst Doug Creutz of Cowen & Company, though, there is a very low chance that any Rockstar game will ever surpass GTA 5’s achievements- and that includes Red Dead Redemption 2 as well.

More likely due the fact that it won't be launching on PS3 or 360. GTA V had the luxury of being on 5 platforms.

Yes, and I see this becoming a trend towards the end of console generations. Look @CP2077, it would be wise to have this game multi generational, first its gonna sale like crazy when it comes out, second to have an upgraded version release on stronger consoles just add fuel to there sales.

I hate to say this, but this multi generational release may become the norm for GTA. If GTA6 comes out in two years which seems like a strong possibility, they've set themselves up to do it again....

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the next Rockstar game. They don't churn games out annually, they take their time - so it's hotly anticipated. But there's NO chance it can match GTA V profits, and it isn't because there won't be a PS3/360 version and saying this isn't a slight on the game! Quite simply GTA V has become a phenomenon. Last week it was revealed that GTA has made brought in over $6 billion and that is more than ANY movie in history. It's a cultural phenomenon that has built a reputation for itself over 2 decades. V has a great single player but also a thriving online edition. It's not realistic for any game to match this.

But don't worry fans, RDR2 will still kill it this Christmas.

This is very odd. GTA 5 is the best selling game of all time. And it’s foundation is as solid as it gets. It has the single best brand recognition of any non-Nintendo game.

Who the hell would think that RDR2 would ever surpass it? And it doesn’t need to. I remember when RDR released and we all wondered if a western setting would even sell at all.

Does not count, it's called red dead redemption 2 for a reason, revolver was something else, not open world and totally different in every way. But nevertheless a fun little game.

You can’t really predict these things until the game comes out. We could possibly predict day 1 sales based on preorders and current interest, but long term forget about it.

Not this late in the "game". GTAV originally released on the PS3, a few months before the PS4 came out. So, a lot of people - myself included - bought it day-1, then "upgraded" to PS4, hence buying a 2nd copy. It's since had the life of the PS4 to grow, which it continues to do to this day. Red Dead Redemption 2 won't likely have that turn around as it's due out in 6 months and it'll likely be another year before Sony even officially announces the PS5 would release Fall 2020; if even then.

Then again, RDR2 might just be THAT awesome and the PS5 might just enhance the game THAT much giving reason to "upgrade" again. I mean, just look how gorgeous RDR is enhanced on Xbox One X right now. And I expect the PS5 to be even more powerful than XboneX.

Who cares! Redemption 2 won't match gta v, but will definitely make a profit (which is all that matters in the end)

I personally can't wait for some undead nightmare 2 online zombie horde (played dozens of hours with my buddy online playing that)

Probably not. For the majority (although I myself disagree) the wild west setting is probably less interesting than the modern day gangster saga that GTA is.

Well you can't slap ground effects and rims on a horse. I'm sure it'll be a lot of fun. Wish GTAV's engine was a bit updated, I'd still be playing it. Some of the PC mods look nice, but mods.

the master race dont even have the 1st one, and gta v is on all platforms pretty much where RDR was only on 2 and RDR2 will be on 2 compared to 5 like gta v

GTA5 is the "Despacito" of gaming...lol and it never gets old.
I think i will prefer RDR2 however, my type of gameplay.
