God of War Review | DailyDot

AJ Moser "My time with God of War saw the credits roll after about 30 hours of gratuitous violence, plot twists, and authentically earned emotional resonance. I was spit back out into Midgard with a new checklist of challenges to track down after beating the game, and I wanted to rush off to chase them down. But I can’t help but feel that some of my enthusiasm was whittled down over time by the number of nonsensical gameplay sequences I had to endure. Fixing elevator lifts, scaling mountain peaks, and decoding Norse runes constantly kept me from the thrilling combat encounters and tantalizing story clues I wanted to see."

Is he complaining that he had to play the game?

"nonsensical gameplay sequences I had to endure. Fixing elevator lifts, scaling mountain peaks, and decoding Norse runes" I think he meant just those parts of the game. He said the rest was great hence the high score

There is ALWAYS a war between graphics and gameplay. They are polar opposites. In this case, "graphics" tends to mean "cinematic gaming" which includes storytelling.

So, yeah. It's frustrating when you just want the "movie" to keep going and are forced to do what seems to be unrelated "gameplay" just so that they can continue to call it a game and not sell it as a movie. This is the same problem that most modern "AAA" games face. It's the "narrative dissonance" of having to condescend to make a game actually a game instead of just making it fully a movie. They have to do it in order to sell the product to the massive number of modern "gamers" who don't actually like playing games.

People will lie to you and tell you that the gaming industry has grown over the years. This isn't really true. There are still roughly the same number of people there have always been who actually like playing real games. What has changed is that developers have cracked the nut on how to make game-like-products that they can sell to a wider audience than just people who actually like games. That's why most games these days are "open world". "everything and the kitchen sink" games. They throw everything at the wall and hope that EVERYBODY will find SOME thing that they like to do in it.

"this God of War is easily the best entry in a long series that had no right to reinvent itself so well."
So he's saying none of the previous games deserve a score higher than 8/10? lol smh

Pancit_Canton2231d ago

Maybe their rating is 8/8. lol

TekoIie2231d ago

Actually a 4/5, and that doesn't 100% translate into 8/10.

i read through the review, i don't get this. the reviewer seemed to like the game to bits with the only issues being some puzzles, backtracking and fast travel and only an 8? by how much he praised the game it looks like a 9 at least.

AspiringProGenji2231d ago (Edited 2231d ago )

That’s probably why his review scale is 0-5. So 4 out of 5 is just one point away like 9 to 10 but then in the 0-10 scale it translates to 8 instead

Gazondaily2231d ago

Only an 8? 8 is a great score

Cyborgg2231d ago

You're going to be surprised by IGN score

Let the solid scores begin

Might be in a minority here but I didn't enjoy any of the sections playing as Atreus or having companions at all. If I had my way it'd be Kratos on his lonesome from start to finish. Straightforward action gameplay without the endless boring chatter.
