November 2019 would make the PS4 6 years old, which is usually when a new console releases. Sony also already said the PS3 life cycle of 7 years was too long. Plus, the PS4 Pro didn't increase the PS4 life cycle in any way. 2019 sound plausible.

Also, to anyone saying the PS4 is doing well and that means they shouldn't release another console because of it, don't bother. The success of a console has zero effect on when they release the successor, otherwise we would have gotten the PS3 much later because the PS2 was ridiculously successful.

@bouzebbal when you get a new phone you aren't moving to a new platform (unless you switch platforms). They certainly could move to a phone like model where eventually older hardware is no longer supported while they keep iterating, except I don't think they really want to keep going that way.

November 2019 makes sense from taking past consoles into account, and also based on how their first-party software is aligned. There's no guarantee the individual components will be ready for mass production then though, so it could end up releasing in 2020, for that reason alone.

Basically this. We might not get a custom 7nm chip ready in time, GDDR6 might be scarce as well even if it's only 20% more expensive than GDDR5.

But if it's ready, I can see it launching in 2019 easy. In fact, because of the similar architecture, I can already see them producing PS5 settings for late PS4 games, especially if dev kits are out in the wild. Not only do we have a precedent for great previous gen games launching in the same year as a nex gen system, we've also got more scalability and a similar architecture this time. Even if there are no new blockbusters for PS5, we can basically get higher modes for PS4 games on the PS5.

It's kind of scary for Xbox if this happens. If we get cross-gen games that even play on both systems, Xbox is going to become obsolete. That goes for the X and their next system. It won't even be fair.

Sony has a pretty good momentum right now regarding exclusives and console sales. It would be foolish of them to announce a PS5 this year and release it before Christmas. I think a 2019 announcemenet and a release by the end of 2019 or early 2020 would be the best move.

Highly doubtful Sony will want to cannibalize and burn good will with adopters of PS4Pro, even by holiday 2019. It would just rub many the wrong way.

Pretty safe bet on 2020 holiday for PS5.

It won't be self-destruction though. PS4 still has amazing games lined up, and I expect PS5 to be backwards compatible. Releasing PS5 this fall just means that tech-wise, Sony can compete with XBO X, but won't be stuck to PS4 specs when it comes to releasing new games that will demand more power than PS4 could handle.

If believe Sony will keep the pressure on Microsoft.

Some big releases later this year will be cross-gen, like Red Dead 2, Spider-Man, etc.

Apart from current GPU and memory prices, I don't see any major reasons why Sony would hold off from releasing it in 2018. Those who want the newest and most powerful console, will buy it, and others will still be happy with PS4 for at least 1-2 years.

@Yi-Long..The PS4 or the Pro doesn't need to compete with the X knowing the X has absolutely nothing to compete with.If the XBO had a slew of compelling high rated exclusives dropping throughout the year every year & the console was leading worldwide then Sony would have fierce competition but it doesn't.Sony can take it's sweet time releasing a next gen console knowing the PS4 still has a lot more to give far as upcoming exclusives.

That's not the point. All us gamers already have the PS4.

This is about those looking to buy a new console, today, and they will ask the question: Which console has the best specs, which is the newest, and will last me 4-5 more years orso.

Those aren't the people looking at the exclusives. They only care about some games like the newest FIFA, GTA, and Call of Duty. They are the parents of 12-13 year olds, buying them their first console. Not being very informed about the market. The folks who would buy the newest iPhone or iPad, because it's a big brand name, it's the most expensive, and it's the newest. They don't really care about what it can and can't do compared to the competition. They just want the newest and best phone, and price and hype indicates (to them) newest iPhone/iPad must be best.

Doesn't matter those informed know that is not the case. These are the uninformed, who only ask for 'best' and 'newest'.

When it comes to 3rd party multi-platform releases, XBO X is currently the best machine to own, technically. Correct?

So when huge releases later this year come out, and every video and review is gonna mention it looks amazing on XBO X, while still very good in PS4 (pro), that's fine for us who own and are happy with our PS4, but those in the market for a new console, will see that as a reason to pick up XBO X over PS4 Pro.

I believe Sony wants to keep the pressure on Microsoft, hardware-wise. Staying ahead of the game wins the race. Coast on current success might lead to your downfall.

Releasing a PS5 late this year won't take anything away from PS4. It WILL take away from Microsoft, cause those now looking at the XBO X as a potential new purchase for their multi-platform needs in the best quality, could then decide to simply hold out for PS5 instead.

I don't see how this would hurt Sony. It would hurt Microsoft. And I as a consumer, simply have more choices.

The simple fact is that most of Sony's home consoles have released 6 years after their predecessor, only PS4 came 7 years after PS3 in Japan and North America, PS3 launched in mid 2007 in Europe and Australia.

The technology to provide gamer's a similar level of raw flop increase, vastly improved IPC and more than sufficient additional CPU and RAM already exists in the PC market.

Despite PS2 still selling like hotcakes and PS3 selling well Sony never felt the need to drag those generations on for more than 7 years, although PS4's delayed release was down to a shift to X86, from PowerPC.

PS5 will no doubt use AMD CPU & GPU tech and if GDDR6 is already in mass production by Samsung, but GDDR5 is also still widely available and for pretty cheap now.
Even the 32GBs of R6 memory isn't out if the question given that Sony would be buying in bulk from a vendor and Samsung has 2GB chips available. Sony could just use a similar clamshell configuration to PS4's setup.
16GBs may cut it for next gen, if speeds are good enough.

A 4 to 8 core Zen CPU, with 8 to 16 threads, paired with either a 56 or 64CU GPU that hits 10 to 14tflops.
A modded Ryzen 5 2400g, paired with a Vega 56, that also has Navi mods would be possible for Fall 2019 release at £349/$399.

With a hybrid 2tb drive and a 4K Blu-ray player and built in VR tech.
