Fortnite PS4 Pro (1080p) vs. Xbox One X (4K) Comparison: Big Resolution Difference At 60 FPS

Fornite runs at native 1080p on the PS4 Pro when using the 30 FPS mode while the resolution switches to dynamic 1080p when running at 60 FPS. Xbox One X runs at full 4K in 30 FPS mode and the resolution can drop to dynamic 4K during 60 FPS mode, but it is still leagues above the PS4 Pro version in term of visual fidelity.

No reasonable person has stopped paying attention to how much all that power doesn't matter when you are releasing games that make your console standout from all the other ones. TRUE 4K is little incentive to expect gamers to ignore some of the greatest gaming experiences to be offered on a console. I continue to hear about PUBG, but once it's on Playstation then what? Yet another game they'll all be playing too, at a slightly lower resolution, who cares? Being able to play the game is what is most important. It would be a great accomplishment, if the community of gamers stopped trying to be better than the next person by proving that they've chosen the best form of entertaiment. Exclusives def matter, but PS fanboys blow it out proportion how important they actually are. If they dominated the sales chart month in and month out, you'd have a point and it be proven through numbers. But games like MHW, NBA 2K, GTA 5, COD and other multiplats dominate each respective consoles sales charts, so it really isn't as important to the general gamer. As for power, it def matters, it just doesn't to the casual base anymore solely because they buy their consoles based on who is gaming where and the core gaming audience made it very well known that the PS4's extra power made it the best place to play

Casuals, huh? I am very hardcore for my gaming, owning over 9,000 physical games and playing on the best Tvs the industry can offer(LG C7 Oled and Sony A1E Oled). One does not put 100s of thousands into gaming if they're casual. Furthermore, it has nothing to do with power, as with or without it the game is still able to be played. Yes 4K is clear, but it adds little to my decision of whether I'm going to play a game or not. Hell every game that is multiplat, I purchase on the PS4. Why? Because TRUE 4K is not incentive enough for me to ignore some of the best gaming experiences on the console. Furthermore, Sony does a great job at presenting opportunities to experience something new and different, and any hardcore gamer will be excited for that. I will support them wholeheartedly, because I want them to continue. Where as my Xbox suffers because I am willing to speak with my wallet, as are many others, in hopes that Microsoft will acknowledge the demand for more than Gears, Forza, and Halo.

If MS give Sony a one year headstart, then they also give them the victory. The PS3, even though it was released one year later, managed to catch up and outsell the 360 in the end because Playstation has worldwide appeal.

If the next Xbox launch 1 year later, they don't have worldwide appeal and they barely matter in USA anymore. It would be simply impossible for the Xbox brand, which is too insignificant, to catch up to Sony that will have a year headstart.

Also, you seem to think the PS5 and X2 will be like the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. You xbox fanboys don't seem to have realized that Sony aren't stupid like Microsoft. They realized midgen upgrades didn't matter that much, so they went cheap to make a little more money. Meanwhile, Microsoft blew their entire load on a console that they're likely selling at a loss for a midgen upgrade that won't matter.

Meanwhile, you can be sure Sony won't do the same with the PS5, since it's a new generation, they won't do like they did with the PS4 Pro. Even if Microsoft release their console 1 year later, the difference in power will be much smaller and it will likely be more expensive because they are terrible with hardware and can't make one at a decent price. So in the end, Sony will get all the third party support because they will have more consoles out there and the difference in power will be too small.

You know, never being a fan of these comparison videos, it jars me with just how much people truly pretend that clarity is such a large factor in gameplay. Fortnite is a fun game whether in 1080 or 4K, so why are all these people truly debating about whether to wear glasses or not? The difference is not that noticeable once you really get into playing the title. There are far too many Indie titles taking home the gold, for anyone to be arguing over which game is clearer.

I guess I can understand, if you don't have the ability to own them all, to want to validate your choice as the best. Overall, it's all subjective since all of us play games for different reasons. The games are very important. If you can play the games with better performance, shouldn’t that be somewhat relevant? I bought 4K TV’s and built a very competent 4K gaming PC. I also bought an Xbox One X to use on my 4K gaming TV. Why are so many people suddenly claiming 1080p is better? I didn’t upgrade my PS4 to a Pro since the upgrade doesn’t seem justified with game support being so much less for 4K gaming. No one said what was better, but clarity holds little value in the overall experience. 4K is fine, but not in any way necessary. If that's the case, people would be ignoring the PS4, Switch, 3DS, etc but we all know that's not happening. Nor would I be willing to ignore games that set the console a part for a clearer picture. Third party games are fine, but do absolutely nothing to make a product stand out. People support Netflix, HBO, Showtime, Apple, Android, Sony, Nintendo, etc for what they hold exclusively. Why do you think they all put so much emphasis on creating content for their company, because it makes them stand apart. Stranger Things. Game of Thrones. God of War, are all household names that add to the brand of the company. Kribwalker, there is nothing that I don't afford myself and the X sits because it doesn't offer much unique outside of clarity. I have top level TVs because they are future based products that don't need upgraded every year.

LG panels have the same Picture quality from the C series to the W series. Sony has the best processing in the industry, with production houses that create content only their TVs can decode. Couple that with ground breaking sound tech and you will always have a winner. Having 3-6,000.00 TVs does not keep me from exploring my absolute love for Indie titles. Overall I love unique experiences not just power and graphics. My hardcore is a love of the industry and ALL that it's creators have to offer. My X sits, not because it's not more powerful than the PS4 Pro, but because the PS4 continues to create new reasons for me to turn it on. My 3DS is not 4K, nor my Vita, Switch or otherwise but I play them too. Why? Unique experiences.

Game isn't optimized for the Pro. Hasn't been, even before the Xbox One X got its update patch last year. Wasn't then and wasn't now. Since epic is such a great Dev I don't know why they're doing this.
And before you say that it is taking full advantage, just hold up. Right now, the PS4 Pro and base PS4 versions are basically identical. That doesn't make sense since the Pro is 2.3 times as powerful. They just won't let the dynamic resolution go over 1080p for some reason.

Both statements you made are true but the doesn't have anything to do with the resolution. The CPU isn't linked to resolution, that's the GPUs job. That's why you don't see many games that can run at 60fps on the enhanced consoles, but only 30fps on the base consoles, they're CPU bound.
This isn't the case in fortnite right now. Both the PS4 and Pro run the game at 60fps fine. The issue is that even with a 30fps cap, the resolution STILL won't go above 1080p on Pro, because that's the upper limit of the resolution slider. I imagine going above a 1080p output requires some minimal effort since you're now in a different display mode (UHD).
Basically what I'm saying is, the game uses a dynamic resolution. On all other systems, capping the framerate at 30 leads to higher average pixel counts (such as on the Xbox One X). This isn't the case on Pro because it's not optimized for it. The game is GPU bound, meaning it should go up to around 1440p at 30fps, right? But it doesn't. Because in any mode, the resolution is capped at 1080p for no reason.

That would make sense in terms of draw distances/texture resolutions and such. But rendering resolution is mostly just raw GPU power, it's rendering the same assets at the same quality (of the assets), only the frame buffer is being rendered differently. VRAM IS very important for those super crisp textures tho, hence why the Xbox One X uses ultra textures in a lot of cases (the 12GB vs 9GB of ram on the PS4 Pro).

When you play at a higher resolution it's the small details that become a little more apparent. I played a lot of Destiny 2 on a Pro before the patch had released, I downloaded the Trial on a One X after the One X patch had released. Let me tell you, that hawk has some pretty good looking feathers not seeing aliasing on fine details like foliage, distant characters or buildings can go a long way.

MS did better job in figuring out all the bottlenecks than Sony with Pro. Great job EPIC and MS! In terms of power, Pro is profiling itself like 1440-1800p machine whereas X 1800-2160p machine. Its really great achievment in both camps considering both machines have only old Jaguar arch CPU with moderate frequency. Im curious how both companies will spec their next gen machines!

Butterfly effect has nothing to do with it. Pro has different GPU than base model. It has new features from new Vega architecture, whereas original PS4 GPU is very old 7950 radeon gpu. You are right, half of CUs are turned off in base mode. But thats for compatibility reasons. XOX has newer GPU but not that much. It also derives from Vega (whereas Pro is derived more from Polaris - but like AMD said, Polaris and Vega is term of feature set not architecture generation). XOX has more CUs (42 vs 36) and higher frequency(1172 vs 911)....and thats it. If you simply do the math you get that 6TF. So GPUs in Pro and XOX are very similar.

With bottlenecks I meant different thing. XOX has special SoC for DX12 calls handling, so it eases of CPU. So if you consider XOX has higher clocked CPU (2,4 vs 2,1 in Pro) and uses it more effectively, thats another great boost for platform.

Yeah, Mark Cerny said that, I read lot of articles. But he commented only on number of CUs. If you do some research you will find, that PS4 GPU is ald GCN1.0 arch with DX11.1 support whereas Pro GPU is GCN4.0 arch with DX12 support. So Pro really has new GPU just like XOX.

In different articles there were different quotes from Cerny. Its also possible AMD redesigned old 7950 for 14nm process, added new features and build new custom chip for Sony. But for me ts not likely.

One other difference between XOX and Pro I see is, that XOX can do better scaling between different version of HW. Its evident Sony was freaking out about compatibility. They had problems with boosting base versions of games. That also has lot of to do with APIs, that are used on both consoles. Sony seems to use tighter one which is more hardware dependent.

MS doesnt have problems with GPU compatibility. And thats also the reason, it could do backward compatibility program. Of course bc with ps3 is much more complicated due to CELL processor -1main core and 7 compute cores, while x360 had same processor but only 3 main cores.

A mediocre game—at least, according to the Metacritic rating—that looks better is akin to having a high resolution shot of a pile of cow feces. I'd much rather have a system with consistently high quality exclusives—because I play video games, not pixel fidelity.

Besides, in another two years—give or take a few months—Sony will reclaim most visually stunning game console. A title it will maintain likely for years since it's unlikely Microsoft will release a next generation console until 'twenty-two.
