Shadow of the Colossus Remaster review: Your Memory is Wrong | EliteGamer

Visually, it's a remarkable upgrade from the original PS2 version as well as the supposed HD remaster that released on PS3. But it still feels like a PS2 game and certainly plays like one.

"I played SotC on a standard PS4 so the performance is capped at 1080p and 30fps. It’s disappointing when you consider much more recent games that have been ported to the PS4 have achieved 1080p with 60fps with ease on a base PS4."

Uhm, maybe because this isn't a port but a full fledged remake?

Telford912295d ago

They used code from the PS2 original so I wouldn't call it a "fully fledged remake" like FF7 will be.

UCForce2295d ago (Edited 2295d ago )

Final Fantasy 7 Remake ? I can’t say it’s a remake, because the gameplay has changed from what I saw. More importantly, FF 7 remake combat is like a reboot ish. Shadow of the Colossus is definitely a remake, because it using new engine from ground up. But it have to stay art style from original game. Bluepoint nailed it.

AspiringProGenji2295d ago

They had to make the game stay as true as the original, so using the same code makes sense. However the assets were all remade from the ground, so that is a remake.

kevnb2295d ago (Edited 2295d ago )

Its a whole new engine and new code, they might have been able to put some of the old code in but I would imagine that would be minimal. Ive seen the pr statement, but you also have to remember pr folks often mix things up. The FF7 "remake" looks more like an abomination with final fantasy 7s story tacked on.

Jinger2295d ago

FF7 is almost like a reboot or refresh of that game considering all the aspects they're changing like the combat and such.

Pancit_Canton2295d ago

Nope. Bluepoint used the asset as a reference only, but everything is built from ground up to their new game engine. Coding doesn't work like that, you can't just copy paste and expect it to work right away It has to be compatible with the system and game engine.

UnHoly_One2295d ago

Why does anyone care what it's called?

REmake, REmaster, REwhogivesacrap?

It was a great game and now it looks 10x more awesome.

Why does everyone on this website insist on arguing about pointless crap that has no bearing on anything?

Darkwatchman2295d ago

Completely remade assets in every single instance with no stone unturned don’t count as a remake??? Okay, guy. You clearly aren’t in the business of reviewing games professionally if you believe this is a simple remaster.

vladstad2295d ago

so does that mean that you dont think each new elder scrolls game or fallout is a new game since they are using basically the same engine as 10 years ago?

ps yes i know they have rewritten parts of their engine.

kowan2295d ago

It's a remake. They used code from the Ps2 as basis but it's not the same in this game. You can't use the exact same code when you're changing the controls, the assets, the sounds and all. Also, the article already lost credibility when it mentioned that the game was "ported" to the Ps4. How could someone even say that when there's footage everywhere, and not to mention the reviewer already played the game.

2295d ago
SCW19822295d ago

No they didn't. Its built from scratch.

darthv722295d ago

Bluepoint did the HD remaster of this a few years ago. This game essentially takes that one and rebuilds it from scratch. some assets were used while majority of others were rebuilt with the PS4 in mind.

Think of it like a remake of the remaster and both were keeping true to the original formula.

Aceman182295d ago

This game was a classic then, and it is now. The author must have sucked at the game lol

mad-dog2295d ago

It seems people just don't want you to be right.
Here is a great interview: https://www.youtube.com/wat...
At around 14 minutes they talk about the code.

yellowgerbil2295d ago

You realize every Madden game since like 1992 have reused some of the same code too. Is Madden 18 a port of Madden 94?

MWH2295d ago (Edited 2295d ago )

you don't know what you're talking about but it's never late to be wise.

Edito2294d ago

@Telford91 You clearly need to get your facts straight and do some research.

The clickbait is strong with this one... this guy clearly sucks at the game and is looking for reasons to complain.

DialgaMarine2295d ago

If someone is going to bitch about the graphical settings of a PS4 exclusive, they should buy a damn PS4 Pro. What a moron this dingleberry is.

Rhythmattic2294d ago

Dingleberry & Dangleberry..... words I have not had the opportunity to use in a long time...
Thanks for the memories!

Wolf8732295d ago

Although the game is made anew, it still looks like a enhanced PS3 game graphics wise, so it makes me wonder if 60 fps could actually have been achieved. Fps doesn't matter to me personally but seeing the final product and fps cap had me wondering why's that the case.

Wolf8732294d ago (Edited 2294d ago )

@MakoD
My eyes are just fine perhaps yours are blinded by sheer bias, but it doesn't matter, I checked HD videos and that's how it is. There are other PS4 games that look exceedingly more current gen than this. I don't own a pro nor plan to, will get next gen PS. And for your kind information, next time don't be so rude when I hadn't made a rude comment to begin with.

Wolf8732294d ago

@makoD
Mate, your idea of helping is to be condescending and rude when my initial comment was inquisitive. It seems like this site is overrun by immature people based on what I'm seeing here. Honestly, check your vision I wrote I *do not* own a pro nor want to. And I said what I said, graphics look like enhanced ps3 visuals (e.g. UC4 and MGS5 look current gen)...you don't need to take it so personally unless the game is your baby.

there's always that one guy...

SuperSonic912295d ago

PlayStation exclusives are often abised by unknown or obscure gaming websites to get clicks and hits. Even big sites like IGN and Gamespot use this opportunities for their business.
Thos is why I go by my own instinct for a games quality.

IMissJimRyan2295d ago

You know that there's something wrong when the author comes to comments.

mastershredder2295d ago (Edited 2295d ago )

That’s what “elite gamers” do. I don’t know which one makes me cringe more. The title of the site or the actions of trying to govern and muzzel comments on a site that is not their own. Really f-ing lame biz right there, but at least only the elite of the dingleberry sites tend to do this. Who else would have time to monitor comments on a site where the source of their information is not hosted?!?!?! Amature as f.

Bathyj2295d ago

That's such a turn off. Credibility out the window.

Araragifeels 2295d ago (Edited 2295d ago )

You know there something wrong when everyone start to disagree with OP comment and responding back with facts while OP stay in silent and start disliking everyone.

Cryptcuzz2294d ago

One more site to not visit. When you see the known sites give this game rave reviews and then an unknown website come out shortly after with low scores, that is classic clickbait at its finest.

Jinger2295d ago

Well considering I absolutely love the original... I can't imagine I'd be disappointed with a version that looks so beautiful.

Omnisonne2295d ago

Yup, an improvement on every aspect as far as I'm concerned.

The review was fair, I'm sure the game starts to show some age control-wise, each to his own. But to say as author that people's memories of the game are wrong based on your unmet expectations is frankly retarded..
Also to the author, if the game gets tedious or monotonous, just put it down for a few days.

Hardiman2295d ago

Well there are several control settings Andy most have applauded the options and it runs at 60fpfs on the Pro.

Daman Shelley from NoobFeed writes - Dragon's Dogma is truly a one-of-a-kind game, and there really is no other game like it, but there are a few that come close. gold_drake119d ago

cant wait for it, feb and march are busy busy months ha.

SovereignSnaKe119d ago

I can still hear the title screen music in my head after nearly 12 years. Loved every minute of it.

MrNinosan119d ago

I have no issues filling my time til DD2.
Granblue Fantasy: Relink, Infinite Wealth and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth will probably me more than enough.
More terrified I won't be done in time.

DivineHand125119d ago

Try not to burn yourself out before the game releases. This is going to be a long and immersive RPG like the first one.

The games in this article are all great and I believe the people who are excited for Dragons Dogma 2 probably already played most of those games.

For now, I recommend you prepare yourself for long play sessions if you will be picking up Dragons Dogma at launch.
