Capcom is Still Confused About What to do With Resident Evil (Discussion)

"Andrew and I chat about our disappointment in the highly anticipated Resident Evil 7 “Not a Hero” DLC. While we do think the downloadable content itself is decent, our main gripes are the ‘new’ Chris Redfield and the lack of story details and tie-ins to the previous 7 mainline games in the Resident Evil series." -- PlayStation Enthusiast

Right after Resident Evil 3 they seemed confused. Veronica and Zero weren't bad titles, a tie for me, but it was after Mikami's split from Capcom after delivering a terrific 4th outing that the series seemed more lost than confused, for me anyway.‎

I’m making over $17k a month working part time. I kept hearing other people tell me how much money they can make online so I decided to look into it. Well, it was all true and has totally changed my life. This is where i started>>> http://tiny.cc/ww3opy

Can you please just shut up. No one believes you.

CoryHG2294d ago

I do and it worked for me too!

Arguably Resident Evil 4 created this identity crisis.

strayanalog2294d ago (Edited 2294d ago )

I can see your point, so arguably, that's true. But I think laziness is more of a deciding factor.‎

In my opinion, the subsequent sequels only proved that Capcom could stroke a fire, not make one, thus making watered-down versions of Resident Evil 4 for the next two outings. I applaud them for using some of the original Resident Evil development team, but the developer didn't attempt to push anything in the franchise forward with 5 and 6.
They actually allowed it to become stagnate, mistreating characters, crazy storylines, and worst of all, went against the franchise's own foundation: horror.
Action doesn't last longer than horror, simply put. An explosion is pretty but it lasts a second, but give someone something to be scared of then that lasts for hours, years even.‎ People love to be scared, but there wasn't anything scary about RE 5 or 6.‎

The 7th outing, though better than its last two predecessors if we want to call it an RE game, doesn't truly feel like Resident Evil. It's a shell of a game (no first person camera argument here), hollowed out to masquerade as a Resident Evil game, but feeling like a rip off of PT because of its popularity. Capcom, again, being lazy with no connecting story with only the title to prove what franchise it belongs to.
If Capcom wants to make Resident Evil an anthology series then - sure - I'm okay with Capcom masking its identity crisis by not following the main story, but they shouldn't attempt to staple it together with the main franchise with DLC.‎

When you have a creator who was as hands on with the entire franchise as Mikami was (producing or directing the entire main line), then it's no wonder his absence is felt with each passing sequel. The series just doesn't know what to do with itself with no true lead and Capcom is obviously their own worse enemy - resident evil indeed.

It's obvious it started out as a new game or something they later in development turned into Resident Evil to sell more copies. The lack of story tying it to the previous games and the like shows that.

Even a spin off like Outbreak ties into the overall story

What would you do if RE 2 Make is not Fix Camera or play like Classic ?

Hardiman2295d ago

Well for me part 7 was a step in the right direction! I liked how there wasn't a lot of familiarity with what was taking place till close to the end.

To me I'd like more intimate self contained stories in the RE universe as opposed to the last few globe trotting well trained well equipped protagonists.

Resident evil with a mall and labs and a full city

on_line_forever2295d ago

I saw a video for the developers of resident evil 7 they really don't know what resident evil is all about they don't know how to make resident evil game like shinji mikami did

If capcom really want to bring resident evil to life again they need to bring shinji mikami on the head of the team developments

NecrumOddBoy2295d ago (Edited 2295d ago )

Evil Within was an identity crisis to be honest. RE7 was a rebranding of the series. It had everything in it that makes an RE game. They did screw up with the DLC and the ending

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)

“Survival horror and VR go well together” - Producer Hints possible VR Version for the RE Series

In a very recent development, Capcom has announced that the VR mode for the “Resident Evil 4” remake is scheduled to be added on the 8th of December as an update and will support the full main story campaign, offering an unprecedented gaming experience to its users. However, RE Series fans have another reason to rejoice as there is a possibility that RE Series might get a VR Version in the future.

This I would welcomed, haven’t replayed any of the older games since released years ago. VR would definitely get me to replay them all again. Make it happen Capcom.

MrBaskerville145d ago

Psvr2 version of Re7 and Re2Remake would be fire.

Tacoboto145d ago

Capcom porting anything to SteamVR would be fire.

Petebloodyonion145d ago

You can already play RE 2-3-7-8 on PC via VR mods (Praydog) they offer hand-tracking movement (like PSVR2 Village) and full VR cutscenes.
THE RE7 mod is better compared to the old PSVR version due to hand tracking.

Modding != Official Support

Petebloodyonion145d ago

"Modding != Official Support"
And?
You can still play it in VR and worse it shows that this is far from a complicated feat requiring a full studio with tons of money since it's been done by 1 guy working on this mod from time to time.
So basically this could have been done by Capom a long time ago.

And again You should try (it's pretty easy to install) for Res7 for It's improved even on the PSVR version of the game.

Vanfernal145d ago

Spencer Mansion in VR would be AMAZING. That is my favorite video game setting of all time.
