If Doom is on Switch, What Other AAA Games Can We Expect?

Arguments like “Switch is too weak to run AAA third party games” don't fly anymore. If DOOM can run on Switch, why can't other AAA games? And what are the chances of these games coming to Nintendo's system?

"Arguments like “Switch is too weak to run AAA third party games” don't fly anymore."

Actually, they do. According to everything I'm reading the Switch version is running 720p and 30fps...nearly half the frame rate and resolution of the PS4 version.

The Switch is too weak to run AAA third party games...it's just in luck that DOOM was already well optimized and DESIGNED to not be hard to run (hence the 1080/60 on PS4).

That and we have to keep in mind things like RAM and CPU speed in the Switch as well. Fortunately, DOOM isn't processor intensive or uses GPU physics and the like or else the Switch wouldn't stand a chance.

No, games like this are an exception to the rule.

bluefox7552407d ago

DF said the same thing, Doom is kind of a special exception because of the scalability of the id tech 6 engine. I don't see many other AAA games coming to Switch.

OoglyBoogly2407d ago

Apparently Digital Freakin' Foundry don't know anything according to the downvoters.

So you're just going to ignore the fact that the Switch already has NBA 2K18, FIFA, and Dragonball Xenoverse 2? Not including the fact that WWE 2K18, L.A. Noire, Skyrim, Wolfenstein 2 along with Doom are also coming to the Switch within the next few months, not counting first party titles. This is all within less than a year of the Switch launching. Lets not forget with all the sales reports coming out for the Switch along with 2 of highest rated games this generation within months of each other is going to draw a lot of attention from investors. More investors, more money and support, more games.

These dev's work is not "luck"..

..this is a complex game running great on a machine the size of an Archie comic..

OoglyBoogly2407d ago

No, you're right, it's not luck...it's design.

The game, again, was designed to be easy to run. The game's resolution and framerate being cut in half is what makes it run on the Switch.

That was the point.

Shiken2407d ago

So what is your excuse for Wolfenstein 2 then?

I think most games that run at 1080p 60 fps on ps4 and xbox could be expected to be scaled down for switch at 720p and 30 fps, but you aren't going to see the witcher 3 on this thing anytime soon.

OoglyBoogly2405d ago

Exactly. People obviously just don't understand this.

And yeah, most games that do run at 1080p and 60fps could probably be scaled down for the Switch. Problem is that most games are 1080p and only 30fps...meaning that they'd have to make more compromises.

Witcher 3, portable. Make it happen.

UKRsoldja2406d ago

I guess if you want 480p/20fps...

Darkstryder3602406d ago

Why so pessimistic. Dream big.

Prince_TFK2407d ago (Edited 2407d ago )

Realistically, AAA games that can be run on the Switch that I expect to come out somedays are:

GTA V
South Park Fractured But Whole
Dark Soul 3
Resident Evil 7
The Evil Within 2
Fallout 4
Overwatch

Hopefully more will follow as well.

vergilxx32407d ago

Probaly not but there are a lot of rumors that it is coming to switch

bluefox7552407d ago

According to DF, this isn't going to be a common occurrence. Doom is kind of a special exception because of the scalability of id tech 6. They tested it, and it's amazing how low of hardware it'll run on PC. They matched Switch hardware as closely as possible, and it actually ran on the test PC. Pretty impressive, though they also stated they don't expect it too happen very often with other games.

Prince_TFK2407d ago (Edited 2407d ago )

That doesn't explain how other games such as Wolfenstein 2, LA Noire, Payday 2, WWE2K18, and to a lesser extend Rocket League and Steep would run on the Switch.

OoglyBoogly2407d ago (Edited 2407d ago )

Sure it does. LA Noire and Payday 2 are last-gen games...so I hope the Switch could run them.

Rocket League runs on anything.

The other games are just due to not being that demanding to begin with. Steep is all snow and more basic geometry, Wolfenstein is the same way.

With WWE2K18 do we know the specs the game is running at? Are the crowd sizes the same as the X1/PS4?

I mean, it's not like it's IMPOSSIBLE for the Switch to run current gen games...but with what compromises? How easy are the games to run already? You think the Switch is getting and upcoming AAA games that are actually graphically demanding?

And don't get me wrong, not hating or anything here, I just like talking tech (something people get offended by). But to be realistic people the Switch is a cut down Nvidia Tegra X1...it's been proven. The Tegra X1 is not a powerhouse by any means. The Switch has two 1GHz processors and 256 CUDA cores. I'm surprised it's been able to do what it can do...

GamingCentaur2407d ago

None of those are graphically intensive. Wolfenstein is running on the same engine as DOOM.
