Postmortem: Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

At the end of 2004, some of the developers at Naughty Dog (Jak and Daxter, Crash Bandicoot), began work on the studio's first-ever game for the PlayStation 3.

Cryptically assigned the working title Big, the project would prove to be Naughty Dog's biggest and most complex game yet. This postmortem discusses some of the things that Naughty Dogs struggled with, some of their successes and failures, and what they plan to do differently next time.

That's pretty cool to get a chance to see what Naughty Dog was thinking as they developed the game and to get a take on what they thought worked really well and those things that didn't work so well.

Naughty Dog is a great developer and I pretty much can guarantee that Uncharted 2 is going to be a blockbuster.

I also thought this was very interesting in their discussion about the graphics:

"As we'd done for previous Naughty Dog projects, we used multiple rendering engines at once, which we wrote specially to handle different parts of the game world.

Two of the major systems rendered our geometry and a third did water, while other renderers took care of particles, decals, and the HUD. All of these were very heavily optimized for the PlayStation 3 hardware, using the console's SPUs in some cases to supercharge the RSX graphics processor."

I'm not an expert by any means, but I think they pretty much pulled off what they were trying to do with the visuals of the game!

Yea definitely, alot of real great behind the scenes info to how a beloved developer made an absolutely killer game. I have so much respect for Naughty Dog, ive loved every one of their games from the very beginning of Crash Bandicoot. And it sounds like the development for Uncharted 2 will go much smoother now that they are very well established on the PS3 architecture, hope to hear more soon!

They are amazingly skilled, proficient at making not only great looking games that showcase the current technology at that point in time, but also excel at character development and story layout.

Seriously, there aren't many development studios nowadays that can pull all that off like Naughty Dog can, and so effortlessly, too. The funny thing is, they develop for the Playstation architecture because they like to, and because they enjoy the support that Sony sends them. You see, you put out quality results, and companies stand up and take notice...

Unlike Gears of War 1.5

Naughty Dog; they know they have a lot to improve upon on- regarding controls, animations, story, and graphics.

Pennywise5705d ago

UC2 is easily tops off my most anticipated sequels coming up. But then again, there are A LOT of good games coming.

FantasyStar5705d ago (Edited 5705d ago )

Geow1.5 will still be a good game. Unlike the Halo2.5 argument, I already fell in love with GeoW1, they're just adding more on top of what I like.

As for Uncharted, I felt everything about that game was perfect already. If they can improve the rain effects, then I will be one happy camper. The gameplay could use a tweak, but Im' not all concerned about that. Uncharted Co-op would definitely make me happy. But as long as Uncharted brings me no-loading times AND keeps my HDD space untouched, I will definitely buy the 2nd installment 1st day. ND has already proven themselves to me with their games: I used to play Crash Bandicoot ya know..

PimpHandStrong5705d ago

i never played Sly or Rachet but this game was a total winner

i look 4ward to #2

You should pick up R&C Tools of destruction on rental. I had a blast with it. Insomniac are some diversified devs... love them!

buckethead_X5705d ago

Rent R&C as soon as you can; it's freakin' awesome. I've always loved R&C games, but this is definitely one of the best. The visual effects are great, the framerate is fantastic, and the gameplay and weapons are amazing. Insomniac is my favorite dev for sure.

REPLOID245705d ago

these guys had to get their tech in gear to produce this game and basically start from scratch with ps3. despite all the trouble they went through on planning/production, they made the ps3 their biotch. it really is a great game that speaks volumes of Naughty Dog. I can't wait for what they do next so they can raise the bar once more. whoever says the ps3 isn't a gaming machine, talk to ND.

The Inconsistent Harmony: 5 Examples of Ludonarrative Dissonance in Video Games

VGChartz's Issa Maki: "I finally have a proper designation akin to what I've always referred to internally as 'the line that must be crossed' or 'The Line', for short – ludonarrative dissonance – the separation from a video game's story in relation to its gameplay. Why isn't PETA all up in Mario's grill for jumping on turtles and killing fish, or charging Samus Aran with the extinction of the Metroid species? Ever notice how fire has that habit of making bosses in Resident Evil stronger? Read on my friend, for I endeavor to imbue you with the ability to engage in basic queries concerning the concept."

UC 2, 4, 3 and 1. Great read and article

ABizzel11030d ago

No Golden Abyss -_-, otherwise I agree with the order.

UC2: Best overall
UC4: Best graphics, best gameplay, best locations, best environements
UC3: Best set pieces IMO (the boat and desert fights will always be amazing)
UC1: A rough Draft of what was to come
UCGA: Basically UC1 on Vita

Levii_921030d ago (Edited 1030d ago )

Great list and great article nicely writen and explained. Although for me personaly i would put Drakes Fortune above Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4 is absolutely my favourite of the franchise and number 1 for me.

Inverno1030d ago

U2 is the only game playable on crushing without causing a great amount of frustration. Not to mention just how much influence it had that they redid some of U2s set pieces like the caravan twice, and armored truck chase in U4.

DFresh1030d ago (Edited 1030d ago )

I'd rate it as the following.

1.) Uncharted 2
(Close to perfection of any game I've played in years. Single Player/Multiplayer/Co Op all amazing.)

2.) Uncharted 3
(On par with UC2 multiplayer/co op wise minus the kickbacks [aka killstreaks]. I really liked the Lawrence of Arabia story.)

3.) Uncharted 4
(Single player is amazing. Multiplayer was meh. Co Op had potential. Absolutely hated the health revive system it slowed down the game way too much. Always preferred the fast pace action of UC2/UC3. Made it way more fun that way. Recoil was too ridiculous that most people in lobbies would only do hip firing, using power weapons and using that OP grappling hook to melee people after dropping them. Nobody wanted to revive anyone.)

4.) Uncharted
(It's the first in the series so it's hard to judge. Though I loved the story.)

NecrumOddBoy1030d ago

I agree here but it’s also a series you can play from front to back and truly enjoy. Story-wise, they are all great and flow so well. I wish they threw both Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy on this list. Lost Legacy is the best mechanically in my opinion. You can see it’s stepping stone framework for TLOUS2.

Michiel19891030d ago

uncharted 2 is one of the few games that actually surpassed its pre-release hype.

medman1030d ago (Edited 1030d ago )

I am a single player gamer...I barely ever touch a multiplayer component. The only exceptions over the years have been the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, TLOU factions, and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. The Uncharted 2 multiplayer saw me spend more time playing it than all my other multiplayer experiences over the years combined. That game really was a masterpiece all around.

brando0081029d ago

I agree completely, those are all stellar MP experiences, coming from another SP gamer who only occasionally gives MP some time.

Gardenia1030d ago

Come to think of it, the step between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 is huge. It goes from the weakest in the series to one of the best games ever made.
I think I'm going to play all of them again soon.

Ninver1030d ago

Yeah all of a sudden I've got that Uncharted itch.

Michiel19891030d ago

is multiplayer still up for the remastered trilogy? or did it never have UC2 mp?

Ninver1029d ago

@michiel1989

Not sure
