Wolfenstein 2 Designer Explains Why The Single-Player FPS Is Dying

From GameWatcher: "Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus is out October 27 and we're very excited, but as huge fans of the single-player story-based FPS, it hasn't escaped our notice that very few of them are being released these days, and most of them are from Bethesda. It didn't seem a long time ago that there were dozens of them, now they're rare. A little while ago we checked in with MachineGames Senior Games Designer Arcade Berg and he told us his opinion on why offline story-focused shooters are drying up."

Cant make extra money of single player, multiplayer now has MT.

ninsigma2394d ago

You can though. Tiered pricing as we have seen become a thing I think is a good idea. For those who just want the base game and that's it you have the standard price and those that what the extras can pay more. Unfortunately, as with everything, that can be abused too, where the base version of games could start to become smaller and smaller.

UltraNova2394d ago

Nah...in devs mind SP stands for Single Payment as well as Single Player. So yeah no wonder some of the them (want to) beleive SP is dying in favour of MP (which stands for More payments instead of...you get the point).

Some times things are not that complicated.

Chaosdreams2393d ago

@vegasgamerdawg

I learned a long time ago that those who's opinion are filled with insults and angst, often don't know the facts themselves.

If you really want to use a term such as "snowflake" as an insult, then you might as well stamp "Trump supporter" on your forehead.

We know how, uh, informed, those people are.

:)

Realms2393d ago (Edited 2393d ago )

@vegasgamerdawg

Yeah tell that to Activision with the new patent designed to force players to use MT. Big corporations do not care if they destroy an industry some people are too young to understand that the video game industry crashed due to lack of quality control this is starting to happen again because companies are forcing MT into games. Essentially double dipping into consumers pockets. The video game industry crashed before because consumers lost faith that companies would put a good product in market, and it seems like more and more big publishers are enamored with the idea that all games should have MT even at the cost of a games design. It's not complicated it's just plain greed.

abstractel2393d ago (Edited 2393d ago )

So Doom didn't make a lot of money? (sarcasm)

Let's see how well Wolfenstein 2 does, I bet it will do a lot better than the first one.

I've seen "death to [insert genre here]" more times than I can remember. Mobile gaming didn't destroy console gaming, death of triple A games hasn't happened, single player games are still successful and will still exist because the market is dictated by what people want, not what developers/publishers want.

We'll see how Assassin's Creed III, Wolfenstein 2, God of War, Detroit, Far Cry 5, Need for Speed Payback, Super Mario Odyssey, Last of Us 2, etc. do... I bet they'll do very well and make plenty of money.

sinspirit2393d ago (Edited 2393d ago )

@vegasgamerdawg

Tell us which games aren't making enough money without MT.

Development has gotten easier compared to last generation. Development tools are better, system architecture is better, porting is far easier, and optimization requires far less time. Not to mention there are better and more affordable game engines to chose from for any studio to more easily begin development. On top of the easier development.. The attach rate to consoles has risen again. Games are selling very well whether they use MT's or not.

Try having an actual argument. The studios harping about MT's being necessary make enough money without them, spend huge budgets on studios that develop average or lacking titles with marketing campaigns that are half the cost, and lack the imagination to create unique titles and content but sure can come up with creative ways to make extra money. If these studios die or end up relying on MT's it's not because the industry needs them. It's just the survival of the fittest and their core games aren't holding up anymore.

Doesn't the new Modor game have Mt?

Rachel_Alucard2393d ago

Yeah and it's the worst and laziest way of getting people to make multiple payments. The loot box system doesn't work for single player games and they need to create something new designed for that type of game

yomfweeee2393d ago

I would 100% disagree with the Mordor hater. It is 100% the best way to do MT, because they are 100% optional and aren't needed at all to complete the game.

fiveby92393d ago

Yep Shadow of War has MT's to fleece some people. Their existence alters game balance to a point where the game is less appealing. I played the first game but will avoid the second.

Cobra9512392d ago

Rachel_Alucard, I didn't downvote you, because I like your general sentiments; but I have to disagree that we need anything at all for "people to make multiple payments" in full-priced games. Nothing needs to take the place of loot boxes. They just need to go away.

Yobo52393d ago (Edited 2393d ago )

@ Vegas

I woudn't mind paying extra for a game, if it really meant getting a higher quality product. But that's not what its used for, the extra revenue goes to the publisher to satisfy shareholders & pay for marketing. Games are stripped down to upsell, and have on average shorter dev times, with more bugs and less content.
Also, you know it really bodes well for the idea that devs need to start charging $100 + some MT here or there for a complete experience, when GTA5 can make(w/ a single edition at $60) x3 its budget on release(815 M) then go on to be the highest grossing entertainment property with $1B finishing off its first week. And thats without counting Online MT for GTA Online.

robtion2394d ago

That's a shame as it's the only kind of FPS I have any interest in. MP is not for me. Bethesda does put out some of my favourite franchises lately with The Evil Within, Dishonored, and Wolfenstein. Really looking forward to Wolfenstein The New Colossus.

EatCrow2393d ago

Not sure about that.
The first halo had mp and it did not affect the sp aspect of it.
Perfect Dark had MP and it was pretty darn deep with challenges to finish as well.
Conker had MP and it was fun as hell after playing the base game.

I think MP is good for almost any game. But I do not think it is mandatory and it is definitely a place for devs to get creative in terms of modes, challenges, etc.

I do not think MT's have a place in either mp modes or sp modes though. These things are cash grabs. They dont help the design of the game in any way.

vfl5232393d ago

"The first halo had mp and it did not affect the sp aspect of it."
How do you know that? Resources, time, and effort went into the mp side of the game that could've been used on the sp side of the game. Or bungie could've pocketed the money. Again, you don't know, and may never know.

ninsigma2394d ago

TBH the market was becoming saturated with FPS games so it's not necessarily a bad thing as long as the ones that are releasing are of high quality. New Wolfenstein looks incredible. Can't wait to play.

FinalFantasyFanatic2393d ago

That's the thing I love about this gen, it's so much better balanced and we're not over saturated with shooters like we were last gen. I think we've had some great shooters this gen because there wasn't so many of them this time.

ninsigma2393d ago

Agreed. Last gen was all about open world and shooters. Lots more variety now and it's great!

Riders republic. Nice. I never bought it but played beta twice. Good fun openworld game.

BigBosss393d ago

I have 3 other mates who like playing multiplayer games. Is this something we will all enjoy together?

Astrokis393d ago

It’s a really fun game when there’s a lot of people on but the player base dropped a lot compared to launch. This should help increase the amount online drastically.

It’s definitely a - I want to chill with my friends type of game so definitely check it out! Also it’s a huge improvement over Steep

MaximusPrime_393d ago

Sounds good. Also, Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores DLC coming a day after. I'll be more likely spending time on that DLC first. But will join when free.

closed_account393d ago (Edited 393d ago )

Riders Republic is a ton of fun and one of the best things Ubisoft has done in recent years IMO.

The music and acting are obnoxious, which I just turn down... but it's so much just freeriding mountain bikes or other stuff across the mountains. I haven't played w friends, but I imagine it would be a ton of fun in MP. Very underrated game!

SlothLordPootus393d ago

I kept getting caught up in other games so I never got around to buying Doom Eternal. If it's good I'll still buy it so i can keep it. The reboot was awesome, i think i played through it about 5 times, and platinumed it.

closed_account393d ago

Same here, I've had Doom Eternal on my wishlist for a long time. I'm definitely jumping in considering the free PS5 upgrade they released.

Storm23392d ago

It is a lot of fun. First FPS in a while that has really grabbed me. And I love FPS games. C’mon Killzone/Resistance series remasters/remakes/sequels…anyt hing.

DefenderOfDoom2392d ago

I agree , Sony has not produced a single player FPS campaign in about 8 years. I already played DOOM Eternal which was awesome.

FallenAngel1984393d ago

A whole lotta Bethesda titles in this lineup

Sackboy also got included as well despite already being as Essential title

crazyCoconuts393d ago

Regarding sackboy, you're right... That's confusing. At least wait until it's not in essential, as it's impossible to have extra without essential.

Welshy393d ago (Edited 393d ago )

Damned if you do and damned if you don't with that one I think. When a former monthly free game goes into the subscription catalog at a later date it also gets criticism, so may as well just add it straight away for people who don't claim it going forward I guess.

Profchaos393d ago

Hopefully the claim on the game counts as a essentials claim so when the game leaves the catalogue it doesn't leave the players library.

I found a similar situation frustrating I played fallout 76 when it was introduced as a premium game a month or so later it was a essentials game and I could not repurchase it so I'll lose the game when it leaves the Library

crazyCoconuts393d ago

Spiderman is in the titles leaving Extra in May. Guess 1st party titles aren't guaranteed to stay

Welshy393d ago

That's just the way of subscription services in general, titles come and go, but I'm sure it'll be back. Maybe it's a Quantum Break deal where it's just a license refresh?

It's one of the reasons I fear a subscription/digital only future. I don't want the platforms telling me what I can and can't play at any given time and waiting of tenterhooks for games I actually want to be available.

closed_account393d ago

Oh boy, that's making me want to jump back into Returnal! Not that I'd mind buying the game, love it.

EvertonFC393d ago

Great Month, own most of them but looking fwd to trying monstor boy, nice sto have EW in my collection now and some wolfeinstein.

Anyone else have a small but noticeable delay in aiming on Borderlands 2? Anytime I move the aiming reticle, there is maybe a quarter of a second (250ms) delay before it moves. Happens in both Handheld and Docked.

jznrpg18d ago

I haven’t bought one shooter for Switch. It’s just to weak to play them good enough. I really don’t play my Switch at all anymore. Going to sell them and wait for Switch 2.

Scheiße! Nein.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is the best in the series. After that:
New Order
New Colossus
Old Blood

Harryvok641d ago

I really wish they'd remake Return to Castle Wolfenstein from the ground up. Easily the best of them all.
