Destructoid review: Silent Hill: Homecoming

Dick McVengeance of Destructoid writes:

Silent Hill: Homecoming was a title I've been fretting about for a while now. The much-loved franchise was being farmed out to another development team -- this time, being helmed by Double Helix Games. In addition, the game was featuring a greater focus on combat, as we could tell from the Resident Evil 4-style combat system.

Is this the end of Silent Hill as we know it? Has the series been turned into another horror game, and lost the deep plot, moody atmosphere, and all the other qualities that made the Silent Hill series what we've come to know and love?

Now follow me after the jump to hear not only what I have to say, but two of my esteemed Silent Hill-loving colleagues: Dale North and Colette Bennett.

For a great Silent hill title...probably my favorite one so far! It does deserve a 9 nothing less!

I could not get past the last gen feel. Press a button to squeeze through a fabric opening. Find the key to open a door that a malnourished midget could beat down. Ugh! I have a job to keep me busy with meaningless B.S. busy work. I'm sick of games pulling the same things. I understand it's a game and there has to be some of that in order to be a "game" but come on already. I would get disinterested in the "spooky" hometown and re-enlist.

I wholeheartedly agree with Destructoid. These guys never fail me. Silent Hill Homecoming is a fantastic game. It's up there with Silent Hill 2. Great combat, atmosphere, music, etc.

I mostly disagree with Downpour's position. Yeah, the game is not amazing by any stretch of the imagination but is much better than the HD Collection and Homecoming. The main issue is the performance, but that was mitigated by the patches, especially on the PS3. Personally, I put it a little behind Origins and The Room.

Having Restless Dreams as a different entry from Silent Hill 2 is also a choice.

Normally, we would not consider it a different game (Restless Dreams), but since it had a very different critical reception and had new content, it was allowed. As for Downpour, I would agree, but since that one is subjective, we let him make his case for the placement.

silent hill 2 is definitely the best one out of those.

for me personally, the whole ritual/cult stuff was always so weird to me in all the other games.

CrimsonWing69199d ago

No disrespect but I put SH2 over 1. 1 is fantastic, but 2 took it all up a level.

We agree, that is why the writer put it in top place!

Pyramid Head is my #1 too, despite the fact you don't actually fight him much - and the few times you do are actually super easy. It's all in the presentation & close encounters.

Auron558d ago

Pyramid head? please.. whatever was in that silent hills trailer is #1

Gardenia558d ago

I never thought the monsters themselves were very scary. It was the tension and the unknown, the silent moments that got under your skin that were the most scary to me.
Silent Hill has always been about the psychological horror more than it's gore.

I had no idea Binary Domain was backwards compatible. I know what I'm downloading.

I would like El Shaddi, Afterburner Climax, and outrun 2 please. I am sure that there are other games as well but those came to mind for me right now.
