Fans are lucky enough to have two high quality remakes of Metroid 2: the fan-+made AM2R (which has technically been taken down but is still widely available online), and the recently released Metroid: Samus Returns by Nintendo and MercurySteam on the 3DS. When AM2R released last year, it was heralded as one of the best 2D Metroid games ever designed. Meanwhile, Samus Returns is being described as a triumphant new entry in the long dormant series. But which one is better?
Nintendo will be shutting down the eShop for the 3DS and Wii U completely in 2023. Makes sure to check out these games before they do.
If they're not important enough to be held on their own official storefront then they're not important enough to give your money to Nintendo.
Buy these, physically, used or simply emulate them.
This article comes off as nothing more than advertising games that Nintendo, themselves, don't care to offer you... buy now!
Wait hang on where all the outrage? I swear when Sony tried to do this with PS3 last year. There was outrage from all corners of the gaming universe.
Why does no one care Nintendo is doing it?
It's lame that it is shutting down. Now I feel rushed buying all the rpgs I missed out on the system.
You guys know that even archive.org has 3DS roms, and all other console roms. I'm downloading 846GB of 3DS roms and will add the best games to my soon to be soft modded New 3DS 😁. Might as well throw in DS and other emulators in there to. Guys this would be the best way to play and enjoy the 3DS. Just need to buy a bigger micro SD card and format it to FAT32, which you can if it's even 256GB or larger there are ways.
The history of MercuryStream's development of Metroidvania games up to Metroid Dread.
"In a sea of games inspired by Metroid and Castlevania, only one company has ever worked on both series proper."
VGChartz's Paul Broussard: "The early-mid 2000s saw something of a golden age for Metroid games. After an eight year hiatus, Metroid burst back onto the scene in dramatic fashion. Largely buoyed by the critical and financial success of Metroid Prime (at least, relative to other Metroid releases), Metroid saw a whopping six new titles between 2002 and 2007, as well as one rather bizarre pinball spin-off that wound up being much better than it had any right to be. Metroid had never been this popular before."
Never though the day would come where I say this but I’d be fine with having every 2D Metroid remade the way Dread plays.
Actually, that's not a fair question. Most Metroid fans didn't get a chance to check it out. I know quite a few who don't even have a PC (they have mac's or tablets) to have experienced the game.
After playing am2r,I would say Nintendo's remake would have to be very good to surpass it as doc did such a bang up job. Need to get a hold of a 3DS to see though.
Samus Returns on the 3DS wins. No contest.
Played both. They are both great games. I would give the edge to SR on 3DS. It's not a straight-up remake. It's a remix with new mechanics and features. Both are worth playing.
