Calm down Lil homie...I wasn't arguing. I was just stating the facts. Just as we expect pc to have better looking versions of game's you'd do the same for xbox x. Nobody expect's the pro to have better resolution or even on par. The pro has better looking and higher profile goty lever exclusives but the xbox x will have a slightly better resolution. Even in the case off assassin's creed it's dynamic.
So relax it's not huge that the higher priced and more powerful platform has the better games.
It's not like 4 years ago when the highest costing console has the lower performance in its games. This is how it should be....now you see where your extra 100 buck's went to, no matter how small the advantage is.
My only question is will the fps hold up since all we've been hearing is 6tf,4k and 4kassets....fps are just as important. ..or even more important so I hope that holds up as well. Keep you pants on bro....relax

When the PS4 Pro was coming out, you'd hear a lot of PS4 owners saying they were gonna buy it, but there were also a lot saying they were gonna stick with the original PS4, at least for the time being. With X, it seems like every single Xbox "fan" is upgrading. This is a bit weird to me, considering that only 15% of the population has 4k TVs, yet apparently 100% of Xbox "fans" have them. But seriously let's use logic here, the reason why there was reservation with the pro is because Sony didn't really push it, and the gains from the upgrade were not necessarily seen as being that big.... Heck, you got an upgraded 4K console that can't even play 4K Blu-ray. On the other hand the X appears to be a major upgrade from it's base unit. So as you see, the goal post didn't necessarily change, your seat and depth perception did. Do you need a 4K TV to experience gains in frame rate? I think not.

Of course it's interesting to you and so many others it seems. That's because a lot of you don't like to hear any positive news about the Xbox brand and certainly don't like having the Xbox be better than the PS4 at anything. This is why the Xbox versus Playstation feud still goes on to this day.

We all know moving forward any analysis that happens which depicts the XB1X being better than the PS4 Pro is going to be met with one of the following responses. One will be to try and change the discussion to exclusives and the other will be the differences are minimal and don't matter much.

That was at the start of a generation proper, when the 1080p standard was set before the generation even began, and that XB1 was struggling with as a dedicated home console that MS was defending with nonsense things like the cloud and DX12, and having their desperate executive employees come on to NeoGAF to say "we're not losing 30% advantage to Sony". Over the years, the arguments about PS4 vs. XB1 resolution and power has applied to the most consoles sold to consumers so is more relevant a case for argument and of importance. What you are doing here is trying to use false equivalence in comparing a generation's majority sold, to a mid/end-generation upgrade that is nothing short of niche and will sell a small fraction of any console this generation, especially since its perks are not aligned with any kind of established set standard in households across the nation. In regards to exclusives, you conveniently began your agenda to downplay their importance once Microsoft announced all their games would be going to PC. You also lied about Sony downsizing their first-party studios and said nothing for a long time when Microsoft completely downsized their first-party by closing about 8 of their studios and canceling projects at once. Not really wise to take your word about exclusive games seriously now, is it? Even more so, Nintendo Switch is selling so well this year due to its amazing exclusive games lineup and the same can be said for exclusive games on PS4 this year. I appreciate that but it’s not uncommon for a multiplat game to neglect discussing the PC build, I’m sure as an N4G user you’ve seen it many, many times. At the very least it they include some form of caveat (high end, enthusiast etc).

The big studios (console being their bread and butter) tend to shy away from promising something they can’t guarantee in respect to someone with onboard GPU (or a weak system) making a fuss when the game runs like crap after labelling it the ‘best version’.

Everyone with a high end PC knows they get the best results visually (or even opt for lower settings higher FPS). Console gamers tend to need the reassurance as they lack the control/option (no offence to anyone intended).

Microsoft completely change the architecture of the Xbox one to match the one of the PS4 for the Xbox one x.... I'm not sure why everyone is expecting them to look drastically different from the Pro... It will probably look better, but in a year or two when they notice the one x hasn't sold much they won't bother pushing past the Pro unfortunately....

The PS4 and Xbox One have had the same architecture since 2013 when they released. Both use custom Jaguar APU's, a Blu-ray drive, HDD and plastic box to house them. The only thing that really separated them was the RAM they used. Windows 10 is what Microsoft wants devs to target. If they do this, they make an optimized game for PC, Xbox One and Xbox One X at the same time since the shared platform is Windows which scales across different hardware pretty easily. With PS4, games need to be upgraded and then patched for Pro support. It's not "hard", but it is more time consuming and less cost effective which is why Pro support is hit or miss. Not to mention Sony has some parity clauses that restrict what Pro can do.

Depends on the time the developer and publisher put into the different versions. Sometimes, the bare minimum is done to support the mid-gens, because that's all the console makers require, and the publishers don't want to expend resources on doing more if they don't see the real benefit.

For people saying pc should look the best. Have you considered the complexities for making a pc game vs a console game ?

Remember they have to program the game not for just amazing beastly gaming rigs but the lowest common denominator and EVERYTHING in between which is a lot. A lot of different CPUs graphics cards drivers ram types and amount of ram, operating system etc. And if that wasn't enough all the different combinations between them. Mix and match specs in pc. It's why sometimes games are terrible like batman arkham knight for example.

With the one x version they know exactly what every one x has in it and can program specifically for its strengths. And unlike PC. You Have only 2 models to cater for. Xbox one and the Xbox one x No in between to worry about!

No not really. I think the point of my comment may have been missed. Even if there is a lowest common denominator on console, the base system. There are just 2 configurations. The original console and the mid gen upgrade. Whereas on PC you have the bottom of the line performer, the top of the line performer, and everything in between.

True, but that's why PC builds don't build to hardware, but to an API like DirectX or OGL. The hardware problems come from driver incompatibility from the card makers which don't always implement certain features properly, even though the software may start using them at some point, or using them in ways that change from how the drivers were built.

But, I believe you are implying that the dev themselves can indeed have a much easier time building to a configuration, but for the most part, the base system is what the game is built to being the lowest common denominator, so the game is designed around that. The added stuff is just graphical or possibly performance improvements, and Ubisoft are not proven devs of being masterful of taking advantage of optimzing hardware.

Seems most games are getting this kind of attention nowadays, as it seems the biggest talking point about new games as opposed to actually talking about the games themselves.

What bothers me about it is that there are approximately 90 million console owners that own the stock consoles this gen, and the mid-gens are, and always will be a marginal part of that overall market.

MS said no gamer left behind, and Sony has similar policies at a core level, but now all the focus is on what the actual new consoles can do.

While I own a PS4P, and can take advantage of the extra power it provides, I'm starting to not care so much about the resolution of games, the frame rate differences between versions, or if one is slightly or much better than one on another console. I'd like to know what these games have to offer at a core level, instead of seeing all this bluster being made about things that don't matter as much to the overall quality of a game.

I was around. During resolution gate I said something similar how I got tired of all this talk about what the differences were. Eventually it died down, and until the mid-gens became a thing, we started hearing more about the games and what they had to offer in places where it actually mattered....you know, the parts about why this was a new gen in more than just a shinier coat of what we had the gen before. The resolution stupidity continued, but at least we saw more talk about the games at the top of the page than half the articles being about the differences between the two outside of the occasional day or two.

What we have now is a hell of a lot of talk which is just saying we have a shinier coat of the shinier coat of the same damn games we had last gen, and any kind of actual talk about what makes this gen worth it seems to be pushed to the back burner or completely ignored, because devs aren't pushing new game play mechanics enough, and are relying on "most beautiful graphics" to try and promote their games. Just like a new gen. It's shallow, redundant, and pretty much making it so this gen the developers don't have to try too hard, as apparently, so many people are easily impressed with something shiny.

Well the games are the games. It's the same game on PS4, pro, Xbox one, or one x. The only difference between the 4 are the graphics and performance. And even then in some cases the differences are minimal.

It's a hot topic now naturally becuase there is new hardware on the verge and people are naturally excited about new things. Lots of discussions and comparisons becuase people want to know which one they should buy.

Also, many people are multi console owners. So the comparisons and head to heads from digital foundry are of interest to help them decide which version to play. Can't blame people for wanting the best experience. Also, the comparisons are valuable for other aspects of the gameplay experience too. For example loading times.

Lastly, you can't blame gamers if there is genuine excitement around the new hardware. For a long time they've been playing games with worse performance than that offered on PC. And now with the new hardware there is a chance that some of the games they enjoy will be offered at 60 fps when they were 30 before. Or at least a stable 30 fps vs one that dips.

And if your seeing something that isn't common. As is the case here, a console version of a game looking better than the pc version. Why not discuss it? It seems noteworthy. THe conversation doesn't need to devolve into a console war argument. MS desinged what looks like a really capable gaming console. That's cool. It doesn't take away from sony's success or the PC's reputation as the place for bleeding edge graphics.

The fact remains, Assassins Creed has not enjoyed this much attention in years and now all of a sudden it's all over N4G for no other reason than it looks slightly better on XB1. Why arent UBI focusing on the gameplay changes or characters and story etc?

Actually, I never cared. Never cared the base PS4 had better graphics than the OGX1. Never cared the PS4P had better graphics than the PS4 or OGX1. Don't care that the X1X has better graphics than all the others. Don't care that PC has the potential to have better graphics than all the rest.

Said so in my follow up comment. I didn't get into the resolution gate debate, and at that time, I said many of the same things I'm saying now.....that this gen's games are mostly just like last gen games with a shinier coat of paint. I've pointed out some instances of things which couldn't have been done on last gen. I've given credit to advancements in game design where it's warranted. I've given credit to improvements to existing franchises. But the only time I brought up graphics was on a technical reasoning level, because graphical improviements don't advance the medium of gaming.

Have nothing against the comparisons. They're fine. But the attention they get seems more inclined towards inciting fan boy hostility, and as I've said, it's causing more important aspects of game design to take a back seat to all the bluster of pixel counting.

As far as if the console version is better than the PC version, that seems rather silly to assume as PC's have the potential to be much better. If they don't, then it just means Ubisoft didn't try, and I'd rather discuss why Ubisoft is not trying than which console version is better, because that seems more of a concern than if a more powerful console can provide better visuals.

I don't blame gamers for being excited for the X1X potential. I'd be just as excited for a new gen really. But at the same time, graphical improvements are a given. What I find more appealing is how it's going to actually change the game experience, because for the most part, I've never said to myself....."damn, those visuals on Horizon on the PS4P are so much better than the OGPS4, that it makes the game so much better". The appeal of something shinier wears off in the face of boring, redundant, stagnant, or poor game design."

Somehow I wonder how the original X1 and PS4 versions will hold up to all this mid-gen talk.

Given that the mid-gen install base is going to be rather marginal compared to the already established user bases on the stock systems, it'd be nice if these devs would talk about those more, since that's where a majority of their customers will reside.

It's like they forgot there are about 90 million users already this gen they are selling to, and that their new job is to promote the mid-gen consoles as the most important thing in the world.

It's not that I don't mind that these types of reports get made, but the utter lack of talk about the overall performance of the primary customers that exist in the stock consoles is rather jarring.

While its nice to know how it's going to perform on the X1, or PS4P, why not say how it looks on the OG versions of the consoles? Does it play like crap? Did the devs just forsake the lower powered console since they have the chance to just ignore the larger install base like they seem to be doing with all the marketing?

On a more important note, are we going to start assuming Ubisoft can release a game that isn't broken on launch, and start to take anything they say as truthful?

When PC games are shown, it's typically on the best hardware available. I'm very happy with the PC I built this year and am confident it will play all games at extremely high settings and make me smile. Last year when I seen new games advertised on PC I kept my expectations in check since the gaming PC I was using was getting pretty dated. I was still excited for the games, but I knew to get the highest quality I would have to invest more to get it. I was never forsaken or left behind, it was a conscious choice I made.

No one is forgetting about the 90 million existing console owners, but if you want the best possible experience you should expect to invest to get there. If you don't want to spend the money, the games will still be available and the game experience will still be the same, just not at the same graphic fidelity/performance.

That's fine. I fully expect any given better hardware to be better than lesser hardware, and software on that better hardware to run and look better. It's pretty much expected.

What I want to see more of is the actual talk about how these games are somehow different than last gen, because this gen, it seems more like the only thing that really makes any headway is that they are prettier versions of the same games.

You go into an article about AC:O, about what it actually has to offer across the board, and no one cares, because it's not that interesting and comes across as Ubisoft marketing and promises which are likely to be broken on launch. You go into a resolution or performance article between the different hardware, and we get all this talk about why it matters, how the X1X is a beast, how something is better, and very little talk about the game itself. We saw this same thing happen with the PS4P was nearing launch, and some after, although I gave up caring by then.

The priorities are completely backwards for what gamers should be wanting. They should be wanting better games. Prettier games are a given. We'll always get that. We don't need to keep spending money every 2-3 years to get that. But if we want better games, we shouldn't be so distracted by which version is better. At best, the better version is best kept to a single, maybe two articles. It shouldn't take up the majority of the top articles of the day. It shouldn't be twisted into this fan boy nonsense, because ultimately, it's allowing devs and publishers to skirt by on actual true innovation. native 4K or 60fps isn't innovation. It's something to strive for, but ultimately, it's perfectly fine to forgo some of that if it somehow advances game development in the areas where it's important.

I think you may just not be looking in the right place. On n4g these articles generate the most interest and discussions (most of the time)

If if you look there is lots of talk about gameplay. Lots of developer diaries. Videos on YouTube especially from shows at e3 where devs sit with outlets after and talk about their games. Sea of thieves come to mind. Rare releases videos showing off gameplay and how it's coming along. And Nintendo treehouse stuff is really good. They play games with devs and let the devs talk about the gameplay systems.

Also I need to disagree with another part of your comment. I think devs should be free to focus on what they want to for their own goals and creative visions. For example the turn 10 guys seem genuinely proud of them selfs with forza 7. Creating a native 4k resolution racing game with LOCKED 60 fps and 4k assets. I just finished looking at a video where they are doing environmental lighting things while keeping 60fps that's never been done in a racing game. Who are you to come in and say that isn't innovative or impressive? We don't know what work they put into their engine maybe technical innovations were needed for them to achieve those impressive results and on a console no less.

Also where you say we are allowing devs to skirt by. I disagree. A game like gears of war 4 is very technically accomplished. 4k hdr and 60fps. But you don't hear people talking about it much. Zelda breath of the wild came out and dominated the conversation. They were recongjnized for their innovations in gameplay.

A game like horizon zero dawn. Heralded as the best looking game on PS4 pro. But that's not why it's discussed. It was a big part of the gaming conversation becuase it was a new ip. The devs and Sony were praised for breaking out and nitndelivering another killzone game but trying something new. They created a great game in terms of gameplay, story universe and it's all technically accomplished. Those things do t have to be mutually exclusive.

Uncharted lost legacy. Yes it's a technical showpiece for PlayStation. But from uncharted 4 tonlost legacy there is evolution in the game play. Uncharted is a linear game but for the first time in lost legacy you see how a open world uncharted could be. There's a open map with points of Interest I was free to tackle in any order I wanted to. Or skip them all together.

We've seen a return to survival horror game play with the evil with in. We've seen resident evil franchise go to first person for the first time while your saying games are same old. We're even seeing resident evil in virtual reality.

While not on pc or console we've seen devs explore augmented reality with a tittle like Pokemon go.

A resurgence in hard games like bloodborne. You may not like it but remedy tried something new with quantum break. Gameplay affecting tv show. There are tons of new elements in gears of war 4 hord mode. Even linnthe last month they released new modes. Uncharted 4 adding a new multiplayer mode that's wasn't there last gen survival. Halo 5 war zone. What other game looks like cup head? Have you tried sunset overdrive? Last gen were there games like the order or ryse? How about hellblade? What other game has mechanics like gravity rush? Have you ever see. Mario in a human world? Has he ever wielded a living hat??

It's a good time to be a gamer. If you don't like the 4k 60fps talk you can ignore it and just enjoy some of the games available on whatever platform you game on

I come to N4G for the news, just because I got tired of looking all around last gen when most of it was the kind of stuff that gets popular on N4G. I do know that better content exists, but discussion is mostly dead there, but in these kinds of articles, the discussion is lively, if not toxic at the same time.

Just seems counter to what people should be looking for or talking about or asking for, and these kinds of articles have been taking the top spot of the news sections more often than I feel is warranted for something that is pretty much a given to begin with. Better hardware often results in better visuals. Seems pretty intuitive to me.

Anyhow, to the part you disagree with.

While there are certainly exceptions to what I'm talking about, it's hard to argue that the majority of games this gen are nothing more than just prettier versions of games from last gen. Occassionally, we'll see one that does something unique or new that couldn't be done last gen, or it's finally improved to a point of being a push forward, but I don't see that in a lot of the games which are getting all these focuses on which version is better.

It might exist as devs do talk about their games, but they get buried in the utter tripe that is articles like this one.

When I say we're letting devs skirt by, what I mean is that games that will likely have issues, or even do, the talk about those things, or lack of innovation, is often muffled by the fan boys who want to go on incessantly about one version being better than the other.

As an example. The last Assassins Creed game had frame rate issues on the PS4. No real reason it should have had those, but Ubisoft said that it was because the X1 had a slightly more powerful CPU. That slight, and I mean slight enough to not likely to be the actual problem, became some console war talking point, as Xbox fan boys decided to use it as ammo against the PS4, and that became the bigger talking point over the fact that Ubisoft just did a terrible job of optimizing the PS4 version.

Now, Ubisoft, despite all their misleading statements on the quality of their games in the past....at least in the final launch products, are saying more things to hype up their game, and it's like everyone forgets that Ubisoft does this stuff with every big game, and every big game launches with problems. But since the X1X is the "most beautiful" version, it's now nothing more than a console war thing, and people won't just roll their eyes at Ubisofts incessant promises which are likely to go unfulfilled like they do in any article about Ubisoft that doesn't have some console war slant involved.

Anyhow, I can easily cite examples of games that don't skirt by, but I was speaking generally.

So, to put it another way....how is the X1X AC:O having the most beautiful graphics actually make it a better AC game? Seems what makes something a better game, or moves the medium forward is not as important as it used to be in the face of whose console can push the most pixels.

I haven't bought an AC game outside of a sale since Brotherhood because paying full price to be bored to death for 70% of a game is not worth the time, no matter how good it looks, and I'm pretty sure the difference between 1x and Pro will be tiny by comparison.

Of course the xb1x will be the most beautiful version (console I believe) to get similar performance you would need to build a £1200 pc with 16 gb ram and a 1070 gpu this is obviously because of closed platform optimisation.
The 6teraflops applies to the gpu but look at the rest of the system Microsoft have really made a powerhouse console that is simply much better than Ps4 pro.
Yes the Ps4 pro has rapid packed math tech (Fp16) This will be a feature that will have gains but only in certain instructions eg a.i.
Yes I believe that Sony have the better exclusives but these still are only a handful of games and personally my favourite games are multiplats.
The best place to play games in a simplistic way is Xbox one x, it's the closest thing to high end pc gaming from a console to date.
Digital foundry will be eager to test every game that comes out let's just let the experts point out the obvious when it comes to which versions are most beautiful lol, can't wait!
