From GameWatcher: "What started off a cute story about the making of the original Quake from 1996 has spiraled into accusations of lying and shown some real bad blood between the original '90s id Software team and Tim Willits, one of the last of the "classic" developers still at id Software."
The best free first person shooters you can find today on PC, featuring classic and unpopular titles you'll enjoy.
Looks like a great time to jump back in the Arena as the Quake Champions March Update is here.
Quake Champions is a competitive, arena-style first-person shooter for the PC that returns fans to the frenetic, skill-based competition that made Quake an industry legend and solidified it as one of the first major eSports games.
Quake Champions is my favorite fps atm
". . . John Romero, John Carmack, Adrian Carmack, Tom Hall and American McGee . . . have all denied Willits' claims."
That makes Willits a liar indeed. Romero, John Carmack and American McGee *are* the real id. What they say about the company or its games trumps anything out of Willits' mouth.
I played the original Doom and thought it was the best game until I experienced Quake and thought it was the best shooter, and then Half-Life arrived! My point is that these guys tended to improve fps games from game to game and studio to studio. A lie like this is a disservice to the talent of guys like Carmack, Romero and the game-players who at that time were ardent modders themselves. It was Doom players who actually started creating maps for multiplayer use. I know this well as I had just turned 20 and gaming was my life at the time with Doom taking over all my waking hours for about two years!
Leaving aside revisionists like Willits aside, I hope a brand new version of Quake or even a remake of the original Quake arrives soon for this generation of consoles and/or PC. I still have the original Doom, Quake and Half-Life PC games on my gaming shelves and while I still play the original games only occasionally, I loved the latest Doom which was head and shoulders over Doom 3. If they could only do the same for Quake...
