Zelda: Breath of the Wild glitch turns off the cartoon shader

Nintendo came up with a unique art style in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In a way, it almost looks Wind Waker, but not quite to the same cartoonish extent. But what would Breath of the Wild look like without its art style?

looks like a PS2 game lol ...though i like it more ...i wanted to be more photorealistic but still keep intact the anime aesthetics

Shuckylad2444d ago

Your ps2 must've been a hell of a lot better than mine then. Dig it out and see how the graphics look now. I bet they're not as good as you "remember".

bluefox7552444d ago

Go watch a God of War 2 video on youtube, still looks fantastic.

OtakuDJK1NG-Rory2444d ago

@bluefox755
You do realize God of War games aren't open games. There corridor games except for the new one that coming but the rest of the all Hallways and Rooms.

The smaller the world is in a game the better they can output the visuals because less things to load, render, create and animate. Which is why Racing games are generally the best looking games on any game system.

morganfell2444d ago

"The smaller the world is in a game the better they can output the visuals because less things to load, render, create and animate."

Proof you do not understand how game engines function. There are a mountain of other factors at play besides the size of the map and they have a massive impact on performance.

Neonridr2444d ago

lol, your PS2 would smoke if it did anything over 480p. Even the Gamecube had a stronger GPU than the PS2.

I don't mind the art style at all.

naruga2444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

have you seen the game Bouncer on PS2 ??...literally has comaprable visuals (it was out of any league for its time) ...however ok i mnot talking about resolution comparison on a 10 year old console ....

InKnight7s2444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

Ps2 smoke? Looool that was your 5th Xbox 360 with RROD.
Even Gamecube, Wii, Wii U and Switch combined can't beat ps2 in exclusives and varties of games with both quantity and quality.
Edit:
With GT4 ps2 can go 1080i. In mean time, How long its took Nintendo to do that?

Erik73572444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

Guess it shows that if you actually have talented artist you can make a ps2 game look great then?

Man they have some talented people at Nintendo,

naruga2444d ago

^^i dont disagree with that ...in contrary i ve said it myself multiple times ....

Timesplitter142444d ago

I think photorealism is boring in many cases. For a game like Zelda, I'm in favor of stylized all the way.

You just have to look at the guy who recreates OOT in UE4 to realize that realism doesn't necessarily improve a game's visuals

InTheZoneAC2444d ago

Noice, but original looks much better. Going for realism is only good when it actually looks realistic, otherwise it's ugly

Prince_TFK2444d ago

That is actually a very cool glitch. Maybe Nintendo should incorporate this graphic feature into the game.

RGB2444d ago

Looks hideous, no wonder it has the cartoon shader, weak hardware for you. Smart to use tricks to make the games look better than they do, shame we won't get a Twilight Princess looking game with the scale of The Witcher 3 until Nintendo makes a real console.

Timesplitter142444d ago

It's not the hardware's fault. 3D models need to look like this in order for the toon shader to give good results. You need smooth low-detail surfaces, otherwise you're gonna get lots of shadow artifacts and ambient occlusion ugliness

RGB2444d ago

They went down this road because the hardware can't produce photo-realistic visuals. Hence why Xenoblade Chronicles 2 looks like trash with chibi looking models because of the same production problems. It's hardware, underpowered and thus why I'm waiting for a super scaled (Witcher-esque), generation defining Zelda game, 2 generations on.

MASTER_RAIDEN2444d ago

so even after receiving a perfectly logical explanation on why the game is low detail without the shader, you still try to make it about the switch having weak hardware, despite the fact that BOTW is a wii u game anyway.

your comment is extremely irritating.

RGB2443d ago

It wasn't "perfectly logical". Switch is massively underpowered. We'll never see the likes of The Witcher 3 running on it, and hence why I'm disappointed in Nintendo's need to cut corners and not actually make a powerhouse so we can experience generation/genre defining games like Ocarina and Mario 64.

MASTER_RAIDEN2443d ago

what does witcher 3 have to do with anything right now? stick to the topic at hand.

JackTheLiz2444d ago

and this is considered "news".

Timesplitter142444d ago (Edited 2444d ago )

well it's 1000x better than all those cosplay articles.

I actually think this is pretty cool. It reminds me of all the special easter-eggy stuff that people were discovering in Shadow of the Colossus back in the days

DrJones2443d ago

This is actually game news rather than another opinion piece

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the anti-Breath of the Wild

Polygon: "To get back to the way Ocarina made us feel, it was necessary to reject almost everything about it."

LG_Fox_Brazil139d ago

Ocarina of Time changed my life forever, such a masterpiece

Zeldafan64138d ago

Hard to believe it's 25 years old already.

Cacabunga138d ago

The feeling this game gave me the first time i had my hands on it is indescribable.. i still get the chill from that day..
botw is like a spin off of the series.. it’s fun but with many flaws and the most important which is Zelda formula isn’t there..

FinalFantasyFanatic137d ago

I can't even remember how many times I played through OoT, I finished that game, and collected everything so many times.

Vits138d ago

I generally agree with the author here. However, if I had to point out a single game as the 'anti-Breath of the Wild,' that would be Majora's Mask. Pretty much everything in that game is interconnected, relies on something that the player must have done previously, is timed, and can be considered a puzzle in itself.

gold_drake138d ago

but still considered the best of the seties.

i would have liked botw to be more like ocarina.

franwex138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

25 years from today whatever Zelda is out people would too be looking fondly at Breath of the Wild.

Ah the more simple times of the 2020s.

babadivad138d ago (Edited 138d ago )

It isn't...

Nintendo not thinking about older Zelda games, "difficult to say" if classic style will return

The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has again commented on the possibility of revisiting the style of past entries in the series – but there are no plans as of now. Speaking with RTL Nieuws, Aonuma said that games like Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom were possible because of what came before them.

Which is very sad. I still wish we could get a zelda like twilight princess, the dark tone and theme in the traditional style. But times have changed and the masses prefer open world sandbox. Smh. Perhaps we can get a proper hd remake of ocarina of time some day.

CDbiggen277d ago

I played 100 hours of Tears of the Kingdom, enjoyed it, but ready for a game like that next.

kythlyn311d ago

If they can bounce between 2D and 3D Mario games, they can bounce between classic and modern Zelda games too. I thought this was a given when the Switch combined a handheld with a primary console.

Inverno311d ago

Then this is where I part ways. I won't disagree with anyone who says that the old formula was getting stale. And I do think BoTW in a few ways was a step in the right direction, but there's way too much good that was left with the old formula in the transition.

CrimsonWing69311d ago

I want it to. I’m sorry, but these new Zelda games I just can’t get into.

Duke19311d ago

Well that sucks. I still love the classic formula WAY more than the Hyrule Engineering Simulator
