Is Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Really the Black Sheep?

The Legend of Zelda series has had many installments of varying qualities. Zelda II was very different from the original, but does that necessarily make it a bad game?

Mario 2 was also drastically different, least the western version was. Doesn't mean different means bad

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2435d ago

Yep. I actually prefer Mario 2 to the first, and I go back and forth between Zelda 1 and 2 being better than the other.

LastCenturyRob2434d ago

Mario 2 (US) was just fun..all the way through.

ziggurcat2434d ago

I still have very fond memories of Mario 2.

RosweeSon2434d ago

It doesn't but like Zelda 2 Mario 2 is prob worst in the series neither are bad games just solid 8/10's whereas all the others in their series are normally 9-10/10

InTheZoneAC2434d ago

mario 2 and zelda 2 are 2 games that no one asked for, next

Prince_TFK2434d ago

Why did it sold millions and became global phenomenons if no one asked for them?

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2434d ago

Because they didn't exist, how could they be asked for

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2434d ago

But in all seriousness, plenty of people enjoyed Mario 2 and Zelda 2 back in the day. Them sucking is a recent invention.

Soulst0rmer2434d ago (Edited 2434d ago )

new age I don't think people got your wittiness lol

Mario 2 is just a Mario skin mod for a game the Japanese thought would be easier than that crazy-ass Mario Lost Levels which was the original sequel we got in the All-Stars collection. It's actually a testament to how good Doki Doki Panic was back in the day or whatever the game was actually called. and it's cool to see that world fuse into Mario.

Zelda 2 but quite frankly one of the hardest I've ever played and it made it really frustrating. It was not as good as the original.

ziggurcat2434d ago

out of the series, yes, it's kind of the black sheep.

LastCenturyRob2434d ago

Zelda #2 is probably my third favorite in the entire series..right after the first Zelda and BotW. Very under rated game.

ziggurcat2434d ago

Any self-respecting Zelda fan knows a link to the past is the best one of the series.

LastCenturyRob2434d ago

Been playing since the first one. LttP is a great game..top five, but not the best one. The first two were beyond innovative for gameplay and story elements for the time. LttP just borrowed on those elements and improved on the graphics. Fun game but not the best. BotW although new, is simply amazing on so many levels. What most Zeldz fans have been waiting for, for decades.

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2434d ago

I would personally disagree Rob that ALttP was a mere lateral improvement. ALttP was more linear and story-focused than the previous two, was the first to have puzzles as a significant aspect, featured numerous concepts that defined the series' formula while not being present in the two before it, Most definitely it is more similar to Zelda 1 than Zelda 2 is, but that does not mean that it's not a huge game. It's what I consider one of the three big Zelda games, alongside LoZ and OoT. I may add BotW depending on its influence.

New_Age_Retro_Hippie2434d ago

In my opinion, Zelda II is hated for what it is and not whether it does what it does well.

LastCenturyRob2434d ago

It certainly gets the cold shoulder..mostly from people who never played it. Many people even when released didn't like the change of gameplay perspective and left it there...Had more people played if from beginning to end they would have thoroughly enjoyed it.

InTheLab2434d ago

I remember picking up Zelda 2, shutting the trap door on the NES, hitting the power, playing for 10 minutes, and taking the game back.

Was expecting it to be like the original and it wasn't even close.

16 Underrated NES Games

There are tons of great games that have been overlooked in the mass of more popular titles. And I don’t just mean underrated games, either. We’re talking about grossly underrated and underappreciated titles in otherwise well-regarded franchises.

FINALLY someone who acknowledges the greatness of Gremlins 2 NES!! One of my favorite movie tie-in games of all times. I have fond memories of both the game and the movie from when I was a kid. I was playing it again just a couple of months ago, and it still holds up very, very well!

I rarely see people mention Gremlins 2 when discussing great NES games and I love you for that!

*edit - Sunsoft really was a fantastic studio. Another favorite, underrated late NES game from them was Batman Return of the Joker. It was so much better than the SNES version too. Something about it died in the effort towards upgrading the graphics and music. The NES version felt darker, moodier.

Longie_long842d ago

Thanks for reading. Always nice to encounter another Sunsoft enthusiast!

deleted842d ago

Np, great read! I also owned and enjoyed the heck out of Super C back in the day.

I'd also add Metalstorm to my list of underappreciated titles. :)

thorstein842d ago

Nice job. After reading about Xexyx (or however it is spelled) I was reminded of Astyanax and Faxanadu. The names were just otherworldly. But they were tragically underrated as well.

Maybe you should consider a Part 2?

jznrpg842d ago (Edited 842d ago )

@thorstein Faxanadu is one of my favorite games of all time . I played it so much as a kid I still play from time to time

ZeekQuattro842d ago

Kabuki Quantum Fighters was a Nick Arcade classic. Never played it but the name has stuck with me to this day because of that show.

Longie_long842d ago

Nick Arcade was legit! I never saw that though.

ZeekQuattro842d ago

Not surprised. They usually kept playing the same popular games of the day in different rotations. Every now and then you got a random title like that one. I found the name so odd that it just stuck with me.

P_Bomb842d ago

With Sunsoft you knew you were getting good graphics and music,

Personal honorable mentions to Faxanadu and Crystalis.

racer22842d ago

I dont know if its been underrated, but kung fu master was such a awesome game on the nes. Even if it couldnt compare with the arcade version in graphics, the gameplay was so amasing. Awesome sound effects too. Played it for countless hours....

Five more Nintendo games that should get the Link’s Awakening remake treatment

GameCrate: "Our first look at Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl reminded a lot of folks of another game: The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening on Switch from 2019. What other titles should Nintendo revive with this specific graphical update?"

Zelda Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages not being on that list is criminal. If they remade Link Awakening, they should definitely remake those, since they were using the same visuals on GBC (but with the later two being a little prettier). Plus imo, those 2 games are better than Link Awakening (and they take longer to beat).

Neonridr1145d ago

all 3 should definitely get the treatment. Those style of games would fit perfectly with these aesthetics.
