Microsoft is Going the Wrong Way About Marketing Xbox One X

“PC quality gaming for half the price.”

How does that sound? It may not be entirely accurate, but it certainly gets to the point and sounds a lot more appealing than pushing the agenda of “True 4K Gaming” and “Six Teraflops”. The biggest problem with Microsoft’s messaging for the Xbox One X has been that they’ve marketed the system with unfamiliar metrics and non-standardized resolutions which only seem suitable to a very niche audience. This has routinely left both gamers and press alike scratching their heads wondering what the point is to pick up “the world's most powerful console”.

From the sound of how preorders are going, that doesn't seem to be an issue.

AspiringProGenji2450d ago

Pre orders are always gonna be high at first for a new console

YAO-BLING2450d ago

yup its for scalpers to flip.. duh people. don't buy into the hype.. they probably produced a few consoles and just clarified PR statement to make people buy it.. same ol MS cheap tactics.

jmetalhead778122450d ago

@ YAO

So, by your logic scalpers are buying a console that's going to flop. Then turn around a sell it to no one?? Doesn't sound like a smart business move. Maybe just maybe it's doing well?

Critic4l_Strik32450d ago

@jmetalhead77812

Scalpers buy consoles to re-sell them immediately at a higher price to desperate people who couldn't get their hands on one on the first couple of days after release. I seriously doubt scalpers care about the console flopping or not. They only care about making some profit out of these sells.

Silly gameAr2450d ago

I know right? Xbox fanboys are going wild over this like MS announced a new IP or something.

I was about to say from early pre-Orders they seem to be doing ok. The real question is why is it doing so well early on?

KickSpinFilter2450d ago (Edited 2450d ago )

Limited edition Project Scorpio, that's why

343_Guilty_Spark2450d ago

Because it was slyly marketed as a next gen console that plays all Xbox One games and uses all the same accessories.

Overload2450d ago

Selling to people that regurgitate slogans, aren't happy with their Xbox One S and despise the PS4's success, aren't a hard sell. Let's see how the rest of the world reacts. We already went through this "Xbox is back" hype cycle with Xbox One S, it didn't amount to much.

Condemnedman2450d ago

how bitter are you? very by the sounds of it. I have no hate toward the ps4 just it's ridiculous fan boys that rile me up. why does it bother you the xbox one x has sold out?? did the pro sell out?? just enjoy your stuff and leave us proper gamers to enjoy our gaming preferences. I don't need to troll Sony articles to get through the day.

trooper_2450d ago

^

How is he bitter for pointing out a legitimate comment?

-Foxtrot2450d ago

Not really bitter

People did say the Xbox One was back with the Xbox One S...it happened, can't erase it.

mrjam02447d ago

I must have missed the "Xbox is back" with the S. I would agree that it wasn't much to get hyped for since it's the usual hardware upgrade, but with HDR and some 4k support.

fenome2450d ago

I'm not saying it's going to have legs and continue to sell, I'm not even interested in it, but so far what they've said about preorders is that it's initially doing quite well. We'll see what happens after the core fanbase stops eating it up.

Rude-ro2450d ago

How many are pre-ordered?

Italiano12345672450d ago

It was only for scorpio edition. We dont even know how many there were.could of not been many at all

KickSpinFilter2450d ago (Edited 2450d ago )

That's a collector edition of a piece of hardware, for the same price as the standard XB1X. Limited edition.
Ya it sold fast, as would of a SP4 Pro Project Neo, but Sony was not as smart to market it that way.
Once the regular XBX1 is set for pre-order, that won't sell out nearly as fast.
XB1 S / X will sell higher than PS4 S/Pro for Nov/Dec (Unless Sony does a price drop throwing everything up in the air.) then it will be back to normal with PS4 selling more. No idea about how XB1 / Switch will play out

King_Lothric2450d ago

The same sound Pre orders of the Wii U had and it ended up being garbage. Pre orders is not a good measure to say a system is a success. Anyone who has been on the gaming industry knows that.

subtenko2449d ago

You can judge preorders off how good or successful a product or preorder is..

I remember cards against humanity letting people preorder poop and then theres the other kickstarter crap that gets cheap 'marketing' tactics to fill a small $5000 goal...guess that means its a good item and successful legit best/fastest selling contender right? Wrong!

You have to judge a console 1-4 years after it comes out to get a good grasp of how its REALLY done. Boi I tell ya I still remember the OUYA....I stayyyyed away from that thing, looks like I was right

mrjam02447d ago

True. But pre orders always sell out as there will always be enthusiasts out there. But how many times have you heard people say, "What's the point of getting a One X? I don't have 4k, and I have a PC." I just think that they could make that price comparison to PC to really push the point home. But we'll see.

Lol....yeah ok another desperate article by some hater.....I guess all those preorders never happened either right??? GTFOH!

_-EDMIX-_2450d ago

lol

This article just makes no sense.

Be like "going the wrong way about marketing"

....product is selling out in stores.

They need to help me understand this logic.

AmUnRa2450d ago

When you xboxfans say it over and over again maybe then it will be the true, ore not?

OMGitzThatGuy2450d ago

Gotta keep some type of negative stories in rotation when it comes to Xbox.

OffRoadKing2450d ago

"Selling out in stores", how is it selling out in stores when its not actually out until November? smh

rainslacker2450d ago

The fact that the mainstream consumer doesn't understand 4K fully yet and all it's various standards which make it confusing, is exactly why MS....and all the other companies making 4K products....keep throwing around all these terms like they're hard candy at grandma's house.

Generally, the mainstream isn't always that interested in the finer details, and is attracted to the shiny polish that this author says they need to get rid of.

_-EDMIX-_2450d ago

@Rain- Exactly. I find my best marketing is done when I have very little specifics. Most really don't care.

@Off- You can sell out of something before it hits stores based on pre-order....ie they ran out of stock based on those ordering early...

This isn't a hard concept to grasp folks.

OffRoadKing2449d ago

@_-EDMIX-_

And yet his exact words were "selling out IN stores" which isn't an accurate statement and your attempt to spin it doesn't make it any more accurate, but thanks for sharing.

_-EDMIX-_2449d ago

Off-road please put it to rest and stop bothering people about stupid irrelevant semantics.

Amazon is still a store and you could still buy the Xbox One and have it sell out in said store..., And yes all of this going to happen before it releases because you could still pre-purchase something even before its official release.

Please stop bickering and going off topic for stupid reasons.

At the end of the day the fact that this product is selling out of pre-orders very much contradicts this person's point that they're doing a bad job at marketing marketing is to Simply convey a product if done well you will get sales so clearly by them selling out in regards to pre-orders they're doing something.

King_Lothric2450d ago

A console for the casual Xbox hardcore fan who used to say "Power doesn't matter. We play games and not resolutions"

Italiano12345672450d ago

Everyone seems to forget preorders were only for scorpio edition and there were a very small amount for preorder. Until i get real numbers noone knows...it could of only been A 1000 we dont know

2450d ago
_-EDMIX-_2450d ago

I actually disagree.

I think MS is doing a good job marketing XONEX. They are marketing it exactly the way it should be marketed and them selling out very much shows something is working.

"“True 4K Gaming” and “Six Teraflops”. The biggest problem with Microsoft’s messaging for the Xbox One X has been that they’ve marketed the system with unfamiliar metrics and non-standardized resolutions "

Thats nice....

The vast majority don't care though.

They will hear 4K, they will buy a 4K TV and buy XONEX for their 4K XB needs.

Most people don't really care about that stuff, we can look at this with a microscope all day, but your normal gamer is not on N4G or NeoGaf etc reading game news and putting 8 hours of gaming a day etc, its just not really the norm. Many might think it makes sense based on what they see.......most don't know this, don't care and simply want 4K, most likely can't even see the difference from checkerboard to native etc. MS will be fine.

OffRoadKing2450d ago

"and them selling out very much shows something is working."

Selling out of how many, exactly?

_-EDMIX-_2450d ago

Who knows, but clearly their marketing is working if they are running out.

mrjam02447d ago

Good point. But my concern is for those that are turned away that this system is just for 4k. I actually heard someone on a gaming podcast say "Wait, the S does 4k. So what's the point of getting a Xbox One X?" Much of the games press also seem to be dismissive that "Oh, you can just get this on PC" while actually getting games at that performance is harder than they give credit for.

But optimistically, apparently the PS4 Pro sold a fifth of the PS4's overall sales, and that system was market even worse than the One X. So perhaps folks will respond to this system much better.

_-EDMIX-_2447d ago

Well that is one way of looking at it, but I don't see X doing that much better.

You have a higher price and less games. Those that want that 4K and are always on the cutting edge likely side with PC, so its a pretty hard sell for many.

Microsoft Opening Xbox Mobile Game Store in July

The Xbox brand is expanding, as an Xbox mobile game store is opening this coming July where Microsoft will brings its "first-party portfolio."

Jin_Sakai1d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

“Bond adds that they will start on the web”

This will go nowhere.

Nice knowing you Xbox. This is what happens when the house never gets cleaned.

MrDead1d 4h ago

The only this MS is expanding is the amount of feculence it sprays on everyone who just want to enjoy gaming and make games.

The best thing MS can do for the gaming industry is leave and never return.

Good luck with this even it might not succeed.

Project Spark idea was decent but they quickly gave up ..
LBP was wonderful

ApocalypseShadow1d 10h ago

Microsoft in a nutshell. Always tried to poach Sony employees, games, 3rd party games and devices like the depth camera that was turned into Kinect but was running on PS2 before Xbox 360. Wouldn't be surprised they wanted LBP. Just like they worked behind the scenes pushing the MLB to bring Sony's baseball game to Xbox instead of making their own.
https://www.playstationlife...

They didn't spend years trying to develop their own baseball game. They wanted Sony's game.

They're scum.

Zachmo18214h ago

Microsoft didn't force MLB on Xbox. MLB gave Sony 2 options either go multiplat or risk losing the license.

Rynxie5h ago

And why do you think MLB said that? I believe Ms approached MLB.

ApocalypseShadow4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Totally ridiculous comment.

The only exclusivity Sony had was to their own creation of The Show. Microsoft could have paid the MLB for the license just like Sony did and made their own baseball game.

Microsoft instead, groomed MLB for years in trying to poach Sony's game and bring it to Xbox. They're worth 3 TRILLION dollars. You think that's not enough money to make their own baseball game? Don't be delusional.

Microsoft spun it like they always do and told the media that they had to trust Sony with their hardware. After they put Sony in that position of not having a choice. Either go multiplatform or stop making one of their successful games. That's a no win scenario.

And what did Microsoft do? They didn't try to sell the game to the Xbox community. They put it on game pass to hurt Sony. Pushing the idea of why buy games that are $70 when you can play them in their cheap service for $10. It was a dirty tactic.

You fell for the Kool aid drink Microsoft served you instead of spitting it out. Hope it tasted good because you were fooled by Phil and the gang.

Major kudos to Media Molecule for being an upright studio with principles.

RNTody17h ago(Edited 17h ago)

Great, more stories like this please. Show the last of the zombies holding the line what we've been saying for years: Microsoft is anti competition, anti industry and has no interest in making games at all.

But hey, at least there's an Xbox Games Showcase to look forward to, right?

Inverno16h ago

Well considering SONY just killed the series, LBP would've been dead by now either way. Though MM probably wouldn't exist by now either, so I'm glad they stayed with SONY, hopefully they don't get shut down any time soon or ever honestly.

Inverno14h ago

They shut down the servers, that's millions of user created levels gone. That and dead are pretty much the same, it's also been years since 3 and they cancelled HUB soooo.

fsfsxii1h ago

They shutdown the servers because no one was playing, no one in the community cared about the user created levels so why keep them up? Wtf you guys would never succeed in running a business.
