Microsoft has yet to even make a new IP this generation that can easily stand alongside Halo and Gears of War

Thatguy-3102458d ago (Edited 2458d ago )

Heck those titles are barely standing on their own lol they need to invest on new IP's that can thrive in the long

JaguarEvolved2458d ago

It's just pathetic that Microsoft has to lie to try to trick people into buying a Xbox. They can't just be honest and explain what's really going on because mostly fanatical fanboys would buy the console.

darthv722457d ago

Can't believe he actually said that with a straight face. Unless he was referring to the popularity of titles like Halo, Gears and Forza (have to admit those are pretty big franchises) but then Sony has GT and God of War which are just as if not more bigger.

2457d ago
Shin-Zantetsuken2457d ago

Xbox executives are living in an alternate reality or somebody within their office is generating a reality distortion field somehow that prevents them from seeing the actual reality. There is no helping Xbox if its executives truly believe what Aaron said. Lol

ThinkThink2457d ago

If we keep feeding Aaron sandwiches, like continuously non stop, he won't be able to babble. #SendAaronSandwiches

Aenea2457d ago

@all the above

It's easy, Aaron works for MS, he uses the Bing search engine, they've filtered out all the Sony exclusives so Aaron can't find any....

hamzilla2457d ago

They should have had Scalebound but we all know what happened there

FinalFantasyFanatic2457d ago

@Thatguy-310,

It's more like those titles have become worn out, they've climaxed and Microsoft can't squeeze much more out of them without being very creative or rebooting them (and that comes with their own issues).

They need new blood.

Or just IPs that can leave a strong impact

trooper_2457d ago

Exactly. Aside from Forza too.

S2Killinit2457d ago

MS is a corporation that has no interest in making games, they believe in buying existing games and think themselves too large to cater to such a niche demographic that is the "gamer". Up until this generation this strategy had worked fine, but i think gamers are realizing what happens when such a business model is forced to compete with a strong 1st party producing strategy.

bolimekurac2457d ago

you are right this gen they have lacked in bringing some monster exclusives, hey it happens to everyone, sony had a miserbale start at the ps3 gen but over time exclusives that where good arrived. same will happen for ms, even ps4 had a slow start. so dont just bash ms for that. we all agree they need more exclusives, its not the end all be all

GrubsterBeater2457d ago

@bolimekurac

I would agree with you if we weren't around 4 years into the generation already...

It takes time to create games, especially at the beginning of a generation when a lot of games are still in the development pipeline. So that excuse is all well and good... buy after about a year or so into the generation, a nice steady flow of games with highly rates exclusives should start to begin popping up. This isn't happening with MS, and instead of trying to remedy the problem, they double down and say they have the best games, the greatest lineup in history, etc. Then, gamers are getting worried about the obvious lack of games, and what does MS do? Spend boat loads of money on... a new console!

They don't get it, and they won't get it until XBox fans start holding MS's feet to the fire instead of living in delusional la-la land, where it's all rainbows and magic, with tons of games everywhere and everyone is happy. If they don't step it up soon, then their fanbase will start dropping like flies..

bolimekurac2457d ago

where any of you holding sonys feet to the fire when the first 3 and half years of ps3 where stale, or when the first 2 and half year of ps4 where stale. exclusives are all great and all but as the numbers show they are not everything, yes i want more xbox/win10 exclusives and they will come. there ar emore then plenty of games to play my man. stop living in the delusional world that if a console isnt stacking with exclusives then it means doom and gloo, , it doesnt, we had exclusives each year until this year where its lacking a little.

CoinOrc2457d ago

We did hold Sony's feet to the fire during the PS3 days. A lot of gamers switched to the xbox 360. Then Sony started releasing hit after hit for the PS3 while MS virtually stopped supporting the 360 during the second half of the generation. PS3 sales started to pick up to the point where PS3 ended up tying with the 360 in terms of sales. For this generation, MS has again virtually stopped supporting the Xbox One. Their only answer is to release a $500 mid-gen upgrade with few exclusives being in development. Sorry, but that doesn't fly with me and with most gamers. The sales show that. Until they start pumping out more exclusives, the xbox ship will continue to sink. Unfortunately, judging from recent comments from Phil Spencer, it seems like they are no longer interested in making exclusives and they are going to a "games as a service" model. Whether that strategy will put them on top remains to be seen, but if I were a betting man, I would say that strategy will fail.

Uken122456d ago

That is the most ridiculous thing to say. Dude MS has no exclusives. Xbox 1 Has had nothing. Halo is long gone, Destiny 2 will just put the nail in that coffin.

To even say something that stupid when Nintendo Consoles are only relevant because of exclusives, just goes to show MS has nothing. They have been touting "exclusives" for 4 years and we have yet to see anything. Honestly Forza? like dude c'mon.

And then Sony has more exclusives, easily. And their exclusives are big budget mainstream games that sell.

When you talk about exclusives and leave out Nintendo, you aren't a true gamer.

Nodoze2456d ago

Considering neither of the two mentioned franchises are still even developed by their original creators, even they are a shadow of what they once were. Sad really.

What about a new Kameo (I loved that game on 360). We need something, anything, from them.

If only they would not have WASTED all that money on Minecraft. Why? I mean it makes no sense at all. That amount could easily have funded 10 upstart studios and the creation of NEW IP. Alas.....more Minecraft is all we get.

Of course not. Sony and Nintendo, both destroys xbox when it comes to exclusive.

Deep-throat2457d ago

You are biased bro. Sony and Nintendo exclusives are mostly mediocre.

But I think Sony is doing good lately... it took three years though. Not sure about God of War or Days Gone, especially the latter.

MegamanXXX2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

Lol that's the way I feel about Microsoft first party exclusives except for Forza got to give them credit for that

Phill-Spencer2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

"Sony and Nintendo exclusives are mostly mediocre."

The Denial is strong! Metacritic, sales and consumer acclaim proof you wrong. If you consider those as mostly mediocre, then how bad ms exclusives must be in comparison?

sizeofyou2457d ago

And you, of course, aren't...
So sad...

Shin-Zantetsuken2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

Hey guys, look! Deep-throat is back to help everyone... relieve some stress... if you know what I mean. He is really good at it and that is why he is known as deep-throat. Lineup everybody and wait for your turn. LOL!

On a serious note, that is just your opinion... and is completely wrong. Nintendo and Sony both have some of the highest rated and best selling franchises in the industry. Whereas, Xbox has had some of the lowest rated and worst selling exclusives this generation. Nobody in their right mind would call Sony and Nintendo exclusives mediocre.

GTgamer2457d ago

So you're not biased? Ha seriously you might want learn what that word means

Phill-Spencer2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

That's how they kept so many HARDCORE fans loyal

exclusives so far

SixFragz2457d ago

Calling someone bias that's rich coming from you lol. See facts are on his side because they actually do show Sony and Nintendo have the best exclusives what with sales, reviews and the majority opinion helping to prove it. I own an Xbox also and I'm constantly getting on ms for being stale and not producing games but see that's the difference between a fan like me and a fanboy like you I'll call them out while you'll cover your eyes and ears pretending everything is ok. Grow a backbone ms doesn't care about you so you should quit defending them so hard and get on them to improve

yellowgerbil2457d ago

look at zelda, it single handedly sold the Switch. Or do you think people bought the switch at launch for 1-2 switch?
THAT IS THE BIGGEST EXCLUSIVE. Mario Odessey, pokemon, monster hunter, those are all system sellers. God of War, Uncharted, The last of us 2, those are system sellers. Crackdown sure the hell isn't, nor is super lucky tails. Halo and Gears have both lost a lot of favor with fans and seem to be going the wayside like Socom, but unlike Microsoft Sony doesn't keep beating the same dead horse and moves on, we have seen that lately with the games Horizon and Last of us, and will see it again when Sucker Punches new IP gets revealed in December.

FinalFantasyFanatic2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

@bolimekurac @Deep-throat

You two are the worst and I'm sure you know it.

Sony and Nintendo have the most exclusives, most of which end up being highly acclaimed, if you seriously think they're not swimming in high quality titles, then Microsoft must have s**t-tier number of titles and acclaim. If your going to your opinion so matter of factly, then please back it up with numbers and links (e.g. a list of current and future exclusives titles and their mediacritic scores where applicable).

It's sad when the Switch has pretty much only just come out and it's already out-performing Xone's titles in amount and quality.

You two should be hounding Microsoft to treat customers like yourselves better, smh.

A lot of people thought Sony is arrogant. Sure, they are. But not that way too arrogant like Microsoft. The only difference between Sony and Microsoft are the direction. Sony prefer a long road and Microsoft prefer a short road. For me, I prefer a long road. Because it's easy to learn and hard to master, but it's worth it in the end.

freshslicepizza2457d ago

You have to look at each company as a whole, Sony needs to invest in their own intellectual property because quite frankly without gaming where is Sony at this point? Microsoft on the other hand see Xbox as a supportive device, so their direction is different. I am not giving them a free pass on game investment because I agree they need to do a lot more but each company is at a different place. Microsoft earns billions every year, Sony had to restructure its whole company and is putting a lot of focus on its gaming division which is great for gamers but its future is questionable.

IRetrouk2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

I will remind you that the playstation division is its own division, sony itself can close and playstation can survive all by itself, the overall health of sony is irrelevant to playstation, micro has more money yeah but the xbox division hardly has a free budget, it is only allowed so much, whatever way you want to look at it the playstation division is doing better than either microsoft or nintendos gaming side. The numbers speak for themselves, when it comes to GAMING the playstation brand has had a more consistent history than most.

trooper_2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

What is that supposed to mean?

Yeah, Sony isn't going anywhere. You can pray to a Buddha statue but they'll still be around. Their future isn't questionable if profits and good news is rolling in.

Omnislashver362457d ago

Well there's always the fact Samsung came along with Galaxy phones which became the most popular and bolstered their image. LG also holds a patent on the OLED technology everyone wants to use. So between those two Korean giants, their low and high end was inevitably going to suffer. As far as Samsung goes, they're not even the best value most of the time and LG is holding onto their OLED patent like no other. Sony still produces many reputable products at a competitive price, but to think they'll succeed like the days of the walkman when people are just willing to go elsewhere even if they're providing a competitive deal is not entirely their fault.

Another reason why your example sucks is MS simply owns the OS that has compatibility with the most programs. Simply put, if you want it to work, you go to MS. But their UI is often clunky and unintuitive without modifications. When setting up my Windows 10 PC I immediately use Powershell to remove as many programs without uninstall options I don't want to use from the setup. I modify windows dlls to install themes because MS has no UI sense, I Registry Edit to remove options and menus I don't use or are needlessly repetitive. They make the UI experience so bad most people don't even know how to use it. Nevertheless, at the end of the day, I've modified my PC to work intuitively and I'd HAVE to because there's no other way to get these programs working most of the time.

Full circle when this comes to gaming you really have a dead point. This article is about who has the biggest exclusives and according to sales, it will be Sony. MS's strongpoint, UI, is not infinitely superior to Sony's UI which is very simple and easy to use, and again isn't making any difference when it comes to the exclusives department.

MegamanXXX2457d ago

What a desperate comment. Hang in there buddy Microsoft will turn things around in the future

Christopher2457d ago

That's a really round about way to say Microsoft needs to invest in exclusives. I'm not sure mentioning that gaming is a side item for Microsoft is a winning argument to the consumer market either.

Realms2457d ago

Oh moldy just *sigh* your clueless Sony trims the fat becomes profitable once again but their future is dubious? Please explain? MS has been trying for the better part of two decades to take over the video game industry and has failed. Even tho MS has a lot of resources they do not use them on the xbox brand in fact some within MS have wanted to drop xbox brand because it's not as profitable so again your blind sided way of thinking is wrong.

Why o why2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

See people, this is the result of what ms does to it's fans. They have to spin so hard to somehow group, downplay or level things.

They are forced to lie and use slight of hand

Being honest is out of the question. Ms do not have the biggest exclusives. They don't even have a comparable amount. I'll let the fact all of their exclusives come with a * slide. Despite this, even using Windows 10 as a crux they still don't have a comparable amount. . How many new Ip's? How many game of the year awards. . . . . .

This guy is in every cross game article chastising Sony yet uses less than a fraction of that energy questioning why they get so little from his preferred brand. Not an attack, just an observation and he's not the only one either.

We don't need to hear about what's happening at Sony hq. I'm not an investor, don't own shares and I know I'm just a customer to them. . Did they jump or were they pushed isn't even relevant. They produce more for their core and their core is more varied in theirs tastes. To me, that's gamer friendly.

rainslacker2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

So, basically, since MS is just using Xbox for other means, their short sighted approach to building the Xbox brand is OK, because the company as a whole will continue on, whereas Sony, may for some reason go out of business despite doing everything necessary to bring themselves back into the black, with the PS as a major part of that happening.

Sony's not going anywhere anytime soon. They've righted the ship, and will continue to do it as long as they need to. They did what they have to.

but on MS side, if the software isn't important to them, and the console fails to actually achieve whatever MS intends for it to achieve, then MS could just drop the Xbox brand and go some other route.

I'm sorry, but in all this, MS is much more likely to leave the console market before Sony is, and since MS investors tend to not see Xbox as a major tenant of their business, there is less impetus for them to care either way. It's much more likely they'd drop the Xbox brand if it doesn't profit enough, so even if it's returning a profit, the investors could very well want that money invested in more profitable ventures if they don't see results from MS approach to gaming.

Everything you're saying is moot to the discussion at hand, and even to the original posters comments.

On top of that, you say you have to look at the companies as a whole, which I suppose you do, but you fail in every way in actually applying what you glean from that look to actual real world scenarios and potential outcomes, and instead twist some random stuff around to form an argument based on an agenda.

In any case, Sony is investing in their own IP's, and they are getting praised for it. MS isn't, and they're receiving heavy criticsm. I don't care the reasons a company does something, because if all they can do to survive is give us products we want, then so be it. MS not needing to do anything doesn't mean their products appeal to me. I'll buy the products from either company if they invest in making products I want, which is the real impetus for any company to make a product which will hopefully profit.

If MS wants to achieve more with the Xbox, then they should invest in their own IP's. Its not rocket science.

freshslicepizza2457d ago (Edited 2457d ago )

@Christopher
"That's a really round about way to say Microsoft needs to invest in exclusives."

Which I already highlighted. They still do a lot more than Valve who tried to sell people the Steam machine but console gamers seem to be more vicious and put a lot more stock into exclusives.

"I'm not sure mentioning that gaming is a side item for Microsoft is a winning argument to the consumer market either."

It's not trying to win the argument, its to put things into perspective. Microsoft is not going to win the console war against Sony, probably not ever. They just don't have that worldwide appeal and they seem to be tailoring back in investment. What they are doing with Minecraft kind of explains their direction moving forward.

On the contrary Sony is trying everything they can to hold onto what they have while trying to gobble up intellectual properties. We seen it even in the indie scene with the Pub fund where they require some sort of exclusive deal. Quite the opposite of the direction Valve takes who wants to be as open as possible; Even in VR they want it to be open. Sony wants to control everything because like I said, without gaming what do they really have left to fall back on? Valve sees their value through the service they provide (and it's FREE), Sony thinks locking gamers out unless they buy their hardware is the answer while they leverage that power with third party because even they know it takes more than just exclusives.

Microsoft can utilize Windows and some console fans think that's a bad idea, as though now they are no longer exclusive so whats the point of the Xbox. Totally missing the bigger picture all because they just want to focus on exclusives, advocating that without them consoles hold no value. Valve is already proving they can provide what gamers want, without holding them hostage and without charging them a dime outside of the software prices. How many games per year does Valve make?

Dark_Knightmare22457d ago

Well besides the movie and the t.v division Sony is profitable. PlayStation is their biggest money maker but they've really turned the whole company around which is why they've been back in black the last few years and profitable maybe you might want to quit living in the past and join everyone in the present.

Uken122456d ago

@moldybread is correct people. Down vote all you want. That just shows how biased and closed minded the people are.

MS is actually fine. They can recover in the future and probably will. The market need competition.
PC will be fine.
Playstation will be fine.
But he is right about Sony, their most successful product is Playstation. "Sony itself can close and playstation can survive all by itself". WTF are you saying?
Sony would never close and just run on the Playstation brand, it would still be called Sony Playstation. People obviously don't know business. They could shut down every other product they manufacture and focus on gaming but that doesn't mean it would succeed and I doubt that would ever happen. MS or Apple would just buy them out them out if they were in dire straights.

Sony isn't doing better than Nintendo when it comes to profit. You people think in short term.
Don't talk about numbers and then not know what the true numbers are.
You seem to think Playstation is outselling Nintendo, when you neglect the Nintendo Handheld division. Which has had the largest numbers in the past 15 years or more.

I am a gaming fan, but not an ignorant one. The truth is, Sony and Nintendo are fine. Not going anywhere anytime soon.

yeahright22456d ago

@why o why
"See people, this is the result of what ms does to it's fans. They have to spin so hard to somehow group, downplay or level things.

They are forced to lie and use slight of hand "

It is pretty bad now. I've seen xbox "fans" just in the past couple months just on this site defend micro transactions, tricked themselves into thinking that giving up tons of exclusives games is ok because multiplats sell more, knock single player games as one and done simply because xbox doesn't have any stand out SP games... I mean stuff like that doesn't tell me you're a fan of xbox, that tells me that you're a fanboy of xbox. they just want xbox to be viewed in a positive light no matter what they say. The true xbox fans actually see these issues and want to correct them instead of blindly defend them.

IRetrouk2456d ago

Uken, you obviously dont read properly, not what i ment at all, i dont think sony is going anywhere but the overall health of sony does not effect playstation, its a spin off company my friend, that was my point, and again i said one of the most consistant in gaming, which they are lol, nintendos success comes from its handhelds, go look at their numbers lol, the wii is their only home console to break 100 mill, most didnt even get to 60 mill sold, Every sony home console has hit 60 mill......

Microsoft - Nintendo - Sony

ElementX2458d ago

I'm happy with the exclusives on both consoles. Sony focusses more on single player it seems and Microsoft has single player but they seem focused on multiplayer. I think the biggest draw to Xbox exclusives is the online portion

Rimeskeem2457d ago

That's because MS had a big stake in eSports with Gears and Halo.

Now those games are dying and Sony was smart with investments to CoD and other bigger eSports games.

ElementX2457d ago

eSports? Where'd that come from? You think every online game is considered an eSport or something?

Bruh2457d ago

You're confusing a marketing agreement with that of a publishing one. Sony paid Activision to market the game exclusively. They don't have publishing rights ( aside in Japan) and thus they aren't owed royalties or money from IP usage. Now Microsoft on the other hand ( dying or not) earn 100% of the royalties from E Sports because they OWN those IPs and publish those games.

trooper_2457d ago

No, the biggest issue is exclusives, period.

TheColbertinator2457d ago

Of course, it isn't about that. You are attempting to set up a self-righteous strawman to stir up some kind of ignorant mob mentality.

And by the way, most everyone is a touch heartless or we wouldn't be able to consume the products we do knowing very well how they are made. People have to be this way because of self-preservation and convenience.

Yea, it was and it’s insulting that they think we’re dumb enough to fall for this. Look, the truth was you took a gamble on these studios and while they released some games to critical praise and great reception they just aren’t bringing in a ROI. Be transparent, you’re not a politician.

Just tell everyone you spend money on projects big and small and when money isn’t being made you go over the potential of revenue a studio can bring in vs those that can’t and make the hard decision to chop them.

She says this whole thing about “success” doesn’t fit one meaning for each studio. Well yea, a small budget production isn’t going to expect to sell the same as a large budget production.
