Game Informer: Deer Hunter Tournament Hands-On

Game Informer: "In the relatively small spectrum of hunting-based video games, the Deer Hunter series has firmly staked off the simulation end of the genre. While other games have found audiences by providing highlight-reel style portrayals of the hunting experience, Deer Hunter is happy to focus more on realism-including those long stretches of time when nothing much happens. While its slower-paced gameplay isn't tuned to every player out there, the series has attracted its share of fans, maintaining that fan base years after its last installment."

GamerVision: Deer Hunter Tournament Review

When you're finally able to find an animal to shoot, the kills are rewarding thanks to realistic body physics, but those moments are so few and far between that it's hard to justify the effort spent searching for them. Even if the multiplayer is tempting, odds are the overall lack of polish will be too off-putting for most gamers.

Even for $20, there is such an abundance of annoying sound, graphical, and gameplay glitches that hunting fans would be better served picking up an older game in the series or buying a better shooter and pretending their enemies are prey. Sure, the humans in Far Cry 2 might not be deer, but the environments are much more realistic, and there's no game like the most dangerous game.

IGN: Deer Hunter Tournament Review

If it wasn't clear from the title, this game isn't for everybody. With that said you can tell developer Southlogic Studios loves the sport. The single player gives you a good sense of the desolate wild and at times you will feel like you're really out in the wilderness. However, this game requires a lot of patience. You can play for an hour and not find an animal worth killing; the game will probably bore non-hunting fans. To be frank, IGN would like to give this game a higher score, but the number of bugs and tweaks that need to be fixed really does hamper the package as a whole. With that said, this game isn't a bad value for the hardcore hunter at $20.
