Nintendo Switch Online App Is Nintendo's Worst Mobile Effort Till Date

Gadgets 360 says: "Nintendo needs to figure this out. The Switch is one of the better consoles from the company, and with the likes of Rocket League, PayDay 2, and other multiplayer-focussed games slated for the system, a half-working app isn’t good enough. Until then though, its safe to say this is the company’s worst mobile effort to date."

It even somehow manages to make Wii Speak look good

Dalailana2485d ago

I don't understand the hate for this app. imo it's amazing esp Splatnet 2. Very useful.

deafdani2484d ago

Amazing?

Really?

Talk about low standards.

If you have been in a coma since 2002 and this is the first time playing online in a console, then yeah this is pretty amazing..

Waiting for Erik7357 to come in and defend the chat feature on the Switch, because he doesn't use it...

Shadyceaser2484d ago

Just had me some of that ... Lol

deafdani2484d ago (Edited 2484d ago )

You can't even send text messages to your friend on the app.

Yes, it is absolutely awful. How in the hell did Nintendo manage to do something even worse than Wii U's friend system, which was already atrocious?

I love my Switch, but yeah. This app is terrible, period.

PapaBop2484d ago

Lol what? And here we see on here every day about how Nintendo are turning things around and you can't even send text based messages via it's online infrastructure? That's piss poor. How can they be turning things around when they can't even get the most basic of features right that we've all been enjoying for so long?

_-EDMIX-_2484d ago

This isn't even PS3 circa 2006, this isn't even XB 2002....

This is very, very....very bad.

Nintendo needed a strong networking team and help them get a strong base of features, ie default voice app, messages, friends list etc.

This isn't something that is tolerated in 2017, it simply makes the company look bad.

I have ZERO plans to use its online after hearing all the junk thats going on. I'll just game with my friends using the wifi lan feature like I did with DS and 3DS (lets hope they didn't screw that up either)

2pacalypsenow2484d ago

Ps2 with Socom in 2002 had better chat support

pwnsause_returns2484d ago

...the Vita had all this built in day one.....THE VITA....THE GODDAMN PLAYSTATION VITA!!!

_-EDMIX-_2484d ago

@2pac- Thanks, I forgot about that, and FFXI with the HDD add on.

buffig2484d ago (Edited 2484d ago )

I absolutely love the switch. I've had it since launch and Nintendo looked liked they were defying expectations with whatever it did. Zelda IMHO is one of the best games of all time. Arms is superb and I'm loving Splatoon. But why oh why, with such a mobile, competitive play oriented device have they got this so badly wrong? My friends and I have resorted to using psn to talk while we play. It's just fortunate for Nintendo that people love this console so much (deservedly).

deafdani2484d ago

Your sentiment is mine as well. I love the Switch, but damn if the online communication isn't atrocious... It's even worse than it was on Wii U, and that's saying something.

INMATEofARKHAM2484d ago

Frankly, I'm just suprised by people's surprised reaction to this.

They've always lagged behind in online multiplayer to expect otherwise is hopeful but foolish.

edeprez2484d ago (Edited 2484d ago )

To be fair, switch online is worse than even Nintendo's own previous consoles and handhelds. At least they would build the features on the device itself on the past. The smartphone birds-nest is next level stupidity.

FINALLY, Super Mario Land. I actually like this one better than SML2, bc it felt so odd and different. I was absolutely blown away in 1989 being able to play Mario for the first time while on car rides!

My parents recently brought some of my retro stuff from the US over to the EU where I currently live. Man, I forgot how tiny and hard to see the OG gameboy was! haha I appreciate revisiting how I originally used to play these, but I do enjoy especially OG Gameboy and Game Boy Advance releases on NSO bc the portable screen lends well to these games for my aging eyes! I could insert complaints about the drip feed of releases, but I still do appreciate these on the Switch especially w my nice 3rd party Nyxi grips that feel like a proper controller.

I also just pulled my childhood Gameboy out of storage and picked up a ever drive for it for around 20 dollars.

I feel you with the screen visibility I don't remember it ever being that hard to see I would play in the back of the car under all sorts of lighting unless it was night time I hated road trips that would go into early morning or late night because of it.

There's a ton of mods out there which require little experience to install a backlight into the old DMG Gameboy they are cheap to I'm in two minds about doing it because I don't want to mess with my stock original system but I find it hard to use and I am a sucker for playing games on original hardware. Links awakening on emulator vs the real thing I chose the real thing every time.

Profchaos3d ago

Oh yeah come on super Mario land. I have no idea why it took Nintendo to bring it's Gameboy launch title to the NSO service.

It's not as good as 2 and it's controls are janky even by the time of its release but it's iconic in its own way and the music is so catchy some.of my favourite Gameboy music was from this game just that opening level song is a classic.

Fusion did a great job at it. Really love that horror feel with metroid. I mean you are completely alone on alien planets filled with horrific monsters and toxic environments.

I'm happy for more GB games, and these are pretty solid titles, but why haven't we gotten the original SMB Land? It may not be considered one of the better Mario platformers, but I still enjoy it and have fond memories of it as one of the first GB games I ever purchased. I can understand us getting SMB Land 2 first, as it's more traditional to the series, but I hope they don't skip part 1 all together.

eagle2168d ago

Super Mario Land is CLASSIC (sold like 18 million...lol). Short but sweet. The main theme music alone is awesome and nostalgic. I have no clue why it wasn't included Day 1 when Game Boy released on NSO.

PS and Xbox constantly get berated for their sub services but Nintendo always seem to get a free pass and their service is shocking compared to the others
