Red Dead Redemption 2 Not on the Same Level as GTA 5, Says Take-Two

Rockstar is working on Red Dead Redemption 2, but Take-Two doesn't have GTA-like expectations for it, as in 80 million units worth of expectations.

I don't think Rockstar or anyone thought Grand Theft Auto was going to sell 80 million copies.

narsaku2494d ago

How could it? They made GTA5 for last gen, "pretended there was no current gen version", then BOOM!... Launched THAT too, then BOOM! Suddenly they're in LOVE with pc gaming and launch that LAST!...

What does RDR2 have?... No chance. It's a mid gen release. It'll drop on two platforms that together don't even reach 100 million users, "what did the ps3 have sold by the end of last gen?.. Over 100 million by ~~~itself~~~?..."

Not to mention it's just flat out the less popular IP.

Don't worry tho people, it'll be a great game, and R* after GTA5 have no concerns about money... Just being realistic, that's all.

zackeroniii2493d ago

just being salty and delusional, that's all.

nucky642493d ago

you talk about ps3 sales at the END of last gen. in 3 years and 9 months , t he ps4 has sold over 60 million - I imagine by the END of THIS gen, ps4 will have outsold the ps3.

DarXyde2493d ago

Agreed. I find that, in general, any game allowing for exceptional amounts of freedom from in game rules and restrictions do very well. Bully doesn't have that level of flexibility that GTA does. Red Dead Redemption is second to GTA.

Other examples include The Witcher 3, Minecraft, and even World of Warcraft.

If RDR2 offers that kind of freedom, it'll do very well, but never as well as GTA V, unless it also releases on the next generation consoles with something like Shark Card microtransactions.

SoulMikeY2493d ago

lol, you believe that 100 mil thing? You actually think there was 100 million active, and working ps3's? lol

Not even close.

senorfartcushion2493d ago

First one sold about 15 millions copies. You're completely right.

Skankinruby2493d ago

Your down votes are hilarious. People who beat off to this game with these 'one of the best selling games ever made!' comments try to disregard why it's selling as much as it is.

I personally know 8 people who own this on ps4 and didn't pay a dime for it and just got it with a bundle and shelved it.

Bottom line is all this 80 million sales is nonsense. The ACTUAL user base is maybe and I can't emphasize that MAYBE enough, is probably around 20 million at most, on three platforms active right now. But these silly kids wanna act like this is the greatest thing in gaming history it's so retarded.

Benchm4rk2493d ago

Wasn't ps3 sales total around 83 or 84 million. Wii was the only console last gen to crack 100 million

SixFragz2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

Oops, it looks like your "PC master race" will be missing out on a great title from Rockstar.

Trust me, none of us are worried about it not being a great game, because it will inevitably be an epic one.

Enjoy all of the gameplay you'll be watching on YouTube though.

GTAV sold 80m sadly bc of the mind numbing online mode. GTA Online has become the go-to for girls and young boys around the world and it's quite popular in streaming circles. This is what keeps GTAV in the top 10 month after month and i can only imagine what GTA6 will be like? The Online portion might be the featured part, god help us. Games as a sevice.......this is the type of thing that gives Microsoft and Ubisoft a hard-on.

TheOttomatic912494d ago

I'm sure they will change their tune once the game comes out.

badz1492493d ago

I don't think RDR2 will sell GTAV numbers but 1 thing for sure, it will slow the GTAV momentum down a bit in term of sales. 4 years on and the damn game still charts high in the top 10 in major markets. that's some pretty long legs it has but with RDR2, we'll start seeing GTAV sales dwindling.

IamTylerDurden12493d ago

RDR2 will do huge AAA numbers 10-20m. Anyone who even expects anything close to half of what GTAV sold is a fool. R* would do back flips if RDR2 sells over 20m. This article is pretty dumb, pointless. GTAV is an aberration, even GTA6 won't do 80+m. GTAV is an all-time selling game. RDR2 will do awesome and imo be a much better game.

roadkillers2493d ago (Edited 2493d ago )

Every newly released console GTA has outsold the last. No reason GTA6 won't do the same.

GTA6 on PS4 and Xbox One in 2020 then PS5 and XboxNext in 2021.

DivoJones2493d ago

Nah, Red Dead just doesn't have the audience and legacy that GTA does. It'll sell well enough, and Rockstar isn't going to suffer one way or another. I'd guess 15-20 million units sold.. their pedigree of developers make good games, but GTA has been around for a heck of a lot longer and has been improving on itself.

IN.MY.OPINION

Redemption is the best Rockstar game so far.

Don't get me wrong though, GTA V is a classic just because of the scope it accomplished and how well it was successfully executed.

But Redemption's story, gameplay and setting meshed so well. You really got lost in that game.

nucky642493d ago

I enjoyed RDR1 more than GTAV - the reason (for me) is the story was much better.

InTheZoneAC2493d ago

GTA v has the best campaign in any GTA by far. I also like rdr a lot, cant knock either one

modelgod2493d ago

It was better, PERIOD!!

BlackTar1872493d ago

i just love the horses and western theme. Nothing beats that for me.

Dragonscale2493d ago

So true. Redemptions story was great. The ending was a real kick in the nuts.

Prince_TFK2493d ago

I'm still surprised till this day that Rockstar would make that ending and make the consequences that follow.

Such a classic game.

Sam Fisher2493d ago

I guess to each their own, mine is manhunt. Wish they make a current gen game with Multiplayer. One can dream.....

Sam Fisher2493d ago

Modelgod

Yea i am, i like taboo things. Not bc im into it but the fact that its not mainstream, arent you tired playing 90% of games that you are a hero? For once you never wanted to be the bad guy, the monster?

roadkillers2493d ago

A new Manhunt would be great

DivoJones2493d ago

The gunplay was almost too easy in RDR, though it uses the same aim-assist as GTA.. but for a game placed in the wild west I'd think it'd be more concerned about how it handles.

GTA V is on 5 platforms (PS3, PS4, 360, X1, PC). Meanwhile, RDR2 will be on 2 platforms (PS4, X1) and possibly another in the future (PC might happen). There is no way it could sell as much as GTA V.

DarthSocio2494d ago

I'm actually surprised GTA V is as popular as it is. Compared with the previous generation's trilogy, the story is incredibly "meh" and after you played it through once, there's not much incentive to play it again. I can't count the number of time I finished GTA San Andreas. I guess milking GTA online really paid off while the single campaign players got shafted

generic-user-name2493d ago

And what post launch support did San Andreas get exactly?

Skankinruby2493d ago

And what does your comment have anything to do with what he said exactly?

SUCKxITxEZ2493d ago

And what part of his comment did you misread to jump to that stupid question exactly?

generic-user-name2493d ago

Not hard to follow is it? He whined about them 'milking' gta online instead of supporting single player. Meanwhile praising San Andreas despite it never getting post launch support.

Anyone who thinks San Andreas is better than V needs to take off the rose tinted specs.

Sunny_D2493d ago

Agreed. The replayability in previous GTA was thru the roof and it showed you don't need a nickel and dime online portion to continue the fun.

Take-Two CEO: We're So Focused on Delivering More Value Than We Charge

Take-Two head honcho Strauss Zelnick states every time they establish a price, they want to make sure it's "good news for consumers."

It's the why we close servers after 2 years, why we re-use the same assets every year, and why we bundle our game with enjoyable microtransactions.

neutralgamer19921d 2h ago

Running digital casinos in every game

Rebel_Scum20h ago

Re-using assets is not a bad thing tbh. Development is all about re-using code, assets and components.

neutralgamer19921d 2h ago

Can you please focus on delivering enough quality content to justify the $70 asking price? While I appreciate the idea of over-delivering, it's essential to ensure that the base content itself is worth it. I have concerns that GTA6 might have less single-player content because most of the focus seems to be shifting towards online play and microtransactions

Inverno1d 1h ago

The sleaze oozes out of these gaming CEOs faces. It's honestly disturbing how distorted people look when you've realized how money obsessed they really are. He gives off "in one ear and straight out the other" vibes.

jambola1d 1h ago

I really don't get it
like
do they think anyone believes what they say?
is it that being in charge surrounds you by so many yesmen that they get deluded into thinking everyone is like that?

JackBNimble14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Well if you look at the last 10 years you will notice there wasn't as single paid dlc. Every update was free whether you want to complain about sharkcards or not.

They're going to make billions on this game especially if they keep the same formula as last in regards to updates.

Good-Smurf1d ago (Edited 1d ago )

Selling Shark cards and removing content are not exactly "good news for consumers" lol.
The last time they released any DLC worth playing was 15 years ago.
GTA V is so broken and unbalanced that people would rather do stupid cringey stunts with than do heists.

JackBNimble14h ago

I'm sure the player base would disagree, and gta5 is still being supported, much longer then most games, after all I bought gta5 day 1 on ps3....
