PS3 UK/EU Launch CONFIRMED - 23 March 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe today announced that PLAYSTATION®3 will be launched in the PAL territories including the United Kingdom on 23rd March 2007 at a price of £425.

Responding to retail and consumer demand, SCEE confirmed that initially only the 60GB model would be available, with the 20GB model to follow later in the year dependent on demand.

An expected one million PS3 units will be made available during the initial launch period to all SCEE territories.

SCEE also announced a stellar launch line-up of over 30 game titles for PS3, including eagerly awaited titles published by SCEE such as Resistance: Fall of Man™, MotorStorm™, Genji™: Days of the Blade, FORMULA ONE CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION and Ridge Racer™ 7. An exceptional range of titles in every genre will also be available at launch from the world’s leading third party publishers, including Electronic Arts, Activision, Namco Bandai, Sega, Take 2, Ubisoft, Vivendi Universal, and Sony Online Entertainment.

In addition to games on disc, an exciting range of fully-featured downloadable games
will debut on the PLAYSTATION®Network. These will include gaming icons such as Tekken®: Dark Resurrection and Gran Turismo® HD Concept; the fully-featured PS3 debut of the best-selling franchise Gran Turismo, realised with full HD (1080p) visual quality. Created by Polyphony Digital Inc and published by Sony Computer Entertainment, Gran Turismo® HD Concept has been downloaded by more than 350,000 users since it was released in December 2006 in North America and Japan.

Also available on the PLAYSTATION®Network will be brainteasers such as Go! Sudoku and Go! Puzzle, and innovative games such as Blast Factor™ and flOw™, designed exclusively for PLAYSTATION 3 and delivering on the promise to provide original content created by non-traditional developers and publishers.

Concurrent with the European launch, a new System Update to further enhance the entertainment potential of PS3 will be issued.

Remember the 17-5% tax - so £60. How much is your tax on products in the US? Without tax for US that would mean we would still have to buy it for $700. I think Sony can get back some money from Europe...as they can now make a profit. I thought we were meant to be getting details about all of Europe and Oz too. Do they get both systems? How much?

For me march will be fantastic. Im getting my sony bravia 40" 1080p hdtv and then im getting the ps3 in march. Things couldnt get better

Ive got a very similar TV to yours (Bravia, 40" (Only capable of 1080i though)), and I am looking forward to play on a Next-Gen console now more than ever.
Wii isnt next gen. Its a repackaged Gamecube and it sucks, and the 360 has never grabbed me.

Anyway, IMHO £425 is not that bad.
Its what ive expected, and its a decent price.

that all of the 360 games suck, but when 75% of them are in the ps3 european launch line-up, all of a sudden they're so great? again, games come down to personal preference. just because you think they're great games doesn't mean everybody else will. fight night r3, fear, r6:v, tony hawk, splinter cell: da, ultimate alliance, cod 3, oblivion, blazing angels, ect, ect all suck on the 360, but now they are part of a great ps3 line up. you didn't have to wait a year for them because that year was spent waiting for the system itself.

i think the choice to delay was a master stroke, look at the high profile titles that are coming on day one of europes launch, and i think it's cheap the price for europe, considering that the ps2 when it launch was similarly expensive, and judging by how the psp was swarmed over and sout over by millions in the UK and EU, and that to me is way too expensive when it launched in the US as portable gaming device, but it's value proved it was a force to be reconed with, and just shows that the Sony brand is just as strong, True Fanboys will snatch it up, but non gamers will too and not so hard core gamers as well, have you seen the prices of those blu ray players in Europe, out-f***ing-rageos if you ask me, Sony will definately sell and once games like Heavenly sword and lair grace the system things will really heat up,

It's as if deep down inside, they truly believe that they have the power to stop people from purchasing Playstation 3s. They can pout and scream "It's a ripoff!" and "I didn't buy it, so you shouldn't buy it either!", but it's having absolutely no effect.

And the Preimium £199 the same month Sony launches. No way is that PS3 going to sell here in the UK. The 360 has been out over a year but its still percieved as a brand new out machine. The shop shelves are full of 360 games including pre used ones from just £15..
I just cant see how Sony can turn it around, the games they have coming on launch day are just not good enough!
Sony had their chance to make a difference it should have been £299 and no more. £425 theres no way, anyone thinking of paying that are mad or wealthy, just wait a little longer and save yourself a ton of money. This christmas the PS3 will be down to £249 MAX!

where exactly have u seen a new premium for £199? my friend got a brand new core for xmas £200 FRIGGIN QUID! he had to shell out almost 200 on top of that for 3 games, HDD, wireless controller, controller charger etc. thats 400. that pretty much equals the price of a ps3. yeh it might have 3 games, but 60 gig hard drive makes up for that.

It is true that the ps2 was just as expensive. But they did also reduce the price very quickly afterwards...and it has sold as hotcakes because of it. But this time, the price of making the ps3 is not easy to reduce - expect this price to stay up there for a long time. i live in the uk, my friend got a jap ps3 for xmas with 3 games (rr7, genji & gundam) all of which were terrible. everyone he has shown it to that wanted a ps3 went out and bought a 360 icluding 2 of my other friends that were die hard sony fans.

People tend to skip a few major facts. First one being Sony is a way bigger trusted Hardware distributor than Microsoft. Thats puts the two systems together in a hardware battle and any one can see will see. The PS3 far surpasses the 360 in technology. Dont worry about europe so much. Being european I know that the price wil not effect us if its quality merchandise. Rather buy something thats built for the next 8 years for a little more than something that was built 1 year ago with no real future thought put into it. How can you say the PS3 was rushed and the 360 wasnt. Lets add up the differences.

Although the 360 has better software support. Software support can always improve and change and is usually free. However they are lacking in hardware and there is no way to improve that without tugging at your pockets. You people act like Sony is giving the same value equipment as Microsoft for more money. No they arent. They are giving a better deal. Now if they nail there software support (games,firmware upgrade) sorry to say but you will see people drop that cash over buying the cheaper system. The world is not all about cheap fixes. If that was the case Mercedes Benz's and BMW's would never sell. Everyone would just rather buy honda and toyota. think about.

Why do you think Mercedes and BMW keep dropping lower into the market?? Why do you think BMW has a 1 and 2 series?? backwards compatability is a problem on ps3 + xbox games run alot nicer on 360 when they get on the list... you might want to check out the list its pretty frickin big.

ps3 has blu-ray and hdmi !
blu ray is slow and full of clones of the same data to try to fix this... its ok for movies but...(its a games console)
as most games are 720p neither are needed.

360 has better memory, gpu ,usable cpu power, amazing online infrastructure a cheaper price more games, better exclusives and multi-format games are better on 360.

Sony had a big advertising campaign here in the USA where Playstation was priced at $199 compared to $299 for the Sega Saturn. Saturn came packed with Virtua Fighter, but even with that the Saturn was still more expensive than Playstation if you bought Battle Arena Toshinden separately. As gaming consoles go, i have owned nearly all of them at some point PS1/2 and PSP included and the only thing that sets them apart from the others is the huge market in piracy! I've lost count how many times ive been to markets boasting "3 games for a tenner!" As it stands Blu-Ray discs are very expensive and i can't see much of a market for "game back ups" which im sure accounted for a huge slice of sonys console sales.

For 2 GAMING consoles that are pretty evenly matched £300 with 3 games vs £475 with 1 is pretty conclusive to me.

Being a movie enthusiast also i've never used any of my consoles for movie playback and would prefer to buy a standalone HDDVD or BLU RAY player to watch my films on, depending on which format comes out on top.

That's funny... your Silverado :) I was thinking about getting rid of one of my PS2s (my sis-in-law has the other one that won't go online) and my original Xbox, so I can get a PS3, just to have it. Why? Because why hold on to a PS2 if the PS3 will play all the PS2 games I already have? Plus, it'll play some of the PS3 games coming out that I'm sure I'll want to play. I don't know, though... My advice. Wait for a price drop. No games console is going to sell bucketloads for £425. Once Sony have dried up the hardcode fans, little tommy and jimmy are not going to be able to get mum and dad to fork out over £400 quid for what will be "another playstation" for them. When you bundle it with a couple of games, it's effectively £500+. That's waaaay too much.

Remember that there are plenty of people out there still waiting for a 360 price drop before they fork out on that, nevermind an overpriced PS3!! Plus, the Wii is still sold out over here in the UK and that'll still be high on everyones list way into March time...

the only newspaper i read is 'The Metro', the free newspaper you can pick up when you use london rail services. Im not paying 20p for a freakin newspaper! I need all the money i can get for my ps3! Alot of people still have a 1080i set. Having to purchase a new hdtv just to be able to use your PS3 in HD is a BIG drawback.

I was also reading that since all hdtv programing is in 1080i or 720p that if you have a 1080P tv, broadcast, cable,and sat hdtv will look worse on such a set due to the way it's converted. So 1080i/720P capable set is still the best. Sucks for HMMM. Add the price of a new TV to the price of your ps3 purchase. Unless your cool with 480P only.

have already been on or will be on the 360. again, no one has answered my question. why are they great games for the ps3 but not the 360? and they are launch titles for the ps3 because of the "delay" of the system. if the 360 would have been released at the same time they would have been launch titles for it as well. i'm not saying that people shouldn't buy a ps3. i'm not saying it's a bad system. just wondering why virtually every day i come to this site, i see tons of posts about how the 360 only has 1 good game, and how we had to wait a whole year for anything decent, yet these same games we have been playing all of a sudden don't suck when they are part of the ps3 line-up.

I didn't. I'm at work and do not have the ability to watch and listen. The thing you're forgetting is that I couldn't care less. I don't care about Sony or Microsoft, I only care about the Xbox360 and the PS3. I really couldn't care less about what Sony or Microsoft does as a company... as long as their respective consoles provide entertainment by way of good hardware and software. If Microsoft also sells babies, or if Sony also sells nuclear bombs, it doesn't affect my feelings on how much fun their consoles and games are. my brother in law in guam. I'm tired of playing and waiting for endless FPS's. Where are my action titles, Next Gen racers, fighting games, RPGs? I did enjoy my 360 but it's clear the system just doesn't offer me the variety of games I like. I am sorry for coming at you the way I did, but enough is enough! im going to explain to you why im buying a ps3 instead so you get idea of why someone still would,

i would buy a ps3 becuase the xbox does not do it for me! dont get me wrong the xbox 360 is a great console, much better than the ps3 at this point in time with great games but unfortunately none of those i care about.

it seems the xbox 360 is following the same strategy all over again which bieng the perfect console for the guy that wants to play sports games and shooters. which is fair and fine but these arent the kind of games id chosse playing over lossing a good nights sleep or going out. i only enjoy them when im playing against a bunch of other people people i kno not complete strangers.

playstaion has a larger variety of games if you look at the best exclusives the range from games like final fantasy to metal gear solid to gran turismo to heavenly sword and so on and so forth. with xbox you have games like halo, bio shock, gears of war, lost planet, and a bunch of sports games ((i do stand o be corrected here im not going to act like im and xbox expert or anything, this is the impression i got correct me if im wrong)) you see where im going with this im sure theres forza an equaly strong if not stronger substitute for gran turismo. but gran tursimo automtaically takes the cake because it has way more official cars and im sorry that counts for alot since it simulation. and sure you have blue dragon which as gotten good reviews but id rather go for FF13 if that trailer is anything to go by its gonna be off the heezy.

im assuming just like with the xbox i do not need to own a xbox 360 to enjoy it. i know my friend has one and hes gonna get halo 3 and weere probably gonna spend sunday afternoons playing it with the guys having a ball. its crazy how you can just throw your whole day away playing that game without even realising it.

thats thing thats what xbox is its the perfect multiplayer console playstaion doese not do even nearly as good a job as meeting that crtieria. but when your friends are gone and your sitting in your living room playing the game it just isnt satisfying. ((reminder! this is my opinion plese respect that)) this is where the need for more single player games comes in and uve got to admit xbox does have as many more good single player orientated games as playstation does.

issue is i prefer playing single player games i wanna play the campaign finish it and get on with my life or move on to the next game. so x box games for me are very unsatisfying cause they are far too short. this is why i am getting the ps3 as messeded up and as expensive as it is. it has the games i wanna play. i cant just have an xbox it does not translate into a better experience for me i kno this because my borther has one. the xbox seemed to be growing strong for a while when gears came it it was like yeah this thing rocks now im just like hmm.

but with playstation ive always enjoyed its games its a fromula thats always worked for me. why should i change it right. right now the ps3 is not all worth the money neither was the ps2 at first either. but im guessing it some point soon it will be. until x box 360 gets ff12 mgs gt heavenly sword; more single player games or games as good as those i will just have to pass on it. cause what would be the point if im not getting my idea of a satsisfying experience. sonys console right does not add up to the xbox greatness that doesnt matter right its not about that right its about games and if im getting b**ched by sony to pay more to play the games in wanna play ill just have to suck it up and do it.

Well the games that are comming out only on PS3 or PS2 is a good reason to get one. For me personally this is the main reason. There are alot of old and new franchise games comming to PS3 only that you might want to play like millions of us playstation gamers.Secondaly, it will make a good high def player being a blue ray player. I don't know whos actually winning the format war but with the backing Blue ray is getting it might just win but i think it 50-50 right now.Thridly PS3 is future proof for the next 5 years minimum so no more extra costs for upgrades. Lastly but i say it with uncertiantity. If PS3 game developers are right about the full potential of the PS3. In 1 or 2 years time we might see something "REALLY" next gen.Hope this helps

...BUT I have to disagree with you. Now yes we do have alot of shooters, but we have alot more coming out on the 360! Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Ninja Gaiden 2, Alan Wake, Forza 2, PGR4, Crackdown, Fable 2, Dead Rising, Splinter Cell, Lost Odyssey, Cry On, etc...

Now every game you mentioned, we have something similiar. Our Forza to your GT, Our Blue Dragon to your FF, our Splinter Cell to your MGS, our Ninja Gaiden 2 to your Heavenly Sword, etc...

Forza has already been called the best car sim out there by top magazines! Forza 2 is just around the corner for release, while Grand Turismo comes out in mid 2008??? Final Fantasy comes out in 2008? Looks like ps3s top guns aren't even coming out this year!

Now fight games are perfectly equal...atleast now that the 360 has the best 3d fighter on the market in Virtual Fighter! (atleast in my opinion) We have Dead or Alive, you have Tekken! Soul Calibur is a fantastic game...but part 3 for the ps2 was a mess! Part 1 & 2 were top notch! Dont know anything about part 4!

Now this is where the problem arises! You say that you go back to your old school ps2 games! Well thats the main thing! You had SUCH A FANTASTIC RUN AND GOOD MEMORIES on the ps2, that its hard to let go! Your loyal to Sony cuz Ps2 was such a success for you! And I'm sure it was a success for many sony fans out there! The ps2 was a fantastic system!

But its a new generation, and the 360 has outsmart and outplayed the ps3! Came out a year earlier...our game library has already seen 17 games sell a million each! Multiplatform games look better on the 360! IGN and Gamespot both agree the 360 has the most wanted games for 2007! And all this for almost half the cost of a ps3??? Sounds like an easy decision to me!

But still the things you countered with arent really that solid such as. Forza and GT both get great ratings. I bet as much people besides Xbox Magazine that say Forza is the better Game Also say GT is the better Game. I mean GT has Car&Drive magazine on there side. that says alot. It is been claimed the biggest racing licenses hands down. and for GT5 they are adding a whole new game "engine" driving physics. More likely a little more arcade like such as Forza. So Forza has yet to Trump GT in the eyes of Sony fans. they are fairly equal across the boards.
Splinter Cell to MGS. If a majority vote was taken that would favor the side of MGS. Its a more solid franchise than splinter cell. Splinter Cell is now being ported all over the place and sure your going to say MGS is getting ported too but thats still rumor and specualation not to mention highly unlikely. Just as silly as the Mass Effect on PS3 rumor.
Final Fantasy is an already proven and rock solid franchise. A lot of people dont know what blue dragon is or if its even going to be of final fantasy calibur.
Ninja Gaiden is not in competition with Heavenly sword. Cause being Fair Heavenly sword is an unproven franchise as well. But Ninja Gaiden will get nice competition from DMC4 or God of War 2 wich is still a PS2 game but its deemed on the level of most next gen titles or maybe even God of war 3 wich has been hinted about numerous times in interviews with jaffe.
Virtua Fighter is multi plat now but again has never trumped the Rock Solid Tekken Franchise.
The whole outsmart and outplayed sony thing is still your personal opinion. It has been two months for ps3. Xbox has not broken any of PS2's Records and by Mid year sony's line will equal 30 games roughly. So to a Sony fan there still isnt a valid reason to jump ship. At all. We see Xbox360 as doin slightly better if not the same as its original Predecessor. Dont believe me look at the sales numbers. Also the fact its not called Xbox2 and Microsoft dropped the original Xbox support doesnt really say alot for there gaming strategies. So whats to tell us it will out do PS3. Atleast we know Sony is known for there rocky starts but things pick up drastically. Usually after the first price cut. So although Xbox360 is a good choice for a previous Xbox fan. I dont see based on facts how its the right choice for a Sony fan. It hasnt even surpassed the PS2 yet. Just check top ten charts outside the US and see what everyone is playing. You may find 1 or 2 360 games up there either Gears or Lost planet if that and this is why people usually say 1 year 2 good games (no one counts multi's cause everyone knows that ports always have edge on the original system). While most sony fans are still playing there PS2. I just highly doubt seeing someone finish FF12 or GT san andreas or Even God of War 2 then go pick up a 360. No they are going are more likely picking up a PS3 after that. Just like someone wouldnt finish Halo 2 and go pick up a PS3 they would pick up a X360. But the thing is there is 105 million est. more likely finishin up on a PS2 and only 20-40 mill finishing up on the original Xbox to wich most alrear upgraded nov. 2005. I even read a survey that said the reason Xbox360 and Wii and selling as they are is because the original consoles have had little to no support for the 2-3 years now as oppose to Sony's PS3 not flying because yeah money is an issue and alot of people are still very happy with there PS2. Bottom line there is more Sony fans than Microsoft fans . by all the survey's i read and most of them think Sony will go down the same road it did last gen. So in these flame threads and politics on the net this site and others included and how people try to give you a negative bite on sony. In the real world where consumer choice speaks. Its speaking Sony. positive PS3 news for a change. As for the price I think Raist is right @#82. What with ALL the features that the PS3 brings 425 lbs. is bargain basement for a great machine to play games on, HDMI, blue tooth connectivity, built in wireless and a Stellar Blu-ray player - one would be crazy to think this is overpriced. Also I feel bad for havince and odiah. @88 -yous have really got this maddens on a roll. I live here too. Don't see the need to bash USA as they do a lot of good for everybody. Alot of the points aobve still don't matter and the Xbox 360 has 3 USB ports, not all the games on the 360 are BC as they have use a emulator, it takes alot of work and time to make certain games run smoothly with out any hiccups. Does it really matter that there is Blu-Ray? I still use my DVD's and so will many people, many people still use VHS. MS can release a new hard drive at anytime they want, they just want to get some more profits from selling the Hard drive and then i might think they would release one, i'm not gonna cry if they don't release one and on PC's you can get 1TB Hard drive. Come back in 3-4 years time and tell me if 1080p is mainstream if it is than your right, as of now it does not matter.
