Blu-ray launches next week

Blu-ray, one of two much-hyped high-definition DVD formats, debuts next week, but the launch is expected to be muted amid device delays and consumer confusion, industry analysts said on Thursday.

Sony Pictures this week said it will deliver various titles in the Blu-ray format to retail on June 20 to coincide with the first available Blu-ray DVD player from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Sony's own Blu-ray compatible VAIO PC.

Bluray has the most backing,HD-DVD is dead in the water.

XboxKing6544d ago

you think so

THEY say that thier is about 100 HD-DVDs on the way and only 15 or so for Bluray, but we will see who is the win in the end.

Bill Nye6544d ago (Edited 6544d ago )

He thinks right. Blu-ray has much more backing than HD-DVD and that's a fact.

THAMMER16544d ago

I saw an article on here about 2 weeks ago about PS3 being dead in the water. I think that is were PS3fan got that term from. Personally I see blue ray failing mainly due to cost. If it were at a competitive price point I would say other wise but Sony is gouging. It dose not matter how much support one has over the other, it will come down to where the consumer is spending ultimately. All of the studios that back Blue Ray will move over to HD DVD if that is where the consumers moneys is. It would be the same for both formats. The companies backing the formats are about cash they do not share a fan boys pipe dreams of Sony reaching the end of the rainbow.

I've spent far too much on my DVD collection to start replacing it already, I, like thousands of others, can wait at least 5 years to see whether it will be Bloo-ray or HD-DVD.

Grow up and stop with the BS comments

OutLaw6544d ago

Just because it has alot of backing doesn't mean it is going to be successful. I don't care if that sh!t had a 1000 movies right now. There is no way I'm paying $1000 to $1500. Just to watch movies.

greenlynxx6544d ago

And neither are the majority of consumers.

THELANDSOFSAND6544d ago (Edited 6544d ago )

blu ray isn't going to be a standard.

XboxKing6543d ago

$1000 is a lot of money so I don't see myself geting an Blue-ray player. (Other then my PS3)

I knew all of those things. I'll add one that many dont know (if you are a hardware person you do). you CAN actually swap bluray drives between systems. The drives themselves are interchangeable but the board that interfaces is not. So anyone who has a dead optical drive can just get a replacement and swap the interface board and be back to reading discs in no time. I've had to do this myself on both a 20gb B01 as well as a 40gb L01 unit.

you can also replace the spinning hdd with an SSD for improved (not life changing) performance as well as quieter and cooler system reliability. The physical spinning drives draw more current and generate heat as a result. Using an SSD means no moving parts and thus will have less current draw and reduced fan noise from not having to spin as much as usual to offset any heat generated by the spinning hdd.

I never even thought of that. If I can ever track down a reasonable true backward compatibility one the first thing I'll do is ssd it up.

Took my PS3 out the other week and plugged it in, it has the Red Light of Death. RIP

Still one of my favorite Playstations next to the Playstations that came before it and after it.

shinoff21831h ago(Edited 1h ago)

You missed some great games then. Especially the variety. Ps3 lacked compared to before and after.

It had great games but it lacked compared to every other ps system. The variety went out the window. Game budgets got higher that's when developers stopped taking chances. Indies weren't quite going full speed like the ps4 generation. It's my least favorite of all the Playstation. Also jrpgs disappeared like a mf, there were some but sht compared to previous gens.

Name someone that isn't trying to look us these days maybe cdpr.

Take two, ubi and yes even PlayStation are pushing us to own nothing and be happy with our live service ad injected games on a sub so they can raise prices at will and take access away when they see fit.

If it keeps up I'll be a full time retro gamer and this industry will be crashing hard

As rediculas as it sounds we need government reforms to defend consumer rights
