It seems with this series one of the main draws for the title is the hentai tradition, I guess the closest term English has is "fan service"--only mostly geared to a male audience. If it's the core draw of your title, meaning people buy the game because of the fan service, then altering the game to suit different regions won't be of any benefit. I mean current fans in different regions will be upset the game was changed, and those who were critical before will just further criticize the rather average hack n' slash underneath. If they aren't willing to take criticism or discuss their choices then they have no business making games. So honestly just keep the game the same in all regions, grow a spin, and take the criticisms. This game was never going to hit a mass market appeal and you knew that going in--I think your fans know that too.

It's like if your porn had solid sales and you tried to hit a bigger market by removing the sex. What's left isn't all that great, and you were never going to pull Transformers numbers to begin with--so why bother? You wanna make porn then make porn, but don't act surprised when it's award time and nobody calls.

Isnt it more ecchi than hentai?

Swiftfox2513d ago

By definition yes, but I've always found hentai to be the broad umbrella term which includes ecchi.

Venoxn4g2512d ago

Well..I hate hentai but I like ecchi..i am not much into animated bang bang stuff.. but ecchi (at least the one I watch) is usually tied with good story and some comedy elements or action..well to each his own I guess :)

CrimsonWing692513d ago

why?

Isn't that what your games are known for?

I don't think people who are offended by sexuality will automatically be into this game just because you are going to tone down the sexuality.

It's kind of like this, toning down porn to try to get an audience who doesn't like porn so that now it appeals to them.

A little bit. The game started out very small and that was the big selling point in order to move units. Now that the franchise has grown, and is getting more popular, it might be worth considering having features that differ depending on where it’s being sold. That way it might be able to sell better in certain regions where it would be problematic to have that kind of content.

Allow me to translate:
Me and my bros were kicking it in the basement with some brewskies thinking about making some money with a game that focused on sexy hot babes....because you know sex sells and there seemed at the time to be a market ripe for the picking in that area. Honestly we didn't think it would get as big as it has that's why we really went all out to sexualize the females as much as we could....because you know..sex sells.

But now we got the attention of certain people in certain countries who are very puritan in what they want in their games. So yeah we'd like to make more money by catering to those who shun the sexualization of the female form. But not alienate those who enjoy it. Here in Japan we all about various perversions we believe it's healthy for adult men. But in America we understand there's a limit far too many insecure females take game content far too serious. Radical feminist practically run that country and have all but decimated the once proud males of the country into spineless drones that fear ridicule from the oppressive might of americas contradictory female complaints.

But! We are in this to make money so we will consider fully clothed man like females who constantly talk about how everything they are and do is meant to empower others of their ilk to change how men view them while contradicting their cause by maintaining their own negative views on men. This way they feel they won and we still get paid.

America gets G rated senran while men of that country will have to secretly order from our country the R rated version and hope they don't get caught and judged and ridiculed all over Twitter and social media because you know....social media opinions are so very serious.

But that's one of the main selling points in the series.

Josh Sawyer Reflects on Design Evolution: From Icewind Dale to Pentiment

Josh Sawyer is a name that has been familiar to RPG fans for decades. He's worked on Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights 2, Alpha Protocol, Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity, and most recently Pentiment. How did he get into game development, how has his design philosophy changed over the years, and why did he decide to do Pentiment a little differently?

Those are some great games. Icewind Dale I & II are underrated.

If Larian made Icewind Dale III, I'd lose my mind.

What a fantastic, thorough interview.
