Disney is Blocking the X-Men Franchise from Expanding

TICGN: With Marvel vs Capcom Infinite coming soon to modern consoles, one question is baffling fans. "Where are the X-Men?" Disney is blocking the X-Men.

Nope. Clickbait article is clickbait.

Explain Spiderman on PS4.The movie franchise is owned by Sony. The argument that Disney doesn't want to promote another company's property is b***s**t.

Well, Spider-Man is involved with Disney now correct? Spider-Man is a bad example because the new movie is a joint project with Sony and Disney. The name alone "Homecoming" is a nod that Spidey is back in with Marvel/Disney.

The Fantastic 4 and X-men are definitely promoted less by Marvel. You only have to look at the evidence of this. All projects feature GotG where the X-men would have been. There are plenty of stories about this and I absolutely agree they would rather promote "their" characters over characters that have rights with other companies.

Chevalier2514d ago

That was Sony leveraging how much Disney wanted to have Spidey in the MCU and Disney stands to make over a billion dollars in merchandise sales when the Spiderman launches. Sony is playing ball with Disney and leveraging that to get the exclusive Spiderman game made. Whereas Fox isn't going to play ball at all so Disney will continue to try to kill the Xmen till they do.

Relientk772514d ago

You suck Disney

X-Men are awesome

FarEastOrient2514d ago

Disney is trying to get full rights back for X-Men and Fantastic Four. Fox isn't playing ball, so they sabotage the properties. It's the same situation in Orlando.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan2514d ago

Disney has full rights of TV, comics and video games, it's not like they had nothing to work with. Hey, both companies had the movie rights to Quicksilver and I'll take Fox's any day of the week.

LucasRuinedChildhood2514d ago

Disney should never get control of X-Men. They're not suited to the more serious themes and they'd limit the direction the franchise could take. They would have slaughtered Logan and Deadpool with awful sitcom jokes, poor action and a PG-13 rating. There'd completely butcher a character like Magneto - no way would they allow a scene of a concentration camp. Josh Whedon would probably try make a crappy joke about the conditioning if he had to include it.

KwietStorm_BLM2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

I would trade a few jokes for X-Men The Last Stand, XMen Apocalypse, X-Men Origins Wolverine, and all Fantastic Four movies to not exist. At least Marvel knows who their characters actually are. And Joss Whedon hasn't been around for some time.

DarXyde2514d ago

Oh yes, because FOX has done such an incredible job with X-Men prior to Logan and Deadpool. /s

Here's the thing: Logan was great, but it felt heavily inspired by another success called The Last of Us. You should curb any expectations you have for Deadpool 2 too . The first was an origin story told largely through flashbacks. How they intend to move the story on the sequel will be interesting to watch. I hope.

And it's funny you concern yourself with character portrayals with the MCU. FOX absolutely butchered Doom, who is easily among (if not, THE best) villain in the Marvel universe. They have NEVER portrayed the character well.

Lastly, the need for an R rating should tell you that those movies have no chance without being edgy and taking liberties. I would say the MCU does very well without it. I would say that if MCU actually needed to use an R rating to make a movie good, it'd be limited to X- force. But because FOX is being difficult, we don't have any hope of a Doom War movie series OR to even have Deadpool and Thanos fighting over Death.

FOX had 2 great movies in the last few years. I think they should just play ball.

RommyReigns2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

@KwietStorm

Joss Whedon is currently working on Justice League after Zack Snyder had to step down late in production because of a death in his family.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan2514d ago

@KwietStorm

Hhhmm, almost the only reason there's a MCU is because of Fox. Prior to the first X-Men, comic book movies were a joke. Did they have a few misses? Sure. But let's not act like all MCU movies are awesome.

thatguyhayat2514d ago

Id love to see avengers vs xmen movie. But FOX will be FOX

LucasRuinedChildhood2513d ago

@DarXyde
Dude, stop. Are you going to casually insult the The Dark Knight as well? It's not about being "edgy". It's about having to create something that isn't allowed to have themes and messages that are too hard for kids to handle and being forced to not show what is actually happening in a fight (in a way that is oftentimes laughable - Wolverine has claws I mean c'mon). PG-13 is a plague upon the movie industry and shouldn't be defended. Many comic books would rise about that ratings-wise so this should be represented in cinema as well. Spiderman doesn't need an R rating but Logan and Deadpool did.

@KwietStorm
True, some of their movies have missed the mark (under different leadership around 10 years ago) but are we just going to ignore X-Men 1, X-Men 2, The Wolverine, X-Men: First Class and X-Men Days of Future Past? Out of their last 5 or 6 X-Men movies (I'll admit, they fucked up F4 again), the only disappointment was Apocalypse and overall they've done a great job. They set the groundwork for the whole genre (in terms of cinema) along with the Raimi's Spiderman movies. Apocalypse and Last Stand are better than the Thor movies, Iron Man 2 and The Incredible Hulk. Marvel has definitely been more consistent and their movies have never been as bad as Origins or The Fantastic Four movies but in my opinion their movies never reached the same heights either.

Besides, guys - how would they even integrate X-Men and a civil rights movement of that scale into the current Marvel Universe? It's a bit too late. We'd have to wait until they reboot the MCU anyway.

This. Isn't. Disney.
Marvel Entertainment sets their own policies regarding their characters, and Marvel Games has said that anyone with the license is free to use any character they choose.

Besides which: this is citing a years-old policy. The X-Men books have since been revitalized and pushed quite a bit.

It's Capcom that opted not to use them as they want to leverage the MCU.

ShadowWolf7122514d ago

Ike Perlmutter runs Marvel Entertainment, which includes Marvel Comics and Marvel Games. He ran it before the buyout and he runs it now. Same with Lucasfilm. Kathleen Kennedy ran it before, she runs it now. They operate independently of Disney in the same way PlayStation operates independently of Sony.

That's how they operate.

admiralvic2513d ago

Honestly, you can tell this is not true by simply looking at the roster of Marvel vs Capcom games.

The first game had standard and somewhat popular characters, with the second game having tons of off the wall characters. By the time the third game came out, Disney only had some control over Marvel (hard to say because of development times, taking over the company and so forth), but there was only a slight lean towards upcoming movies. We still had weird characters like Shuma Groath, M.O.D.O.K, Dormammu, Super-Skrull and Taskmaster. Now you look at it after Disney took control and it leans, heavily, towards established characters and upcoming movies.

I don't believe for a second Capcom choose Black Panther or Captain Marvel, especially when X-Men has been a bit part of every MvC game and even the previous MvSF and X-Men vs. SF. Not to mention, so many people want to point out how cheap/lazy Capcom is, so I can't imagine they wouldn't want to include Wolverine, a character that has been in all these games, if it was up to them.

Finally, even if the same person is in charge and they have relative control/policies, the people above them are calling the shots. Take PlayStation, they likely took the bluray route with the PlayStation 3 because Sony wanted to push their bluray product. Even if PlayStation can make choices independent of Sony, like create a game, Sony itself will still say things like "make a product that helps push 4K" or other such things.

InKnight7s2514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

I think because X men is so big. Look at movies no story is done at all and there is alot left to do and explain.

Double_O_Revan2514d ago

While I fully agree X-men would be better off back in the hands of Marvel over Fox, Disney is just being bitter and fighting dirty.

Sam Fisher2514d ago

The way i see it is fox is the scumy ones, why couldnt they make deal on having these on common ground for both companies

Gamble202514d ago

I can understand both sides. Fox wants a big franchise and they paid good money (albeit a very long time ago) to license X-Men. At the same time, it’s not really fair to Disney to be tied into contracts that give film rights to opposing studios in virtual perpetuity (assuming the studio keeps making movies). Disney’s only hope is that Fox simply doesn’t make enough money on the franchise anymore to put up with it, or at the least that they find themselves in a situation where they need Marvel to help generate excitement in them again like Sony has had to do for Spidey. There’s no way Marvel will create new X-men characters and give Fox more material.

CorndogBurglar2514d ago

Why would they? Their X-Men movies make a lot of money as it is. They don't need Marvel/Disney.

Marvel are the ones that sold the movie rights to their own characters. Now to limit the use of fan favorite characters in other media, because of their own mistake, is just hurting their fans. Plain and simple.

CorndogBurglar2514d ago

@Gamble20

Fox have proven with the Fantastic 4 that they are willing to keeo trying new films even with a failing franchise. F4 has been one disappointment after another. They rebooted once. The reboot sucked even worse than the first ones. And now there is rumor that they are going to try an animated, Incredibles style F4 movie.

You can hardly blame them though. Its the golden age of comic book movies. All film trends eventually die out. It only takes one good movie to make a ton of money and launch a new series. Might as well keep trying while the time right, because eventually comic book films will start making less money. Then they will let the rights revert to Marvel.

Gamble202514d ago (Edited 2514d ago )

@Condog

You’re right - but they have allowed some licenses to lapse if they just couldn’t find a way to profit from the franchise. Daredevil is a good example. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fox gives up on F4 as the property is already on the clock in a few years and audiences have lost interest. The animated idea is probably the last shot. X-Men however will be a Fox property for a very very long time.

To be fair to Fox, while they've interfered and ruined some movies, they generally give the directors way more freedom. Logan and Deadpool are the best comic book movies of the last few years and are far better than the average MCU movie. They simply would not be possible with Disney at helm (imagine PG Deadpool - shudders). First Class and Days Of Future Past were also REALLY well done and perfectly explored the dynamic between Magneto and Professor X. This is all because they let the directors have their own shot at it. It's probably also why Apocalypse wasn't great but overall I'm far happier with them in control of the X-Men.

RommyReigns2514d ago

I find the main X Men movies enjoyable, but some aspects are annoying like the way Mystique leading the X Men into battle has been shoehorned in and makes the rest of the awesome X Men like Cyclops and the Beast become like lackeys (seriously though, it's like the only reason that has happened is because Mystique is being played by that egomaniac Jennifer Lawrence), and also where are other awesome characters like Gambit and Sabretooth? (I know Gambit has that movie coming up apparently being played by Channing Tatum (lmfao), but Gambit in the X Men cartoons was fricking awesome and should have been part of the main team from the get go)

ShadowWolf7122514d ago

This isn't a Disney policy.

Why do people seem to thing Bob Iger sits there micromanaging every subsidiary?

KwietStorm_BLM2514d ago

It's always easier for people to go with a scapegoat. Thinking is hard.

aaronaton2514d ago

You can't call them the 'X-men' anymore, its the 'X-people'.

to be fair, there were three capcom vs snk titles. 1, Pro & 2 but only one SvC Chaos. If there is a capcom/SNK crossover that needs a new entry it is that one.

Yi-Long722d ago

The article states Tekken 7 might be the best fighter currently available on Xbox, but leaves out important information that it never takes advantage of the Xbox hardware. It never got any kind of patch/boost/upgrade for the more powerful Xbox consoles, meaning it still runs at 720p I believe, resulting in a very blurry look.

Truly wish more devs would respect their products and customers enough to address issues such as these.

Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite Deserved Better

What could've been an unbeatable addition to the Versus franchise ends up being a footnote in why publishers shouldn't leave a project hanging with a meager budget.

It had two-person teams instead of the fan-favored 3, and they charged for Venom as DLC instead of including him in the base game, even though Venom was the most-missed omission from MvC3.

Marvel vs Capcom deserved better than Infinite.

MvC3’s mechanics were too shallow, but at least they tried with the roster (THE most attractive part of the franchise).

If they were smart, they’d go back and do a semi-reboot of MvC2 with a hand-drawn style, and just include Marvel characters.

Avengers vs X-men would be infinitely cooler than anything watered down with old Capcom characters. I don’t need Ryu to fight Iron Man…. We wanna have Hulk fight Iron Man more.

Shiro173859d ago

I enjoyed 2v2 way better then 3 on a team. Also, the mechanics on mvci where easy better.

MIDGETonSTILTS17858d ago

They couldn’t be easier than MVC3 and be better.

sourOG859d ago (Edited 859d ago )

I thought the series went into hibernation. The property rights debacle was an understandable reason. It is a pain in the ass. Old games getting their soundtracks removed, games getting taken off of the store, etc. When they announced infinite I went berserk because I understood the trouble they went through to make that happen. They got hype to 100 and then took a giant dump on it. We didn’t deserve that, mvc didn’t deserve that.

I want a capcom versus game. They have enough characters to do it and the budget and properties aren’t an issue

VersusDMC859d ago

I more want a Bandai Namco or Square vs Capcom. Or a Project X Zone situation where it's characters from several different publishers.

sourOG859d ago

I don’t really play snk games like that so that doesn’t hype me. I haven’t played the other vs games. I want a straight up 3v3 capcom characters fighter. No guests, no contracts for right holder liberties and chains to someone else’s characters.

That development freedom could be boring for some with just capcom characters but I don’t think it would. I think it would be capcom unleashed and I also believe they have a solid roster with their own properties. In a time when everyone is making their own “rumble verse” with their properties I think it’s time for classic capcom to show them how it’s done.

Terry_B859d ago

Yeah..both Capcom and Disney ruined the series with this one.

Gaming4Life1981859d ago

I like infinite but the roster is terrible. Capcom needs to remake mvsc2 asap
