Why Xbox One BC Is Largely Failing

The Xbox One backward compatibility program is failing based on the Ars Technica report most likely because of the abundance of remasters, newer games and the problem of replay value. All three of these reasons likely eclipse any desire for gamers to truly want to play the exact version of last generation's greatest games.

While I agree that gamers tend to play new games over old games, as the chart obviously suggests, I do not its failing because gamers truly want "new" experiences.

If that were the case then it would seem every new COD is a completely awesome new kind of experience. Same with any other big title like the farcrys and gta's. Which therefore doesnt make sense when bringing up halo or gears which also tend to have new iterations every 3 or so years.

This also debunks the idea that xbox gamers love to spend time with old games because they have no new games to play.

As far as failing and investors. This is a feature. A feature that has absolutely no problem with regards to investors because it most certainly doesnt cost them much money whereas if anything it could gain them a lot of money through purchases and dlc etc.

Also, it wasnt meant to close any distance with the competitor but instead meant to give gamers what they ALL wanted from the start. Their last gen games to work on the new gen. Many gamers sell their old console to get the new one. PC has been doing this for a long time. Its time consoles caught up with that.

Kratos0Ace2531d ago

Well Microsoft advertised it as a game changer against the competition. Remember the video that they released on how to play games you already owned on Xbox One? The E3 that announced BC was commented afterwards mostly regarding the BC. In fact, so many news media sites and Xbox fans were calling that announcement a "bombshell." Clearly, quite a few people believed that with BC, The Xbox One was going to deal a pretty significant blow to PlayStation.

EatCrow2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

Um. Well its a new feature..Maybe I guess its best not to advertise new features. The media turned it into something big. MS just made the small 30 sec announcement. MS isnt responsible for what the media does with its announcements or even tweets.

It really wasnt a bombshell for sales but a bombshell feature. And if MS does it right and moves it along to future gens then theyve officially added to console gaming what steam added to PC which is pretty big.

Christopher2531d ago

Don't recall Microsoft claiming it was a game changer, but media outlets did.

https://youtu.be/kWtRdeGOmO...

Remember, people also called Shenmue and FF7 Remake bombshells.

Are we really discussing business or media driven hype?

4Sh0w2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

Lol, playing a BC title once a month or sparingly while MOSTLY playing current gen games is WINNING, not failing because the whole idea of BC on a next gen console is to be used as a side option. I hardly think Microsoft wants Xbox fans to play FREE or cheap old games more than current games and of course gamers themselves are NOT buying an X1 for BC as a main attraction=

This news is a failure....if not then how many ps fans right now could care less if ps5 has no BC? [answer as if Sony is listening] ...'crickets, 'crickets.

Bigpappy2531d ago

All they said is that it is a FREE service and they wouldn't make you buy game you already own. It is only a swipe at Sony because those are things they did to you guys and it hurts to have it said. But they never mentioned Sony or PSnow.

Mike
I care about the games I own, which in turn would mean I must care about b/c to keep all my games on the current platform. Unfortunately for me I happen to support the platform that doesn't support b/c.
I do have confidence the ps5 will have b/c

Kratos0Ace2530d ago

@ArmrdChaos:

But he makes fine points. Remakes/remasters are very attractive to those that like specific last gen games. Replay value is also a big issue, lots of games these days are not worth replaying. The author seems to be making the case that BC may be in trouble in the future if it doesn't increase in usage.

gangsta_red2530d ago (Edited 2530d ago )

@Kratos

MS never advertised it as a game changer.

"so many news media sites and Xbox fans were calling that announcement a "bombshell." "

Hmmmm...was it the same media who said Shareplay is the greatest feature of any console?

http://n4g.com/news/1654488...

How about their fans that said the same, clearly quite a few people believed this also. So why the negativity for Xbox fans who love the use of BC for MS?

rainslacker2530d ago

MS promotes it, which is understandable. I don't really remember them promoting it as a game changer like they did with cloud, or DX(which they actually backpeddled on in this regard afterwards).

They did their little jab as a promotion, but the only people saying it was a game changer were some Xbox fan boys and idiotic opinion articles.

I just think most xbox players are in for live and multiplayer experiences. BC has its place and i wish all newer generation consoles had it to help clear out my backlog of games i didnt get to finish from the previous generation and clear up space for new consoles.

Kratos0Ace2530d ago

I agree. Most Xbox gamers mostly play online. They tend to want to play the next big online experience. No wonder why Mike Nichols says a little less than half use BC. Of that half is hard to get an average as giving total hours spent by a group says very little.

Bigpappy2531d ago

Refreshing to see someone spell this out as clear as day. This has nothing to do with making people want an Xbox, it is a service to those who purchased Xbox games previously and would like to have access to those games. But it also allows for picking up some games you wanted to play but missed. Fanboy are always making it about sales though.

Kratos0Ace2530d ago

@Bigpappy:

The point is that Xbox fans and media were touting the BC as the second coming and turning point of this gen. Therefore, suggesting a sales impact. Thanks to them, many were under the impression that BC was actually going to be a big deal when it actually turned out to not be at all.

FGHFGHFGH2530d ago

Steam is DRM that is accepted by the majority of pc gamers. MS have added emulation of 360 games to xbox one. Not really the same thing.

EatCrow2530d ago

Steam is not DRM. Ignorant. You can play offline.

Failing? It's not meant to be super successful. It's just a convenience.

One of the points of the article is how the BC was advertised. Then because of Microsoft refusing to give any sales data for games or a follow-up to the BC "bombshell" impact, a report like this one resulted. Microsoft's silence kind of encourages these things and by the looks of it many people out there are curious about BC's real impact.

EatCrow2531d ago (Edited 2531d ago )

I don't think MS has been silent about BC feature. Theyve been commenting and adding new games constantly.
http://n4g.com/news/1907152...

And this article shows its impact.
"The jump puts the Xbox 360 version of Black Ops at No.2 on Amazon's hourly PC & Video Games sales chart, sitting behind Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and ahead of DOOM. It had previously ranked at No.270 in the sales chart."

Pretty interesting impact. It died down for obvious reasons. But the spike and the impact is there.

And the real goals as stated in this old article http://www.gameinformer.com...

"I think it’s as much forward compatibility on what’s to come as it is backward compatibility on what’s been built," he says. "When I’m building something today, I know that it will be playable 10 years from now because I’m building on a platform that a company like Microsoft is out there supporting. The other thing I’ll say is that many of our partners build their games across multiple platforms, so if we give them an app framework that can span all the way from potentially a phone all the way up through a PC, that can be good. I think there are multiple things to look at as the advantages. So when we talk about multiple compatibility, forward and backward compatibility is the way to think about it."

EatCrow2531d ago

And based on this article
http://www.gamesindustry.bi...

And MS executive responses it seems theyre not gonna end support any time soon.

FallenAngel19842531d ago

This will always be an appreciated feature

Two more Xbox 360 titles spotted on Microsoft Store with backwards compatibility IDs

We recently came across some strange store activity that could suggest Microsoft is making more games backwards compatible. Now, we've spotted another two Xbox 360 titles on the Microsoft Store with the backwards compatible ID.

I hope to see the Timesplitters series get added to the current backwards compatibility catalogue. Goldeneye -Esque shooters aren’t made anymore.

Sheppard7t3930d ago

I loved those games so much back in the day.

Knightofelemia930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

Silent Hill 2 and 4 would be better titles to add to the BC list the a then Are You Smarter then a 5th Grader First Templar I have never heard of. I am not going out of my way to buy these two titles kind of lazy to add these two titles when all Microsoft has to do is bang on Konami's door to add SH2 and 4. Downpour and Homecoming work so why not add 2 and 4 to the list.

BehindTheRows930d ago

Because 2 & 4 were only available in the HD Collection for the 360.

MissAubrey930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

You mean 2&3 are in the HD collection.. Silent Hill 4 the Room was only on the OG Xbox, pc and ps2. But is currently playable thru BC on the xbox 360, not xbox one

BehindTheRows930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

@MissAubrey

Yes, I’m aware (I own every Silent Hill game released - yes, all, the PS1 original all the way down to the PC, Xbox, and Wii releases, and am emulating the first on PC). I know what’s what. I simply couldn’t change the typo nor finish the edit since N4G’s option expires.

Regardless, 4 was never an Xbox 360 game, and therefore, BC can’t exist in the way he’s requesting for it.

Knightofelemia930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

@BehindTheRows

SH2 and SH3 are on the HD Collection and yes BC can work with the OG Xbox on Xbox 1, Series X/S Microsoft has all ready added some OG Xbox games to the list of BC games. Microsoft even announced that some OG Xbox games will work on newer Xbox systems at E3.

Knightofelemia930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

@BehindtheRows

SH2 on the HD Collection is a poor mans copy it's way different from the PS2 and OG Xbox port so is SH3 in the HD Collection is way different then its PS2 cousin.

BehindTheRows929d ago (Edited 929d ago )

@MissAubrey

I never said you DID say that. I was talking about him.

BehindTheRows930d ago (Edited 930d ago )

Uh, yes I know (like I already said, it was a typo). You asked about 2 (already BC in the HD Collection) and 4, which ISN’T on the 360, unlike 3, Downpour, and Homecoming.

If you’re speaking about Xbox BC, in general, then that’s different and 4 (from the original Xbox) will most likely be added one day. Your other option is to maybe grab a PC and a copy or emulate the PS2 version with said PC.

MissAubrey929d ago (Edited 929d ago )

I said SH4 was playable on the 360 thru OG xbox backwards compatibility. "playable on 360" not playable on Xbone/Series.

BehindTheRows930d ago

Yeah, the HD Collection wasn’t very good, but that’s besides the point. :P

dreamed929d ago

I remember first Templar...I didn't play it....it was garbage..😂

It's too bad we have OG titles like Deathrow and others that haven't been made compatible yet. MS has made a great effort bringing over the majority of their library but 1st gen XBOX titles have fallen through the cracks.

XBManiac930d ago

The First Templar and Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

MissAubrey930d ago

the moral of the story here folks is they brought bc back! yes these titles suck but atleast we know now they are back at it again after alittle hiatus!

Backward Compatibility Reaches the Clouds for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Members

There’s a magical moment when you open up Kameo, an original launch title for Xbox 360, and it shows you last played in 2008, and you’re able to jump right back into the game like you never left.

I think if Microsoft really wanted to leverage their 360 library they would work to bring 360 emulation to PC and offer games like Fable 2 on Game Pass for PC.

Wikkid6661139d ago

Their goal would be to keep moving forward will the streaming service. Get the latency down on that so there wouldn't be a need for an emulator.

Tacoboto1139d ago

His point is... they could bring *that* emulator from the cloud hardware and let us be able to run 360-exclusive games on our own PCs.

I'd understand third party games being excluded by licensing deals, but it would be awesome if MS could have 360 emulation as a download into the Windows App for at least their own titles.

Orchard1139d ago

My guess is they haven't done this just because getting reliable/predictable performance with emulation on PC where there's a billion hardware configurations is complicated. Easier to have it running on fixed hardware and streamed to the PC.

1139d ago
1139d ago
Eidolon1139d ago

It's never going to look or be as latency free as even emulation.

DJStotty1138d ago (Edited 1138d ago )

@saishi

I can not comment on other cloud streaming platforms, but the only issue i have had with xcloud, is the odd bit of freezing, but other than that the games seem to play ok, at least on my galaxy S9.

It's not perfect, but it is good enough for dropping into a game on a work break or lunch.

PS - when i am at home, i do not use xcloud, i use the console. And xcloud performs quite well for something still in beta.

@RazzerRedux

Those that want 360 emulation on PC, have been able to do that for years.

I have a PS2 emulator on my mobile.

RazzerRedux1138d ago

Obviously I'm talking about the official Xbox 360 emulation that Microsoft created and not third party emulators.

CaptainHenry9161138d ago

That would be cool. Not going to lie but Microsoft has been saving me lot's of money with GamePass for PC

Can we please get Ninja Gaiden 2 for X-Cloud please. Since Tecmo will not put original Gaiden 2 on switch. I want to play a portable Ninja Gaiden 2 at work on my lunch hours

Tacoboto1139d ago

It was on Game Pass until a month or two before they announced the Master Collection - very likely not a coincidence.

autobotdan1139d ago

I just would love the option to play Ninia Gaiden 2 anywhere. That would be a dream game to take around. I am not asking for Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 portable. I want Ninja Gaiden 2 portable

Father__Merrin1138d ago

What you would whip out a phone and then whip out a controller on your break to play games?

autobotdan1138d ago (Edited 1138d ago )

Merrin I always keep a extra Xbox One controller in my walmart work locker 365 days a year. Literally. I've been playing Xbox One games on my lunch hour on my phone for over 1 year. I was a x-cloud beta tester since the beginning

I got this backbone one and have been using it non stop during down time at work. I’ve been remote playing Octopath Traveler getting my grind in. I really love this thing. Highly recommended. Cmon XCloud iOS. This news is good because I want to eventually play Lost Odyssey the same way.

crazyh0rse1139d ago

BackBone is a great ios controller addon been at work for 14 hours now and the controller works perfectly. i think it's better than razer kishi

15 Xbox Games We Wish Went Backwards Compatible

Not only would it have been great if Max Payne, Freedom Fighters, Nier, Blur and Lollipop Chainsaw got to become backwards compatible, it also would be great if those games got to have more games come out in their franchises.

I want Toby Gard’s Galleon. I have the game but no way to play it and I’m not going to buy an original Xbox again.

Blur. Was gutted it never came over, but I guess the licences expired

Its not as backwards compatibity is dead its just been put on hold so all backwards compatibity game work on next xbox then when its released they will start up again, P.S I did finish Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Burning Earth

Idk I'm pretty sure they are done with backsward compatible program even when next gen xbox comes out i don't see them announcing new backsward compatible games
