How did Sonic the Hedgehog become America’s longest running videogame based comic?

The longest-running monthly American comic to never be relaunched is Sonic the Hedgehog.

How did a licensed comic about a video game hedgehog from the people that brought you Archie wind up outlasting every other series in comics?

By having very little to do with the games. It's too bad a court case forced a reboot in 2012 though as that's when I stopped reading them. Based on what I've heard about the rebooted series there is some stuff I'd really like but at least a couple huge deal breakers that make me glad I made tracks, I mean besides the loss of so many characters and story elements from my childhood that caused me to leave the series behind in the first place.
