Nintendo Cannot Delay The Release Of Its Virtual Console Service On The Switch Any Longer

One of the biggest omissions on the Nintendo Switch is still that of the Virtual Console service and it is now starting to hurt the burgeoning console.

rjason122534d ago

I doubt it's really doing anything to the system. It will come eventually, hopefully sooner than later.

Eonjay2533d ago

Furthermore, it is futile to insist that Nintendo 'can't delay' something. They can and they are good at doing it.

blawren42532d ago

We already know that this is coming in a couple of months. Isn't the paid online supposed to have a feature where classic games have online play and the ability to purchase after a month? That would imply the virtual console is coming very soon.

Kingthrash3602534d ago

So it's ok for ms to wait 2 years for bc but the switch only gets 2 months? ....and are outselling the competition without it?
Lord, what's up with that journalist?

_-EDMIX-_2533d ago

?

Is this VC giving users all their older games for free like free download or cross buy?

If so, sure...that would be like BC, but from what I'm reading, they are talking about VC like PSN or XBL in terms of ability to purchase older games.

I don't really see a reason why that is delayed other then them likely rushing Switch to come out in spring as suppose to fall.

If its to add BC as in VC games from Wii, Wii U etc, then sure, take their time, its a worthy feature, but I didn't hear anything about that being the case.

Could be wrong, but I don't know regarding that with VC.

Sirk7x2533d ago

They have to develop new emulation software to use for the Switch. It's a different architecture from their prior consoles with VC, which also both didn't have that feature until about six months in. On a PC, you download an emulator, any particular rom, whatever, and there's a good chance that you'll run into some kind of audio or visual glitch/discrepancy somewhere in the game, as it's never perfect. Nintendo, I believe, has to tweak all of it for every single game released, so as to keep it as perfect of an emulation as possible. Takes time. There's also the matter of licensing, advertisement, hosting, etc.

_-EDMIX-_2533d ago

@sir-makes sense.

One of my good friends hacked my Wii so we could have a crap load of Super Nintendo ,Sega Genesis and a whole series of games.

I wonder if there's a way they could make some sort of default emulator so that way they're able to always have Virtual Console when they first release a new system.

I mean I've been playing Super Nintendo games on stuff like the Wii and the PSP for a pretty long time but I think most people also underestimate all the time it probably took to get those emulators to work correctly.

Lol

I think a lot of people who disagree don't even fully understand that the question that's being asked is not simply a troll question, it's legitimately trying to ask whether or not Nintendo has confirmed that they're going to somehow link the virtual consoles of the previous platforms which is very much a valid question.

But because of how long they're saying it's going to take to get this emulator up and running it's a valid that it's not out right now.

I'd rather have it come out months later and actually work perfectly as opposed to release with a bunch of issues.

I'm hoping that the account system that they have set up will allow some of those Nintendo games to be transferred over the other Nintendo systems in the future.

yomfweeee2533d ago

Oh wow a brand new system is outselling 3.5 year old systems for a couple months. Whooptideedoo.

Kingthrash3602533d ago

That's not my point.
The journalist is saying nintendo can't delay...I fail to see why.
They are selling g well without it.
Not to mention it took years for it competition to launch BC and psnow. So why is the swith being rushed.

ninsigma2533d ago

I think it needs to come out sooner rather than later due to the bug 3rd party games not coming. At least when PlayStation and Xbox don't have any big exclusives the third parties take over but the content on the Switch store is fairly poor right now without that support. Imo VC could alleviate some of that.

godashram2533d ago

My guess is that Nintendo will probably mention something at E3, but even then, a steady influx of quality games is more important than a virtual console.

Auron2533d ago (Edited 2533d ago )

I agree they are holding off til e3 to show the virtual console.

RosweeSon2533d ago

They did the same with 3DS Wasn't ready for launch yet in June around E3 here you go have a free copy of Excitebike 3d classics and download Zelda GBC.

jamstorr862533d ago

I think they will announce it at E3, and it will be available straight after the announcement with a gamecube title available straight away too. its the only way they could announce VC and make a big impact with it, as normally with game announcements there are things like previews and opinion pieces to garner interest prior to launch. be difficult to do this with VC as all the games made available will already be a known quantity.

meganick2533d ago

Oh yes they can. They're Nintendo, remember?

nevin12533d ago

Can I buy a 3DS and play NES/SNES games?

Auron2533d ago

It has to be the new nintendo 3ds.
Snes games aren't on the regular 3ds.

_-EDMIX-_2533d ago

From what I read only the new 3DS.

https://www.slashgear.com/y...

This is news to me lol

" The games wouldn’t play on just any 3DS out there. Only the New 3DS would be granted access to the classic titles.

Today, Nintendo clarified the reason why your trusty launch 3DS won’t work. The New 3DS has a newer, faster CPU that its older brother, which is necessary in order to play the games properly. Older systems wouldn’t play the games “with quality results,” which is why they opted to not make the feature available on them.

It’s kind of fascinating to see a console from 2011 unable to play games from all the way back in 1990/1."

LOL!

The comments are just destroying them!

Farewell to the Virtual Console, the boldest part of Nintendo's mid-00s revolution

Nintendo's mid-noughties revolution feels so distant now, even if its impact hasn't really dimmed. The touch sensation of the DS led in its own way to the iOS revolution, the motion controls of the Wii helped reestablish video games in the living room and push them towards the mainstream, and the reverberations of both are felt to this day. There's another facet of its revolution that sadly never had the same impact, and now is set to finally fizzle away.

The Virtual Console vs. Nintendo Switch Online

Streaming services have become really popular in the last decade. Are subscription and streaming services right for Videogames?

Nintendo Switch Online has replaced the Virtual Console but is the service up to the standard of previous Nintendo offerings? Furthermore, do subscription services like Xbox’s Game Pass and NSO really suit video games? This article explores these issues and looks back at the Virtual Console.

I see no reason Nintendo can’t just offer both

FinalFantasyFanatic443d ago

I really miss the VC, I don't want more subscriptions that I have to, I try to keep as few as possible.

silkylove443d ago

VC is better imo. I got games like Super Metroid for like 30 cents. If NSO allowed you to play online with anybody then I would give it the edge.

Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?

While that's valid, though, that old social media meme 'why not both?' springs to mind. Why not have subscription options and a Virtual Console eShop? With NSO being multi-faceted in its offering, it seems unlikely that everyone would drop that subscription in a heartbeat in order to buy Super Mario Bros. for $5.

Because a yearly flow of money is better than people buying specifically what they want. If online was also not behind a paywall you'd be surprised just how many people would drop the sub. When you're only given one option there's not much of a choice.

FallenAngel1984481d ago

No reason not to have both. Consumers would have the option of buying separately like PS+ and Game Pass owners can or have access to it all with a sub

Inverno481d ago

Of course there's no reason, and Nintendo fans have been very vocal about virtual console being brought back. I think however that those who really have an issue with how Nintendo has handled classic games have stayed with emulation. I know the appeal of being able to buy instead of the free alternative. As I see it, it sends a message that there's still an audience for these games, but for whatever reason it may be it's not been made easy to the consumer.

CrimsonWing69481d ago

I miss the Virtual Console. I really want HAM with it on the Wii.

Chocoburger481d ago

Just another reason why modding your Switch can fix almost all of the flaws Nintendo purposefully created on their platform. Save file back ups being another reason. Nintendo is the only company that forces you to pay money in order to back up your save files, and it doesn't even work for all games. Talk about anti-consumer B.S.!

ZeekQuattro481d ago

Because it was only successful on the Wii. Both the Wii U and 3DS VC offerings were no where as successful. It was time to move on from that service. More and more 3rd parties devs started supplying older games in other ways on the Switch so there's no need. Look at all the Capcom collections for instance. Even Konami got in on it. Same with Neo Geo or Atari collections. I could go on and on.
