Prey - Review (Portugal Gamers)

"Being a game that will have ended, even in its last moments, with a clairvoyant clue to a sequel, the original Prey , released in 2006 for PC and Xbox 360 (by the hands of 2K Games), had very positive reviews in general, both The media as well as the players. The game achieved considerable commercial success and a sequel was more than expected. Meanwhile, Bethesda acquired the rights to Prey and finally released a reboot, not the sequel, by the hands of Arkane Studios , better known by the Dishonored series. This is not a direct reboot , however, as it was very obvious from the first presentation at E3 in 2016. Let's see if this new Prey does justice to the original, much cherished by the fans."

Redfall's ugly open world will only look worse once you see how great Prey 2017 still looks

Arkane's six-year-old immersive sim has never looked better.

SullysCigar380d ago

What's with the lazy eye in that thumbnail? Is that a bug?

masterfox380d ago

that's what happens when developing for two xbox consoles, one doesn't align with the other. :D

shinoff2183380d ago

Masterfox

I don't care what side you prefer that was funny.

Deathdeliverer380d ago

If she’s the sniper class a lot of innocent people are going to get hurt.

CrimsonWing69380d ago

It's indicative of the design.

SullysCigar380d ago

She's got one eye on the fire place, the other on the chimney pot. Maybe it's her unlockable 'special skill'.

badz149379d ago

that's Ariel from the new Little Mermaid, no?

IamTylerDurden1379d ago

Idk but Prey isn't good looking. Deathloop would be the superior example.

Prey was a decent game. Not as good as Dishonored imo. They usually make 7-8 type of games depending on your taste so Redfall is a huge disappointment.

Crows90380d ago

Dishonored was incredible. World, action, puzzle and approach based gameplay. Prey was pretty good but started lacking in enemy variety. Those mimics are by far my favourite enemy type of any game.

Death loop was a massive let down for me.

IamTylerDurden1379d ago

Deathloop was good but got old.

ED-E380d ago

Agree, I liked the mimics and some parts of the story/characters in Prey (was unfortunately spoiled of the early twist and the ending, so that was a let-down to begin with) but didn't captured me like Dishonoured did. Thus I'm surprised they mentioned how good Prey looked. To me it was easily the worst part of the game, extremely sterile, bland looking objects, areas and enemies. The art design, especially of the vampires, were one of the things which turned me off instantly when I saw the preview trailers of Redfall.

Traecy380d ago (Edited 380d ago )

I enjoyed all the Dishonored games as well. I tried Prey & I just couldn't get into it.

Hofstaderman380d ago

Me too, I thought I was the only one.

shinoff2183380d ago

I really enjoyed prey over dishonered. Probably cause I love scinfi. To be honest though I've never giving dishonored it's fair shot. I dabbled in it a little. I'd like to. Think they had some sort of remaster on ps4 I'll have to check amazon

Sonic1881380d ago

Arkane lost a few key people over the years. I don't know if that has anything to do with Redfall

-Foxtrot380d ago

I didn’t mind it but I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn’t called Prey

Seeing a game you loved get rebooted into something that isn’t anything like what it actually is was super sad. I liked Tommy, I wanted to see his story continue and we got a complete reset.

If they changed the name it probably would have helped them.

IamTylerDurden1379d ago

Prey is a better game but it's not good looking.

Anyone remember that incredibly amazing Prey 2 cinematic trailer? Why they would ever cancel that game is still dumbfounding.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...

porkChop380d ago

I am still pissed that I never got to play that game. The cinematic trailer is cool but there's tons of actual gameplay out as well.

Anyway, Bethesda tried to force the devs to let Bethesda buy them and the devs said no. So Bethesda cancelled the game and made up a story about poor quality and the game just being nothing more than a tech demo. The director said the game was actually almost done by the time it was cancelled, and that it certainly didn't lack in quality.

Then Bethesda forced Arkane to call their game Prey, pissing off prey fans and associating the game with a series it had nothing in common with. Then one of the main devs from Arkane left because of it.

The worst part of this is that Prey 1 and 2's dev Human Head Studios then went on to revive their old Rune series. Immediately after Rune II released the studio went bankrupt and Bethesda swooped in the pick up all the devs and open a new studio, Roundhouse. So they still got what they wanted. It's unlikely they'll ever let Roundhouse revive Prey 2 but I really hope they do.

Vengeance1138380d ago (Edited 380d ago )

See this seems like a situation where important lines in the legally binding contract between the Publisher and Dev should have been written in. Clauses like the publisher cannot back out after a certain point. Else who's to stop any Publisher really from just tricking a dev into making a game and then on purpose canceling it at the end and go nawwww sorry bruh we changed our minds, sucks to be you! byeeeee

porkChop380d ago

Agreed. Human Head got royally screwed. I hope most devs are smarter with any contracts they sign.

CBaoth380d ago (Edited 380d ago )

Bethesda tried to buy the studio. When Human Head said they wanted to remain independent Bethesda canceled the game, bankrupting them. Very scummy move. Didn't surprise me though - this is the same Todd Howard who essentially took Ken Rolston's credit for making Elder Scrolls open world. Ever wonder why there is very little innovation to ES since Morrowind? Ken left early in Oblivion's development and Todd is a hack

EDIT: worst part is via developer diary thing, Human devs said the said the game was almost complete

IamTylerDurden1379d ago

That's why Oblivion was the best TES, it had some Ken influence.

shinoff2183380d ago

Prey 2 would've been fucking awesome if it had come to fruition. I was pretty damn hyped for that game.

-Foxtrot380d ago

Yeah it looked great

Only issue was the main character who was a generic looking space marine / bounty Hunter

They had Tommy in the game as an NPC rather than the main character, made no sense to me.

IamTylerDurden1379d ago

Yes, it had minor Mass Effect vibes.

Arkane really didn't want to call Prey (2017) 'Prey'

From Eurogamer: "Raphaël Colantonio has revealed that nobody at Arkane Austin wanted Prey (2017) to be titled Prey, and how it felt "gross" to have released something under someone else's IP.

Colantonio, known as the founder of Arkane Studios, served as the game's director and writer. He announced his departure from the studio shortly after the game's release, citing burnout and a desire to spend time with his son.

The fact that the game was never envisioned to be a part of the Prey IP isn't new for fans of the game or Arkane. It was documented by NoClip last year, in which Colantonio and other leads on the game explained that Bethesda was insistent that Arkane's next project had to be called Prey. Colantonio described the decision as a "non-negotiable compromise"."

Prey (2017) was only called Prey because Bethesda didn’t want to trademark a new title. The title of Prey made sense for the 2007 game due to the aliens harvesting humans for food. Prey (2017) could have been called “Typhon” or “Talos”. A somewhat corny alternate title could have been “Cybershock”, as Prey (2017) is a spiritual-successor to System Shock.

Profchaos624d ago

There was also a large amount of bad blood and ill will towards the original prey development team.
This seemed like a effort to stamp out the original prey franchise which is a shame as the planned prey 2 looked amazing

darthv72624d ago

the 360 Prey was a really cool game. i never played this one though as I thought it seemed like a weird reboot (turns out it wasnt). So I get what he says about using an already established name for something unrelated.

deleted624d ago

I actually skipped this game at launch because I rather enjoyed the 2007 360 game and was turned off when I saw no connection to the original in the previews.

I do regret not supporting it at launch, as this is a great game in its own right. He is 100% correct though, reusing the trademark hurt it. People were left confused, and it deserved better treatment.

glennhkboy625d ago

I feel that the latest Prey movie may also be "inspired" by the original Prey game.

ZwVw625d ago (Edited 625d ago )

Still holding out hope that Prey 2 (to Prey 2006) one day gets released. The game was literally complete and is just collecting dust in one of Bethesda's vaults.

Fluke_Skywalker625d ago

Yeah and all the footage that got released looked amazing. I really wanted that game!

Sidewinder-625d ago

One might say you're "Praying" for it....

Sgt_Slaughter624d ago

Wonder what they would even call that, Prey 2 would both be accurate and misleading at the same time

Profchaos624d ago

Same just stupid corporate politics and egos at play

Giblet_Head624d ago

It'll eventually get leaked by someone working/worked there.

MadLad625d ago (Edited 625d ago )

I thought it was common knowledge that the only reason Arkane's Prey was called "Prey" was because of the cancellation of Prey 2, and Bethesda wanted to try to capitalize on the name, being it was still a known title.

We didn't get the official Prey 2 because the studio refused to be purchased by Bethesda after it was basically finished, which is really petty.

Of all time?? ..and you mention ambiguous games like RE 7 or Fallout ...It is hyperbole at least.....i will say MGS 1 and 3 , Abe s oddysee (on ps1) , FF 7 ,Monster hunter 3 on wii , Crash Bandicoot 1 (+first level)....and so many more better games than the article s list

LordoftheCritics1411d ago

Yea this list is below average.

Army_of_Darkness1410d ago

I'd have to say God of war 3. Fighting parts of Poseidon before actually battling him was Epic!

fonger081411d ago

Oh man just off the top of my head; FFVII, LoZ:OoT, Uncharted 2, BioShock, Fallout 3, GoW3, Metroid Prime, Mass Effect 2, Super Metroid, Castlevania SoT, New GoW, Batman Arkham Asylum, Halo 3. The opening scenes/levels to these games did such a great job of setting the tone for much of the rest of the game.

Yui_Suzumiya1411d ago

Especially Mass Effect 2 when Shepherd gets spaced. That was friggin epic.

LordoftheCritics1411d ago (Edited 1411d ago )

Much better than the list on the site.

Every time I see a ''best of all time'' list, I actually expect them to have played more games.

Thomaticus1411d ago

GOD OF WAR 3.... The intro recap of the entire story to that point and the first level was amazing!

KyRo1410d ago

No Uncharted 2 train?
No MGS2 tanker?
No COD4 ship escape?

jsawmma811410d ago

How is the first infamous not here? I remember talking to a friend when the whole screen went white and chaos ensued. Got my attention real quick.
